Stupid Questions thread: can't be fucked to dig up the copypasta edition. Ask only once, not entitled to an answer, blah blah blah.

I'm looking to get just a little bit more RAM since it's cheaper and I don't really need much more. Would buying just a single stick with the same timings and speeds fuck up my two existing, dual channel sticks in any way?

I'm thinking of putting a really low-power server (Sun Fire V100, the x3250 is just being stored there right now) in this empty space in my desk, however the only opening for air when the door is closed other than the space around it is the hole in the bottom for cables.

I'm planning on using the system as a basic web server (raw HTML/CSS only) and ssh box, is it safe? I don't really have the proper tools to drill out some vent holes in the back.

I know how to create a bootable installer on usb flash drives using an ISO file. I've done that with Linux distributions a million times. My question is: Can I install an operating system TO a usb flash drive?

I'm interested in playing with OpenBSD, but they don't use GRUB and setting up dual booting to work with it is a bit of a hassle for a beginner. Since I'm new to OpenBSD, I rather just install the OS to a flash drive and boot from it that way. Again, I'm not talking about putting the installer on a flash drive. I'm talking about the fully installed OS on a flash drive.

If my understanding is correct, during the installation I would just select the USB drive like it were any old hard disk. Is this correct? Is there any other special setup I need to be aware of?

Why do torrents eat up bandwidth so much?

For example, on a good day with good torrents I can get about 2 mb/s downloads. While do that I can still browse the web but it is super slow, videos are out of the question, even loading large images on 4chan take a while. If I don't run torrents I can stream HD and such no worries.

Now I also have 4 or 5 torrents with few seeders, all big at over 200GB each, but they download at like<30kb/s each and have usually on 3 or 4 peers active at a time each. So running just them means I'm only downloading about 100-150 kb/s, yet I get the same problems as I would downloading torrents at 2mb/s, that being super slow speeds and that.

What gives, I surely have spare bandwidth avalible.Does tranmission-qt allocate itself all the priority for speed or something? it's extremely frustrating because I can't just let these big run 24/7, any time I want to use the net I have to pause them regardless of how fast they download (they do occasionally get good seeds but they still will take 40 days+ each to finish).

>>
>>51550217
>>51549599
It's because of your bandwidth, not necessarily because of your down/up speed.

Right now your torrent program is saturating your download and upload, it does this because it establishes many connections, maybe even to the same peers you're connected to. So while you see 3 or 4 peers, you actually have 30 or 40 active connections to them, each.

You can fix this by going into your torrent settings and adjusting the maximum and minimum connections settings. You can try playing around with max and min peers as well.

If it's network-wide:
Do you have an old junk shitbox with Windows XP or something installed on it?
If so, connect it somewhere, put AutoHotKey on it, and be done.

600 is recommended min for that card. You could probably skate by on 550. Any lower than that and you're risking not being able to put out enough power.

Even if you see a graph that shows "oh this config never pulls over 400 watts" a PSU is like a car engine, just because it can hit a top speed of 120MPH its still the most efficient at 65mph. PSUs are similar in that they are most efficient well below what they're capable of outputting at peak.

750w should be enough to xfire as long as you don't have a shitload of other peripherals (HDD, wifi card, sound card, etc). I wouldn't recommend it though, xfire doesn't work with all games as well as you'd hope and getting everything configured correctly usually takes some time, not to mention how much more power you'll use and increased noise/heat.

I can't see any reason that board wouldn't hold two GPU from the photo you provided.

>>51550145
Probably. Though you might be able to mount the single partition and install programs from a different OS on it, it will work better to have a second partition for that OS specifically. Doing otherwise is veering into sorcery/witchcraft that might cause bizzare problems with no real gain, especially since extending/shrinking partitions is a trivially easy operation to do.
>>
>>51551120
Try using a distro that isn't NOOBs. It's kinda buggy at times. When I got my Pi1 I couldn't get NOOBs to work for like 3 months, until a day I tried and it just werked.

nvm problem sold, turns out the "Done." is just fucking random and has nothing to do with tripcodes being generated.

Two questions - one dumb, one vague. You choose which is which.

1) Do we know what's happening with Z1170 chipset Xeons (aka Purley)? Is it confirmed if it'll be dual-channel RAM or quad-channel? Finding it difficult to justify building a system on Z1170 without knowing about the Xeon space.

2) Do 390X fully use PCIe x16? I remember talk a while ago of AMD not being running x16, and it running x8, but can't recall if that was AMD APUs, AMD CPU controlling GPUs, or AMD GPUs. I'm tired so if someone could clarify it would be appreciated.
>>
>>51551193
2) If I'm not wrong, AMD CPUs don't completely support PCIe 3.0, so it wouldn't work at full speed. AMD GPUs are full PCIe 3.0 x16 tho.

Thank you for your time.
>>
>>51551899
Depends on the game. You may struggle with games like FO4 even on lowest settings. But it would be fine for other games.
>>
>>51551865
I do a check in defraggler once a week and if it's aboe about 20% I defrag. Note it will reduce the life of your HDD if you do it too often since it basically reshuffles (delete and write) the whole drive and having it fragmented a bit is not a problem. Unless you are constantly creating and deleting lots of files you probably won't need to do it often. I download and shift tons of torrents and that so I do it a bit.

Also do not defrag a SSD. You defrag HDD's because they are essentially like a vinyl record, the needle has to seek data on the record and if it's fragmented it has to skip all over the place to find it. SSDs don't have moving parts and it doesn't matter if the data is scattered over the place, it's all the same. defragging will just reduce the life of the drive.

There isn't a black or white answer, it all depends on the developers, some games are efficient on the gpu but high on the cpu, others the other way around. Some are even not too high on both but require lots of vram. Other games shouldn't require jack shit but will always run like ass because of hack developers.

the difference between a decent sata ssd and a top of the line nvme m.2/pci ssd isn't all that much for regular desktop use

ssds excel reading and writing to a metric fuckton of files at the same time, while this helps with loading operating systems and games and other things like that, the limiting factors of cpu speed and how fast that data is processed and stored in ram are still there so the difference between 500MB/s disk bandwidth and 2500MB/s disk bandwidth aren't going to be seen, but if you want an nvme m.2/pcie ssd and are using it as storage for a dozen vms then yeah, it's going to be a massive improvement

whenever I search for mid end gpu models there's several brands available (asus, msi, evga).

Do they differ much in quality?
Is it always better to get the one with dual cooling fans?
Is it really important that I make a 'good pairing' with a mobo?

My laptop runs pretty good like 90% of the time, but after getting through doing something like playing a game it for some reason has the hardest time doing shit.
For example, I was playing Fallout 4 earlier. When I quit playing, I opened up a browser from the desktop. While the browser was pulled up immediately it took roughly 5 minutes before it would load a webpage.
The computer itself didn't lock up, just for some reason it had a really hard time loading up webpages.

Any clue as to what could be causing this and how I can fix it?

Apologies in advance for the extremely dumb question, I'm just quite curious.

Is there any damage to be done to a laptop by playing games on it? I was given a work laptop and it could probably get away with playing games from around 2007-2009. I'm just afraid of things like the temperature going too high as I've examined the laptop and it doesn't have brilliant ventilation.

Does the difference between 1866Mhz or 2400Mhz RAM matter much?
I currently have 8GB 1600Mhz RAM, and I sometimes need a bit more (sometimes run a VM as an extra PC at LAN parties).

I'm currently looking at either
http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/408773/kingston-hyperx-beast-hx324c11t3k2-16.html
or
http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/377503/kingston-hyperx-fury-white-hx318c10fwk2-16.html

I like the white one because I am a huge faggot who likes to look at the insides of his case, and like Kingston because I've always used them and had no issues them so far.

Both RAM sets will fit fine in my PC.

I'm kinda looking into upgrading my RAM speed since the Techspot article on Fallout 4 RAM speeds:
http://www.techspot.com/review/1089-fallout-4-benchmarks/page6.html
Pretty drastic difference there between 1333 and 2400, was wondering is there's also a difference between 1866 and 2400
>>
>>51558902
it's a pretty linear curve as far as the increases in performance for fallout 4
then again it's a shit game that's optimized like shit and not worth playing at all so I wouldn't worry about it
>>
>>51558931
Would the 1,5v vs 1,65v difference matter much?
Also, the 1866 one has a better CL (10 vs 11), though I think the faster speed of the 2400 one offsets that again, right?
>>
>>51558955
hard to say, I think the difference between having lower latency but slower speed and vice versa doesn't make too much of a difference
it's just that the shitty engine is so outdated that it can't stream textures well unless your ram is fast
I have an r9 290 and a i5 4670k and with tesselation forced off, god rays off and setting mostly on medium the framerate tanks to like 20 in areas with a lot of buildings and it's basically just because my ram is 1333

You said "display". Does it play? It may simply be that the file doesn't have metadata or is designed to be played with an attached .cue file? (Maybe transcode it into a FLAC if that's handier. They're both lossless, so that's safe.)

Difference is probably warranty. WD Black are their high-end consumer range with a longer warrenty. Seagate I think chopped their warranty down to 1 year?

I've had bad luck with all models of hard drives - failures cluster, so it's hard to get good data - but the best data I've seen from Google and Backblaze is that Seagate has a notably higher failure rate.

Worse, Backblaze tested that exact drive: ST3000DM001, the 3TB Barracuda 7200.14 - and it had an annual failure rate of 26.65% - the highest in the chart! I'd steer clear of that particular model if I were you. https://www.backblaze.com/blog/best-hard-drive/

If you've got malware that even Malwarebytes can't remove well, then you're probably beyond safe meaningful recovery. Back up everything - absolutely everything - that you need to save (try to avoid backing up any executables, in case of file infectors, it can happen), check that backup is definitely good, and then do a clean reinstall from known good media, wiping everything and then restoring from your backup.

If you really don't want to do that right now, back up what you need to do and start digging manually with HiJackThis or something - but have install media ready, for if it fucks up, because that is high-risk, especially if you're inexperienced.

Alright, I know this is really dumb, but I just want to be sure. I haven't built my own computer in forever, so my memory is all foggy.

I bought this computer used about a month ago, as it's better than my old custom-built Core 2 Duo machine from back in 2008. Today I upgraded the ram, I added an 8GB stick (2 + 2 + 8 for 12GB total) and while I had the case open I took these pictures.

The GTX 8800 is ancient. I've found that It's actually worse than the Radeon HD 4850 that is in my old C2D computer and I plan on upgrading to a GTX 950, which I'm going to buy as early as today or tomorrow depending on when my money comes in.

Here's the question, you see the power cables that go directly to the GTX 8800 in the picture I uploaded? Is it the same as the connectors that I will find on a new GTX 950? Do I need an adapter? I'm not worried about the PSU not being able to handle it, from what I've read, the GTX 950 has less power consumption than the GTX 8800. It's a 500watt psu

Is there a way to disable certain keys on my keyboard? It has buttons for sleep and power and such and I don't want to accidentally hit them.
>>
>>51562244

are you on a desktop or a laptop? Personally speaking, I wouldn't disable laptop keys, but if you want to then more power to you.

Either way, your prebuilt came with bundled software that enables that in the first place. You can delete such software and those buttons will do nothing.

Alternatively, there are registry edits you can do to disable keys, but you're going to have to google that to find out how to do it in your specific scenario.
>>
>>51562324
Desktop, yeah.
>prebuilt
No, not a prebuilt. I had to dig out an old leftover keyboard after mine died and it has these keys that are annoying. I like the pause and mute buttons but those ones, not so much.
>>
>>51562358

That's weird. I have an old keyboard too with sleep and media buttons too and they do nothing because I never installed the official drivers for them, the keyboard just functions as a keyboard because of drivers that Windows 7 applied to it automatically.
>>
>>51561524
Depends on which model of 950 you get, some take 6 pin other take 8, but the ones that that take 8 pin should come with a 6 pin to 8 pin adapter
>>
>>51562513

Ah, so my 8800 GTX takes two 6pin, right? Would the 6pin model of the GTX 950 take two 6pins exactly like the 8800GTX or just one? I'll definitely keep this in mind and be sure I have an 8pin adapter if I need it.
>>
>>51562571
yes they're the same type of 6 pin connectors
>>
>>51562636
