Are good iems actually comfortable? I've always had my ears hurt after about 20min with earbuds, but they've all been sub-$15 shit (and not even the good chinkshit from /csg/, but actual trash).

Because since it's the region that ear is most sensitive to it's the most fatiguing? Aeon actually follows harman curve quite well. I like upper midrange of HD600, it gives amazing clarity and forwardness to vocals. But it can be also very harsh/fatiguing on some songs and I never heard any speaker with such a prominent upper midrange/treble.

You should. Instead of buying something like a 400i in the meantime, I'd put the money towards a better audio source. I highly recommend the NFB-11: http://www.audio-gd.com/Pro/Headphoneamp/NFN1128/NFB1128EN.htm

It's better than a Schiit Modi 2 Uber/Magni 2 Uber stack, but also costs a bit more. It's also nice to have both the amp and DAC inside a single unit. Your K702 will benefit from it, and it's perfect for the HD6XX you'll be receiving eventually. It's good enough for basically any headphone on the market, including stuff like the HD800, so you wouldn't have to worry about upgrading pretty much ever.

Size of the speaker driver isn't the issue when it comes to low frequencies. It is the tuning. If a speaker had a third properly tuned separate housing for a "subwoofer" driver the same size as the woofer, it'd be entirely possible.

Have been looking for an upgrade to my Fiio E10k for a while now. Occasionally lurk MD and found this. From some of the comments I've read the line out on the back of the amp isn't preamped(?) and thus isn't controlled by the volume on the front unlike the schiit combo I was considering. So this might be a direct upgrade for me. Anyone have experience with the topping Dac/Amp combo? Would anyone recommend them as an upgrade?

I have the line out of my e10k running into a receiver which is powering two speakers. Velcro is the shit. I have a piece on the side of my desk to keep my dac up and then I also have a piece on the back of my phone so I can pocket it with the DAC pluggged in more easy.

That model had no detachable cable, so it's not too surprising that'd be what would break. I've never had a cable pull myself, but as I understand it, it's a quite frequent accident among headphone users.

I found a method that has kept me happy for the last 4-ish years.

I bought the Bose soundsport earbuds at best buy for just around 100$, and BOUGHT THE 2 YEAR WARRANTY for an extra 20 bucks. Usually warranties aren't worth it, but in this case it is VERY worth it. For that 20 bucks, I can exchange them for new ones as many times as I need for the 2 years if they become unbalanced, or break. You don't need to pay to reactivate the warranty if you exchange them. at the end of the 2 years, you will need to pay the 20 bucks to keep it going, but realistically, 20 bucks every 2 years for UNLIMITED earbuds of good quality is VERY VERY WORTH IT. I've kept this up for the last 4 years and I cant help wondering how it's not a loophole....

Only if you have super low impedance, super high sensitivity IEMs which are hissy in the Clip+. Clip+ has been measured and is demonstrably transparent with anything but low impedance, high sensitivity IEMs, which it can be hissy with. MicroSD expansion makes its capacity a moot point.
I'd keep the iPod as a backup for when the Clip+ battery dies since Clip+ is discontinued.
