well dude, Arch is kinda not-so-good now because of the recent systemd thingy and how poisonous its community is.

Another distro that picked up its philosophy of being interesting and innovative and really simple and fast is Void Linux, I would suggest installing that and starting from there.

If you want "mature Linux" you can install Fedora or Debian

Oh, ok. Just wanted to say that I was able to fix screen tearing on MATE with both nvidia and intel graphics by running nvidia-xconfig to generate a new xorg.conf and using compton as compositor.
On Cinnamon, you can't just use a different compositor I think because it's using a fixed one.

If you want a floating wm/DE, just do XFCE or yeah, openbox.
In my opinion, tiling is the way to go, though.
