I'm freaking out right now. Recently the laptop has been shutting off randomly whenever I move or bump it. And when I tried to check the RAM I get this. Is it a hardware issue, or software? Any help appreciated!
>>
>>51574104
Go to the Apple Store to get a new one
Oh wait.
>>
>>51574104
completely hardware. check your ram, make sure it's properly seated in the slots, clean the pins with rubbing alcohol if you have to.
>>
>>51574121
ha ha, funny.

Also, I ran apt-get upgrade before restarting to a kernel panic message. What shit have I done?
>>
>>51574145
thanks man, but what do you think of >>51574146
>>
the fans and/or heatsinks are probably clogged with dust. Get a proper screwdriver, some compressed air, open the case, and get blowing.
>>
>>51574166
will do. but can that give me kernel panic msg's?
>>
>>51574160
most likely due to said memory issue

hope you didn't fuck the OS up.
>>
>>51574176
yeah, not thrilled i chose full disk encryption atm
>>
>>51574190
gg m8.
>>
>hp
>>
>>51574251
your mom never had an issue with it
>>
Looks more like the GPU is dead.
>>
>>51574316
why do you say that? also when i knock the laptop it shuts down and the reboots. could it be some graphic connector pins?
>>
>>51574349
Does your laptop have a GPU or just intel HD graphics?
>>
>>51574349
There are no connector pins. It's solder that's probably cracked through overheating.
>>
>>51574367
Just HD4000 graphics
>>
>>51574349
not the guy, but think the same... is not normal see that swaped pixels in your monitor
GPU / APU / CPU**??
>>
>>51574374
Then it's probably the RAM or the RAM connector
>>
>>51574381
>>51574373
>>51574367
thnx for responses. is there any way to check, what should i look for?
>>
>>51574374
So it's probably ram
>>
>>51574399
If you have 2 stick of RAM remove one at a time and check if the issue is gone
If you only have 1 stick try it in the other socket
If it's not working in the other RAM socket at all or if you only have 1 socket, buy a new stick of RAM with the same specifications and try if it works.
>>
You need to solder you CPU
>>
Does it have a HDD? I mean if you were bumping it it could be damaged.
>>
>>51574418
good, thanks. will try this
>>
>>51574447
yeah, it does have an HDD. it could be that, is there any way to do a disk check to see if everything is OK?
>>
HDD and CPU shouldn't be the issue. You were not using the HDD at all when you ran memtest86.
>>
>>51574468
It you're running memtest from a usb stick and it looks like that then it's nothing to do with the HDD.
>>
>>51574468
Any linux live usb should have fsck. Can just run fsck /dev/sda<your parition>. Might be an option to check disk in the ubuntu live usb anyway on boot.

welp, when i try to run ubuntu i get this.
>>
>>51574452
The fact that bumping it makes it turn off might indicate a problem with a loose battery connection also. Normally computers don't just turn off immediately unless the power is cut. If it was a memory or graphics issue you'd at least get some sort of blue screen/error message.

That doesn't necessarily solve the graphical bug though, although that itself might be a software issue with the ram test.
>>
>>51574554
its always also plugged into the wall so battery should not be an issue
>>
>>51574548
in windows you did get some bsod?
also, linux kernel panic doesn't show a good trace, it's mandatory check the syslog
>>
>gpu is kill that's happen when u use stupid linux.
>>
>>51574570
Have you tried running a distro from a live cd / stick, or are you only trying to boot your installation? Might wanna try that if you haven't yet, that'll definitely determine if it's a software issue or not.
>>
>>51574611
no, but hardly ever used it in windows. how do i check the syslog?

>>51574624
how could this happen. i know the fan works since it speeds up when needed. what do you think happened to the gpu?

>>51574639
only tried booting my installation, will check live disk soon
>>
>>51574418
done checking with diffrent RAM / slots. always end up with kernel panic when i try to boot up
>>
>>51574624
He does not have a discrete GPU
>>51574698
So you checked with other RAM, too? Then I'd say that you'll have to replace the main board or CPU, one of them is faulty.
>>
>>51574711
Don't listen to this guy OP, he's jumping to baseless conclusions, try the live disk first.
>>
>>51574711
yes, ram is checked. could it be that I have overheated the CPU even though i sometimes hear the fan throttles up when warm?

Also HDD SMART check and short DST is OK
>>
>>51574736
will do, brb
>>
>>51574657

>>
>>51574748
When the CPU overheats it's supposed to throttle/turn off, so probably not
>>
>>51574736
YES!! live disk works and i can use "try xubuntu"!

since i ran apt-get upgrade before restarting, does this mean I have a software issue?
>>
>shutting off randomly whenever I move or bump it

motherboard is kill
>>
>>51574828
ok, thnks! good to hear

>>51574862
dont think so, all seems to work well when i boot using a livedisk
>>
>>51574854
Lolno. It's clearly a hardware issue is memtest86 breaks.
>>
>>51574881
>is memtest86 breaks.
what do you mean?
>>
>>51574898
If memtest86 looks like in the picture you posted in the OP, then it's a hardware issue.
>>
>>51574854
Yes, it's either software or your hard drive.

You're probably gonna have to do a clean install using your live disk, since you seem to have fucked your install with an upgrade.
>>
>>51574777
thanks, but i cannot even log in. i just get to the screen where i can choose to boot into ubuntu (which then leads to me getting a kernel panic) or doing memtests (which i'm doing now). I cannot acces the HDD since i have full disk encryption and never reach the login screen

>>51574922
what do you think? all still OK at 57%

>>51574933
yeah, probably. what do you think caused it? also why does it shut off sometimes when i move/knock it?
>>
It's OK man you have a leetbook so its actually a ho exclusive feature.
>>
>>51575042
i dont follow, what do you mean?
>>
>>51575033
>also why does it shut off sometimes when i move/knock it?
Because it's a hardware issue
Might have to do with a broken HDD and the HP drop protection, but probably not.
>>
>>51575084
But i did some HP HDD checks and it passed. Also the RAM memtest just passed.

Im thinking I fucked up by running apt-get upgrade. is this probable?

also, thank you guise for all your help. just starting to accept that i have 320 gb of random data...
>>
>>51575033
The bump issue might be something totally unrelated.

Your apt-get upgrade caused this shit though. The slightest error can fuck you over like that. Happened to me once, and I had to do a clean install. Luckily I have a separate home partition so I didn't lose any files. You on the other hand fucked yourself with the full encryption.

Man, why would you willingly set up your installation to lock you out of you hard drive when the install gets fucked? Unless you have a job where security is seriously important full disk encryption is a meme that you shouldn't have fallen for.
>>
You should be able to encrypt the HDD fron a livecd
>>
>>51575161
yeah, you are right. do you think just encrypting my home partition would have been better in this scenario?
>>
>>51575182
*decrypt
>>
>>51575182
>>51575197
how? by using "try ubuntu"?
>>
>>51575183
Yes, your home partition stores all personal files (images, film, documents, save files for games, the whole shebang), your OS and installed programs shouldn't be encrypted, there's simply not much point in that.

thank you, but i'm giving up. its gonna take to much time and i dont have another hdd large enough. i've come to accept that i have pretty much 320 GB OF RANDOM DATA.

>>51575333
got it for free

return it

hhahah, yeah nope.
