Friendly reminder that when you get a new phone once the novelty feeling wears off its just going to be just like the old one, you will use the same apps and do the same shit.

Your life will feel just as empty after two days as it feels right now.

I'm really liking my Black Berry Priv so far.

The keyboard really helps to make full use of your screen.

And the BB virtual keyboard is not too shabby either. Not as good as swiping but still very comfortable.

Battery is holding up well and the screen is gorgeous.

A word of warning: the wireless charging spot on it is towards the bottom of the phone, so if you have a Samsung wireless fast charger, the Priv will tip over.

Better to get a power mat or one of those wireless charging stands.

I'm looking for a phone with front facing speakers under 5". I migrated from a Moto G 2014 to a 1+1 two months ago but I find myself returning back to the G for the form factor and the front facing speakers, but the 400 it has is just so weak. What phone could fulfill these requirements? I was thinking 1+x, but no front facing speakers. Z3C is too small. I live in Canada.

>>
>>51543757
It's a new british company, headed by the former boss of motorola (iirc).
They just released their first two devices (storm and swift) a few months ago. The latter being more or less a competitor to the moto g.
They also run Cyanogen OS.
The reviews that I've read so far were all impressed and when I saw it for only €155 I decided fuck it, let's just try it out.
>>
>>51543778
zenfone2

its CPU is comparable to snapdragon 8XX and you won't notice any lag really

battery is decent but it shines with a custom ROM like CM and it does have an sd card slot

the $300 model has 4GB of RAM as well

V20B is out for G4 now

>>
>>51543674

I'm the guy with the Priv.

One thing to consider is peripheral/accessories support.

I've come to terms that I will never be able to use a tempered glass screen protector on my Priv because there is not enough demand for it.

I'll probably never get to use cool cases other than the official BB flip case.

As for the battery, after a factory reset and properly configuring my phone it's fine. I can easily get through the day.

And I'm loving the Quick Charge on it. I don't know if the v10 has it.
>>
>>51543801
Huh, I'm struck by curiosity to look them up just to know about them. I just got me a Nexus 6 a few months ago so I'm not planning on getting a new phone but I'm going to track them to see what they come up with. Maybe they'll release something that may convince me to switch over.

I just got a Moto X yesterday (XT1097) and I absolutely loved the phone. I'm coming from a Nexus 5 and I think the Moto X is an improvement in every way except for the camera and ROMs. I also really liked the Motorola Earbuds and the audio quality both from the speakers and earbuds are great. It came with KitKat preinstalled and was manufactured in Brazil.

I managed to connect to 2 WiFi Access Points with a "Fair" signal range before upgrading to Marshmallow. After upgrading to Lollipop, only 1 was being found. After Marshmallow, it worked for a few hours and now the Access Point is gone.
Are there any tips for improving the WiFi antenna?

I am upgrading form a dumb phone that has lasted me a long time, but I want to upgrade to a smart phone. I live in Norway.

I have done some research and I have found that the LG G4 seems like a good choice. Since it has a replaceable battery, will it be a good choice if I don't plan to upgrade for a few years?

I was also kinda interested in the Nexus 6p, but the non replaceable battery turned me off, and no expandable storage. I was also interested in the Galaxy S5, but since its a bit old already I think it might be due to be replaced quite early.
>>
>>51545270

>>
>>51545678
Not really no, samsung's current Exynos 7420 destroyed pretty much every other SoC released this year by a fair margin. It runs cooler, faster, and uses less power.

Even with touchwizz being a bit heavier than stock android, the powerful SoC is more than enough to make it smooth with pretty much everything.

S6/Note5 are the current top tier android devices. The only real downside being no mSD card slot (The S6 however can use the Incipio offGRID case. which adds a 3700mAh battery, and an mSD card slot) And the fact they have a sealed back so you can't fast swap the batteries.

My previous 2 phones both didn't have mSD cards or removable battery, so the Note5 was an easy upgrade for me.

That being said the LG V10 is a perfectly good alternative to the Note5/S6 if you want removable battery and mSD card, however it's SoC is less powerful, it is still decently high end.
>>
>>51545738

>>
>>51545851
No it's like their distro of Android. The bootloader is locked and the only progress made so far is that you can boot into an unofficial CM ROM, and that's pretty much it.
>>
>>51545768
Best out of box android experience I have ever had.

I have had it since a couple days before launch (they shipped it out early). And it has been fantastic ever since.

Never had a hard reset, never had any problems at all really.

>>51545806
The RAM management issue really is over blown though, you will almost NEVER run into it being a problem in your actual use of the device. The ONLY times I can make it happen on my note5 are when I am trying to make it happen (like all those youtube videos out there showing the "problem"). If I want to make my phone reload apps, I can by throwing a ton of apps at it, and sure the 6P might be able to have a couple more apps open before refreshing, both phones are at 8+ apps at that point though.

Who do you personally know who is multitasking between 8+ apps at once? seriously, those comparisons are just stupid.

Though I agree it is a bit of a downside that after market ROM support will pretty much never happen, this is fine with me as the stock ROM has been solid as fuck, but i can see why people would stay clear because of this.

>>51545784
The normal version is better, the edge is just a meme screen, it is less comfortable to hold, makes it so text and images get distorted around the edge, and it costs more for something that gets fairly boring after the first 2-3 weeks.
>>
>>51545866
you can debloat though, touchwiz itself is perfectly fine, just debloat the few apps that you dont want, use nova launcher or whatever and themes to change the look and layout.

No need to root or run custom ROMs.

NOTE5 JUST GOT ANDROID 6 UPDATE!!!
>>
>>51546010

The only glaring issue that is an actual big deal is the problem with SD cards.

It has trouble dealing with cards larger than 32GB. I have a 128 GB card and I can't write/move files on it.

It's a well know problem that many have been complaining about.

BlackBerry says that it is aware of it and has developed a fix but has not released it yet.

Outside of that no real problems that matter.

One that blackberry fans complain about is the buggy Hub app, but I have never used that shit before and have zero intention of touching it.

It seems like a completely redundant application in Android.

For short, quick sms style replies the Virtual Key board wins easily.

For long paragraphs/emails the physical keyboard is comfortable. I like it, but some people may not.

But the fact that when you pop out the keyboard you get a full view of the screen is awesome and so comfortable.

And remember that the physical keyboard is also an extra touch input device. You can scroll inside apps by just swiping on the actual physical keyboard itself. It's a nice feature when browsing the web.

S6 active, sucks it's only on AT&T. but it has a 3500mAh battery and Exynos 7420, the most powerful SoC available at the moment for android.

Moto x force has SD810 which means it will be hot, even with good cooling its hard to dissipate that much heat. The moto x force also has a 3760 mAh battery, slightly larger than the S6 active, but when you include the more power hungry SoC in the Moto x force, it is a toss up which would get longer battery life.

I'm looking for a new phone by this summer, but can't decide, though I don't need much.

All I really need it for is social media, multimedia, and I like to travel and take pictures of things. No games. All I really need is something with a good camera (front and back), sd card slot and unlocked for carriers in other countries.

Wanted a V10 but that seems total overkill for what I need. Thinking LG G3 but I'm not sure. Anyone have a situation like that and a recommendation? Coming from a Moto G by the way.

Typically not all phones support shooting RAW, which is the image before it gets processed. Some sensors take really shit RAW images but get processed into decent ones. I don't remember if the G4 or V10 support shooting in RAW but if they do than it wouldn't matter which one you got.

I like everything about the phone, but the memes are concerning
>>
>>51547926
>The V10 shits all over the Galassy Note 5
Except in specs... like most of them actually.

RAM, sure they both have 4GB, but V10 is using LPDDR3 whereas the Note5 uses LPDDR4.

Internal storage, sure both have either 32GB or 64GB, but the V10 uses eMMC memory whereas the note5 uses USF 2.0, which is much faster.

Digitizer, this is an easy one as the V10 doesnt have one.

screen, both are 5.7" 1440p. But the AMOLED display on the note5 is the best display ever tested by Displaymate, and beats all other current LCD panels.

SoC, V10 has the SD808 built on a 20nm process, a 6 core SoC (2x A57 and 4x A53) paired with Adreno 418 graphics. The note5 has Exynos 7420, which is built on a 14nm process, and is an 8 core SoC (4x A57 and 4x A53) with the Mali T760MP8 graphics (the Adreno 418 is 15-20% less powerful) Oh and to top it off, the Exynos 7420 actually ends up using less power than the SD808 because it was built on a lower process node.

I could keep going but I think you get my point

The V10 is a fine phone, but to say it "shits all over the note5" is just pure bollocks.

100% of phones where I live are on a 2 year contract in my part of Canada. It is the same monthly usage fee if you are on contract or off.

Your own jailbroken phone you bought online: $65/month

New phone udner contract: $65/month

There is more or less one package offered and all companies (virgin, Telus, Rogers, etc) are subcontract from the same local phone provider. They are actually all the same company where I live. Same speed, same tower, same price.

The government just lets them use their own names to pretend we have competition and options when it comes to service providers here.

I picked up one of the $10 Moto E from Best Buy. I had a $10 reward certificate so it was basically free. I figured it would be a good backup phone and I'm just kind of interested to see what budget phones are like right now.

I have an S6 but I leave it in power saving mode most of the time, I'm curious to see if the Moto E is noticeably slower than the S6 in power saving mode. If it is pretty close, I'd probably only buy budget phones from now on. I'm thinking the 1GB of RAM is going to be the biggest bottleneck.

So I'm looking to upgrade my nexus 4, and I came across a deal to get a refurbed nexus 5 16gb for 170 or 32gb for 180. I'm wondering if anyone who's had the n5 could tell me whether they think it's worth it. Bearing in mind that the only reason I want to replace my n4 is because the battery is crapping out and I'm starting to get some annoying bugs after having it for a few years now.

Anyone know of any better deals for relatively close to the price for performance I'd get here, or should I just go for it. My upper limit for price would be around 300 at the max, but the lower I can go without too much sacrifice the better.
>>
>>51549646

>>51549850
The one I have is also old enough at this point that I'm running into some annoying bugs and such, so I want a different phone either way. I'm just trying to figure out if this deal I've found is the best thing I can find in my budget range or if someone else has found something I missed. So the question I was actually asking you was, if your biggest reason for me not to get the nexus 5 is the battery, is the battery life of the nexus 5 worse than that of the nexus 4 in a meaningful way? Because if it isn't then that's not going to bother me.

USA's fault for not having any of the ITU global bands, but special shit. I do not know why your phone operators did that.

The phones support almost all global ITU bands for FDD-LTE (1,3,7 usually, only not 28), TDD-LTE (38,40), or for new models like the Mi4c BOTH of these.

That is comparatively heavy, but the phones generally have plenty of RAM and processing power (mi4i has annoyed some people with much bloated social media apps and games, I guess).

If you don't like it, use some other ROM, cyanogenmod or derivatives or whatever. It's easy to flash whatever you come across, stock recovery works, TWRP / CWM are usually available, no locks.

Personally, I like MIUI and would also put it on other devices (MIUI is open sauce and supports many devices) if I switched away from Xiaomi.

correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the Rednote 2 come with the HelioX10 SoC, right? no phone has gotten root or unlocked the bootloader with this chip, Mediatek and the companies themselves have not provided the keys and necessary data to start making ROMs for this or any HelioX10 device

For illustration purposes, here's the list of 3rd party ROMs for the Mi4i collected on the MIUI forums: http://en.miui.com/thread-138587-1-1.html

>By my standard, yes performance is quite poor. Compared to flagships like 6p, V10, G4, Z5, it's performance is quite poor.
They also score like 50-60k on Antutu. The Redmi Note 2 however is a $160 phone.

> Let me know when you have 6.0.
I have MIUI 7. Could have Android 6 on Cyanogenmod beta or something, but I'll wait until MIUI is ported - it has far more features than base Android anyways.

> Oh please. If other OEM's can (even dirt poor ones like One Plus) support USA's bands, other richer OEM's like Xiaomi have no excuse.
The USA actually has no excuse for not supporting ITU global bands. It's a "shamefuru dispray", like much of your infrastructure.

Xiaomi might sell in the USA at some point, and they'll adapt phones then - sure. But they went with "Asia first", and mostly on global bands, and it got them to number 3 phone vendor - so actually, they don't have much reason to care. Prospective buyers do.

Yes, Helio X10. You can root it and install a different recovery. Google.

Various custom ROMs also happened. The ones I see on the miui forums are based on MIUI (which is an open sauce project), but maybe there are others. Didn't check much otherwise yet - as I said, I'm only really interested in MIUI anyways.

Real world performance is more than fine enough. Seriously, what are you going to do that requires more processing power than a eight core Helio X10 or six core Snapdragon 808 has?

Also, actually for a lot of tasks, benchmark suites *do* translate to real world performance.

> You could, but you're then relying on sandniggers from XDA instead of trained professionals employed by Google.
Yea, whatever. You're actually using work by both...

> Why should we care for global bands when our system works just fine?
Lel, your system evidently doesn't work fine if you can't even use the nice phones from the 3rd largest manufacturer in the world.

You're amongst the very few nations in the world who don't have either bands 3 or 7 for FDD-LTE or 40 for TDD-LTE, or any of the other global bands. It's about as bad with imperial units.

Aside from video games, no this is not true at all. Their are other variables to consider, such as throttling rates and encryption protocols.

They're new ARMv8-based designs, they have encryption / h.265 / ... optimizations. And they do throttle fine.

Surely so. Hype might happen once adapted Xiaomi's are in Walmarts and T-mobile / AT&T stores, but basically all plebs don't know right now. /g/ knows in advance, eh.

The well-informedness or absence thereof of plebs isn't too relevant though - this was a *big* fuck-up by your FCC and/or providers, regardless whether plebs know it.

It is just stupid (though not devastatingly so) to be the lonely technology island for something like this when everyone else right to Africa and Asia manages to do better.

I just want to change the wallpaper, but nova launcher is very different since I last used it and can't have it's own wallpaper, so now when I set a wallpaper for nova it applies to the lock screen as well.

You can find smartphones with HDMI out too: http://www.phonerated.com/hdmi_phones-listbycat

But they're not as many, and I wonder how many of those will nicely run Debian...?

Maybe you can also carry a small Miracast ("HDMI over WLAN") adapter and use one of the quite many smartphones that have Miracast support? Again not sure about Debian support anyways...
