Is the HD 7950 still a good GPU?
I'm thinking about getting one used.
>>
>>51613094
Depends on your expectations to be honest family. It's about as fast as a 960, but the 960 is shit.
>>
>>51613094
Get two.
>>
>>51613129
My LGA 1150 motherboard only has 1 pcie 3.0 x16 slot
>>
>>51613145
So? pci-e 2.0 8x is sufficient.
Then bios flash them to 1GHZ.
>>
>>51613112
Yea I get the feels, I'm not expecting 980ti performence.
But for the price its better than a 750ti
>>
>>51613161
What the fuck are you saying f a m?
>>51613112
I honestly think the 960 is good for 1080p
>>
>>51613094
Yes it's still a fine gpu. There are many people who are still using the ones they bought on release..

It's a bit faster than the 960, and since they are so cheap you really should crossfire them.

Although that being said, it depends a lot on what resolution you play. I buy all my gpu's used, and you can get a 290 for the same price as two 7950's. A reference 290 goes for around 170-200 and a non reference will go to around 220.

If dx12 ever does take off then the gcn 1 and 1.1 architectures may never die... and if it doesn't take off, well then the cards will still last a good while.
>>
I would be very careful about buying used amd gpus, poor thing spent most of its life mining BTC or some alternative coin.

If the seller said never mined on then it was 100% used for mining
>>
>>51613200
I'm saying you don't need 16 lanes of pci-e 3.0 to run a second gpu. I'm guessing you have a poxy m-ITX mobo then.
>>
>>51613211
Good. I would crossfire but I have a MATX board and only have 1 slot.
>>
>>51613246
OK, then what price is the 7950, what are you upgrading from and what are you hoping to achieve from it?
>>
I'm not upgrading its a new build im doing. Im gonna be taking over to other people's places, and using it to play on my TV. They are around 100 bucks or so
>>
>>51613278
>>51613294
Sorry forgot to quote
>>
>>51613294
100 dollars is a pretty solid price. I've seen them go for 10 bucks or so cheaper, but this is still good.

I'd say go for it OP. The 7950/70 have been budget workhorses for a long long time and unless something momentous happens with the next gen then I don't think this will change anytime soon. Just keep in mind that these are 1080p cards, and with just one you aren't going to be able to max out every game.

Expect medium-high settings regularly with a few games running excellently on ultra (elite dangerous for example.) Also this is dependent upon your cpu and other components, so just keep all that in mind.
>>
>>51613228
Yep I need to be careful. Like as soon as I get stress test it and shit maybe even do a little OC
>>51613231
Sorry m8. Pic related is my mobo

Good to know m8 :^) I appreciate the help a lot, Thanks. Still contemplating selling the motherboard or something, so that I can do a crossfire config, but ehh I might just stay like this for a while. (probably not gonna sell it lol)
>>
>>51613391
What are some of your temps, fps, power draw and psu?
>>
>>51613361
lol, nevermind mate. As posted above, a single 7950 at 1080p for DX 9/10 will do fine, only the latest DX11 stuff giving it a run for it's money.

Also, I'm gonna be playing at 1360 x 768 most of the time. For some reason, even though my TV is 1080p it won't put the picture properly. But I'll do 1080p sometimes

7950 /7970 turned out to be great cards. Frankly that whole Gen was.
>7850 2gb @ launch
>itching to upgrade to 7970 a year later
>290 series just around the corner. Wait.
> contrast to the previous Gen, they turn out to be high energy furnaces.
>damn.. Wait for 3xx series. Same thing happens.
>my as well wait for a 4k 60fps capable card.

My 7850 still handles most games just fine though thankfully but it is aging. Paid itself off in some ltc and dogecoin mining when it was easy. That anon was right that if you buy used from that Gen expect it to have been mined on.
>>
>>51614140

fellow doge miner reporting in
doge was pretty good if you got in the first week it was out like I did, but potcoin was the real sleeper hit

some people were really expecting potcoin to be THE marijuana currency so one could sell one night's worth of mining with a 7950 for $50 worth of btc
>>
>>51614140
Is it still worth it?
>>
>>51616071

nah, crypto mining is dead for now
>>
>>51613211
You sound knowledgeable anon, I'm running two hd7950's the powercolour edition. Both cards are being picked up by the pc and also monitoring software but when I go into the catalyst centre it won't let me enable both card use because "the connector between the two bridges needs to be connected".

I've tried to put the cable the other way and on the other crossfire slot but same problem.

Do you think it's the cable that's bust cause I bought them second hand or do I have to enable it in the bios or somewhere else first?
>>
>>51614140
I'm in the same boat with a 1 gb 7850. It runs everything I throw at it. I will end up keeping it until next year when I build a new rig with Zen and 4xx gpu
>>
>>51615868
Ltc a little later I hopped on and mined 4 (sold @ $50 when it hit near its peak).
Dogecoin I had 60k worth and traded in for btc. Btc prices dropped soon after though. Once were 1200$ at its peak and now like $300. I haven't followed prices much lately but visit my wallet every once in a while to keep it alive.
>>51616071
Although I don't follow it anymore I have the feeling the gold rush is way over.
>>
>>51616431
Anon here. It could be the crossfire bridge, it wouldn't hurt to try another one. Few ideas:

Are both pcie2.0 slots the same speed? Make sure they are at least both 8x.

On the 7950 there is a small little switch near the crossfire bridge that changes the bios. Not sure if this makes a difference, but make sure both switches are in the same position.

I don't think modern mobos would require you to config anything, but you might have something obscure and difficult. It might also be worth it to update your chipset drivers which you can find off the drivers page for your mobo usually, though I don't think that's it either.

Another thing I just remembered - It might be worth it to cycle both cards by themselves. Run each card by itself in the top pcie slot so that the computer recognizes each of them in turn, and then try running them in crossfire and see if it detects.

GPU-Z is probably better than Catalyst in troubleshooting. It's easy to see if they are both connected but have crossfire disabled, or if something else is going on.
>>
>>51616472
I get a near 40% overclock on it too. Beast. Like I said that whole Gen was great in all fields -performance/tdw/$$$ and godly oc capability.
>>
>>51616648
Thanks so much anonbro, going to try that out now and also download the gpu-Z and test it. Will report in a bit later

Thank you
>>
>>51616375
No the GPU lol
>>
Btw guy's im talking about the 3gb HD 7950
>>
>>51617160

The 7950/280 only came in 3gb. There are however some rare as fuck 6gb 7970/280x models.
>>
>>51617710
I read someone say something about a 1gb model. Also, wow didn't know about the 6gb models, are they any good? Probably expensive asf
>>
>>51613112
>but the 960 is shit.

What the hell do you run that makes you think 960 is shit?
>>
>>51617840
This. It's a great card. Runs 1080p perfectly
>>
>>51617826

There are no 1gb models of any tahiti card unless we sorta-count tahiti LE, but that was what made it into ceretain versions of the 7870 iirc. As for 6gb? Not worth it even if you could source one.
>>
get one
it's really great.
On beamng.drive, i usually get 50-55 FPS everywhere (i7 3770 and 7950 Vapor X), in ultra settings 1080p.
>>
>>51618146

Beamng is primarily cpu bound.
>>
>>51617840
>>51617865
For the price it's absolute garbage. You get similar performance out of a 280x for half the price. For the price of a 960 you can get a new 380x (full tonga) or a used 290.

Not to mention 128/b memory bus....
>>
>>51618496
>You get similar performance out of a 280x for half the price

In what reality?

>you can get a new 380x (full tonga) or a used 290.
>amd

Last thing I need is my gpu fan to forget to turn on :^)

For it's price range it's a decent choice, all thought nothing to write home about it will get the job done without dying in the process.

And bitching that a mid range card isn't good for 3 screen 4k gaming is retarded.
>>
>>51613094

>>
>>51618625
>In what reality?

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1495?vs=1596

It's absolutely terrible considering how much they charge for it. A 380x is around 15% worse than a 290 for the same price as a 960, there is no contest here.

>Last thing I need is my gpu fan to forget to turn on :^)
>amd

This isn't even about brand wars. Also, non-reference 290's are really really solid cards.

The only reason this "mid range" card gets compared to better cards is because nvidia priced it as such. If this card were 150 bucks or cheaper then no one would be questioning its value.
>>
>>51618738
Forgot to mention - even reference 290's aren't THAT bad. With a custom fan curve the cards wont throttle and you can get a decent OC out of them, you'll just go deaf.

>>51618731

Does a 290x justify it over a 290x? Fury to fury x? etc etc. Price vs performance metrics say no as that scale massively favours lower end cards. At the end of the day if you want the faster card pay more.

>>51618761

Or you buy a reference 290 and replace the cooler as the reference pcb is built to withstand a nuclear blast.
>>
>>51618761
>you'll just go deaf.

Kids, never go with reference cards, those 10 dollars don't seem much when you're shouting to be heard over the gpu fan.
>>
>>51618738
I had far too many bad experiences with amd to ever buy them again.

Nvidia might be jews, but at least the stuff works as intended.

I'm willing to take a performance drop to have an usable gpu.
>>
>>51618791
I ran two reference cards in crossfire. Surprisingly I was able to get a decent OC out of them. I think it was 1100/1500 with my max temp being around 83c. Though I felt like my computer was taking off every time I started up a game. Pretty cool desu.
>>
>>51618814

>but at least the stuff works as intended.

Until they nuke your card with a driver update. Nvidia got so good at it it happend not once, but twice!

Word.
>>51618814
I don't really get this argument. I've had my fair share of both AMD and Nvidia cards.

Nvidia cards rely on super optimized drivers and underhanded business tactics to get good benchmark scores and an overall short-term lead.

AMD however usually embraces newer technologies and creates larger more powerful chips. There's a reason that this thread was started to talk about the 7950, and that's because it still works.

There's also a reason we aren't talking about the 680, the 7950/70's direct competition right now.
>>
>>51618943

The 680 and 770 have vanished into the aether as they slam into the 2gb wall and die. It was fun listening to anon claiming "2gb is all you'll ever neeed for 1080p".
>>
>>51618943
I had equal amounts of amd and nvidia cards, and I ALWAYS had issues with amd cards, I had 3 amd cards dying on me, while only 1 nvidia card die after 3 years of overclocked torture.

Every amd card I had caused blue screens, from factory issues to shit drivers.

Performance was all over the place, while they could bruteforce some games better, vast majority of time it was choke full of visual bugs. Doesn't matter if I get 5 fps more with an AMD card when the fucking game looks half broken.

Somewhere along the way I just got tired of this shit.
>>
>>51619060
The only card I've ever had problems with was my old 4850.

Since then I've run a 280x, 2x7950s, 2x290s (reference), 2x290's (gigabyte windforce), and two separate 295x2's, and I haven't had any of the terrible bugs that people seem to talk about.

I think a lot of it has to do with shitty psu's as well as budget motherboards and overall shitty systems. While I'm not saying that you necessarily had those, I don't think your experiences are representative of the larger picture.

I used to run a from-home used/refurb computer part business so I got to try out lots of different configurations of hardware and whatnot.
>>
>>51618709
Plenty of people were mentioning Crossfire 7950s, a 7990 is around the same price whilst being essentially two 7970s on one card.
>>
>>51619232

Problem with the 7990 cooler is its not known for its low audio profile. There is a reason why the only good dual gupu ever is the 295x2.

Still a very solid gpu.
My friend has one, gets about 55 fps average battlefield 4 1080p, last time I checked.
For the same price as a 750 ti I highly recommend it.

I had a 6600GT, which died during CoD2.
Then I got a 8600GT, which also died, during CoD WaW.
I rebaked both of them, they held together a month or so before dying 100%.

Then I got a HD4830, which works fine today even. It lacked punch so I got a HD7850, which was neat. I also got an R9 390, which is also neat.

AMD never failed on me.

6 cores at 4.6ghz.

That is so stupid it makes my head hurt.
>>
>>51619925
Why?
If it's about to die better find out sooner so he can get his money back?
>>
>>51619955

Furmark is nothing more than a heat test - it WILL damage cards if you don't know what you are doing. In fact it is so bad Nvidia and AMD both explicitly write their drivers to throttle when they detect furmark running (which furmark keeps trying to get around). Nvidia throttles more aggressively than AMD does but still, furmark is so far beyond a reasonable load it is best described as a power virus.

Something like unigine valley is a far better option.
>>
>>51619815
The 750ti is great and this is coming from an AMD fanboy.
>>
>>51620274

It is a great card for many reasons but tends to be overpriced for the performance.

I sold both my 7850s for $85 and picked up a nice used one for $90. Works great, better than the 7850s in CF. It'll definitely last me at least 2-3 more years.
