Graphic card general. What are we buy, looking for, waiting for?

I can't tell if this is a good enough deal for a low end graphics card

Exactly...

>>51546387

The most affordable 380 is $170 due to a holiday price cut. The 4GB 380s run for up to $240. It's a mid tier card.
>>
You can get a 290 all day for $200.
>>
>>51545402

Should I just give in and go for a 970? I don't have enough for a 980 and I'm not adventurous enough to go for an AMD solution with nvidia rigging games to perform better on their cards.
>>
>>51545402

i am using 2x 280x crossfire

>>
>>51549210
?
Also OP here, after reading the reviews it turns out that card has dual 80 mm fan's which wouldn't be acceptable regarding noise, so I passed.
How is it I'm actually interested in your experience running it crossfire.
I'll list out the questions if you don't mind.
a. how has it been, do you like it, do you feel like you fucked up etc.
b. Does crossfire actually work on everything today?
c. How big is your psu?
d. how much ram does each card have?
e. do you feel like you should have gotten more ram assuming you have a 2/3gb card rather than a 4/6/8?
f. did you buy them outright or did you do the buy one 280x and then buy a second one.

Please answer any questions you want and ignore those you don't want to/don't care about.
Other kinda random stuff is how many monitors are you using can you multi monitor with crossfire etc.
>>
>>51547755
EVGA has a $289 version, with Visa Checkout on newegg you can get $25 off. I might get one of those and step it up to a 980 in a couple months.
>>
bump for real
>>
>>51549302
So this list, I'm serious, and I hope there is at least one guy that has a 280x, rather than 380x crossfire setup that can do a "tell all"

AMD is fucking garbage. Everything they make is absolutely, objectively crappy as shit and only a fat neckbeard would buy this shit-tier crappy shit because he's afraid of running out of autismbux (because God forbid he spend less money on Taco Bell and Mountain Dew.) I tried building an AMD gaming rig once and it was the worst experience of my life. First off, that CPU clip is fucking impossible to use. It looks just like an old Pentium CPU clip, but it's autistically retarded and I couldn't deal with it. And the graphics card was so fucking huge, I had to cut a hole all the way around my case to fit it in. Fucking AMD.

But wait, that's not even the best part! When I tried to start up my shitty autismbox (which I sold to the Association of Retarded Citizens BTW) the absolutely massive power draw dimmed every light in my house and throughout the entire neighborhood like I was firing up fucking ENIAC in the 1920s or some bullshit. I had plenty of time to worry about my power bill too, because this shitty thing couldn't figure out which of its 32 CPU cores to use and it took half a day to boot. As soon as I tried to play a game (fucking Starcraft from 1998), it lagged so hard it went backwards. I thought I should try downloading a driver, but there aren't any. There are no fucking drivers. What the shit, AMD? No wonder Apple doesn't use your shit. It wasn't long after that that I realized this thing was putting out more heat than a goddamn jet engine and it burned my house down.

Two weeks later, when I sold that piece of shit, I built an Intel/Nvidia rig! Holy shit, it's like jacking into the Matrix! I built it 5 years ago and it still runs every game in 4K at 240 FPS while using no power and it actually cools my house during the summer. What a beautiful machine, I seriously hope none of you are poor and stupid enough to buy AMD.

b. i had problems on csgo. i had to disable crossfire. csgo is now working fine with crossfire disabled
c. it is 1000w but it is an overkill
d. 3g
e. at the time they were very good cards
f. yes i bought them together but only because i wanted to mine litecoins

of course you can multi monitor.
>>
>>51551791
thanks for your info man, I'm going to re read it and maybe ask some questions, but I got what you said.
>>
>>51551791
So regarding cs:go did you actually need crossfire to 60fps that, or were you doing a 120/144 etc setup? I assumed that you could 1080p/60 cs:go with a single card.
>>
I wouldn't recommend buying anything less than a 4 gb GTX 960. If you can't afford it, save up. Everything below that won't perform sufficiently with new games, and rememeber, you aren't buying it for now, but for the future too.

R9 390s and 390Xs are cheap now. They JUST dropped the price. As a 390X owner I can tell you it's a good card.

I'm on an ancient HD 5770 with a Phenom II X2 550 unlocked to 4 cores. Been considering an upgrade.

I'm going with Nvidia this time, the top contenders are the GTX 750, GTX 750 TI. Realistically I can spend a bit more, as much as GTX 960, but I'm concerned my CPU will bottleneck the GPU.

I just need a 1080 144hz monitor and a card to drive it.

so r9 390x is about the edge of my budget but from what I understand, it isnt that much better than a 390 and the 8gb of vram just isnt going to be used any time soon like in the next 5yrs.

Im considering the 970 since new eggs got it considerably cheaper but the 3.5 is hard to get over unless there was a driver fix to just not use that memory slot IF i get a game that even bothers to go that high.

fuck
>>
I bought $120 750ti for my budget build, and I'm not willing to spend any more. Did I fuck myself over, or is that the best that I could have gone?
>>
>>51552808
Unless you're willing to buy used.

You could find perfectly fine working 7950s at that price, but you also could be getting an abused card that won't last 2 months.
>>
>>51552822
Alright. What's the next step up on the price/performance scale when I want to upgrade?
>>
>>51552869
I'd suggest to simply be happy with the 750Ti until next year when the new 16nm GPUs are out. The $150 price segment will assuredly be getting a revamp like we were used to seeing with every other die shrink.

I'm not satisfied with the price of anything out now except for 290Xs, the Fury, and the 980Ti
>>
>>51549210
I am using a single 280x and i feel there is no need to replace it. There is very little tinkering i have to do to the settings of popula AAA games to have them run smoothly at 60 fps. Some of them don't need to be touched at all to run ultra.

Oh, now I understand why you guys hate Nvidia so much

Selling a card that ends up weaker than a 970 a few years later and still priced so high
>>
I'm poor as shit but I still want to play the newer games. I have two choices: PS4 or a new PC.

Of course I considered PC to be a better choice because games are overall cheaper. Now I have a few issues:

1. I was going to switch to nvidia but the prices seem to be much better on the AMD side, so I might have to stay there

2. Everytime I mention the 380 people look at me like thinking that I should go all the way and grab a 390, but that's just too fucking expensive for me

3. In 2011 I wasted 300€ total in a processor + GPU combo and it still is able to play something like GTA V at lowest settings, 40fps but I'm really unsure now that I can achieve the same thing (relatively cheap PC that will last until 2018-2019 even at shit graphical settings)

4. I bought into the 21:9 "meme" (honestly it's fucking great though) and I'm not sure I can rely on 1920x1080 benchmarks when my resolution is 2560x1080 (though I'm willing to use my old 120hz monitor and play at 1680x1050 if that's going to help things)

5. Every fucking game makes a big deal of RAM now and the average GPU with 4GB doesn't get that cheap

So I'm not really sure what to buy.

I want to upgrade from a GTS 450 to something that let's me play everything for a while. I'm not interested in resolutions higher than 1080p and I'd like to stick with nvidia. So I was thinking about the 750ti, but I see that recently the gtx 950 came out. I have 8GB of RAM.
What do?

Buy the reference 290 and then rip the cooler off and replace with 3rd party coolersl ike the raijintek morpheus, arctic accelero, gelid icy vision etc etc.

>>
>>51554058
If you want a low or mid tier card, just grab anything from now.
It probably won't be too different.

However, if you want a high end card, save up for Pascal. High end Pascals have 16 fucking gigs of vram. Who needs that much is anyone's guess.
But that's not all... all 16 gigs is connected to a massive bus and the memory chips are millimeters away from the GPU.
You think 338 bit memory bandwidth on the Titan X is wide?
Pepper your angus for as much as 4096 bit memory bandwidth on the Pascal.
>>
>>51554178

Playing at 4k is crazy demanding and opinion is divided on what hardware is needed. I think a highly clocked hawaii card can drive 4k generally at high settings and get 30-50fps. Others want ultra or bust and that requires way more horsepower.

The base clock of 947mhz doesn't mean shit if its a reference card as you'll want to replace the cooler (and all viable options allow for heavy overclocking).

Should I upgrade from a 760 to a 970 in my 08 Mac Pro 3.1? Before you say anything, it was free electronic waste from a lab. The 290 reference isn't even that bad

Limiting it to 60% fan speed at the highest load is kind of loud but not unbearable, and keeps your temps under 90c so no throttling.

If noise isn't a problem at all? It's a great cooler at 100% speed. Just clean it from dust sometimes.

On average the 280x is faster, but it basically lacks support for all of AMD's secondary features, like freesync for vidya. Plus the 380 is considerably faster at tessellation (its faster than even the hawaii based cards at it).

Unless the 280x is dirt cheap i'd prefer the 380 these days simply because of the updated featureset, even if it is slower in some games (some, not all).

What is dragging AMD in this regard? Why cant they into OC? Or can they, but its not 1:1 comparison you can make between their clocks etc. since its different architecture (maxwell vs. gnc)

I want to monitor

>GPU(health", heat, GPU fan, ghz/clock/memory rates)

I use HDD Guardian for now.

>Boot time(s)
If possible? How long does it take, the processor usage etc.

Preferrably simple, lightweight programs like HDD guardians which can test the equipment too - like HDD guardians tests hard drives with their own firmware.

The 380 is the best card for the price range, right? On Tom's Hardware's benchmarks, it did significantly better than 960, not much worse than the $50 more expensive 380X, and the next steps up from both AMD and NVIDIA are about $100 more.

AMD's new cards can't into OC because AMD already is pushing the hardware as far as it will go, speed wise, when they sell it because they really need the performance. AMD's graphics department is struggling because they bet on 14nm being ready in 2015.
It wasn't ready and so they're stretching the tech they have as far as it will go.

Not so sure I want to spend all that money on a 980Ti, though I do kind of want it. Just not sure if I need it.

I'm not really going to game at anything higher than 1080p right now though. But is the 980Ti a good option if I play games that aren't AAA or Witcher 3? I don't play AAA games all too often. Last one I played was MGSV and my 560 ran it above 30fps decent enough.

The only game I'd care for is Cyberpunk2077, but that's not till another 2ish years. Also no gameplay footage yet. I might get a look at it and hate it.

>1080p gaming.
Actually that and lower resolutions are where nVidia is the stronger GPU manufacturer.

I don't know why, but their GPUs benchmark on game tests better in 1080p and lower resolutions.

AMD takes over in 1440p (unless we are SINGLE Titan X or SINGLE 980Ti) and AMD takes over in x-fire vs. sli too.

TL;DR So you want nVidia GPU for 1080p gayming, but I am unsure to recommend exact model.

>The r9 380 is $180

Fucking Burgerstan and its great prices

A 380, even just a 2GB one, is at least €230 here

I don't want to buy some edgemaster riceturd gaming mouse for 6 bucks less, give me a fucking 25% off on a 390 or some shit like that god damn
>>
Anyone else waiting for the Cyber Monday deals?
>>
>Sapphire R9 390

Is a 550W PSU sufficient? I don't plan on overclocking right away, maybe some years down the line.
>>
>>51558461
>390x

No fucking way, get a 290x/980
>>
>>51558620

Ye
>>
>>51558626
550W is plenty for any single GPU even with fairly agressive overclocking.
>>
Thinking of getting the r9 390. Anyone know what brand I should look for? Is that a good card? I wanted to get it from newegg but I noticed the deal too late. Would 255 be a good price for it?
>>
>>51558713
Sapphire R9 390 was the recommended R9 390 for me couple nights ago.

Consensus was to avoid Asus R9 390 because bad fans.
>>
>>51558735
The newegg deal was an MSI. I think they're pretty good too, right?
>>
>>51558735
>>51558713
I've been looking at it too since its miles better than any card at the $200 price point.
I'm afraid of it being retarded loud+hot though
>>
So I don't see any cards on sale for Friday. Do they ever go on sale?
>>
babby's first /g/-post

should i pull the trigger for 400 eurobugs?
>>
>>51558849
It's a good card for 1440p gaymen, what you need it for?
>>
>>51558849
The 390 goes for about 326 Euro here.
The 390X for about 399. German prices.
>>
>>51558867
basically i just want to play vidya without having to worry about performance issues for the next 1 and a half years. 4k isnt a priority right now.
>>
>>51558903
wrong pic. meant the 390X.
>>
>>51558580
How are Powercolor compared to Asus, MSI, SAPPHIRE, etc?
>>
>>51558962
sounds like your buy then, it wont get you great graphics but it will do easily
>>
>>51558977
There's a GIGABYTE card on Amazon for $200 with a $20 mail in rebate.
>>
Asus 970 strix for 386 merkel coins where I'm from.
yay or nay?

Currently having a 650 ti which after the latest drivers, bf4 runs tacky with some tearing (46-56fps)
>>
>>51553219
Are you actually me, I have a GTS 450 too.

Thinking about an EVGA 970. Only gonna cost me $290. I can't remember if I'd need a new PSU if I did, though.
>>
>>51558975
Prices just dropped yesterday. I'd wait a day or a week and see if they go a little lower, but it's a good price already. It was 20-30 Euro more yesterday.

it's not HDMI 2.0?

I want a gtx 960 but it doesn't seem to really improve gtav graphics and since I can still run most games on high with my gtx 560 ti should I even upgrade or wait until I upgrade my whole build in like 3-5 years?
>>
>>51559364
oh I just realized not ALL PORTS all HDMI 2.0 at the back of the TV

Go to your nvidia driver and check the settings for multi-display output.

how long before the new nvidia pricing takes effect, i'd like a better deal on the 950
>>
>>51559438
There's one HDMI 2.0 and I didn't plug it in there lel

>>51559444
never if you are in Europe
>>
>>51559458

i'm not, i just don't play anything on the bleeding edge and it would be a solid pickup for 100 or less
>>
>>51559366
Well, it'll be half a year until next gen, so it's not like something better is right around the corner. That said, what with jumping over 20nm node right to 16/14nm node, pascal/arctic islands is expect to be quite a big leap, performance-wise.

That said, I would be surprised if the 560ti will perform adequately for much longer, if you keep playing new games.
>>
I bought the R9 390 Nitro recently on recommendation but...
>8GB VRAM
It has never used more than 4.5 even on the most demanding games, am i doing something wrong or is 8GB too much for a mid-tier card?
>>
>>51559566

yup

4 is overkill if you are on 1080 still
>>
>>51559566
My thinking is that with VR shit coming out soon the VRAM usage will only go up with time
>>
>>51559581
I recently upgraded to 1440p, but 4.5 is still the most.
>>
>>51559566
i managed to get 8.6 ram use when I had titan x SLI + 4k + EVERYTHING maxed out and FPS was around 70ish.
>>
>>51559566

It's a soon sort of thing. Sure, nothing hits it now but give it about a year or so with VR, like stated, and next gen bullshit +4K and you'll be glad you've got that 5th GB. Even if you only hit 5-6/8 you've still used it and not had to upgrade the card like 3.5 fags.
>>
>>51559566
>hawaii
>mid-tier
wat. Hawaii is still the second best GPU in AMD lineup. That's high-end, not mid-tier.
>>
>>51559587
>>51559716
The only problem i see with this is that with VR there will not only be higher VRAM usage, but also more stress on the gpu itself, forcing me to play on lower settings that will also use less VRAM.
>>
>>51559749
Nah Skyrim with around 30 graphics mods or so at 1440p runs at 35FPS max, not bad, but not impressive either seeing as it's a 4 year old game. It may just be my 8GB RAM but i doubt it.
>>
>>51559566
There is zero harm in having more VRAM. AMD just used larger VRAM modules, because why the fuck not? GDDR5 is EOL. It'll be replaced by HBM and GDDR5X next generation.
RAM is a simple story. Having more then you need has no benefit. But having less than you need instantly leads to abysmal performance.
>>
How many AMD users experience driver issues?
I mostly play older games, and AMD fits my budget, but I don't want to deal with DirectX shit not working
>>
>>51559925
that may be true, but 6GB for a card with this amount of power would have sufficed and lowered the price by at least 15$ making it more competitive on the market without sacrificing actual performance.
>>
>>51559514
I decided not to get it then, 200 bucks is too much for something I'm going to replace in 3 years
>>
>>51559972

I haven't had any so far. Granted I've only had it for about a month. Crimson crashed on me one time and had none of the other side effects reported.
>>
>>51560107
I've been using AMD cards since the 4890. The last time I had a driver issue was when my 7970 was still fresh. For the past few years? Nothing. Got a 290X when it launched, not a problem with the drivers ever.
>>
>>51560236

As a new buyer I feared the memes, but figured they were just that.

Very happy with my purchase.
>>
MSI R9 390X or EVGA GTX 980 Superclocked?
390x is £70 cheaper than the 980.
>>
>mfw 560 ti since 2011
>It's gone so strong, still med-high on most games minus ark, witcher and GTA
>Ordered a gtx 980 for $350

Glorious time to be master race
>>
>>51560546

I would go with the 980 if i had the money. But to be honest you either get a 390 or a 980ti, the 980 is shit price/performance.
>>
>>51560717
>buys low end shit

What is the best custom pcb for radeon cards?

Nvidia announced a price drop on all their cards. The 980 is dropping to 410$ in the US, maybe wait a week or so?
>>

asus strix, msi and sapphire are the best by far

With the price drop, is it worth shelling $270 for a GTX970 over a r9 380?

r9 290 for $200 or gtx 970 for $260?

290.
