Get a used laptop, /g/ approved brand would be the Dell Latitude, XPS and Precision, HP Elitebook and IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad (series X,W or T)

I have 600mb memory usage under my normal workload running awesome, Firefox, a few other things (mostly terminal programs). I imagine you can get close to 300mb usage on a 32bit Linux. 2G of ram should be fine unless you are anal about fancy effects.
