Personal/portable music player thread /pmp/

Useful guide(s)
• Converting an iPod video 5G/5.5G to a rockboxed player with an msata SSD and a 3000 mAh battery http://nullvoid.station.moe/Freedom-Hardware/Video5G-Rockbox/
• Rockbox 3.14 released, battery life for Sansa clip claims to be doubled for some
• Got any? Want them included in the OP of future /pmp/ threads? Then post them itt!
• We're also in need of possible /pmp/ OP pics, slap some fake album art together in photoshop or alter some album tags (for those on Sansa's) take a good picture of your mediaplayer of choice displaying said /pmp/ album

Anon with his Clip+ can at least go to 64GB, you just have to reformat the SD card as something other than exFAT, which most things can't read because lolpatents. I'm not sure if 128/256GB works, things designed for the SDHC standard may not be able to address that much memory, but I'm not an expert.

Anyone happen to know if the mSATA mod for an iPod 5.5G is preferable to using a CF card? It seems like it might be cheaper/easier but I really have no idea.

Shame you can't use the wheel up top to go through songs or something. Only being able to click through songs one at a time kills it for me. It's such a cool device though.
I would like to be able have some kind of organization on top of individual songs. Playlists, folders, whatever. Clicking a button once per song for any decent collection would be insane.

I did however end up getting a gen 1 white ipod nano and that was an amazing device. I got in on the early days of a now dead project called Ipod Linux that allowed it to play videos and, of course, doom.

Received a 120 GB iPod Classic from my sis-in-law (she's moving overseas and is getting rid of some stuff)

Currently have a Clip+ with Rockbox and a 64 GB microSD and it's good enough, listening with VE Monks.

Is it worth switching to the iPod?

She used it a lot while running (training for 10K and some marathons) so im afraid the disk wont resist much. Is it normal hearing some clicks while switching songs? Never used a HDD based iPod before, had a Creative Zen 10 years ago and the HDD just buzzed, didn't clicked
>>
>>61184854
The iPod can last 30h on rockbox, more if you extend the battery.
It's not as portable however.
You can do the SSD of mSD mod.
>>
>>61184945
The Clip+ lasts 22h with 3.14 so that's a negligible gain.

>>
>>61188808
meh, phone + dac/amp seems more reasonable. phones do more, they have better battery life usually, with a separate amp/dac they probably sound as good or better and can provide more power depending on what kind.

so what you're loosing is size and physical controls, and using inline IEM controls isn't that limiting to me personally.

it seems PMPs have gotten more expensive, bigger, and with shorter battery life over time, probably because they cater to people who want to listen to he-6 on the train.
>>
>>61188912
Inline controls are lost through a DAC/AMP, so it'd be inconvenient to control.
The stuff that isn't overengineered and/or designed by chinks last 20-40 hours, maybe more.
Of course battery life is gonna be shit if you have desktop-grade DACs and and a giant amp circuit on a 2200mah battery.
>>
>>61189021
yeah I forgot about loosing controls. still, no small PMPs with good battery life and opus support other than clip+ or extremely expensive stuff, and phones.

I'll either get a clip+ or go the phone route. I'm looking at phones that have 20 hours SOT so I'm sure they could play music, even with a dac/amp sucking power, for at least that long. I wish phone makers would just shell out the extra dollar or whatever for non-hiss amps. you would expect that in phones that aren't bottom-barrel cheap but apparently not. maybe I should give up on IEMs and go full mdr-1000x with bluetooth and all that shit.
>>
>>61189160
Portable DAC/AMP have their own battery.
Audio on phones is hit or miss, sometimes even with supposedly high audio quality phones. Remember to get a dac+amp device.
Hell, a iPod classic is still smaller than modern phones, and there are the walkmans still.
Also, carrying 2 devices strapped together might be more annoying that you think.
>>
>>61186256

oh, we have patch cables so we can play it over the radio comms.
>>
Hey guys, i got a question. I bought a broken iPod video 5.5 for 27 bucks few weeks ago, it has cracked faceplate and dead battery. Until now I only change the battery to a 450 mA battery and install rockbox, now how many hours of running time should I expect?
I got varying result with my iPod, my top time is something like 24 hours but my last running time from 100% only last me up to a little more than 9 hours. Also, I played mostly FLAC files.
>>
>>61176477
it should because it's chinese desu
>>
>>61189272
>Portable DAC/AMP have their own battery.

I've been seeing quite a few more that are phone-powered recently, some draw so little power that the effect on battery is negligible, maybe loosing an hour or two off the total time when in use. the downside being you don't get much extra power if any, but that's fine for non-hungry headphones/IEMs at low volumes which is what I tend to use. and they're small enough to not have to strap them to the phone, doubling the thickness, you can just leave them on the line (though if I did that I might want to rig something to lessen the change of it falling off). dragonfly black for example. though those cost about as much if not more than a cheap PMP in itself, though they seem to be able to decode a lot more meme formats. I don't care about that, I just want hiss and possible coloration gone. I think past the point of transparency there is no point in "higher quality" gear/formats.

stuff like FLAC needs more processing power to decode, so it drains the battery faster. depending on software, the difference can be huge. I have a jank homebrew player on my PSP that lets me use mp3engine to play mp3 files with the CPU clocked as low as 20mhz (stock menu clock is 200-300mhz). it pretty much doubles the battery life. if you modded in a bigger battery into the PSP I could see it getting over 20 hours of music. unfortunately it's buggy and crashes or plays long mp3 files (audiobooks) with fucked up audio. maybe I can track down an updated version some day. I think it's called "mp3lite by sakya".
>>
>>61189468
>stuff like FLAC needs more processing power to decode
nah, if anything it only needs more reads from storage. Decoding FLAC is less demanding than mp3 even.
See rockbox.
>>
>>61187876
Tall order desu
>>
>>61189491
it must be the reads that are decreasing battery life then, or maybe it's just the software on the players I've used is not optimized :/. but if reads were the problem, couldn't you just load an album or whatever into RAM when you start playing it? I guess most PMPs don't have enough memory for that.

>>
>>61191157
yes, it's good. the UI and controls take getting used to somewhat, but it's not laggy and has a bunch of features, good battery life too. the build is decent, it might be worth getting something with a better build as there are many players on ali that are basically an x02 in a different shell. I have an original and one of the buttons no longer clicks properly, though it still works, but because it can be depressed so easily if you don't lock the controls it could do something in your pocket. also, if you listen to audiobooks, it has a sleep timer and bookmarks which is good, but sometimes the bookmarks don't stick if you completely power off, and/or you have to navigate back to that specific track and start again from the main menu. only has this happen with power off though, on sleep it wakes to where you were. also the fast forwards and back are slow if you listen to long tracks, it can get annoying, plus it's not continuous (I've found this on a lot of players), so if you want to get to the last part of track A quickly, you can't just skip to track B then rewind continuously into the end of track A, it will immediately go to the start of A or even a track further back. all the other features are suprisingly different and it has stuff that much more expensive players don't have like FM radio (with saved channels), recording, a decent eq, calendar, even (shitty) video playback. you can use the included video encoder to make a bloated, low-res version of any video file. I think that benjie one is the same but with a metal housing, not sure though. oh, another annoying thing is lock/unlock takes a button combo and it's slow. the player makes up for lack of buttons with combos and context menus and shit. wish the plain old hold button like on my PSP would make a comeback.

yeah, there are so many out there, many of which are very similar and/or are copies/renames. I would say all but the real stinkers are decent enough (x02) quality in the $10-30 range. $40-100 gets you the more premium PMPs, which usually have less features but support more formats, have more buttons, and have a better build. some support higher capacity SD cards or even 2 at once. once you break $100 you might as well go for the more reliable brands and their "cheaper" audiophile DAPs, like fiio X1 and such. I think I'll post some of the better looking ones I found on ali just to keep the thread going.

My Grandmother bought a Sansa Fuze+ a while ago for too much money and never used it, was still in the box... She asked me about it and ended up just giving it to me. After years of experience, I'll let you know how it works.

Good technology dies to be replaced by worse technology. The "worse" technology at first isn't that bad, so it seems bearable, but the cycle continues, and the worse technology continues to get worse.
See: desktop -> laptop -> smartphone/tablet -> ???

It's best to let go of the dead technologies you like, as the world will rob them from you at gunpoint at some point anyway.

AK KANN gets close at max 832 GB. As storage evolves it can go higher.
Technically all DAPs with external storage can go up to 2TB, those cards just don't exist yet.
Another option is iPod Classic with SSD mod, you can put a 1TB msata in.
Or the 4*mSD mod, with msd to SD adapters, should allow 4*512GB.
So yeah, you can get a 2TB DAP right now.

sony has always been among the best at physical device design practicality with aesthetics that are unique. I would put them on par with old IBM, they never needed to follow the apple route and their stuff actually has buttons. to bad all of their best stuff either doesn't have modern relevancy or is priced very high. but man, the way those old OLED screens shine though the shiny plastic, it's the original "bezel-less" look that is getting such a comeback now. and I love how they pack so much function into those rotating knob mechanisms. VIAO was great too.

Last thursday I accidentally pulled my headphones out mid-song and I don't know what happened, because everything now sounds like shit (think I damaged the 3.5mm socket). Not the headphones as they still work fine with pc and I tried another pair.

i flashed mine with agptek a02 firmware as should everyone. haven't had any button problems. hes wrong about power too, if you shutdown properly (sleep mode) and then switch the power off everything stays fine, if you just switch the power off then it tends to go back to either where it was when you last powered on or a seemingly random point since.

YO /B/ROS, I'M FROM [insert board here]. I'M A RETARD WHEN IT COMES TO MP3 PLAYERS, YOU THINK YOU CAN RECOMMEND ME A GOOD ONE FOR UNDER $200?
your phone/htc m8

>YEEEAAAH BUT, I DON'T WANT TO HAVE CRAPY AUDIO QUALITY
dacs and amps in modern phones are just fine

>YOU SURE ABOUT THAT? I MEAN I WANT GOOD QUALITY
htc m8 ks comparable to mid level DAPs and its also cheaper than mid level DAPs

>BUT I DON'T WANT TO DRAIN MY BATTERY BECAUSE I NEED IT
music playback barely effects battery life, plus your average phone with last three times longer than even the most high end DAP. it's not 2008 anymore

>BUT I NEED STORAGE FOR MY FLACS, BECAUSE I CAN TOTALLY GEAR THE DIFFERENCE WITH MY POORLY MASTERED BLACK METAL AND ANIME MUSIC
new phones can support more than 256gb of space, and that's just the micro sd card

>YEEAH, BUT-
your phone has access to Spotify, SoundCloud, Bandcamp, YouTube, Tidal and your whole music collection you can play with hundreds of music player apps of your choice and you also have Bluetooth to connect with anything, what more do you want?

I have an even older iPod photo and clicks happen, but it seems super stable. I'm sure the hdd will fail soon enough. It's only 20gb, I've been meaning to mod the thing forever but...just haven't. With your clip+ you really are getting everything you'd get with this iPod apart from a bit more storage and the need to use iTunes.

That said, I love ipods for some reason, and I'm sure you could sell that classic. Hell, I'd buy it.

Check /csg/. I'm using a benjie S5 - great battery life, physical controls, expandable storage. Screen is a bit small, but since I use it when mowing/biking or otherwise active I just shuffle all or start a playlist and go. Almost 20 hours and still ~50% battery left.

As the iPod classic is a present I can't morally sell it (even if it's second hand)

The Clip+ is not really appreciated outside /g/ so I will check if the classic is compatible with my cars sound system, I mean using the onboard remote. That could be a good use for it
>>
>>61219024

yeah so the primary goal of your comms is just that - to talk to other people over the radio. but there's definitely times when you're bored to death doing loops on ONE missions. here's an entire thread on baseops (the USAF flyer forum) on patch cables so you can listen to music while flying.
http://www.flyingsquadron.com/forums/topic/17-interphone-patch-cord/

anyways if you want to fly fighters, do well in school, look for leadership and sports positions, and do ROTC assuming you're not at the academy. that'll maximize your chances of getting selected for a pilot or CSO slot (the F-15E has WSOs, they all go through CSO school in Pensacola). once you've got your slot, keep studying and hope you've got normal vision. chairfly (visualize and practice) your rides, and understand the etiquette of flying - while you're pilot in command, you have to make your instructor happy too. if you're professional, smart (or at least well-studied), polite, and help out your classmates (after all, nobody graduates alone), you'll go far.

Were the tags managed by iTunes or some other software? iTunes has a habit of ditching the id3 tags and building a little database of album art.
>>
>>61219058
I get it. And I like the clip too, just never use mine. I did use them all the time at one point and now have a little collection of clips and pluses and one zip. But the old iPod and my phone tend to get the actual use.

It probably will work in your cars head unit and have the control accessibility, etc.

I bought a moto e for $12 new in box. It has SD card support and so I put a piece of Velcro on the back and Velcro on my dragonfly. It works but I may just go back to listening to music ony real phone, galaxy s4, I almost never use a phone so I don't see why I shouldn't.
Anyone else struggling to justify the purchase of a dedicated audio player? I feel like having a cool OTG supporting highly portable DAC like the dragonfly is superior

Some suggestions for OP:
Add a guide for iPod 6G/7G as well, it's pretty much the same as 5G anyway. Also the 3000mah battery is fake.
Change the clip zip battery line to "significant battery increase compared to 3.13". The battery increase was from the cpu scaling patches, which has been available on dev builds for a (long) while.
Remind people to use rockbox dev builds.
Maybe a list of recommended DAPs, and various resources (guides, reviews, ...)

Also the news section is kinda redundant. Might be better to make it shorter and limit it to actual news, like dap or software releases.

My original zune (zune30 maybe?) was such a great mp3 player. It lasted ages, the UI was gorgeous, it had simple drag and drop function, and the slidepad and buttons were the comfiest thing given the small form factor. I used to convert videos just to watch on it at work, and even with that tiny screen things still managed to be clear enough to read subtitles.

Now that I have a smartphone using anything besides an all in one device seems silly, even though phones will probably never eclipse the old slidepad in terms of nice controls. Is there any good argument to be made for mp3players other than avoiding the distractions of a phone? Ive considered getting another zune, but it seems rudundant if I have a note5.

It will allow you to remove the volume limiter/warnings (Europe) on most of the Walkman series.

It works a treat.

ok lemme post some good looking "x02-like" players you can buy now on ali. by "x02-like", I mean they all have similar capabilities and software (some with greater internal storage or reported higher max microsd capacity, some even report better dac and amp chips), all have similar screens, similar body and controls, some have more buttons etc. but they're all pretty similar in how they operate, some are just nicer than the others. if you want just a plain old good player, just get the original x02.

yeah looks good for the price, though I don't know about those controls, also I never know if I should trust chink sd card limitations, because this says it's only up to 32gb. also 7-band eq which is better than the usual 3-5 band you see in these players.
