Looking to step up my audio set up somewhat, and am in the market for speakers + a headphone amp. Which of the following options do you reckon I should go with?:

Option A: http://a.co/3Bkvvjr (Yamaha receiver w/ headphone out) + http://a.co/62BqnW6 (Micca MB42x)

Total = ~$230

OR

Option B: http://a.co/eK4BWYU (Cheap lepy speaker amp) + http://a.co/62BqnW6 (Micca MB42x) +Schiit Magni

Total = ~$210

Already own HD 600s, and won't be listening too loudly as I live in a college dorm.

Thoughts?

I've had tinnitus for two years and it's annoying, but it never really affected my headphone listening. Over the last month my left ear has ramped up x3 in terms of tinnitus whine and my my hearing in that ear has gone to shit. Testing out my usual 'left/right channel audio test' via google has been shocking. Incredibly muffled sounding in the left ear. I haven't bothered listening to music whilst my ear has been this way, it's pointless.

I booked an appointment with my doctor in order to see an ear specialist again (the first time I had to do this I was diagnosed with tinnitus) and now I'm going to cancel that appointment because of my pic related. I bought it for £5 from amazon, used it with warm water and I couldn't believe what happened. Nothing really came out of my ear, despite amazon reviews showing literal disgusting chunks of wax coming out. However my ear felt lighter and I knew something was different. I went back in my room, did my go to left/right channel test and my ear sounded 100% normal. I couldn't be fucking happier. I was expecting an ear specialist to tell me that 'this was it' and that I'd have to deal with it. I was close to selling all of my gear and forgetting about this hobby completely. Wew lads. Fucking wew.

Here's the link in case anyone else out there has a suspect ear or two.

How durable is the Sennheisser HD558? I want to get the rebranded Best Buy ones since they're on sale, but the only replacement plan they're offering me is for $20 for 4 years (which is ridiculous, I remember it being $6 for 2 years before). If they're durable enough maybe I could just avoid buying a plan.
>>
>>61176752
10 years easily by replacing earpads a couple times.
Over ear, unless shit tier, are usually pretty durable, unlike on ear.
>>
>>61176752
They're durable enough if you treat them well. I don't think they'll just fall apart on you. I'm not sure a replacement plan for a discontinued headphone is such a good idea. If you needed to get it replaced for some reason, they might make you "upgrade" to an HD559, which is really a downgrade.

I'd also recommend what my dad was told by his doctor for an ear infection he had, but helps with ringing ears: lay on your side and put a few drops of Hydrogen Peroxide (50% from the drugstore will do) and wait until it stops fizzing, usually half an hour. It will tickle/itch for awhile but it will pass. When it's done put a towel on your ear and lay on the opposite side for a few minutes to let it drain out.

I was having an occassional ringing in my left ear for awhile and this cleared it right up.

Online measurements suggest that I will only need two peak filters to remove two treble peaks, so that leaves me six more filters to work with since I'm going to be generating EQ settings for Rockbox, which allows for 8 peak filters. In Room EQ Wizard, I set my target level for the bottom of the valley in the above measurement at ~850 Hz, set up these settings and then clicked match response to target. This generated EQ settings which made 20 Hz to 850 Hz flat.

>>
>>61177164
For EQ'ing the treble response I identify the locations of the two treble peaks using Sinegen as described by https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Headphones#SineGen
This online measurement suggests there will be treble peaks at ~5 kHz and ~8 kHz, and with the stock HJE120 eartips, there were peaks to my ears at these locations, but the Spinfits shifted the locations of these peaks while leaving the bass response pretty much untouched.
>>
>>61177179
If you can afford it, I don't see why not desu.
Besides being one box and balanced, it also has plenty of power to boot.
>>

Schiit stack. Or fulla 2 as the dac and magni as an amp. They sound the fucking same. Only difference is that the fulla 2 has multiple uses, and it's portable. It doesn't look as cool I know. After playing around with Sinegen for a while I was able to generate two peak filters which successfully remove the treble peaks and create a smooth treble response. My final EQ settings, after adjusting them to make them compatible with Rockbox, are as follows:
Filter Settings file

Room EQ V5.19
Dated: Jul 1, 2017 1:13:33 PM

Notes:

Equaliser: Generic
Jul 1 13:10:08
Filter 1: ON PK Fc 20 Hz Gain -8.6 dB Q 2.000
Filter 2: ON PK Fc 50 Hz Gain -7.8 dB Q 2.000
Filter 3: ON PK Fc 30 Hz Gain -7.2 dB Q 2.000
Filter 4: ON PK Fc 90 Hz Gain -7.0 dB Q 2.000
Filter 5: ON PK Fc 300 Hz Gain -3.9 dB Q 1.000
Filter 6: ON PK Fc 160 Hz Gain -5.9 dB Q 2.000
Filter 7: ON PK Fc 4,040 Hz Gain -9.0 dB Q 3.000
Filter 8: ON PK Fc 8,400 Hz Gain -7.0 dB Q 5.400

The end result: the sound signature, subjectively, matches very closely the sound signature of my speakers which I just got done correcting with Equalizer APO's convolver. Pic related is my post-correction speaker measurement. I consider this experiment a massive success.
I usually have problems getting single flange tips to seal in my right ear but the Spinfits seal great in both of my ears, so I highly recommend them. If you have HJE120s and Spinfits, the first six filters here should flatten your bass perfectly. The locations (Hz values) of the last two filters, to your ears, may be different, and you'll need to play with Sinegen to find these exact locations, but the gain and Q values should be close enough for your ears, so you can probably just find the locations with Sinegen then enter my gain and Q values and you'll be good to go.

Pic related = Post-EQ distortion measurement at ~100 dB, which is quite loud. Odd order harmonic distortion never exceeds 0.73%. Total harmonic distortion never exceeds 0.698%. These are acceptable distortion levels, especially for ~100 dB, which is louder than most will listen at.

Pic related = Post-EQ waterfall response. No treble ringing. Acceptable.
Conclusion: Panasonic RP-HJE120 with Spinfits, at $19, represent an excellent candidate for equalization. The result of proper equalization is an extremely comfortable IEM with a balanced sound signature, acceptable distortion levels and an absence of treble ringing. If you were lucky enough to get a Clip+ before they were discontinued, with HJE120s and Spinfits properly equalized you can have a transparent, balanced sounding, comfortable on-the-go solution for ~$50.

i have the e10k and I don't really know if there's a difference between using it and just directly onto my PC (I have a Z97 mobo or something). I dunno if the E10K is worth it or I didn't even need a DAC/amp in the first place with my mobo to power my K702. I'll be getting the HD6XX eventually too.

dunno about laptop mobos though.

I'll probably get a Schiit stack eventually before my HD6XX comes in. Is there really even a difference or is it just placebo?
>>
>>61177479
Not who you're talking to but the schiit amps/dacs are better than the e10k. The e10k is very close, but not quite as good. The 600/650 with the schiit stack, or the magi+fulla2 (more options) is the way to go. You're literally done at that point. It's time to explore and enjoy the music.
>>
>>61177470
If you compared them side by side, sure. The 558 costs only a bit more, and it's worth it. They used to cost around $150. $70 is an excellent price for it.

Also the earpads can be easily replaced down the line. The ones on the SHP9500 are not designed to be replaceable.

It might help instilling drops of mineral oil into your ears every bedtime for a few days before syringing to soften the wax. That's what a lot of doctors seem to prescribe for residents at long-term care facilities. There's probably some leftover wax that isn't being flushed out.

The fact that my measurement and >>61177191 both show a ~10 dB bass boost, however, tells me that it's measuring the 20 to 1,000 Hz response pretty accurately, which is all I intended it to do.
>>
>>61177725
Your'e right, imo the difference is small. In terms of the e10k vs the fulla or magni, I would say that the e10k sounds a slightly bit thinner. It's definitely not as full sounding as the schiit gear, though some here will try and tell you otherwise.

The magni is a clean power house, buy that and buy the fulla 2 as your dac. As a dac it's no worse than the modi, but you will ave a portable dac+amp with multiple outputs which is handy as fuck.
>>
>>61177760
Thanks for that, i'll look into it. I'm just so giddy that my left ear isn't actually fucked. Ideally I'll use an oil and this syringe every so often and stop using q-tips altogether. Every doctor ever has told me that using them is a no no. I always wondered what they do? if anything at all.

A capful of 3% hydrogen peroxide left in your ear while lying on your other side for ~10 minutes will loosen any leftover wax in your ear just fine. Overnight mineral oil isn't necessary. I suffer from abnormally large amounts of earwax production so I know the deal very well.
The hydrogen peroxide bubbling in your ear will feel and sound very odd. It's a unique experience.
>>
>>61177906
You're probably best off buying a schiit stack, or a magni and whatever cheap dac you want. nfb-11 seem a hassle to actually but, and they're fucking huge.
>>
>>61177919
I should add, use the syringe again after doing the hydrogen peroxide soak. The hydrogen peroxide soak might temporarily cause your ear to be clogged but it'll come right out after the syringe use.

well my plan is to just get the schiit stack and forget about DAC/amps forever because they should be pretty simple stuff that should not even be subjective like headphones.

I'll look into what the "uber" even means for the magni/modi. I want to get the modi if only because at least both of them look cool together stacked. Then I'll just give my E10K away to my dad since I got a 2nd pair of HD6XX for him as well, hopefully those will be good enough to drive them.

This warm water syringe has fixed my problem so far, happy for now. I've never had a wax problem before so I'll look into other things in the future. How does your was affect you? do q tips always end up looking disgusting? is your hearing affected? Genuinely curious.

That's huge compared the the schiit stack. Or a magni on your desk with a fulla 2 as a dac hidden wherever you want. That's what I do. The amp you're looking at is massive and awkward to buy. I can't say if it's better than my setup but I highly doubt it.

Listening to my convolver-corrected speakers right now, fuck, these sound so much better than they did when I was just using EQ correction to the same signature. Bass that wasn't there before due to room nulls is now present and sounding wonderful. I'd highly recommend anyone who listens to music on speakers to go out and get a Room EQ Wizard compatible measurement mic ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06W2L9LSR/ is $58 in USA and seems to be the most affordable option ) and learn how to do convolver correction with Room EQ Wizard and Equalizer APO. The tl;dr is you measure each channel separately with the mic placed where your head will go, automatically generate EQ filters in REW to correct to your desired target line, export filters impulse reponse as WAV for both channel measurements and then load those WAVs as shown here in Equalizer APO. Adjust preamp gain until the analysis panel shows peak gain as -0.1 dB as shown here to prevent clipping.

If I wait too long to clean my ears one of my ears will eventually become completely impacted and I'll lose quite a bit of volume in one ear. I don't ever use Q-tips, but when I use the syringe I generally get lots of chunks of wax coming out into the sink.
I also have to clean my IEMs after every use since they always get wax on them.
>>
>>61177992
>is the nfb-11 worth it in terms of hardware?

Yeah, it's built by chinks but the majority of the internal components are not chink. They're high quality parts from good brands, for example a lot of it is Japanese.

>>61178062
The Schiit stack is actually just relatively small. You could look at the NFB-11 as being like both units in one, but it's also better in pretty much every way. I can take a picture of it on my desk for a size reference if you'd like.

Spinfits didn't make them sound better or worse to my ears, but they help it stay in place in my right ear better, something I've always had trouble with.
The bass response measured the same for me with the Spinfits and the default tips, so the first 6 filters in >>61177264 should actually work for you right now and give you flat, accurate bass response. Use Sinegen while adjusting Equalizer APO EQ manually to figure out the frequencies, gain values and Q values of the two treble peaks as your own ears hear them. They should be around 5 kHz and 8 kHz with stock tips. Just keep adjusting the last two filters and playing with Sinegen until the treble response in those areas is smooth without noticeable peaks or valleys while sweeping through the treble with Sinegen.
>>
>>61178106
Yeah, that doesn't sound 'normal' to me. I never get wax on iems etc.

>If I wait too long to clean my ears one of my ears will eventually become completely impacted and I'll lose quite a bit of volume in one ear

This sounds like my left ear recently, even though nothing came out after using the syringe? I guess I'll be using my syringe every month or so just to make sure that my ears are as clear as they can be. I'm going to to use a q tip after a whole month and see if it shows heavy dirt after using the syringe much earlier. If it doesn't do anything I'm never going to use them again.

They're the closed version of the 668B's so if you need the isolation, there's your backup headphones. Although they clamp a bit harder than 668B's, they're really comfy and never fail to get a consistent seal.

You have a nice looking setup overall, but that angle flatters that amp. You can't compare it to a magni, especially when you can hide the fulla 2 anywhere as the dac, and as a portable amp+dac. That thing is huge in comparison and you know it. If you haev a use for the inputs the n fair enough. Otherwise, you may have been memed. Though at this point, you already own it, so you may as well keep it as an end game set up.

Anyone feel like talking about mid-fi portable options? I own open back headphones that I like but I also would like the option to take my next pair to college with me and use them on public transportation, so IEM or closed back.
Does IEM have any distinct disadvantages over larger over ear headphones? There has to be more to sound than frequency response.
HD600 and DT880 aren't part of this discussion, which is nice.
I'm going to list some headphones that I think are interesting now and hopefully some of you guys will respond and we can have an actual discussion in this thread instead of the cancer we've enjoyed lately.

ATH-MSR7: Gorgeous looking headphones. That weird audiophile guy from the crying gif said they sound good. Supposedly pretty bright. Sounds like a mass appeal sound signature.

MDR7506: Only $100 but are they still relevant in 2017?

VMODA m100: Probably pretty good for electronic music right? Very portable, not ugly.

Shure SRH840: Don't know much about them.

What other headphones are worth considering in the 100-200ish range? Can IEMs at the same price offer a better experience?

Opus actually preserving the signal up to 20 kHz will have a much bigger positive effect on sound quality than the completely inaudible effects of upsampling using competent software. Audible lossy artifacts are generally caused by loss of high frequency data.

You seriously shouldn't worry about resampling. Among the shit a lossy codec will do to the source wave (pretty much recreate as an aproximation that tries to favor what psycho-acoustics say matters), the resampling part isn't going to matter at all.
OPUS is the best general-purpose lossy codec, even when it is resampling, which will definitely happen with 44.1KHz source files.

IEMs will always have an "inside the head" character to the sound, because they don't interact with the outer ear/head like headphones do.

great, slightly bright but well extended on both ends, balanced

>MDR7506
amazing, one of my favorite headphones. not neutral and it can be sibilant, but with eq and proper pads it shines. sounds better than all the other headphones I've used until you break $200 imo, because the bass impact and detail are so good. NOT for portable use though, they don't isolate well and the cable is cumbersome. maybe with modding it would be ok.

>VMODA m100
overpriced fart cannons. for bassheads it might be ok, and it does isolate well with good comfort and build quality, but the bass boost is crazy, like over 10db iirc.

>Shure SRH840
not bad but kinda pointless. it's less neutral than say the m40x and costs more. I've heard people say it sounds a bit bloated and generally uneven, though not adhering hard to any one sig. and there is nothing special about it to make up for not being a good value.

personally for a portable headphone I like the hp50 the best. over budget at $250 but it isolates great and sounds amazing, it's honestly one of the best closed headphones you can buy, and a good value. it sounds noticeably better than $100 stuff and it's close to the $500 range stuff. downside is it looks dorky on the head. It's like the warm equivalent of the msr7, better stock pads too. oh and it's the only headphone I know where you can choose which side it terminates on.

I don't like the idea of expensive IEMs because of the inside the head sound and the ease of loss/breakage. though I know many are fine with crazy expensive IEMs. I like cheap stiff, hje-120 (most comfortable non-CIEM) and piston 3 (with foams) are my favorites so far

Asgard was one of the first two products released by Schiit.
This issue affected some units among the first sold. No drivers were actually blown.
They stopped shipping the amps and added protection relays to the design, retrofitting them into existing stock and already sold units, for free.
Pretty good handling of the issue, if you ask me.

Not at all. Leather is extremely plush, and the band distributes weight pretty well.

>>61178963
They're pretty portable, they do fold up and the plastic is a little sturdier than it looks, although obviously I'd be careful with them.

I've owned the $20 Monoprice memephones, Samson SR850s and SR950s, and some stupid gayming headphones. The CB-1s are easily better, although the one thing I can say is that the Samsons' leather band + metal frame was superior to the rubber + leather band that these use.

yeah it's bassy/juiced, but way less than most IEMs which stray into the category of fatiguing v-shaped sound more often than not, even the expensive ones. the hje-120 is not fatiguing. it's also $7 for pretty much the most comfortable IEM that has an easy fit with shallow insertion.
>>
>>61175118
Yes you did. I own the original 300 and its pretty crap.

Teac CT-H02 or Tascam TH-02 (5 more dollars) They are very uncomfortable

or some gaming headset from china like this

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/High-Quality-V6-USB-Led-Deep-Bass-Game-Headphone-Stereo-Surrounded-Headband-Gaming-Headset-with-Microphone/32812008871.html

It may look like a mind controlling device which turns you into a fuck boi, and it very well may be. But it'll sound better than that headphone you just bought.

>>61176390
Chinese no name pads is what you should buy

I use to use some offbrand sony xb950 pads (not as good as hm5 pads but pretty comfortable) but in reality most pads are going to be more comfortable than the shit stock pads of the M50.

That has to be a faulty pair. Measurements by Goldenears, Reference Audio Analyzer and myself all place the bass boost at 8-10 dB. I do not believe that 18 dB bass boost there is representative of the HJE120 at all and the channel matching on my pair and GE's pair is nowhere near that bad.

>>

9500 goes ~$50 regularly on Newegg
>>
>>61179843
I wouldn't assume that a single outlier = awful QC. My measurement, Goldenears' measurement and Reference Audio Analyzer's measurement are consistent with one another. I'm still baffled by what, exactly, could cause them to measure with 8 more dB of bass than every other measurement of them.
>>
>>61177371
I made a typo in this post: total harmonic distortion never exceeded 0.896%. That's still acceptable, especially at 100 dB. The majority of headphones Tyll measures exceed 1% THD at 100 dB in at least one place. I'm actually quite surprised and pleased by the low distortion of $10 IEMs.
>>
>>61180030
>save and get a 558 and do the foam mod

do this
>>
>>61180138
I wouldn't recommend voiding the warranty by doing the foam mod unless you're already going to be disassembling them to make them accept a BoomPro. The difference in sound the foam mod creates is so minimal it's not worth the effort of voided warranty. It only adds like 2 dB of upper midrange response according to the measurements.
>>
>>61180151
Why would it void your warranty? Who's going to know you took it apart? It's simple enough to stick the piece of foam back in there if you're paranoid.
>>
>>61180151
it makes it a proper open headphone with all that implies. airy highs and such, plus the clarity that comes from just removing the reflections off the pad. the 558 sounds kind of muddy and bloated without it. besides the mod is very simple, and even if there is a sticker or something to prove you opened them, it's nothing that would prevent you from just returning them to amazon. plus the mod can be reversed.
>>
>>61180053
get a 668b then, it has bass.
>>
>>61177264
If you prefer a Harman target-like response to a flat bass response, you can add a low shelf filter in Rockbox with the following settings to approximate the Harman target response: gain 6 dB, Q 0.7, cutoff frequency 100 Hz. If your EQ uses slope instead of Q/bandwidth for low shelves, do 100 Hz, 6 gain, slope 12 dB/Oct. You won't need to compensate with preamp because the peak filters will bring down the bass response so much that the low shelf won't boost it into clipping.

Any good for running budget earphones that are worth buying? Might be chink shit as well.

Fashion. Not going to lie I half want to buy a pair and make my wife wear them while I fuck her.

Look into the mdr1000x as well

Need some advice.
I've just gone for the HD6XX. My current dac/amp are nothing outstanding (Creative E5 and Fiio E17). Wondering if I should consider something like a Schiit stack or the Creative X7.

Can't you just get a pair of cat ears from an adult shop for that?

Don't you have to wait a really long time to actually get them though? Like months and months? You know Amazon has them for $250 regularly

He can't play recordings of Jamal on regular cat ears without the little speakers on top.

schiit.
Creative, never again. Got two xfis and an audigy 2 collecting dust in a drawer.

I'll take em

They sound bad, and the windows drivers are crashy.
Even the free Linux drivers (for the xfi cards) are a little glitchy.
Still, I do have some uses for them (they've got good inputs, and they do hw synth), just not on my current setup.
In a few month, once I move somewhere else, perhaps. I don't even have a keyboard here :X

I like them.

The lack of bass is a bummer but that's open-back headphones for you. The comfy factor makes up for it.

Aren't they just an updated HD 598?
