It's explained in the last 2 comments.
How is it dangerous? You need root privileges to start system services. If someone is in a position to start or edit those files for you, there is no need to "exploit" this.
It's also explained what happens when the username is non existent and when it's "invalid".
>>
I downloaded a Windows iso, used dd to burn it to a usb drive, but it won't launch, even when the bios recognises there's a usb drive in.

I have Linux installed, could it be because of that? Should I format the drive first?

I wanted to have Windows and Linux but installed Linux first.

You have no idea of the variety of jobs that init is tasked to handle. If you honestly can't imagine that being exploited you need to learn more security. You need to be defensive, always.

So I rebooted a while ago and noticed my sound stopped working in firefox, still works everywhere else on my system just not firefox. I'm on firefox 54.

I did some googling and apparently Mozilla dropped support for Alsa in 52 which is what I use, not pulse.

Is this really what's causing my sound to drop, I just find it unlikely that I would not have noticed until now on version 54?

>>61186530
I'm just a user without any detailed technical insights about any "botnets", security problems, or whatever, but here my 2cents why I dislike systemd:

- it makes redhat too powerful
- its acceptance as de-facto standard and developers acting like it already is, makes programs start depending on it, which will ultimativly result in systemd being the actual standard, but imho programs should just run, whatever init you're using

why systemd is a meme
- poettering is funny
- she wants the system's D.
- talking about technical things you barely understand is cool

Once there's a "need" for an alternative, one will show up.
It's free software. If you don't find a free alternative, write one yourself. But you can't, because you have no skills and you are entitled and demanding other people use things you like. That's a symptom of autism.

How so? Just use your brain. You don' bite the hand feeding you (which is RedHat), so you adpot everything its presenting you. If the community likes or dislikes it, is not important. Look at the Debian voting. The majority of the community didn't want it, some didn't know what systemd is and what it does, some others approved it. Yet systemd came to Debian. Same with other distros. This just shows how much of too powerful RedHat already is.

Why do you need to have an opinion on things you don't understand? If you truly "needed" to have an opinion, you'd be smart enough to research it on your own.
But no, you want to be spoonfed information which you then blindly adapt just to have an opinion on something technical that you can parrot to feel smart in online technology discussions.

Hi /fglt/

I'm trying to make a python script run from anywhere on my system, I'm assuming I would use bashrc but I'm not sure exactly what I need to do

>>
>>61187594
That works perfectly, thankyou
>>
>>61187540
There are 2 things:

- Is the file executable?
If not, chmod +x file

- Is ~/bin in your PATH?
You PATH is a variable which holds all directries which can contain executables you can run from the cli. If ~/bin is not part (you can verify with running: echo $PATH) put a line into your bashrc:
export PATH="$PATH:~/bin"
>>
>>61187594
Is there any advantage to using the full path to your home directory instead of a tilde? I've always thought that a tilde was better, since it allows scripts/configurations to be compatible across systems
>>
>>61187651
$HOME > ~ > full path
>>
>>61187641
It's better to use ~/.profile instead of ~/.bashrc, since then your PATH variable isn't tied to a particular instance of a shell.

Wondering if I could get a second opinion on this. I've used Arch, Debian, and will be trying out Fedora at some point. I'll be using one of these on my school laptop since windows 7 sucks but I'm undecided as to which I'd rather use. I like Arch's bleeding edge software and the AUR but people here say it's unstable and it'll break on me at some point when running an update (hasn't happened to me yet on my other machine, but I like to be careful). Debian is stable and easy to install but it seems like a lot of it's packages aren't kept up at all.
Fedora seems like a balance of bleeding edge software while still being a stable system but I don't know how small it is in comparison to the above two.

Covering your webcam is probably the most normie thing to do out of the whole range of opsec things you can do.
I'm a med student and literally never seen a laptop without it covered (I actually pay attention to this cause I find it funny).
All my colleagues, the lecturers' private laptops, the laptops at the hospitals, even the one we have in our ambulances.
And all that despite being used or owned by one of the most technically clueless people I've met in my life.

If anyone is coming from Windows 10 and wondering "how do I get something just as GPU-accelerated on Linux?", try GNOME on Wayland. It's snappier AND lighter weight than Windows on the same hardware, even with LUKS encryption, just like how GNOME 2.x ran rings around Vista. GNOME uses Wayland by default on Fedora and Arch Linux, and that change will eventually make its way down to the slower-moving distros.

>I downloaded a Windows iso, used dd to burn it to a usb drive, but it won't launch, even when the bios recognises there's a usb drive in.
How this works is different between BIOS booting and EFI booting. Under BIOS, the USB drive needs to have a proper bootloader in sector 0, which ISOs won't have (they traditionally boot in a different fashion). You *can* install a custom Grub image onto such a USB drive to make it boot Windows, but making that kind of image is not exactly an entry-level topic.
Under EFI, I'm not entirely sure, but I think the EFI firmware only looks for FAT filesystems, not ISO9660. If that is the problem, you'll need to reformat the USB drive with FAT and copy the files from the ISO image, not dd it over.

>I have Linux installed, could it be because of that? Should I format the drive first?
No, the BIOS won't care what's on your hard drive when it tries to boot from a USB drive.

>I wanted to have Windows and Linux but installed Linux first.
It's definitely easier to install Windows first, since if you have Linux on there first, Windows will override the bootloader when you install it afterwards, and you'll need to use a live system to restore Grub. If you haven't done anything with your Linux system yet, it might be easier to just install Windows over it, and then reinstalled Linux.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Random means not generated by a deterministic algorithm.

Radio noise is not generated by an algorithm.

Noise in electrical components is not generated by an algorithm.

It's almost 6am, I'm after an all nighter and just finished my quadruple espresso and boy it sure did hit the sweet spot, got me dizzy for a few minutes.

I'm ready for another day of free tech support for fellow neckbeards.

I got 10 cigarettes left and a fully functioning espresso maker with around 1kg of beans. Feeling just fine brah, thinking about trying out dwm. Ideally would like to live a mouse-free life.

dwm is pretty cool I'll admit

Its easy to setup with Unbound.
Check the archwiki

does any ubuntu veteran know how to find packages which were originally installed from an ppa instead of official repos?

i want to either replace them either with the originals or remove if no official package
>>
>>61196704
have a look into ppa-purge (not sure it it actually does what you want, not an ubuntu user)
>>
Why doesn't Canonical do it like Arch where you actually build the stuff you get from the user repos? Installing plain binaries from literally somewhere is just like downloading an install.msi ...
>>
>>61196775
Because a centralized buildsystem is more convenient for the large majority of users and is faster both for the maintainer as well as the end user. Arch lumps development headers with software packages. That's why it's so fucking bloated. Debian-based distros don't

Compiling large software isn't fucking fun, especially when your hardaware isn't up to snuff.
>>
>>61196820
>Arch lumps development headers with software packages.
um that's a good thing. Makes compiling way easier

do you enjoy hunting down 50 different dev packages every time you compile? The end result is the same, arch just makes it easier

>do you enjoy hunting down 50 different dev packages every time you compile?
wat
We have build-deb <package>, which pulls what you need to build a package. Why would you want to bloat up your systemd with build stuff for every lil shit you'll never going to compile anyway?
