Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight

Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Does anyone know if the Power Manager works on Windows 8.1?
>>
>>51534326
You can run the installer in Windows 7 compatibility mode, I managed to set battery thresholds on my X220 so at least that works.
>>
Anyone know the fastest processor I could put in a W520?
>>
Would an X61 work decently as a drawing tablet in the same sort of idea as a Surface/Cintiq?

I'm sure it doesn't have the sensitivity of them, but would it work at least semi decently?
>>
>>51535812
It's pretty good.
>>
Got a new Thinkpad with DOS, installed win7 on it a few min ago.

Now i need the drivers, on the lenovo homepage there are single drivers and there is also a "SCCM Package". Can anybody tell me how to install this shit? When donwload was finished it was a .exe and i installed it on my thinkpad, but there where no fucking driver installed? WTF. What to do?
>>
>>51536017
So delay shouldn't be a big issue either, would it?
>>
>>51536442
You'll quickly get used to it. It's not much different from a Surface or iPad Pro and very close to a Wacom Cintiq. Delay/Lag is a non-issue with brushes smaller than 40px.
What could be an issue is parallax (cursor deviation) especially at the edges.
>>
>>51536511
I just used those as a simple comparison.

Really, my only point of reference would be from the WiiU/3DS's touchscreens.

As for problems near the edges, wouldn't it make sense to just move the area your focusing on into the center anyway(aside from sketching or larger stuff)?
>>
>>51536546
There's no comparison with 3DS/WiiU touchscreens, these digitizers are completely different in the way they operate. The deviation issue isn't too bad because the cursor appears when your pen is hovering about 2cm above the screen, which helps with positioning the cursor.
But yeah, the X61t is perfectly adequate for sketching, parallax has less of an effect when you're doing quicker and longer strokes.
>>
What's your opinion on Lenovo System Update?
Seems pretty handy and I use it to avoid having to manually install all the drivers. Is there anything shady about that I don't know of?
>>
I'm looking for a thinkpad, but it actually needs to be decently priced and capable of running adobe suite decently which I guess is a hard thing to achieve as I'm not made of money.

What would anyone recommend in terms of thinkpads, I'm s little swamped in terms of how many different models there are.

>>
Has any progress been made in retrofitting the T420 with an Ivy Bridge processor?
>>
>>51497823
>It's cheaper and a 2nd gen i5 is comparable in performance to a broadwell (i5-5200u) one

This is sort of a blessing in disguise for those of us with older machines. The i7-2720QM in my W520 will kick the living shit out of the i5-5200u in my work-issued T450, despite the fact that the latter has a 5-year advantage. And software developers are aware of this, so more than ever older computers remain usable long into the future. My mother is still on a T60 which is more than adequate enough for daily internet tasks, despite being 9 years old. The reason being is it's probably more powerful than the average cell phone that everyone's fawning over now.

At the same time this trend is sort of pathetic. A Tx10 will yield about the same performance as a Tx50 unit. So when you upgrade in a few years, you're basically going back to square one.

>>51534555
The 2920XM. You *can* put in even faster processors, but you would need to upgrade the stock heatsink, which would mean doing some of your own Frankenstein engineering. Either way you'd be an idiot to put in anything more than a 2820QM or even a 2760QM, because the performance gains of anything beyond those are negligible, despite a very large price premium.
>>
>>51537402

Something that won't get fucked if I drop it and that can run adobe suite well, multiple applications and stuff.
>>
>>51534157
I need a long battery life ThinkPad with 8GB of RAM and an SSD for school. I want at least 2GHz Sandy or better. No 5##, no #40. Also, cheap as fuck. wat do?
>>
>>51537780
>i5
>at least 8gigs

Theyre built like tanks and quite powerful and at the end of the day up-gradable.
Eventually you can slap an i7 on that bitch
>>
>tfw just upgraded my X220 Tablet (i5/8GB) with an SSD.
Feels fast man.

I fucking love it now, except for the 1366x768 screen which is a gigantic disappointment. May even be so bad I'll get a different laptop before this one becomes obsolete.
>>
Has Lenovo discontinued their Thinkpad tablets or something? I cannot find anything after the X230 tablet, and even then they're extremely uncommon compared to the older X220t.

>>
>>51538606
Good laptop if you can find it for a good price. Only get it if you need the better iGPU over the T420 though, as the T420 is a goof $100-$200 cheaper.
>>
>>51538372
The ThinkPad Twist took over that after the X230 Tablet, and now we have the ThinkPad Helix and Yoga, which are not nearly as good.
>>
>>51540555
X220 battery life is not really that great, even with a brand new 9cell, I had trouble getting more than 6 hours programming/moderate usage. I also purchased a slice battery, which bumped that up to 10-12 hours, but the slice is a pain in the ass, it makes the laptop super heavy, and wobble around a lot when I pick it up.
>>
>>51534326
Yeah youll have to do compatibility mode to make it work

T430, X140e, E431, and 11e worked for me when I had them. X1 Carbon 3 didn't want to work...

>>51539102
Unless you are going to consider showing a source or guide, it is not easy.
afaik its nearly impossible, and if it wasn't /g/ would be all over it.

also I don't believe its possible using the same digitizer, its pretty much fubar once its removed.

>>51539245
true, there is the ThinkPad Twist but then again its just an ultrabook with a swivel display, unsure of its toughness compared to X series, my S230 didn't seem that bad but not X61T/200T levels.

>>51539656
I like the E63xx series, the E6420 and later are just fuckton hueg.

>>51536442
I didn't feel much delay but I was using the first version of Photoshop CS on my X61T. But it was a bit slow when it came to using inkscape when I did my ThinkPad timeline.
>>
>>51537780
A lot of laptops can take a drop, so it depends how hard it falls... but SSD is really what matter and being careful, otherwise you'd want a toughbook /getac/XFR Latitude and I know you won't be able to afford that.
>>
Are there any real differences between x250 and t450s other than screen size?
>>
fuck me. my x220 hdd broke and i dont have any of those thin 2.5" disks spare
>>
>>51541351
Pretty much that, both are similar spec'd, I think the T450s may have some discrete graphic options and the x250 is only intel HD gfx only.

Well, you see, first they have to fold your order up into a plane and catapult it over to ChingChong province, then they ahve to paisntakingly assemble it from fresh components, then they have to chop down the trees, mulch them, bleach them and extrude the card to make the box, then they need to load it into a pedalo and pedal over the Pacific to deliver it, they need to do this 2 or 3 times because being Chinese they will almost certainly try and sneak it past customs a few times and get turned around...

Seriously Lenovo is a fucking joke. I deal with them at work and getting anything delivered is a gargantuan pain in the arse.

>>
>>51542787
People say it is a bad resolution, but I am fine with it on my X220 and X230. For the small screen, it actually has a fairly OK pixel density, and the aspect ratio is good for Chinese cartoons and programming etc.

If you are looking for something larger though, like a T420 or T430, 1366x768 is a pretty rough ride, although not unbearable.

>>51546939
X220 is a good machine, don't be so quick to rule it out. As for the T420s, I would stay away, the battery is smaller, and therefore runtime is decreased, and the slimmed down form factor means it gets warmer too. The classic T420 is where it is at.

Also, the best most definite way to get the screen resolution is asking the seller, but most machines with the higher end parts (i7s, Nvidia GPU) will also have the higher resolution screen. There is always a chance though, so I would not risk it.
>>
>>51547489
/g/ will shit on the X250, but in all honesty it is a pretty great machine, good battery life, fast parts, with lots of options and cool features, and you can buy it new.

But if you are looking for something like the X220, your only real option is the X220.
>>
>>51547844

I have a e6510 and had e6430 and the 510 was a lot bigger than the 430.
plus they have those fuck huge coolers that are pretty damn good at keeping them cool (much better than the t410 or 420.
>>
>>51548520
X series has soldered CPUs, you can't upgrade them short of completely replacing the motherboard. T420 is your best bet for upgradability, especially now that we're starting to see BIOS mods that allow the usage of Ivy Bridge processors and up to 1866mhz RAM. Once things are further along and problems are hammered out it's going to be a very good time to be a T420 owner.
>>
>>51548390
Honestly thats not a bad deal, they are normally worth 60 - 120 depending on condition on eBay and locally.

>>51548375
You know its just you and some other dude.
Did you try anti-x?
If anything I think you would get better help from the TP Forum.

>>51548520
I don't know the development for that bios on the T420 but the X220, X series and 's' or slim models all have soldiered CPUs on their motherboard so you would have to do a mobo swap rather than a CPU swap, pain in the ass and costly.

>>51548555
I don't have much experience with Dell laptops to really say much about them other then setting them up for sell for maximum profit, but I am a bit bias/fanboy to ThinkPads.

What kind of specs can you get with a t61? I want to mod my t420, but I imagine the t61 is just too old to be of real use.
>>
>>51548915
Specwise T420 is far superior than the T61
Build wise its the otherway around, formfactor, keyboard feel, modding, the T61 has been much better.

A T430 will still be a better performer than the T420. Honestly the keyboard feel/layout differences is minimal from those two, if I want a good keyboard I'll type with my X300, A31p or T43p.

Then there's the whole security angle, if you care about that sort of thing. Your fingerprint doesn't require your consent.

You don't trust lelnovo, especially not after all the malware shit they got busted for in their consumer lines. I know Thinkpads were never affected, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen at all. New Thinkpads are generally not worth the money anyway unless you're getting some hueg student/EPP discounts. Around these parts we buy old used Thinkpads because that's where the value, the build quality, and the good design is to be had. Lelnovo has been steadily ruining the brand ever since they first bought it, they just kicked it into overdrive as of late.

there are still some good deals to be had on ebay for t420s
>>
I've been thinking about getting an x220 and I had some questions.

1. What's the max amount of ram I could use in it? Official specs seem to say 8GB, but some people are saying that 16GB is possible. I don't really need 16GB for my use case, but I'd like to have the option in the future, if needed.

2. What kind of battery life could I expect with a 6 cell or a 9 cell battery while web browsing/video watching/ programming? On my current laptop (a MacBook air) I can easily get about 8-12 hours, so I was wondering how an x220 would compare.

Has anybody gotten one of those LVDS to eDP converters to install a T440 IPS panel on their T420? Is there any way to get one of those outside TPforums or 51nb?

pic related is the IPS panel on the right compared to TN 1600x9000 panel on the left

What's a good, cheap thinkpad for linux mobile and web development?
>>
>>51564078
What's funny about this is that 4-5 years ago, everyone was bitching and complaining that the Tx20 was the end of the Thinkpad as we knew it, and we should all just stick with our T61s. In other words, essentially the exact same thing that you're saying. Now look at how the tables have turned... we can't get our T420s fast enough.

/g/ will always be addicted to the Thinkpad meme so long as /g/ exists. Just watch, four to five years from now everyone is going to be shilling the T450.
>>
>>51566139
The only games you're going to be playing are TF2 at 1366x768 and maybe some Minecraft. If kids these days still play Brood War, then that too.

The T420 is really, really not a gaming machine. No Thinkpad is. Just spend $500 on some poorfag-tier desktop if you want to do some light gaming.

I just picked up

- T60 with Core 2 Duo T2500
- T60 with Core 2 Duo T7200
- X200 with Core 2 Duo P8600

for $55 total. I've got a pretty good handle on what I'll need RAM and SSD-wise, but am a bit unclear on if/how I can upgrade the processors.

I do see that Core 2 Duos look bretty cheap on ebay so upgrading looks attractive. I haven't opened up the thinkpads yet other than to max out the ram in the T7200.

What are the fastest processors I can drop in these and expect them to "just werk"? Ideally with no ACPI trickery/ custom kernels as I may give these away to family members and I'd rather they not brick on dist-upgrade. I am capable of one time-mods including soldering/dremel usage etc.

If you need more info as to the specific model I can link the ebay auctions I got them from.
>>
X200 processor can't be swapped because it's soldered. Not sure about the others.
>>
>>51566789

Ok, cool. Internet research seems to suggest the fastest processors I can put in and expect to work out of the box are T7200, T7400, T7600.

I have a t7250 that I pulled from an xps 1530 with a dead GPU, anyone feel like screaming "NO!!!" at me before I try to see if it fits in the t2500's socket?

Was looking for a converter last night but couldn't find one. Ended up just posting on the TP forums to be put on the wait list for their next batch.

I'm curious though if it matters what your current resolution is before converting to the ips later on. Is it okay if I just go with the 1366x768? Will it be as simple to convert later on?

Basically mint condition Lenovo X220:

IPS screen
Core i5 2.60Ghz 2nd gen
8GB DDR3 Dual Channel Ram
320 7200 RPM HDD (will install a ssd later)
9-CELL High Capacity battery
fresh Windows 7pro 64bit

got it for $220

Did I do alright /g/?
>>

Auction or Buy It Now?

Anyway you did pretty well, Anon.
>>
>>51567203

Okay, got the keyboard off and things looked kind of messy with the heatpipes and whatnot, and the ifixit guide didn't cover CPU replacement so I'd be flying blind/relying on shaky youtube videos so I closed it up for now. No point tempting fate with a cpu that *might* not work anyways. I ordered a t7200 on ebay since they were only $4 shipped.

Between the t7200/t7400/t7600 the prices were $4/$18/$40 for 2.00 GHz/2.16GHz/2.33 GHz respectively, so I just went for the cheapest option. If someone posts some impressive graphs or something maybe I'll reconsider.

Anyone else here still rocking a T60? What kind of CPU and SSD/HDD do you have? Interested in any general T60 bantz

I went even further to pm one of those guys on 51nb who made one of those threads (in chinese of course), asked him whether he has a shop on taobao or something or if there's some website to order them from.

Apart from that I've also messaged some guy on TPforums who helped sell some of those inverters over ebay on who he asked on 51nb to supply them

Will post any info if I get any replies

I'm just waiting on his reply now

Wiki says that's the only screen option.

>>51570260
Is that an X220 or T420? Not a great price either way, but only really awful if you got a T420 with the worse screen option. You overpaid close to $100 if that's the case.
>>
>>51570465
That's not what the guide says.
>>
>>51570476
If you're talking about the T420s for slim edition then it's the only option

Otherwise for the regular T420 it's usually in 1366x768 or 1600x900
>>
>>51570476
The guide isn't totally accurate and just what it says it is, a guide so you don't go full retard and extremely overpay. The T420 is going dirt cheap these days. I just snagged a T420s for my buddy for $135 shipped, and that was BIN, not an auction.
>>
>>51570509
I mean guide says 220 is good for buyout
>>
>>51570520
All the cheap ones come with too much cosmetic wear.
>>
>>51570545
If it's scratches on the lid or letters running off on the keyboards then it's not much issue.

You can sand down the lid, apply stickers, carbon fiber wrapping or spraypaint the former and replace keys/ignore it for the latter

If it's damaged screens, cracked bezels or missing parts then it becomes an investment that you have to repair
>>
So my Dell XPS M1710 is melting. It's missing keys, overheats, and the CPU maxes out the moment I start a video player.

I'm studying Art/Design currently with the intention of going into Fashion. I need a new Laptop for using Photoshop, Illustrator, Premier, and various other programs. I also intend to do normal browsing.

The typical recommendation for artfags such as myself is to get a Macbook but they are expensive as fuck and I'd rather spend that extra money on a new bicycle or nothing at all.

Should I get a thinkpad?
>>
>>51570653
Well you'd want something with a good display which is hard to come by on an old thinkpad

Perhaps a X201 tablet would be the cheapest bet with its IPS display and tablet function
>>
>>51570582
Or I could just get one that's in good condition for an appropriate price. Go try hard somewhere else faggot

T60 here
>T2600 CPU (originally T2400)
>3GB RAM
>500GB HDD plus 1TB HDD in ultrabay
>worst possible screen option
>ATI X1300 GPU
>T500 heatsink installed
I can't recommend that heatsink enough. It both runs more quietly and a good 20 degrees cooler with it and some thermal paste instead of those godawful pads. An absolute necessity if you have one of the dGPU models.

I've got a screen upgrade on the way, and then when the CPU and RAM start feeling cramped I'm probably going to get a T61 board and Frankenpad it. More immediately I intend to move the Intel 320 SSD out of my X220 and into the T60 once I pick up an mSATA drive. All in all I really love this machine, it was my introduction to Thinkpads and it's still my favorite. Just pleasant to use, which coming from shitty consumer laptops was a very alien concept to me. I didn't think I'd ever appreciate a laptop for reasons other than the power of its hardware, but the T60 taught me to love.
>>
sup /tpg/ , whats the difference between a x201 and x220? ;-;
>>
>>51571268
X220 has a stronger processor and can take much faster RAM (up to 1866mhz with an old or modded BIOS). X201 has a 16:10 screen if vertical space is important to you, but it's only 1280x800 compared to the X220's 1366x768, so it's not that big of a difference. That's about it.

T7200 T60 will work with T7250 (I think?), should fit a T7600 at least.
