Why is green on black text associated with hacking. It can't be because of just one cult classic.
Can it?
but i-it i-is...
I actually don't remeber anybody using green with black before matrix. But I do remember the comand to set them on the windows terminal, it is color 02
I think it's because some early displays only displayed green text on black background.

>1 cult classic
you mean 3

>the OTHER Matrix movies
>cult

this is bait
Monochrome monitors predate the matrix.
>>51581900
this. dubs dont lie
>>51581927
well, at least thw Animatrix was good.
Real hacker use orange on black.
>>51581900
Additionally, green was chosen because it's the easiest color to see against a dark background or in low light for humans, apparently. Wasn't yellow used a bit too?
>>51581820
It just is.
Seeing someone ask this makes me feel old.
My first computer was an Apple //c with a green phosphor display.

This, old monitors were either green on black or amber on black due to them being more comfort able to read.
>>51582080
Additionally, all of the terminal programs at the warehouse I used to work at were set up for green on black. Doing shit from command line is associated with hacking, it just happens that green is a common color for people to set it to.
>@echo off
>color 0a
Welcome to the Matrix.
My friend's dad tells me he was the "hipster"of his group of friends because wheb he built his PC, he chose to have amber on black (which cost more at the time) while all his friends keot with green.
Old /g/urus, is it true the motherboard of old had to have each and every component soldered on by the builder? Like caps and all? How was comoutdr building in the days of olde? Most I ever had to do out of the ordinary was the write protect switch on a drive, master/slave on multiple drives, or jumpers on old OEM boards.
green vs amber?
>>51581820
It used to be white on black.
>>51582230
You sure you don't mean black on white?
I use green text on black because it is easier on my eyes. I can't even view websites that are too 'bright'. The default colors of 4chan are too much for me after too much time.
My choice of colors has nothing to do with hacker culture or a movie I saw.
I am tempted to try amber on black.
On a related note, I went stargazing with a friend of mine years ago. He used red colored flashlights. He said the color red was better for stargazing (I can't remember the exact explanation). I wonder if dark red would be comfortable. Too lazy to try at the moment. But I haven't heard of anyone using that color.

Like this?
>>51581861
Before monitors had good refresh rates green on black was used because the wave length was longer than others and didn't look so choppy.
>>51582435
>>51582476
or this?
>>51582435
Red light is lower frequency, and doesn't fuck up your nightvision.
If you're sitting in the middle of an empty field on a new moon at 2 in the morning and there's no lights around, even the dimmest computer monitors will make you blind until you adjust your eyes again.

>Red light is lower frequency, and doesn't fuck up your nightvision.
Interesting. Thanks.
>>51582476
>>51582499
No, like the png. But red instead of green.

The systems were simple enough to be built from the ground up if you had a brain. Also most pcs came as kits that you would assemble yourself.
Then Bill Gates came up with software piracy and copy protection because of basic for Altair that gave the hobbyist pc scene the cancer it eventually died for.
I'm not that old though, but I know we have at least one person here who owned that Altair.

>that part when the phone falls on the ground

it's not just green on black, the terminal command line itself is associated with hacking.
