I have a simple question. I am an owner of a T420s which I love other than one giant glaring flaw. Said flaw is forcing me to have second thoughts unfortunately. So here it is, the screen f-ing sucks. I mean it sucks bad. It's the 1600x900 but just looking at it makes me want to gouge my eyes out. The question is, what is the oldest T series Thinkpad (or Latitude or Pavilion) I can get that actually has a decent modern looking screen?

Look there buddy. I have a shitty Dell 3340 which is a good example of modern days computer. Its made out of plastic and feels very cheap, the keyboard layout is a mess (like always from a computer that was made in 2014) and the genuine design is bad and unreliable.
This computer is not thinkpad but it does not have to be to show it's point being proven. As you know, lenovo has dropped a lot classic and foremost useful features like ultrabay, so called legacy ports, rollcage, the simplicity to take it apart, easy to repair because they went the hard way (more expensive route) when they created these computers (for example the power jack and how it is connected to the motherboard via a cable) and of course the keyboard.

There is no point buying a "thinkpad" that does not have the thinkpad features. You would be better off just buying a regular computer than overrated and thus overpriced thinkpad. As a user of T30,T40,T60,T61 and X220, I can't stand people who use newer machines than XX30 (I hate xx30 users as well) because they do not represent the kind of thinkpads or the "thinkpad experience" in a way compared with these older thinkpads. You lost ultrabay, proper keyboard, even then dedicated trackpoint buttons in xx40 generation, rollcage, socketed CPUs and Ram slots, third party batteries that work without a bios mod due to lenovo whitelisting (which also impacts on other components as well), thinklight, proper docks and sliced batteries and the classic purple enter key.

tl;dr Go die in a fire faggot and X60 computers only
>>
>>61177178
If ain't broken, don't fix it.
Thinkpads during 2006 were fine. They should have not changed them from there on. I can allow T400 but xx10 are out of the question since they don't have complete roll cage.
>>

>socketed CPUs and Ram slots
Is all gone really that bad? The T440p still had socketed CPUs. Does the T460p have not? Too lazy to look it up myself, sorry. And what about RAMs, I guess not everything past XX40 is soldered, right?

What is your advice /tpg/ ?

Looking for a laptop

Budget: 900 max
Location: USA
Size: 13" - 17"
Performance: preferably i7 as i run a good number of VMs. Max RAM something like 12GB+ is probably ok.
HDD is okay, will upgrade to SSD. Prefer sata SSD vs m2
Other requirements:

Has to have:
- to be able to run current distros of linux.
- docking station / ability to connect 2 external displays
- 1080 minimum res.
- wifi

like to have:
- ability to fit 2 x SSD / HD
- bigger screen a plus
- USB 3
- backlit keyboard and / or thinklight
- numpad

enjoy the webm as thanks for your advice

Some batches(or all of them, I don't know) of x230(even t430) has build quality issues. You should've gone with a 2570p(amazing build quality) or x220(similiar to x230 in construction but more robust than x230)

I'd say go with higher res unless you have an external monitor

Is there a difference of durability between your new x220's palmrest vs x230's? I heard that x230's palmrests are prone to breaking over the express card slot. Does this happen with x220's palmrest too?

That's the general opinion here. The thinkpad line according to /tpg/, deteriorates from early ibms to t440p, and then began to improve little by little to current thinkpads(which are still shit). If you are getting a good deal and can justify the upgrade from x220, by all means go for it.

X230 unless you really need the extra working room. The T430s has meh battery life since the main is limited to a 48 Wh. Though you can install an ultrabay battery that tends to lose substantial capacity within a year since the system ends up draining it to 0% before moving onto the main. OTOH the X230's 6 cell is 60 Wh and there's an option for 9 cell

Budget: doesn't matter
Location: Eastern Yurop
Size: Max 14 inch
Performance: Must be able to run (smoothly) VS2017, a test instance of MSSQL Server 2016 with Managment Studio (and some light gayms, but I only play once a week, and it's shit even the D610 could run so I guess those won't be a problem)

Thanks.

>>

Hey m8, answer honestly,
Is the keyboard and trackpoint really shit on 2570p or just mediocre? Keeping in mind I've never used neither a trackpoint nor a thinkpad keyboard before.

Unrelated to this, but they took the website page down for the T440p a while ago. Anyone know how to find the original price of the base laptop and all the options?

It's not shit. Don't listen to butthurt thinfags who say all non-classic-shitpad keyboards are bad. It's decent at least.
The only issue with 2570p trackpoint is that it doesn't have a middle scroll button, but it's not a big deal if you're using windows. You can just use right button for both standard right click function and strolling.
Oh, and the stock black/blue trackpoint rubber is bad. It's advised to remove it immediately and use thinkpad "soft dome" one.

Okay anon, Thanx for the advice/tips.
I'm going with 2570p over t430/x230...hopefully I won't regret it.
>>
>>61202454
It all depends on your needs. My 2570p is rarely used via internal screen. Normally it's always docked to triple 1920x1200 screens via eGPU, so I don't give a fuck about poor viewing angles of internal screen. All I care about is small dimensions, USB 3.0 dock, quad core cpu and lots of storage space options, as it's used as a desktop computer.
But it might be painful if you're going to run multiple VMs on internal screen.
>>
>>61202631
Oh that's fine then, I'm too short on money to buy a replacement screen anyway. Also, I've heard that the stock tn panel on 2570p is better than stock x230, so there's that.
I'm just going to be using it for uni work(computer engineering course) and light gaymen. High Durability is a big plus, especially when I've seen multiple reports of x230/t430's plastic construction wearing out fairly quickly. The only doubt that I had was about the keyboard+trackpoint, which you've answered about already.

Planning on swapping out my i5 for a 4700MQ. Worth swapping the cooler for the DGPU one? Is it even physically possible?

How much does battery life and temps improve from Broadwell to Skylake and Kaby Lake? Jewntel says a lot, but I don't trust them. Haswell and Broadwell thinkpads are getting pretty cheap nowadays, and if the difference is like half an hour and 5ºC I would grab them over Skylake or Kaby

I thought about t430 at first, but it weights almost as much as my current 15 inch laptop, and x230 turns out to be a better deal. Turned out that cracked one already has extended battery (20% wearout though). Probably I'll take that one and replace the palmrest.

Where can I download a recovery CD for my T430?

When i turn my keyboard back light on, one of the keys is yellow rather then white. It's only that key, not the area around it.

Did my t430 have an accident?
>>

cum stain, clean the keyboard

How did cum get on only one key? And of all keys who the fuck would cum on F6, It's a subpar key at best

What's a good laptop that can do light gaming, has an IPS panel, and the best screen?

Preferably under $1.5k and lots of HDD space. Actually, can't I just store anime and manga on an external HDD and connect it to a laptop instead?
>>
>>61210809
Primarily using it to WATCH anime, multitask (20-30 tabs open at once), and READ manga. I want the BEST screen, or a great one at the very least.
>>
>>61210809
>can't I just store anime and manga on an external HDD and connect it to a laptop instead
thats literally impossible
>>
>>61210839
anon, all I want is a laptop with an amazing screen with enough HDD space so I can watch my anime.

do what i do and buy a shit ton of 2.5" hdds, a sata to usb3 cable, and a used surface pro.

How does that compare to the XPS 13/15?

i just use whatever i have lying around
>How does that compare to the XPS 13/15?

Look at the Dell Latitude series. Those are really nice systems as well. You can get one for around 150 with an i5, 4gb mem, 250-320ish hdd,

you can upgrade as you go, but they're tight systems

Why are so many people going for ancient thinkpads? My T61p is a fucking dead horse for just about anything but bare bone basic word processing, and checking email, watching videos are just laggy, and some keyboard keys keep getting harder and harder to hit, thats even after cleaning and lubing the jacks after they're having problems. and thats with an SSD and 8gb DDR2.
