but where are you going to use it
>>
>>51571555
Glowing Li-Fi Dragon Dildos.
Portable Internet of the new age.
>>
>>51571555
If I put one lifi bulb in my office here then my desktop, tablet, and cellphone would get perfect signal all over the room. All without pesky neighbors even being aware that I had a wireless network since they couldn't detect it from outside.
>>
>>51571580
>perfect signal all over the room
except under your table, when your device is oriented the wrong way (face down on the table?)... if these things don't apply for whatever reason due to some magical antenna/receiver thing, then your neighbours might as well be able to pick up the signal with a pair of binoculars
>>
>>51571545
>Where Wi-fi is not safe, such as hospitals
They STILL haven't fucking FIXED THIS?!
>>
>>51571600
Why would I intentionally put anything under a table? I don't have anything under a table right now. Why would I leave them face down either?
Even if a double pane window, during the day when more light is reflected from the outside then is emitted from the inside, allowed a party with some insanely sensitive device to look into the room and pick up the signal, it would still be more secure than a wifi signal. And I have shades and curtains on my windows.
You've got to be pretty desperate to find a problem here because your post is seriously retarded. Like not a single thing there has any validity whatsoever.
>>
>>51571646
Do you keep your phone always in the same place? With the same orientation? No, because it's a small mobile device. You throw it on a table and then don't have perfect signal anymore.
Some people have their desktop PCs under a table. Some have limited space. You really want to clutter your table with dozens of light receivers?
>>
>implying wifi is the bottleneck

Your shitty cable company is to blame here. Unless li-fi helps them lay down infrastructure, it's a waste of money.
>>
>>51571674
That receiver would be built into the device, just like the IR sensor on a TV is.
And much like a TV with an IR sensor, the IR blaster doesn't need to be directly pointed at it. Matter of fact I can aim my remote at any wall in my room, even the ceiling, and the TV mysteriously picks up the signal. Funny how light bounces around like that.
Orientation isn't an issue. You'd have to physically obscure the device to cut off signal, and that just doesn't happen. I don't go out of my way to cover my desk with a blanket.
>>
>get li-fi
>doesnt work because i have cool white bulbs lighting my room creating light pollution
RIP.
>>
>>51571703
With IR light that works great because not as many things absorb IR light, If your using a cool white bulb ALOT of it will get absorbed by the random shit so orientation does matter.
>>
>>51571724
I'm just going to sit here and laugh at you since you're fixating on color temp and that shows you don't have a single clue what you're talking about.
>>
>>51571703
>Matter of fact I can aim my remote at any wall in my room, even the ceiling, and the TV mysteriously picks up the signal.
What magical television do you have? Every single IRELAND based device I have touched since the late 80s through to today has been hyper sensitive to direction, with no exceptions. I really, really don't expect li-fi to be any different.

The article in the OP is just mainstream media hyping up something small to make it sound like the second coming of sliced bread.
>>

>>
>>51571545
>Cant put a desktop under a desk
>Cant put a htpc in a cabinet
>Will be literally zero times faster than wifi because it's only as fast as the gigabit ethernet cable that connects it to the router.
>can't go through walls so I'd have to buy ten bulbs for each of my rooms to cover my house versus a single wi-fi router (and I'd still have to buy a router anyway)

top kek, I bet you think solar (FREAKING) roadways and thorium powered cars are the future too.

>>
>>51572070
>once thought
You poor soul
>>
>>51571545
I find it funny how people think that Li-Fi is going to change anything.
Even if you install this in a room you still have the usual coverage problems.
Now as for the implementation.
ยด
>Offices might replace their cable network with this, by putting a computer under a desk and a reciever/sender somewhere on top of the computer monitor, so long as you can set the bandwith it uses it should be viable for office use.

>Mobile devices would need to be redisigned to acomodate Li-Fi and even if the implementation would be popular amongts mobile users it would still be a pain not to cover the LED's necessary for the comunication so I doubt that will ever replace wifi in that aspect.

>As for home usage well, I just don't see it becoming popular it might work and be cheaper but it might not be effective or as confortable as using Wi-Fi if you use portable hand held devices.

Light will never replace Modulated Radio Waves, it might in some areas but never it will never rule the market for its shortcomings are too great as of now.

>>
>can't be used in the dark

Might at well just use cables since it's 1000% faster than wifi
>>
we live in a time where even lightbulbs have the internet.
starwars, eat your heart out
>>
My shitty internet is capped at 10Mb (even though I pay for 20, fuck you Vodafone), I only use Wifi because that's one less cable and also when I fap to porn on the toiled with my phone, so that's the most I am using 9Mb out of 300 (WiFi N). So I guess I won't be needing this and neither will 99% of people.
>>
Everyone seems to be talking about having in your room or in your house but wouldn't this be used on the top of houses and building as an alternative to digging up the roads and to get internet out to remote locations and such. As a replacement for fibre wires it's interesting I think.
>>

Reminder that energy saving bulbs are a scam and bad for your eyes.
They never last long enough to recoup the initial investment, LEDs get noticeably dimmer over time even if the driver board doesn't fail.
The flickering of the light and the poor quality of the produced light are bad for your eyes.
Incandescent is still the cheapest and most natural and pleasing light for human eyes.

So I need to have an emitter on my laptop somewhere?
Maybe the apple logo could emit li-fi signal.
or would the uplink just be plain wifi?

as for the 'under the table' thing, light still gets under the table, just not as bright. there might be some packet loss but I don't think it will be a big deal.
>>
why not just use orientated lasers, then... afaik, the problem has never been the medium, but the transceivers(?) and the current protocols(?) being shit.

That's assuming the driver board doesn't fail and the bulb doesn't just die instantly.
But even the good ones cite a 0.7 index, meaning it will only emit 70% of it's original brigthness at the end of it's useful life.
The reality is much worse, because this is only true in absolutely optimal conditions.
The higher the operating temperatures the quicker LEDs get dimmer, and the difference is massive.
You could be looking at 50% brigtness in less than 15 000 hours i.e. less than 2 years of constant use.

Except you won't wait till it gets to 50%, if you bought a bulb that's just right it will get annoyingly dim long before that, even with regular usage.
And good luck putting it in a light fixture, that's probably going to kill it before it gets too dim.
>>

where it's point-to-point (ptp), yes, it's an excellent way to 'connect' to specific points without wiring

they're quite realiable with little latency, with only rain and fog causing issues (both diffuse light and reduce visibility in general)

there are long-range ptp wifi setups out there as well

This is pretty exciting stuff, unfortunately the visible light spectrum is more prone to problems with obstructions. Not sure how they would deal with that.

Its 100% pointless to begin with.

>doesnt work in your bag, pocket, or under a table
>all mobile units would have to support this natively with sensors on all sides
>youd need a light on your device that would kill the battery life and be very annoying

>>
these arguements are hilarious. i hope you guys joking. does your wifi not work on your phone cuz your phone is in your back pocket? does it not work because its behind a wall? do you have have any clue how lightwaves and radiowaves even work? take a physics class, jesus
>>
I guess I shouldn't be surprised that /g/ doesn't understand that the speed is only mentioned to solidify the technology's viability as a connection method.

This tech isn't meant to replace wifi. Stop thinking it is. It's meant to be an alternative to wired connections.

I honestly can't believe that you idiots are so short-sighted that when you're provided a new tool to solve problems, you turn your nose up at it.
>>
>>51578033

light has no mass, therefore not affected by physics

>>
>>51578100
The anon is suggesting that the lightwaves would propagate through walls and things and not actually get blocked, much like radio waves.

The anon does not understand why radio waves are able to travel through walls without losing signal coherence and why light would not.
>>
>>51577752
It would be easy to aim a sensor with a binocular.
>>
>>51578177
>herpa doo sensor and binoculars
The main problem with this is that you'd have to be right under a light. Unless you start hanging fucking orb lights in the middle of the room you won't even be sending usable light outside the fucking room, dipshit.
>>
>>51578177
Are you actually making the argument that the hardest part of breaking into a wireless network is being able to detect the signal?
>>
>>51577877
Isloation ffs. Anyways around here no one shuts of their phone or wifi and theres 0 problems.

>>51578087
Funny how the article talks about it as an alternative to wifi, and we do too. Because thats the topic.

isps or whoever using it to transfer data wirelessly between stationary points os something else, and can be done with normal radio signals too for that matter.
>>
>>51578205
Either the tech can use light that is bouncing of walls, in which case the binocular thing would work well.

Or if it needs to see the light directly, the tech is even more useless.

>>51578222
Why would you think that? I said it would just be even easier.
>>
>>51578285
The article says three things in comparison to wifi

1) This tech is faster than wifi (on the downstream)
2) This tech does not contribute to radio congestion
3) This tech is not a viable replacement for wifi and should, rather, be used as a supplement

Sorry, what the fuck were you saying, again? The article says this shit will replace wifi?

Fuck off.
>>
>>51577293
Oh look, its that same retard again who is obsessed with putting things under tables.

>>all mobile units would have to support this natively with sensors on all sides
No, they wouldn't. The camera on a smartphone or tablet is all it would take. Light bounces off of walls in rooms, and that carried the signal and maintains the connection. The sensor needn't be aimed directly at the emitter.

>>youd need a light on your device that would kill the battery life and be very annoying
We're talking about three LEDs that are so low power you can't even see them in a dark room.

>>youd need a "light router" in every room that will be more complicated than a normal router
You'd need a single router, with a light socket connected to it. This really isn't hard to understand.

>>need to have your lights on for it to work
No, only the three signaling LEDs would remain on, the rest of the bulb would be powered off.

>>can only have one network
Every single light could be its own network.

>>even easier for potential criminals to tap into at range
This is just laughably wrong, and you're a complete retard.

ITT: People who know absolutely nothing about a tech try to discredit it and fail miserably
>>
>>51578352
Reflected light is unlikely to be usable. Photons don't actually bounce off matter. If a photon carries sufficient energy as it approaches matter, it is absorbed by an electron. The electron then shifts to a different orbital and emits a new photon of different energy. As such, light that bounces off a wall is unlikely to carry any usable data, unless the wall is of a specific colour and made of specific materials that can be accounted for during signal transmission (this scenario is possible in an office).

The technology is easiest to implement using a direct light source. This isn't a problem, however, as most light sources are overhead anyway. The idea is that this tech should be tied into the lighting system of the room you want to use it is. Setting up the light source so that it won't be interrupted should never be a problem.
>>
>>51578410
>>51578410
The first points are meaningless since it can't replace it.

Still we are talking about its viability in a home or office or such.

>>51578415

>>
>>51578715
Allow me to reiterate:
ITT: People who know absolutely nothing about a tech try to discredit it and fail miserably

Li-Fi is not a theory. There are dozens of already existing platforms that have been thoroughly tested and demoed at trade shows going all the way back to 2010.
Everything I stated is strictly factual.
>>
>>51578738
You are nothing more than a shill or troll.
>>
>>51578755
You're a tech illiterate retard with no ground to stand on.
Educate yourself instead of blindly talking out of your ass like a child.

https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Li-Fi
http://spectrum.ieee.org/searchContent?q=Li-Fi

A series of photodiodes just becomes one more element in a camera, and that camera becomes capable of sending and receiving li-fi data.
Ambient light is not an issue with connectivity.
The light bounces off of walls, and does not need a totally direct light of sight.

All of these are facts that have been demonstrated, years ago in fact. None of this is new except refined signaling and light sources to drive bandwidth higher.
I want you to answer a personal question: What is it that makes children feel the need to argue about topics that they know literally nothing about? You absolute are a child, you're mentally inferior in every possible way, so you should be able to offer insight into the matter.
>>
>>51578834
What education is needed to get this job?
>>
>>51571845
Mine arent, actually my view of my cable receiver is completely blocked by a bookshelf, but it just point over it and it picks up every button push. Its not a matter of any wall, its pointing it in a direction that the single bounce will thus hit the receiver, like in a bounce shot in pool. If led light is the transmitter though and its the only light source in the room and its senaitive enough to operate at the speed of led, it will have to be set just right to avoid bouce, other wise it runs the riak of echo as light bounces off all the walls and arrives giga seconds later. (Right terminology?) I do see the point, but the principle is perhaps different if we are utilizing light than we muat allow for this light echo.
>>
>>51571545
By that reason why not go all the way and use gamma rays to transmit data. Sure everyone would be dead buth think of the insane speeds!

Harald Haas is a researcher, and that article is about his still in development model. It is not a theoretical maximum of any kind. The maximum the reflected light can carry is directly proportional to the maximum bandwidth of the emitter in a straight line.
The article is also years old. His latest working models push well above 1Gbps. You would know this if you actually did any research instead of just continued shitposting on your current childish tangent.

Literally everything you stated is 100% incorrect.

Pathetic, mentally challenged child. A simple insult is not a form of a fallacy used in argument. Its an insult, one you're deserving of receiving.

Two of the videos at the top of the youtube page are speeches and demonstrations given by Haas himself that include a plethora of relevant data. If you weren't such a shitposting retard you'd refrain from trying to argue and simple watch them to better yourself.
The IEEE spectrum page lists a handful of articles all about 1Gbps li-fi.

Haas himself had a model over a year ago that reached 10Gbps. They were pulling 3.5Gbps using a single 5mw LED. There are working models now that reach 10 times that bandwidth.

A photodiode element in a camera isn't limited to 3kb/s. This is just you being a childish shitposter and pulling things out of your ass for the purpose of being an annoying retard.
Reflected li-fi is hilariously faster than 70Mbps.
Li-fi absolutely is massively faster than wi-fi.

Every single thing you posted was 100% factually incorrect.
So, child, why is it that you feel the need to argue about topics you clearly know nothing about? Still waiting on that answer. I want you to give an honest answer as to why you're so dedicated to the art of shitposting.

>A photodiode element in a camera isn't limited to 3kb/s
A phone camera like those used today. Got a source?

>Reflected li-fi is hilariously faster than 70Mbps.
citation needed, how much slower is the reflected light then? the 70mbs is from 2013 when 1gbs was around for direct connections.

>Li-fi absolutely is massively faster than wi-fi.
It was only now demonstrated to be as fast as wifi (1gbps) in an office.

That already exists with laser arrays. We're beaming stuff up to the ISS right now with lasers in fact.
lifi just does the same with low power LEDs for shorter distances.

Seems kinda dumb. Besides, 2.4GHz and 5GHz is plenty fast. We don't even get to use their max speeds because of the ISPs.

I will state again that reflected light will lose most of its coherence. If we work on the figures given a few years ago when 1gbps was being experimented with and 70mbps was achieved through reflection (and we can safely assume that was only a single reflection), then we know that reflected light only maintains 7% signal coherence. That's abysmal. There's no point in beefing up the system so that it can utilize reflected light when you can simply position the light source(s) such that they can cast light directly onto the receiver (ie: on the ceiling).

Not only are you wrong, but you're arguing for the sake of defending a technology from a technical disadvantage that, in practice, is irrelevant.
>>

You're trying to argue against a proven principle, one that has been demonstrated to thousands of people at trade shows. One that you can watch right on youtube. The system works. The kicker is that its not just one system. It isn't just one group working on this, not just one university. Dozens of groups working independently all arrived at working models that could be translated into a consumer networking solution.
You are arguing that the sky isn't blue, and being too stubborn to only tilt your head up and check.

You have to have an IQ of 50 to be this much of a monumental dumbfucking child.
Demonstrably you are a functional retard.

Right after you post your ID to prove you're not just a dumbshit child.
You're making a gross assumption off of a single out of context quote from some Australian news site. Another individual made a comment about a reflected signal, and nothing about the hardware in question was mentioned. You are only assuming that bandwidth dropped from 1Gbps to 70Mbps. I know for a fact this is wrong because it has been covered in one of Haas' demonstrations.

Still every single thing you've posted has been 100% factually wrong. Still you have utterly refused out of pure willful ignorance to actually learn about the subject matter, you insist on only shitposting.
>muh 3kb/s

You quite literally pulled a lie straight out of your ass then pretended it was factual. Nothing you say or do can be taken seriously. You're a retard in the most absolute sense of the word. A childish shitposting retard.

I haven't made a single thread on this subject. Directly above you just threw an all caps tantrum saying you want all li-fi threads banned. Because they make you angry, because you're mentally unstable.

You make totally false assertions about something, I correct them.
I shitpost, I link to technical speeches, demonstrations, and IEEE spectrum articles on the subject. Thereby providing reliable and actually relevant information.
However you just continue to shitpost. You've done nothing but shitpost, that seems like you have some complex, an obsession. You just have to shitpost and spread FUD about a wireless connectivity standard that uses LEDs.

Does it confuse you? Is that the source of your anger? You hate things you don't understand? Pretty common with autism spectrum, anon. You should go talk to a doctor. At the very least for your stunted mental development and temper. Tantrums like that will wear out your keyboard.

it'll be in your wifi AP settings (in the router)
upside: casual users won't see it when their machines' look for networks
downside: you also won't see it, so you'll need to manually add your network to devices, so make sure you actually know your SSID
side note: not actually secure, people who know what they're doing can still see your network, and it's not very difficult to get the SSID
