Here's my thought about Mac AND Windows:
The only reason to get a Mac is if you need software (literal need - like for a job) that isn't available on Windows/Linux, and the only reason to get Windows is if you need software (again, literal need) that isn't available on Linux.

Macs are overpriced, but at least they aren't as much of a botnet as Windows.

If you don't play video games on PC and want an OS that just werks, OSX / macOS is superior to Windows and all its bloatware / malware. Also I rate the longevity of their hardware highly.

All that said, if this 7 year old macbook ever dies I will likely not buy another mac because it's still hard to justify the pricetag. I'd consider building a hackintosh though because the OS is really nice.
>>
>>61182203

>Macs are overpriced

How do you still not comprehend this? Apple are the only company seriously shipping computers with their own operating systems from the start. They're as much a software company as they are a hardware one. Windows OEMs just need to make a machine then slap some Windows installation on it, they have no fucking software divisions eating up cash for upkeep and development of a range of operating systems for different devices. Where's Dell's or Lenovo's software division? It doesn't exist. At MOST they make some shitty bloatware single tool program, like ThinkVantage which nobody even uses.

It is not a fucking difficult concept to understand. Seriously, how do you not get it by now that they're not 'overpriced'? They'd need something comparable to be deemed overpriced, and no such thing exists. If a company like Lenovo started making their own custom Linux-based OS to go on all their machines then they'd have some competition.
>>
>>61182158
quite useless
the only reason why anyone should buy is developing for apple devices imo

>>
>>61182258
What kind of argument is that? MS stays in business without charging an arm and a leg for their OS, and the hardware devs stay in business without charging an arm and a leg for the hardware. So, with that knowledge in mind, why does apple need to charge an arm and a leg for their middling hardware combined with their OS?
>>
>>61182310
Very true.
>>
>>61182276

They're a big company because of their prices, being a big company allowed them to make the things they make. Its a fucking BUSINESS, their sole purpose is to make money, what do you expect? At least they're the most thoughtful company while they rape your wallet. At least there's some art and some love from Jony Ive and team. Other computer companies just peddle you thing they themselves do not want to use. Executives of all big tech companies selling you devices all go home to an ecosystem of Apple products. They don't use what they tell you is so great that you should buy. Apple are one of the few companies who design things they themselves love and want to use. That's why people trust them more and feel they're more genuine. All Apple employees involved in products are actually using the products they create.

>>61182283

I have no idea. To this date still nobody can even sell 1 machine on par with a Mac in terms of user experience, never mind a whole fucking deeply established ecosystem of products and services like Apple have been doing for the past two decades. They're so ahead its almost unfair.
>>
>>61182310

Microsoft have only just started making their own hardware as a formerly OS-only company. Apple doesn't and never has sold their OS to other companies. Apple have made both their own hardware and software since the fucking 80s. You do not even know what you're even trying to compare.
>>
>>61182317
Here's a business, HP. They don't pay an arm and a leg for their machines. I use a 199 dollar laptop right now from HP and it works really well.

>I have no idea. To this date still nobody can even sell 1 machine on par with a Mac in terms of user experience, never mind a whole fucking deeply established ecosystem of products and services like Apple have been doing for the past two decades. They're so ahead its almost unfair.

So, you're saying that the MacOS is what is worth so much money? That would at least be an argument. Not one I happen to agree with, but one nonetheless. It sure as shit isn't the hardware that makes Macs worth the money.

>Microsoft have only just started making their own hardware as a formerly OS-only company. Apple doesn't and never has sold their OS to other companies. Apple have made both their own hardware and software since the fucking 80s. You do not even know what you're even trying to compare.
You speak as though they are the ones developing literally everything that goes into their computer, like their RAM is a very special kind of RAM. Like their intel chips were made in-house. They weren't. Their OS is the experience, true, but there's no reason that they couldn't just license the OS out, so this doesn't exactly strike me as a point FOR apple, but a point AGAINST it.

Has Apple made a keyboard that doesn't suck yet?

The computer labs in my old schools were all Macs and I would always type so fast the imputs literally wouldn't register. It took me twice as long to type because every word was always missing two or three letters.
>>
>>61182364

>Apple only makes Macs, no other product lines or services

You cannot be this fucking dumb.

>>61182366

>So, you're saying that the MacOS is what is worth so much money?

Congratulations you finally caught on. The reason why Macs are special is perfiectly married hardware and software existing in an ecosystem of other products as a bonus also made by them in the same fashion. Nobody else is doing this. Google tries to, but they're mostly sub-par and shit.

>You speak as though they are the ones developing literally everything that goes into their computer

Apple has more custom designed, or even requested components and technologies than any other consumer tech company. If you don't keep up with their dozens of acquisitions every year then I'm not going to spoonfeed you years worth of news articles. Almost everything they put into a product is either in-house designed or a custom request with a few tweaks.
>>
>>61182158
This conversation again. I can't believe this threads keep popping up. Take a look at what tech companies give to their employees. Even IBM started issuing MacBooks. They are Unix machines with a nice UI and UX.
Normies will like them because of the UI and UX as well. Add to that brand recognition and the fact that if you don't want to you could have absolutely no idea how it works and still use it very well.
>>
>>61182402
>Apple has more custom designed, or even requested components and technologies than any other consumer tech company
Name some of them that go in their Macs, for which there is no out-of-apple competitor, and no possibility of licensing (like, say the Amazon branded lightning cords). Just a handful will do.

Otherwise, you're blowing smoke. You could sell the OS by itself without including it with middling hardware, and let people build their own apple rigs. You seem to think that iOS just wouldn't be as good unless you had their middling hardware powering it, yet have provided no evidence as to why it would be worse if you could build your own.

My Macbook Air from 2015 (and it was apple refurbished even then) is the best laptop I have ever used. It's a pleasant experience instead of the "gimped" experience I always had with laptops. No mouse needed.

Expensive as fuck, I wouldn't do full price, and you can get "more powerful" laptops but the user experience is 100% on point.

2. great screen if its an imac or a laptop, specs dont really matter in 1980+37, all workload should be done by specialized machines
3. pretty good unix with great ui/ux and all standards compliant
4. i guess i'd agree, you shouldnt buy them if youre poor.
>>
I don't care that much. I use Windows at home, just moved to a software company that's standardized on Macs. Learning new keyboard shortcuts and the funky modifier keys has slowed me down, but my terminal stuff is the same as Linux and most of my tools are cross-platform so w/e. I wouldn't buy one myself, but if I were to get a new computer I'd get a refurbished Dell machine.

I agree but expect that others will not.

The overpriced meme is only true in the sense that if you buy a mac, you replace everything. So you know, you buy a new keyboard, you buy a new screen, because it's all included as part of the new mac. But if you are reading this on a computer right now you already have a monitor, a mouse, probably a keyboard. So you don't need to buy the whole thing again.

So when you buy a mac you spend a lot of money getting a brand new everything, when if you just wanted to upgrade to play gaems all you need is a new video card which is much much cheaper. So in that sense, getting a new Mac is overpriced. If you actually look at what you get, it's not really overpriced.
>>
>>61183507
A new keyboard and mouse warrants the over 1000 dollar price tag, no. That makes no fucking sense.
>>
>>61183532
What is the screen, the fast SSD, the operating system, etc?

Honestly that device is one of the best inventions out of apple. Of course people decried it due to lol too thin only one port etc but that shit is still a great computer. I mean Microsoft ripped it off this year with the Surface Laptop because so many students were still buying it and even then I'm not sure Surface Laptop is better, and it's been how long after the Air released?

When I saw my sisters air I liked it so much it's why I bought a Macbook Pro myself. That shit is underrated, one of Jerbs best inventions at Apple next to the iPhone. It has magsafe and all that shit so it has some advantages even over newer laptops. Everyone is following the slim meme it started too. That thing is a piece of computing history.
>>
I liked my Macbook Air. It was pretty cosy, and felt pretty nice when the body warmed up a bit. Especially in the Winters.
It sucked that it had 2GB unupgradeable memory. Would gladly keep using it if I could add another 2GB or so to it.
I wouldn't mind getting another Mac, but I'm not about to pay for one. I'm thankful I got mine for free from college course.
Going to sell it soon, then buy a new laptop with better specs, and probably try some Linux distro.

The screens and sdds are overkill, that's what they are.

The screens have ppi way higher than you can see(including by apples retina standards), and just waste battery and performance. Pretty good colors though of course.

The nvme sdds are the same, outside of niche and high performance uses they don't make the machine perceptably faster.

The biggest reason for NVMe is the lower power use. Besides, now that they are upgrading from their ancient filesystem, they will probably offer a bigger benefit. Storage can't really be too fast. Of course at some point it becomes less noticeable but the improvements will always be there.
>>
>>61183709
In US dollars that's still not too far off. You can break it down part by part and see how much more a Mac really is if you don't believe me.

The meme of the overpriced Mac is an old meme that has been around a long time.

I forgot also and it might be worth mentioning, a Windows 10 license cost plus some quality speakers is another factor to take into account if you are going to try this out. Try building up a PC similarly specced to a Mac with all these things and see how much you save. I'm not saying it won't still end up higher but you might be surprised.

Or just google, it's been done on other sites.
