Can someone give me a very good reason to switch to cloverOS from the Debian install I have now? No meme or shitposting answers, actual valid reasons because I've been thinking about switching to Gentoo for a while now but haven't felt like doing it for one reason or another. Also, is there any non-free wi-fi firmware for T510s in the cloverOS repos or somewhere?
>>
>>61170579
- Good performance
- Gentoo is a good distro
- No systemd/pulseaudio
- Easy to build software out of the box. no -dev packages

>this sort of just popped up over night didn't it?

Pretty much. I've been using Gentoo for years and knew about the CloverOS meme, only just decided to do it 3 weeks ago.

>is there a dedicated team for this?

I integrated some input and configuration files I got from others, and there's forks floating around. Check #cloveros on Rizon. The scripts are painfully simple. Anyone can generate their own Gentoo livecd by modifying the script.

>is this viable for daily use and even videogames?

Installing program
emerge filezilla

Upgrading system
emerge --sync
emerge -uavD world

Installing a program when emerge gives an error
emerge -uavD filezilla world
dispatch-conf
emerge -uavD filezilla world

Package isn't available
Make an issue so I can add the package. In the meantime, edit
/etc/portage/make.conf
and edit the following line:
EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS="--keep-going=y --autounmask-write=y --jobs=2 -G"

to
EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS="--keep-going=y --autounmask-write=y --jobs=2"

This disables the binhost and uses Portage's ebuilds for packages.

You could install it to another partition, but I don't know if grub-mkconfig will detect Windows and add it.

If it doesn't, then you'll have to do some googling. If it does, then it's ok.

I might try it right now, because I have a Windows laptop that I'm getting sick of using.
>>
>>61190080
There's also another thing: The installer sets the timeout in
/boot/grub/grub.cfg
to 0, so you'll have to set it to 5 again.
>>
What I did:

Booted liveusb
Manual partitioning
Resized /dev/sda4 to free 20GB
Made 20GB partition at /dev/sda5
Installed to /dev/sda5
Rebooted to livecd, ran grub-install
/dev/sda5

Booted back into Windows

Now I need to get Windows boot loader to boot it.
>>
>>61189998
Did that, no result.
>>
>>61190481
I've made the mistake of installing winxp after installing linux once. It wasn't but so hard to get grub up and running. Getting grub to add windows should be as simple as running update-grub.

>>
>>61211529
As I said, I borrow heavily from the #!, #!++, BunsenLabs, etc bunch. Big fan of Openbox+Tint2 type """DE""".

While I learned about .fehbg for wallpaper and edited my autostart, it'd be nice if
>x11-misc/nitrogen
were in there. Same goes for
>x11-misc/obmenu
. I autistically edited the .xml to my liking, but it could have been easier. I probably could have installed it some other way other than relying on "sudo emerge [package]" but I'm a Deb-babby.

I'm adjusting to emacs, but I swear when I tried earlier today,
>dev-util/geany
wasn't in there. I just added it.

Figuring out wifi was an adventure in and of itself. I realized how dependent I am on little GUI applets.

Dunno why Filezilla is crashing when it would normally prompt me for a certificate. Also, conky 1.10+ is an absolute clusterfuck. I did the lua conversion on my ported-over .conkyrc from my other machine but I can only get it to load in a a tiny font. Neither of the above are CloverOS's fault, I'm just bitching.

Next project is getting it to set the default "y" response (after login) to openbox-session. Took me a bit to figure the difference between choosing "y" and "o" there.
>>
>>61212181
I fixed my LXDE/Openbox setup. messed with the config files until I got it to work properly. Also fixed open arena from crashing by downloading the exe online and replacing damn near all of the files to get it to work. also learned more about portage and how /etc is the most import directory for a lot of shit.
>>
>>61212108
Pretty simple dude. I downloaded the .iso from the OP and used unetbootin from my main machine to put it on a 1GB USB drive. Boot and follow instructions. If you're coming from Windows, Rufus is a good bootable USB maker.

>>
>>61212260
Haven't touched Portage yet, but I'm sure it's in the post. I can see CloverOS/Gentoo being a natural progression from Debian/#!++. This has been a cool experiment and my T60 could easily regain daily driver status. I'm going to keep at it. At the very least I've learned a lot about how to cobble together my own leaner openbox/tint2 system.

I told someone else in the last thread to start with linux mint, as it is the most user friendly, it isn't as bloated as standard ubuntu, and it will get you used to gnu/linux in an environment that reminds you of windows, so it doesn't drag you too far from your comfort zone.

CloverOS is built with CFLAGs that the Gentoo Wiki has stated slows down user systems and hurts performance. The CFLAGs in the OP are actually directly referenced as ricer placebo in the Gentoo Wiki:

https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/GCC_optimization#Optimization_FAQs

You only need
CFLAGS="-march=native -O2 -pipe"
for a correctly configured and responsive Gentoo system.

-Ofast in particular breaks strict standards compliance.

TL;DR - Install Gentoo

Poettering software has extreme feature creep with some packages actually requiring you to use them. CloverOS is an alternative to that, because many other distros don't even give you that option.

Trying to install on a netbook with a LiveUSB, getting an error on boot that there's no OS, despite the newest image being deployed in the standard fashion. Any idea why that might be?
>>
>>61239048
there is a boot partician on the drive correct? double check with a different computer

Does LXDE not work? If I hit l when it asks me if I want to start X then it looks like it tries to install it but then the screen just goes black.
>>
>>61240690
You probably need to install openbox with it. Not sure if the script emerges both together.
>>
>>61240719
So do I just need to reinstall from scratch? Because now even after installing openbox which works I can't get lxde to work.
>>
>>61240756
you may need to, the config files probably need to be reset too. go into twm, launch xfe, find the .config folder by enabling hidden files, delete any folder that says LXDE, then emerge lxde.

Disable UEFI boot

To gracefully fall back if it's not found as binary replace -G with -g

Read https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Binary_package_guide for more information
>>
>>61244153
It doesn't work that way.
>>
>>61244169
> --getbinpkg (-g)
Download the binary package(s) from a remote binary package host. If the binary packages are not found, a regular (source-based) installation will be performed.

That's confusing documentation then, anon
>>
>>61244218
-g makes it so it gets a binary package only if the package has the same USE flags as what the system expects/wants. Someone in an earlier thread made a wrapper script that re-runs emerge if it spat out an error code

I go into the mobo settings and switch BIOS/UEFI to choose Linux/Windows. It's pretty cool, no boot loader bullshit.

Switch your laptop to BIOS, install CloverOS
then switch laptop to UEFI, install Windows

I did that yesterday, works really well.

Will this work on an Asus K501UX?
Every distro I've tried hasnt properly supported the wireless card. Usually have to put the computer to sleep then toggle airplane mode for it to work.
Also the 4k screen makes everything for ants.
>>
>>61245554
KDE would work for high dpi.

As for the wifi card, it sounds like UEFI faggotry. Try installing Ubuntu with UEFI boot enabled and disabled, see if that changes anything.
>>
>>61245715
huh, never considered uefi would be linked to that. I'll give it a shot.
>>
>>61245801
I have to hit the wifi button every time I boot. CloverOS on BIOS here.
>>
Question...

What's the point & purpose of CloverOS?
>>
>>61246341
Being a fast, Poettering-free, lightweight out of the box desktop.
>>
>>61246369
And what's the minimum supported RAM & CPU?

Can this run on an IBM laptop from 2005?
>>
>>61245843
Yeah, I tried toggling wifi by itself, this seems to be a problem specific to my model.
>>
>>61246382
It's fast on my T60 and boots on 64MB ram.
>>
You can control laptop brightness and volume via laptop buttons. Progress.
