Seeing as I don't even have a full desktop with me in uni I use my laptop more.

Looking to build a mini ITX rig to fit in my room next year. Something I can throw in my bag when I visit my parents and just plug into power and peripherals no problem.

I've taken my laptop to a class twice in two years. And one of those times I didn't even use it. Other than that it stays in my room.

this. i've had literally zero reason to actually use my laptop in class in the 3 years of my EE degree. they have computers labs all around the university for a fucking reason. if you have more than a small desktop in your room and a chromebook that stays in your bag 24/7, you fucked up.

I was considering getting one. I don't care about its fame or infamy, I have ogre hands and the hand-eye coordination of a drunken monkey with Parkinson's. I need something that can withstand rough handling without having shit for specs.

got an x230 for $200. performance is plenty since i'm not gaming or doing video editing, and the battery is 3-4 hrs on xubuntu. the size is perfect for me, the keyboard is the nicest laptop keyboard i've used, and it's plenty light. (I'm coming from the shittiest $400 15.6 inch, 5 lb laptops tho, so YMMV)

It's been real good for me thus far. If you want something lighter or thinner or more powerful, you can certainly get them, but for me, it was an amazing balance of price/power/form factor.

Why do you need the mobility?

i literally couldn't touch a thinkpad because they all smell. fucking all of them have SOME sort of smell on them. i can't deal with smells at all, let alone the entire time i'm on my computer. fuck that x1000. i'd be happier using a $100 chromebook or just my desktop.

The only reason I need a laptop now is because I have to meet up with others for groupwork.

Because I'm home for about 2 hours after I wake up. Then at my business for about three. Then I calmly have my lunch somewhere downtown, where having a laptop to get things done while chilling would help a lot. After that, I take a 40 minutes trip to the neighboring town to check how the other branch is doing, wrap everything up in a couple hours, and return home to have a quick shower and go to my university finish my MBA. Couple hours later, I'm back home with a little free time before I go to bed and start the cycle again.

Short version: I'm all over the place, all the fucking time. Having one desktop at each place only makes it easy to lose files and get confused.

You're taking notes, building some code (and your edit/build/run cycle for most things you'll do in uni is so short that the desktop's speed doesn't really matter), maybe writing a paper. Maybe taking notes with it, but paper's supposed to be better.

You can use the school machines, but I'd laugh my face off if someone had a USB keylogger or something jammed into a couple.

I took my desktop to uni, also I bought a printer/scanner. I just make notes on paper and then scan them onto Google drive at the end of each day. I have a laptop but I haven't used it in months.

Universities trashes gold thanks to our scholar fees. You can find decent stuff passing through the garbage.

I have a Surface Pro 3 for working away from home and the office and playing OSU! everything else is done on desktops though my T420 is sitting in a drawer ready to receive a second 2tb which is updated weekly with essential material in case SHTF.

I built my pc when I started uni cos muh grants, and lived pretty far away but still didn't see the need for a laptop.

Now I just bought a laptop/tablet hybrid because it was damn cheap and wanted something kinda fun. I just take it to do some programming and write reports when I have time between classes. Also 8.9" porn tablet is great.
Made me realise you don't need more than a 1.33-1.8ghz atom and 2gb ram to get through most uni courses, and I do engineering which means simulations and programming on top of writing shit reports.

The money I spent on my phone, pc build and hybrid total to less than what some of my friends spent buying an apple fagbook, and I thought I was spending too much on tech.
