It's the opposite. Arch has fewer packages, but they're huge. Debian splits packages so you can install only the parts you need.

I've been using Arch for 2 years now, and I'm honestly considering switching to 'buntu or debian because it Just Werks™. I've never had issues with xorg like other ex-Arch users have reported, but everytime skype, my icon themes, or whatever other application breaks on update and I just hope that the devs don't ditch working on them, I think how much easier it'd be running a commonly-supported linux machine.
