I think I'm going with the 9500's but had some questions on the DT990's:

Am I able to use them solely use the 250ohm solely on my motherboard?

Is the sound as muddy as I've heard several people say?

Also, what do you guys think about the sound on the SHP9500's?

>>
>>51619865
dt770 are fine, especially for that price. just be aware they have a v-shaped sound signature and the 32ohm version is not as good as the 80.
>>
>>51620104
k702 is better
>>
>>51619725
Realtek ALC1150 for example is a motherboard mounted codec which has multiple DACs, ADCs and two headphone amplifiers built in iirc. Amplification is a necessity. It's another thing whether you get a discrete, external headphone amplifier though.
>>
>>51620167
thanks
The 80Ω ones are slightly cheaper than the 32 ones, so I know which ones I'm getting then
>>
I guess I'll ask again, does anyone here know how I'd get my hands on a pair of loose headphone drivers in Europe?
>>
>>51619942
if you can't afford the m40x you should look elsewhere.

>>51619944
the 990 is very v-shaped, with excessive bass and a very severe treble peak. I don't see how people can stand it but taste and all. the 9500 is like a brighter 598. personally I don't think they're worth it unless below $70. you can just buy the 558 and foam mod for not much more, it sounds better and has better comfort.

>>
Just came into my mind while thinking about CSD graphs... If the decay is slow, could it mean there's a problem with the housing and pads more than the transducer itself? For my mind it would make more sense that the energy stored over time in a system would be just waves bouncing back and forth within the earcups in the case of CSD graphs of headphones. Kind of like what happens with loudspeakers in a room where CSD graphs are very useful. Would explain the Anax mods giving a cleaner CSD for HD 800 as it damps the cups pretty well. Am I completely in a wrong here? I'm just having hard time understanding slow decay on all frequencies simultaneously. Resonances are obvious.

I'm going to go ahead and formally request purchase advice per the OP's standard format.

I've lurked /g/ enough. I'm definitely not an audiophile but most of my headphones or buds even if they're cheap, I do still read reviews on before buying.

>$100 or less
>US
>PC or MP3 player - 3.5mm jack, no DAC.
>As compact as an around-ear can be
>Closed preferably but I've never tried an open set so maybe there's something to learn
>Max comfy if possible. Biggest selling point is how good the earpads feel
>Bassy or neutral
>Mostly electronic, dubstep, trance, and some chiptune but I also listen to orchestral
>Logitech G430, Phillips ONeill Stretch, Harman Kardon AE-S, Koss PortaPro, Koss Plugs, Koss UR-20

Is the answer still M40?

In a separate post:
>Logitech G430
Yes: Good bass but also can handle the rest of the range OK, super comfy for long periods, takes earpads from like 4 other models, simulated surround is cool when it works, super durable from my experience, love how the mic folds up and away (not looking for a headset this is just the pair I have on my head most of the time), pretty cheap
No: Simulated surround never works right, driver is fucky, never tried with straight 3.5mm, stock earpads obnoxious color and get dirty fast, sometimes surround is also fucky
>Phillips ONeill Stretch
Yes: Most comfortable phones I've ever worn ever. Loved them. Super nice earpads, really nice leatherette on them, no adjusting, they always just fit, durable, nice cord that never tangled, couldn't hear shit outside my own little world with them on
No: Broke them by trying to show off how stretchy they were, kmfs I wouldn't even be looking for another pair if I still had them, seemed like they could be louder, also why was the disconnect on its own little cord, why didnt the cord just plug directly into the headphones
>Harman Kardon AE-S
Yes: Literally like 3 dollars with my phone, sound pretty good, these are my go-to earbuds, no complaints
No: Nothing that blows me away to be honest for what they are actually priced at in the real world if you don't get them for basically free, always fucking falling out. Literally cannot get them to stay in my ears.
>Koss PortaPro
Yes: Love the 80's looks, tried and true, been around forever, sound pretty great, portable. Wouldn't be looking for another set if not for the cons
No: Get uncomfortable on my ears and top of head sometimes after long periods, feel a bit flimsy, wish they were around-ears too but I get it you can't have a pair of around ears and call them "PortaPro"
>Koss Plugs
Yes: Cheap as fuark like 15 bucks, comfy as hell, block out everything
No: Sound OK at best
>Koss UR-20
Yes: Cheap
No: Obviously cheap.

Everything about this is wrong.

-In "Design Criteria for Headphones", Moller et.al measured human subjects at the ear entrance and not at the simulated eardrum, which is what Etymotic and most measurement websites do.
-STAX is not equalized to free field, both Theile and Moller have observed Lambdas were closer to diffuse field response. Theile even used this to suggest that a diffuse field response was better than a free field target, since so many of the "better" headphones were closer to a diffuse field response already.
-The STAX coupler is not a proper ear simulator, extremely frequency limited since it barely attempts a proper ear simulation. It is there for spec compliance, much like the 2cc measurements that come with some IEMs that aren't even remotely accurate. You can do the same, maybe better with a block of wood, some foam, and some 1/2 inch microphones.
-Headphones do not avoid the frequency interaction of the pinna, but do not introduce acoustic crosstalk, nor add room reflections like a loudspeaker in a room.

The DT 770's are $150 on amazon and are quite comfortable.

How much have the headphone technology actually increased?

I have hda both Sennheiser hd 555 and 595 for a loong time now, I'm wondering are there currently much better headphones on the market at the same price range 150-400usd?

like bayern dynamics, akgs ? I dont see that much sennheisers at the stores anymore, are they even making phone anymore?

Pretty comfortable, especially since I wear glasses. I found the mdrv6 to be very comfortable.
>Tonal balance/Music
I dont really know, I assume balanced. I listen to mostly alt rock, some electronic, some hardcore. Also a lot of video games and/or tv shows.
>Past headphones
MDR v6 - Comfortable, good sound, very durable. The coiled cord and foldability is nice but not a requirement. I do have a cord extender so length isnt a huge issue either.
Before that was a shitty headset+mic.

Thanks in advance.

>If the decay is slow, could it mean there's a problem with the housing and pads more than the transducer itself
A resonator is just any system that stores periodic signals, "slowing" decay. The driver itself can fail to couple to air well enough, not have enough internal damping to control treble breakup.
We are going to define slow by a high-Q resonator, since the higher Q means that the motion of a resonator is least lossy (friction): the energy to persists in the system for greater number of cycles, and the peak will be stronger.
The most narrow are the modes that are near totally undamped, usually a hard dome breaking up without any losses to restrain it. These are more mid-Q resonators, as would appear to be the case with HD 800.
>Kind of like what happens with loudspeakers in a room where CSD graphs are very useful.
It is really of very limited use, the resolution is bad in both time and frequency in bass. This is a stumbling block everyone must deal with, and there are alternate visualizations and methods to get around it. Directivity plot shows the alternate issue of resonances in magnitude response off-axis, the ones that don't go away with EQ. There are other visualizations, but I'm not sure if anyone uses them properly. The biggest and most common mistake is not to normalize the magnitude response, a typical failing of waterfall charts and other methods that show time/magnitude/frequency.
>Would explain the Anax mods giving a cleaner CSD for HD 800 as it damps the cups pretty well. Am I completely in a wrong here? I'm just having hard time understanding slow decay on all frequencies simultaneously?
EQ would help the CSD as part of your problem is the EQ itself of HD800 driver, and phase of acoustic modes only stray so far from standard EQ. But you are looking to fix acoustic problems, with a different phase nature from the typical end user EQ. The goal of the Anax mods is to attack some flaws that the housing was purported to cause.

Schiit stack or o2odac for hd650? When I eventually have money I'll get a crack + speedball but until that its one or the other.

650's cause I got them cheaper than I could get 600's, not a fan of the warmness but with a bit of EQ tweaking I got it to a point where its still comfortable but not murky.

Wasn't aware crack or tubes was a meme, seemed to me as it actually is good for its price. I have not looked much into tubes since they kinda outside my budget atm anyway.

And with the warmness of 650 I enjoy the signature but i find the low-mid bass too high and drowning, its just a bit too much for my taste.

>>
>>51623788
If you're unironically considering buying tube amps, nothing is snake oil for you.

But no, mods like that show measurable differences in FR.

Those mods affect FR, but you have an EQ. They don't do much about the midbass that I've seen.

>>51623839
Crack will have measurable and potentially audible differences. Doesn't mean it will be liked, Crack skews more midbass on the 650.

M50 is more bassy than the DT770s. The whole fr is tilted towards bass on the M50 and the DT770 is V-shaped. They have bass and treble and quite a lot of both. They balance each other out in the overall response unlike with M50s.
>>
>>51627863
>M50 is more bassy than the DT770s
That's wrong, I literally spent hours comparing different M50 and DT770 measurements when I was deciding what headphone to buy.
I wanted the headphone with the most bass and the deepest sub-bass.
I decided on the DT770 because it's exactly that.
Not to mention it being MUCH more comfortable.

>>
>>51627878
What's the difference between the ohm counts on the DT770s anyway?
>>
>>51627878
Sure is comfortable, especially compared to M50, but to my ears the bass on the M50s was just overwhelmingly boomy because of the recessed upper midrange and treble vs elevated bass. Warm tilt vs V-shape. I tried DT770 250 Ohm vs M50X.
>>
>>51627965
The M50 has more midbass than the DT770, the 770 is sub-bass oriented, just look at the graphs.
lots of sub bass is great, but lots of normal bass is fucking terrible, just turns to muddy trash.
>>
>>51627960
32 ohm has some weird shit going on in the bass, I'd stay away from those.
80 ohm is idea IMO, still some weirdness in the bass going on but it's far less than the 32 and it does not need an amp.
250 will probably need an amp but trial and error is all that can really say.

Yeah I was looking into that, but like I said I'm tight on money. Plus I'm very ignorant when it comes to headphones.
The ones that caught my attention was the Sennheiser CX 300 and the Sennheiser CX 200.

Is there a huge noticeable difference? What throws me off is that the 200 has a larger frequency response(20-20000Hz) than the 300(42-17000Hz).
Like I said, I'm very ignorant when it comes to headphones.
>>
>>51628318
The sound quality will be worse than both of your headphones. But if you're that tight, take CX 300. I don't know your budget and your preferences.

Spec frequency responses usually didn't matter much, especially above 16Khz you won't hear the sound in music. You can feel it though.

The CX300 is more expensive. So it threw me off that it was more expensive but had a lower frequency.

After doing some research in their website, apparently the 300 has a frequency of 19-21000Hz. Amazon had the wrong frequency listed for it...
So I'll just go with the 300

the problem with the 880 and most beyerdynamic is they all have a treble peak, which many find fatiguing. also the 880 doesn't have the bass boost of the 770 or 990 so the perception is that they are bright sounding (emphasis in high frequencies). the peak on the 880 is not as bad as the 990 but it's still well above the bass. still, it is the most balanced of the "main" beyerdynamics.

I'm asking because I got an HD600 coming on the way and I bought it over a K7XX. Didn't seem like I should get both since online comments suggested both are fairly balanced/neutral.
>>
>>51628455
Don't take my word but I thing it is more natural sounding. Compared to most consumer headphones that are for that wub wub wub shit.

A "warm" sound is generally considered the opposite of a "cold, analytical" sound. "warm" doesn't necessarily equate to "neutral, flat", it just means that the sound is pleasant, soft and it generally doesn't fatigue the ears, usually because it stands for enhanced lower frequencies, whereas "analytical" sound stands for enhanced higher frequencies. Also, please stop with the "bassy headphone = bad headphone" meme, because it's often really far from reality.

great headphones but if you've only ever listened to bassy and v-shaped closed stuff you're going to be in for a surprise. there have already been several people coming into hpg complaining (though they didn't use the term) that it was less colored than m50.
>>
Anyone tried Bluedio T2 or similar? From what I've researched they're quite good and cheap.
>>
>>51626253
there is none. if you have so much money you might as well buy all the top-tier stuff that isn't an audiophile meme like abyss. so that would probably be he1000, ether, sr009/007, lcd4, pm1, hd800, stuff like that.

no. most sennheiser IEMs are not very good. you'll probably end up with something worth less than $25. grab bags are gambling where most of the time you wasted your money.

>>51627758
samson sr850, hd681/evo, portapro/sportapro/ksc75, th-02. hell even some IEMs. just don't buy bottom-tier sennheiser, they're crap.

>>51628455
slight, broad emphasis in the bass into the mids, with the peak usually at the lower mids or below. usually combined with treble roll-off after 2k. warm headphone usually do not have the bassy character that comes with a more defined bass hump, and they don't have as much impact in the bass.

>>
>my pleb blog

I have the superlux hd330 and a pair od e10s and really, really like them(especially if you upgrade from a 10 euros philips). Recently I bought the lsr305 because x530 are not the best for listening music.
I was quite excited about them until i plugged the jack. After listening them for a few days all I can say is that I'm not impressed. I can't understand the praise I've been reading, for weeks before I made the decision to buy them, on forums(where the fuck is that soundatage?). On top of that my ears start to hurt if i listen to them for prolonged periods of time.
I plug them straight into my pc(alc1150) and there's an unbearable interference if I set the volume knob on maximum when playing vidya, but that's not so important.
Do I have to blow away another 250 euros on a dac to make them perform. Also I'm planning on making or buying stands because they are a bit too close. What about buying a dedicated sound card like auzentech prelude?

Are there any cheap headphone+speaker amp all-in-one solutions that have low enough output impedance to drive my K701s and 250ohm beyerdynamic headphones? Would be nice if it measured nicely too and generally wasn't a piece of shit electronic.

Nice in ear. Great for the price, have nice bass. Only downside, after a while (1 hour about) I have to wear off because my ears hurts a little (not because of the sound). But it could be me, I'm not a lot into in ear.
