Been thinking about upgrading my S6 to an S7, just because they are so cheap now.

The only thing that would be a downgrade is going from 64GB internal to 32GB internal, with the option to add an SD card though

And the speaker is considerably worse on the s7.

Still the better Camera, battery life, better soc, etc all do seem worth it
>>
>>61136523
If you don't mind Touchwiz then go for it. S6 probably won't be getting Android O but S7 definitely will. S7 also has IP68 water resistance, S6 doesn't.
>>
>>61136558
I actualy like touchwizz, coupled with Nova launcher to get rid of the bullshit, it adds some pretty good stuff.

Split screen multitasking, the calender app is really good and also the browser is the best I've used so far.

>>61136523
I think you should go for it. The upgrade from the s6 to s7 was massive for me. Just make sure to buy the edge; the screen is it's biggest selling feature imo.

>>61136637
My biggest issue with the s8 are the rom sizes, they're 6 fucking gb. Windows 10 by contrast is 3.2gb, stock Android is only a few hundred mb. Bixby malware©®™ somehow added 2 or so gb of bloat.

XZ Premium on Verizon. It should work, right?
>>
>>61136772
Touchwizz with a few minor tweaks and a custom launcher is already buttery smooth and more than fast enough for me on the s6.

On the s7 it will only get better due to the better soc, so I don't care that in benchmarks the pixel might do better to be honest. The Phone offers plenty enough besides good performance to entice me to get it
>>
>>61136772
Drop the pixel in water then see how well it performs that bench.
>>
>>61136796
Water resistance wasn't the issue at discussion at here, it's Touchwiz's shitty performance.

>>61136676
>Of all the current generation high-end phones that I have used (and I’ve used most of them), the Galaxy S8 and S8+ have the worst performance when it comes to scrolling and smoothness of UI. Even though the LG G6 and the Google Pixel have the previous-generation Snapdragon 821processor, they fare better in this regard. Much cheaper phones from Xiaomi have a smoother UI as well.
>>
>>61136796

drop the s8 on anything at all then see... nothing because the screen just shattered
>>
>>61136829
Scrolling and smoothness of ui can all be tweaked with Nova launcher
>>
>>61136849
Nova only changes the home screen and app drawer, everything else is still Touchwiz
>>
>>61136868
Nope, Nova launcher also has settings to tweak animations/animation speed and scrolling
>>
>>61136885
Those only apply for the animations and scrolling on the home screen and app drawer, it even says so in the Nova settings
>>
>>61136910
You're only right about the scrolling part, the app animation and animation speed apply to opening and closing apps or switching between them.

One setting is even called animation speed
>>
>>61136955
>the app animation and animation speed apply to opening and closing apps
Yes, from the home screen or the app drawer, like I said. Doesn't do anything when switching between the apps, try to change the animation and see for yourself. Believe me, the Nova settings apply only for Nova itself, not the whole UI. For that you have to use the developer settings.
>>
Hey /g/, my S7 Edge is working fine and normal except for one thing: there's a notification badge on Google Maps and I absolutely cannot get rid of it. I use Nova Launcher, so I could just hide the badge, but I'm not the sort who sweeps stuff under the rug; I've gotta actually get rid of dust when I'm cleaning the house, so to speak.

Googling has got me nowhere, so I'm turning here. How do I get rid of that badge? How did it even come about? It just showed up yesterday out of the blue.
>>
Should I get international s8+ even though in us?

give it to me straight, ATM I am using a phone with SD 800 SoC, considering how powerful and efficient the 835 is will it be worth it to fork out some 750 eur for a new phone once they start coming out? G7/S9/Oneplus6 etc...

Thats a lot of cash, got my phone for 250 eur in 2014 and forking out so much cash makes my butt clench

>>61137900
Thing is, there's literally no point in spending that stupid amount of money on a flagship smartphone, especially if your butt clenches while thinking about it.

Midrange phones are more than capable of accomplishing everyday tasks. Usually flagships sport good cameras and some gimmick nobody really care about. Thing is, with the money you save from buying a flagship, you can buy an entry level reflex that will make way better photos than any of the flagships.

Any new SoC will be more efficient and powerful than the previous; the question you should ask yourself is "that increase in power and efficiency is going to benefit my everyday user experience in any meaningful way?".

U.S., any network

Samsung Galaxy S7
OnePlus 3/5
LG G3/6
ZTE Axon 7 (Stereo speakers)

Here's what I'm down to. I can largely figure this out from specs, but I want to hear some user feedback:

Do any of these have no bloatware? How about the least bloatware?

Which one would be the best for N64/PSX-level emulation? (Higher is always better, but not necessary.)
>>
>>61138055
No.
>>
>>61138055
Cancer and cancer
Moto G5+
>>
>>61138065
OP and Axon 7 both have near stock ROMs, with almost no bloat, LG's ROM has a skin but it isn't that heavy, not that much bloat either. S7's android skin is furthest from stock and has the most bloat, but also many features that people might consider useful.

Best for emulation would be the OP phones, the ROM is lightweight and well optimized and the resolution is also less (1080p, the others are 1440p). Though any of the phones you mentioned will run N64/PSX perfectly, even way weaker phones will. For something like Dolphin you'll want a SD835.

I'd get a tempered glass screen protector at least (avoid the plastic film ones, they're shit). Cheap phones often don't have proper scratch protection on the display.

A case is up to your own preference. I'd get a cheap one for a few dollars to try and just not use it if you don't like it

No, get a tempered glass screen protector. They feel a ton better and protect against drops better.

Ideally, you should get a thin TPU case too, but I guess that's someone optional. If you have both a tempered glass screen protector and a case, you'll probably be able to sell your phone for a few more bucks in a couple of years.

Euronigger going to china in a week. I need a cheap phone with dual sim and a good camera to take some photo of my holiday (don't want to invest in a real camera).
Is Xiaomi Mi5 ok? Or should I aim for something else? I can go up to 300€
>>

Why? Even a cheap point and shoot will outperform flagship smartphones in most situations
>>
>>61142624
Xiaomi Mi5 / Mi5s
ZUK Z2 Pro
Moto G5 Plus
Sony Xperia XA1 (if you can get the Dual-SIM version)
Honor 8 (might be a bit over budget, it's 299€ in my country)
>>
OP5 or nokia 6? I don't play games but also price doesn't matter

I was looking at the Mi Max earlier so I was about to get hyped there's a new version, but
>snapdragon 625 instead of 652
for what purpose.

Is there going to be a Prime version again with less shitty specs?
>>
>>61142998
Check Techtablets review on the Mi Max 2, he says it's much smoother in use than the original Mi Max, and way better overall. Also the SD625 has superior power efficiency. Only reason to want the SD652 would be for gaming
>>
I think im having slight buyers remorse for my htc u11 is it worth selling it and getting an unlocked 64gb LG G6 i went from the LG G5
>>
Anyone still waiting on their tradein S8 to come in the mail?
>>
I'm thinking of getting a Nexus but I don't know if I should go with 5X or 6? I've read a lot of reviews on both and it feels like some company pays Indians to write bad/good reviews nonstop in horrible broken English and I can't tell if any of these complaints or praises are genuine at all.

I was going to get a Galaxy S6 but apparently its battery is shit, it has a lot of reliability problems, and you can't easily replace it. Apparently you can't buy a real unlocked S6 online either since AT&T has some kind of hidden monopoly on them and fills them with semi-locked shit.

After some studying I started liking more I heard about Nexus 5X, battery life is still a stickler for me though.
How's the Motorola Nexus 6 compared to the LG Nexus 5X?

>>
Seriously is there some kind of company proxy war hiring chinese and poo-in-loos to write bad reviews for shit? Every single phone I see is filled with engrish complaints about how their phones are stuck in bootloops or the battery dies the second they get it.
>>
>>61143360
Definitely not the Nexus 5X. Biggest issue is that it's made by LG so it will BOOT LOOP (same hardware defect as LG G4 and V10), also the Snapdragon 808 was a terrible SoC that overheats and sucks battery. Google also made the stupid decision of only giving it 2GB RAM, it was already a bit low back in 2015 when the phone launched, now it's near obsolete tier.

My girlfriend is looking to move to Android. Her parents aren't rich, but they can afford a decent phone on a per-month at&t plan. What would be the best phone to keep long-term that won't break the bank?

Her only criteria is that it has a good camera. She prefers smaller phones (iPhone 4s).

Custom roms are a bonus (she's not interested, but I might do it for her anyway) but not necessary.

Bought a Redmi Note 4 for $200 on/spg/'s suggestion. Here are some thoughts on it after about a month's use:

Build quality: Everything feels sturdy except the top plastic piece where the headphone jack an IR blaster are. Hear a quiet click when I push down on it. Not a big deal though. Really like the rounded edges of the screen. Feels nice when you swipe from the edge. The phone is a little slippery so either be careful or buy a case.

Performance: I'm running the Resurrection Remix ROM w/ F-Droid, no gapps. Everything is smooth and fast. Apps open and switch just as quickly as friends' flagship phones, but it only cost 1/4 the price. Battery life is amazing. On average, I get 3 days of use on one charge. I pretty much just use WhatsApp, Clover, Lighting (for internet), and F-stop to look at pics. First day I set up the phone, I spent the entire day customizing the thing and only drained half the battery. Camera is great too, but that's my opinion coming from a Nexus 5.

Was originally debating getting a Galaxy Note 4 but I'm glad I didn't. If you get this, make sure its the snapdragon/international version, not the mediatek one as that has no custom ROMs. Unlocking is annoying cause you gotta contact Xiaomi and it can take a couple of hours or days. Took me about 5 hours.

I have an axon 7, just got it the other month. I really like it so far. The stock rom wasn't bad, and after screwing around with it for a little while I was able to tailor it to my liking.
However, I did eventually switch over to Lineage OS. One of the advantages of the axon 7 is that Zte provided a significant amount of support to the los devs, so there are relatively few bugs. (don't know about the opo)

Thank you all for your help - I've decided to go with the OnePlus 3T 128GB.

I'm done fiddling with SD Cards and Emulator saves, I'm not a fan of the checkerboard look of the dual speakers (though I REALLY want Stereo speakers), that strange button placement below the Volume Down button, and my fear that the 1440p on an 820 Snapdragon is going to cause N64/PSX problems (yeah, because I know jacksquat about emulation).

It might be more money, but the OP3/T is well-reviewed, a good first dip into mid-range territory.

>>
>>61149528
Bunch of reasons. One is the google botnet. Even Gboard would constantly use data whenever I typed anything. Removing them seems to double the battery life of a phone, so there's another reason. Been using F-droid for quite some time now and so far, every google alternative I've found seems to have more functionality and a smaller footprint. Last reason was I wanted to declutter to the max. I've removed every app that I could remove. Now my phone is a tool. Its not longer and entertainment/distraction device. I'm texting less and calling more instead. I only use clover when I'm commuting or shitting. I'm happier to use the phone now cause I'm not always on it and I'm a lot more productive with my time. Not constantly getting notifications (no instragram, no snapchat, no facebook. they're all bullshit anyways).

>>61149596
Screen resolution is also higher on the G Note 4. With so many variants though, custom ROMs can be a pain. Whatever you do, don't get the AT&T one. Can't even unlock the bootloader.

So I broke my screen on my OP3 right after they discontinued the OP3 3D glass protector (the only one that wasn't total shit)

Should I use my cracked glass OP3 until the OP5 is out for a while and things get sorted out a bit, or should I get the OP3T for $390ish that comes with an unused 3D glass screen protector?

Is there any reason why people generally don't buy Xiaomi?

Better performance for a cheaper buck.

Am I missing something?
>>
>>61150762
What are you talking about? People do buy xiaomi phones
>>
Do manufacturers get to choose for which devices they will release kernel source or not?

Is kernel source android version specific? Like if a kitkat kernel source is released will it not help in custom rom development for Android L/M/N?
>>
>>61150727
Special mention for their fame or infamy?
>>61150617
I'm using one right now, still doing well. The note 4 is less powerful but more battery efficient as an upside. Maybe the note 5, if xiaomi doesn't make use of their own SoCs, would use the meme dragon 660
>>
>>61150792
Maybe it's a europoor thing then because I don't know of anyone who owns one.

First saw it mentioned on here.
>>
>>61150762
eww no, they're made of chinese stuff
>>
>>61148176
Nah. Easy to find for 160ish.

Will the xaomi redmi note 4x 4gb 64gb work with t-mobile?

I did research and both have gsm and supports 4g lte band 4 at 1.7ghz

I've gotten contradicting claims online so I need to know how well they'll get along.

>>61148283
>>61151040
S5 requires custom rom to root.
>>
I have an S7 Edge, and just got a 128gb iPhone 6 for free. Every logical check I've made says to go with the iPhone.

>better integration with my Macbook
>don't connect my phone to my W10/Arch PC ever anyways
>the few apps I do use on my phone run infinitely better on iOS
>better fingerprint unlock sensor and placement

The one thing I can't get over is how ugly and shitty iOS home and lock screens are compared to my current Nougat home/lock screen. Is jailbreaking iOS 10 enough to get a simple time/date/weather widget and custom icons?

I don't mind the S7 at all, but work and school would be more optimized with the iPhone and it was free so why not?

Looking at what new phone to get, currently have an lg g3 but wanting to upgrade since im missing lte band 12, and the battery is starting to go bad on me again, carrier is tmobile

Features i want are:
Not a downgrade from my G3 in any meaningful way
Band 12 obviously, and wifi calling (probably needs to be tmobile branded)
Rootable
Removable battery strongly preferred
Lcd, not amoled is prefered
Sd slot if less than 64gb internal storage
Lineage os would be nice, but not a deal breaker

Looking at the lg g6 since i can sacrifice battery to gain water resistance (350 slightly used)
Or the lg v20 (290 slightly used)

Anything else i should be looking at? 350 is about my max.

>>
>>61151667

There is also the fact of no sd card slot having to use fucking iTunes to put music on it there are so many negatives it's almost like Apple doesn't want me as a,customer they are certainly doing nothing to gain my loyalty

>>

No phone has an unlocked bootloader out of the box. What you should have asked is *can* it be unlocked.
>>
I got a Galaxy S3 I'd like to make use of.
What's the best way of going about this?
Root and install a more current OS? Or would it just run like shit?
Thoughts?

Honor 8, Moto G5 Plus, Sony XA1 (G5+ and XA1 also have single SIM versions available so make sure it's dual SIM)

I'm looking for a new phone and I was considering the Huawei mate 9.
I noticed that theres no app drawer on their stock ui.
Would installing nova fix this or not?
>>
>>61152220
Sure, installing Nova would have fixed it but it's not a problem anymore, after the Nougat update (EMUI 5.0), there's now an app drawer in the stock UI, you just have to enable it from the settings.

>>61151281

I use maps on my laptop. Now I'm forced to open my eyes and pay attention. Relied on maps so much that it made me stop thinking. I couldn't find anything in NYC, after a year of living there, without maps. It wasn't until I stopped using it all together that I started orienting myself. If you really need a maps app, OsmAnd~ is available on F-Droid. I'm not sure if it has navigation but its decent. I'm not saying everyone needs do things my way but its worked from me. I like not being completely dependent on tech.
