It's time for the mainframe general thread! Who here works in mainframe and what do you do? I'm a storage Analyst specialised in Oracle tape and virtual tape libraries.

I suppose I expected too much of /g/, most people here don't have jobs nor any ambition to discover any technology that's not Linux or Android. It's good for me though, the lower the skill availability the more I'm paid.

Here's a video for all you mainframe niggas

Man IBM racks look like trash. I know tape storage has made some bound capacity-wise, but where could it see wide usage? Is retention on magnetic tape OK? My shop uses some retardedly expensive EMC product for retention of shit that's never read nor written to. The only guys I know who did mainframe work know cobalt and shit and are now NOCs while they wait to retire.
>>
>>51544567
you're on /g/
The best you're going to get is a discussion about which LEDs you are going to use in your gaymen build
>>
>>51544567
What are the reasons a mainframe would be used in 2015 as opposed to a group of servers? What specific needs call for mainframes and why are they better in that area as opposed to alternatives?
I suppose I could just google it but I'm trying to foster discussion

Legendary fault tolerance/uptime and IIRC pretty good crypto hardware as well

IBM mainframes are also incredibly backwards compatible, pretty sure new ones are still capable of running S/360 code fully unmodified.

Interesting. I assume enterprise doesn't really care for them much but critical infrastructures are much more likely to continue using them because of specialized computing needs that can not afford error and restructuring

It's been changed to "hiroyuki is the best"

Cool thanks

Tape storage is great for archiving
>>
So how common are mainframes? Like, are they a thing enough where they're built then ordered or are they built to order? Are we talking tens, hundreds, or thousands in operation?
>>
>>51544567
Christ, that looks like something Alienware would design?

That Power 720 is the definition of sexy hardware

They're still a big fixture in the financial sector, pretty much every transaction you make runs through one at some point in the process, likewise with AS/400s in retail.

I don't really know if it still works this way, but for the most part companies don't buy, rather they lease mainframes from IBM and send them back for a new one when it's time to upgrade.

I think it's supposed to represent Eco-friendliness or something, I don't really think it's quite that obnoxious, I find it actually kind of a nice departure from the incredibly boring "minimal" styling that pervades modern technology nowadays.

>>51544567
Don't work in mainframes but kind of work with them as a Linux /UNIX analyst. I can't stand zvm, maybe its because I don't know it all to well. I'd much rather just keep linux on x86 and use vmware. At least they look cool.
