US boy here, thinking about getting a Galaxy S6(primarily for Gear VR). Is the Note 5 that much better? I'm not sure how much use I'd get out of the S Pen, or whether or not that justifies the expense, but I'm not too worried about the extra money if it does.

Also, does anyone know of any lightweight custom roms for these as well? I've heard that the stock touchwiz is pretty bloated.

I'm ordering through T-Mobile. does it says that the total price of the phone is discounted by 100 dollars. Does anyone know if that's a permanent price drop or if it's just a black friday thing that'll be over tonight?
>>
>>51604691
Note5 is apparently better for VR, there is a slightly larger FOV, the S6 feels a bit more cramped. If you really are set on the GearVR i'd at least take a look at the note.

As for the price drop, it might only be for blackfriday/cybermonday. But I wouldnt be shocked to see deals on it before christmas and after christmas as well because the S7 is coming only ~2 months after that.

As for light weight roms, you really probably just want to debloat the stock rom instead, there should be debloating guids on XDA.

The nexus 5 is a good phone thatsm still holds up even today. The only problem with it is the mediorcre battery and camera.

Id suggest looking into the new moto g or if you can afford it, the moto x.

>>51604390
Don't get it.
The moto x is probably better and or if you can, get the nexus 6p

Rec guy here, cheers for the interest.
The problem I'm having is that the low-end stuff tends to be truly terrible or tries to be better than it is. Either option leads to poor value for money. I guess I'm just looking for a phone that isn't expected to do to much but can do the things it does (music, basic apps, internet) well.

I'm thinking the fx0 so long as Aussie simcards are supported. If I throw in some extra storage it should go all right.

Looking to upgrade from a Nokia Lumia 928, on the Verizon network, so the new Lumias coming out aren't an option, plus I'm looking to move away from Window's phone.

I've been looking at the LG v10 vs. Nexus 6P.

Camera is one of the most important things to me, I do use it a lot for work.

V10 looks good, always nice to have an SD slot and the camera seems decent.

6P looks good as well, camera from what I've read is excellent, plus not having crap preloaded on from the carrier or manufacturer sounds nice.

What does /g/ think?

From people who have upgraded from a smaller phone like the 928 to a larger phone, how was it for y'all?
>>

If you are on budget, is the Moto X pure more bang for your buck?
>>
>>51607913
If you can afford it yew. It's basically a 2015 flagship. The only reason I don't own one is because it's ridiculously expensive in EU, this shit is almost 1,5x as expensive as LG G4.
>>
>>51607913
Not really than a Xiaomi (mi4c, note 2/3), OnePlus (1,X,2), or other Chinese phones.

If you're in the USA, be advised the USA has no global bands, the Xiaomi's 4g networking on TDD-/FDD-LTE won't work. EU and elsewhere will usually be fine.

Want to buy a Moto X Force here in Europe, also called Droid Turbo 2 in murica.

Looks like it's going to go out for around 550 euros. Should I do it? I have no need for higher ends phones, but this one looks cool as the display never shatters, so I can use it for years without problem.

My current phone is a Galaxy S3, but it's already showing its age.

Don't have a good overview. These two come to mind:

Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 (if you're not in the USA).
LG G4

If the deal isn't good enough get a recent OnePlus or Xiaomi or something. ~$170-300 with the upper end of that ending up like the Moto X Style (Mi4C is almost an exact pendant in most key specs).
>>
>>51608878
At the end of the month or so, yes.

But they changed things around. it hasn't got a microSD slot and removable battery anymore. It now has a metal back and fingerprint scanner and more RAM instead (when comparing the better variants of the Note 2 and 3 each).
>>
>>51608862
>Redmi Note 2
it looks as though this'll work in my country, and it's only 200 dollarydoos so i'll go with that

i'm coming from a HTC m7 that reports having 20% battery when it's actually dead
>>
>>51608987
Should be $160-170 (Gearbest, Geekbuying, ...) for the better edition.

But yep, I think it'll be fine. Also ordered that one for myself. Even has a PDAF camera (though not the very best, it's decent).
>>
>>51608987
> i'm coming from a HTC m7 that reports having 20% battery when it's actually dead
That's kinda normal when plugged in with a dead battery and voltage-based battery status (as is usual).

Dead will be just dead, though. And it happens to pretty much all Li-ion packs in 8 years or less.
>>
>>51608922
Most chinese brands don't support lte band 20 which is why i'm hesitant about buying one.

Would you recommend a OnePlusX 16gb for 270€ or OnePlus2 64GB(16gb is out of stock) for 400€ over the Nexus 6?
>>
Just bought the Nexus 5x 32gb (along with a case and a USB C adapter) for 388 including taxes. I don't do anything other than 4chan and social media on my phone, so I should be okay right? P-please tell me I made a good choice.
>>
>>51609094
> Most chinese brands don't support lte band 20 which is why i'm hesitant about buying one.
Sure. They don't. Do you need it? Most countries / providers in Europe have 3 and 7 anyways, and even that is just for LTE data.

> Would you recommend a OnePlusX 16gb for 270€ or OnePlus2 64GB for 400€
You decide. The OnePlus X is ~ equivalent to a Nexus 6 (a bit lighter, a bit slower, much better front amera - but really somewhat the same), the OnePlus 2 is better.

> I don't do anything other than 4chan and social media on my phone, so I should be okay right?
You could easily have made do with a Redmi 2 2GB for $100-120 or so then. Of course you'll be fine.
>>
>>51609223
I'm American, so the Xiaomi stuff is kind of a hassle to own right?

i'm on gearbest, is this version the better edition?
http://www.gearbest.com/cell-phones/pp_229217.html
its $146 USD = $206 AUD
>>
>>51609245
Yes, in terms of 4G networking it's a hassle.

The USA does not have *any* of the global FDD-LTE bands which the Xiaomi supports almost comprehensively.

Out the global bands 1, 3, 7, 28 (FDD-LTE) or 38, 40 (TDD-LTE), only 28 is missing on newer models. But you just have none of them (or any of the extra bands that it also has).

Not much you can do until Xiaomi makes an US-adapted phone in terms of LTE. If you don't need 4G / LTE, there should be no problem, though.
>>
>>51609307
No. That's the 16GB version. Slightly lower clocked Helio X10 (not sure anyone will care much about that, though - the difference isn't huge) but 16GB rather than 32GB storage.

The 32GB edition is the better one. Like, here:
http://www.gearbest.com/cell-phones/pp_229219.html
>>
Just beware, the Redmi note 2 is known to have battery life issues.
The Redmi note 3 is exactly the same (in terms of hardware) as the note 2, with the exception of bumping the battery size up by 1000mah (4000mah) and removing the MicroSD card slot.

Now, certainly, if you pay more for a more miniaturized SoC and stuff, it can also look like this. Neat, but paying over twice the price for such a phone is maybe not worth it.

Well, it isn't to me, anyways.

You could carry a second battery, or do what I actually do: Use a $12 10Ah (rated at 3.6V, also Xiaomi) USB battery pack for longer trips on foot. It has two extra charges (effective 6250mAh rated at 5.1V).

Redmi Note 2 is mostly the same (minus fingerprint reader and 1GB extra RAM) but with a removable battery.

Also, more general -apart from my brand / value / ROM choices- the point might be that you can use almost any halfway decent phone for this.

Almost everything 2015 has 20k+ on Antutu. (most are far above it, the OnePlus X is at ~38k, the Redmi Note 2 is at 45-50k, a S6 or OnePlus is at like ~62k, and a 6P has ~85k. All completely overkill for glorified HTML browsing, but at least some of them are cheap.)

Okay, I've got a question.

Basically, I'm on T-Mobile, and I want to get out. I've returned my phone, but the EIP balance is still on my account. I've called customer service and I've been assured that I'll get a reply within a week. The thing is, there's a deal on a phone I want with activation on the carrier I want to move to today.

If possible, I want to transfer my number, but I assume that would close the T-Mobile account and immediately charge me for the remaining EIP balance that shouldn't be there.

Would it be possible to order the phone now and then just not use it until I get the balance removed from my account? Would that avoid any issues?

I saw there are some AOSP and I think now Cyanogenmod derivative ROMs, as well as MIUI derivatives.

But I clearly prefer MIUI. As relatively fat as it may be, it has really quite extensive settings and well-designed stock apps, as far as I'm concerned. So I haven't even tried them on the Note 2 yet.
>>
>>51611192
If you need to sign up for service in order to get the good deal, you could probably do it by using a new number. I dont think you'll be able to get the phone on sale without either getting a new number or bringing your old one over today. If the old one is locked out for a few more days, you'll just have to wait or get a new number.

>>
How's the battery life on the Note 5
>>
>>51611240
Alright, thank you. I'll probably just get the phone with a new number, then transfer my current number to another account on the same carrier, then I'll just move my phone to that account. It's an inconvenience, but it seems to be allowed according to their website. It's worth the trouble, considering how much of a discount I'm getting on the phone if I order it soon.
>>
>>51611368
Its breddy gud senpai. 4-5 hour screen on time.

With my average use I get a day and a half of battery, i could see a power user going through it in a day though.

Good thing about the note5 is the fast charging though. Plug it in and within 15-20 minutes you have enough battery to last several hours.

Basically I want a decent smartphone with nfc, lte, a micro sd slot and sufficient software support (2 years, maybe?) Price range: 200 - 300€

Does somebody have some suggestions?
Is that possible or should I lower my expectations/enlarge my budget?
>>
>>51612403
depends what you want it to do.
More RAM will allow more apps open without reloading, and more tabs in the web browser open.

But a slower CPU means applications will run slower, and in 2 years there may be applications your CPU can't handle.

A more powerful CPU will be able to handle those more intensive apps, but with the less RAM, will need to reload apps more often because it just doens't have the extra RAM.

It's a fully glass phone sealed watertight. AKA it will literally fucking crack itself from overheating. Two of my friends own a Z3 and both have had their phones crack on them overnight. One of them literally has the display coming off the body so he has to use a case to keep it together.

Not to mention 0 warranty support in the US for the good phones they have like the Z5. And they're fucking expensive for what they are.

Fuck off, you've obviously never used an S6 or Note5, which are fantastic on 5.1.1 and are getting 6.0 in Dec for the Note5 and january/feb for the S6.

Note5 has Exynos 7420 which is a 14nm 8 core (4x A53 & 4x A57), and Mali T760MP8 GPU which is basically the only GPU powerful enough at the moment for QHD res screens besides the adreno 430 in the SD810.

V10 has SD808, which is a 20nm 6 core (4x A53 2x A57), and Adreno 418, which is not really meant for QHD res and is more suited for 1080p res screens and gaming.

Note5 has 4GB LPDDR4 RAM

V10 has 4GB RAM, but it's still the older, slower, and higher power LPDDR3.

Note5 has USF 2.0 internal memory

V10 has older, slower eMMC internal memory

Note5 has a digitizer which is far more advanced then an after market stylus you could get for the V10, it makes drawing, taking notes, and gaming super easy because it's so accurate.

Both of their cameras are about the same.

Note5 AMOLED display is the best display tested by Displaymate

V10 display is a great LCD display, but still can't compete with the top tier AMOLED in the note5.

basically, the V10 is a fine phone, it has removable battery and mSD card if you need them, if you DONT need those two things however, the note5 beats it in almost every way to be perfectly honest.

Oh also, VR porn nigggaaa, GearVR only works on the S6 and Note5.

Dont even have time to root my tmobile g4. And i dont want to go through the hassle after rooting my xperia neo v. Nexus 4 was fun though

>Both of their cameras are about the same.
That's not true, the V10 has a decent camera, but Samsung always beats the competition in cameras in the last year or two
>>
>>51616780
I thought the G4/V10 has like top 5 camera this year.
>>
Why are people getting G3 over g flex 2, and why is the latter so ignored?

The g flex 2 crushes the G3 and both around the same price currently.
>>
>>51616818
the G4 WAS top 5, but since the V10 and Z5 and 6P came out i think it's only like top 7 or 8.

But Note5 and V10 are both top 5.

Hey guys, what's the best i can get for around 300 euros? (i can go a bit higher if needed)
My use would pretty much be:
>browsing, music, light gaming, texting and not much else.
The only thing i really need is a good battery and not over 5,5" display. I'd also like to root and install a custom ROM someday but it's not necessary. Thanks

So I'm upgrading from the iPhone 4 and missed the Black Friday sale on the Nexus 6. What's my next best option for something similar? Primary functions will be mobile gaming, watching videos/web browsing, and music player.

yes you easily will use more with the OS and a web browser running, let alone background apps as well.

3GB is comfortable, 4GB is VERY comfy.

SO I live in Canada with our dollarydoos, and i need to send my S6 in for a battery replacement cause I am an irresponsible recharger.
I need a cheap af phone like less that 100 dollarydoos for koodo while i wait for my S6 to go through warranty and shit.

>samshit

dude lmao

Honestly the only phones that work decently enough in that category are Windows phones. These come with all sorts of issues (mostly apps either being shitty or non-existent), but WP8.1 and now W10M tends to run better on cheap hardware than Android does.

I wouldn't recommend it as a permanent phone, but the 640 is a good temporary replacement or backup phone. Best part is you don't get uninstallable bloat or a carrier/oem skin.

fuck, seriously? im not the original asker, but this ticks me off. I wish phones would use 1080 ips lcd screens, forget thinness and stay at 7.6MM sides so we could get a fucking good battery life again.

apparantly apple is super prioritizing battery life on the iphone 7, which makes me pretty happy. i am an applefag anyways.
