Though my chinese phone has good gyros and decent PPI screen, YMMV on your device.

Use Kinoni to stream 3d shit from your desktop to your phone. Works pretty well for shit your phone can't handle. Obviously head tracking doesn't function since you're streaming, but it works well enough as a 3d display.

It should be just good enough to make you interested in better vr options, but just awful enough to make you stop using it within a couple of days.

Whether it is "awful" pretty strongly depends on your phone.

But there's as relatively little content as on other VR platforms, so indeed it can't really last more than a few days, unless you watch / play every last damn thing extensively.

I know, I bought a DK2 last year and haven't touched it for months because there's only so much time you can spend with Euro Truck Simulator 2 and the few other games supporting it.

Last year, annoucements were hinting towards Winter 2015 / Spring 2016 for the first "decent" consumer models. But it doesn't seem like we're gonna get anything for this xmas.

I tried an Oculus headset for the first time about a week ago. My first ever VR experience.

Was pretty impressed by the responsiveness. It did give a feeling of presence.
This shit is gunna be pretty wild in another decade or so once we have lots of content and the resolution gets to the point where it just looks like real life.

Yeah, that's the biggest issue currently. While you can overcome the motion sickness quite easily with "training" (starting with short sessions, slowly increasing duration), tons of people will ignore that and then complain that the experience sucks.

Well worth the price. Friends and family enjoyed the demos I gave them of VR, made them actually excited for shit like the Oculus.

I heard that Google cardboard nerds a high ppi screen for a better experience as it gets blurry when the screen is magnified. How will my nexus 4 with a 720p screen fare?

Though I think you might also want slightly better glass as you move up. The cardboard cardboards typically don't have anything too bad, but also not too great...

While that's true to an extent, Cardboard will always be a shitty experience without low-persistence, <20 ms latency, optimized rendering pipeline, higher FOV, better weight and weight distribution, asynchronous time-warp, and maybe some other things, including positional tracking if we're not only comparing it to Gear VR. But even then, the best mobile VR headset, the Gear VR, can be a pretty bad VR experience. Even the Vive/Rift/PSVR can be bad. But they're the best we have, and FAR better than Cardboard.
