You'll quickly get used to it. It's not much different from a Surface or iPad Pro and very close to a Wacom Cintiq. Delay/Lag is a non-issue with brushes smaller than 40px.
What could be an issue is parallax (cursor deviation) especially at the edges.

There's no comparison with 3DS/WiiU touchscreens, these digitizers are completely different in the way they operate. The deviation issue isn't too bad because the cursor appears when your pen is hovering about 2cm above the screen, which helps with positioning the cursor.
But yeah, the X61t is perfectly adequate for sketching, parallax has less of an effect when you're doing quicker and longer strokes.

What's your opinion on Lenovo System Update?
Seems pretty handy and I use it to avoid having to manually install all the drivers. Is there anything shady about that I don't know of?

I'm looking for a thinkpad, but it actually needs to be decently priced and capable of running adobe suite decently which I guess is a hard thing to achieve as I'm not made of money.

This is sort of a blessing in disguise for those of us with older machines. The i7-2720QM in my W520 will kick the living shit out of the i5-5200u in my work-issued T450, despite the fact that the latter has a 5-year advantage. And software developers are aware of this, so more than ever older computers remain usable long into the future. My mother is still on a T60 which is more than adequate enough for daily internet tasks, despite being 9 years old. The reason being is it's probably more powerful than the average cell phone that everyone's fawning over now.

At the same time this trend is sort of pathetic. A Tx10 will yield about the same performance as a Tx50 unit. So when you upgrade in a few years, you're basically going back to square one.

People say it is a bad resolution, but I am fine with it on my X220 and X230. For the small screen, it actually has a fairly OK pixel density, and the aspect ratio is good for Chinese cartoons and programming etc.

X220 is a good machine, don't be so quick to rule it out. As for the T420s, I would stay away, the battery is smaller, and therefore runtime is decreased, and the slimmed down form factor means it gets warmer too. The classic T420 is where it is at.

Also, the best most definite way to get the screen resolution is asking the seller, but most machines with the higher end parts (i7s, Nvidia GPU) will also have the higher resolution screen. There is always a chance though, so I would not risk it.

X series has soldered CPUs, you can't upgrade them short of completely replacing the motherboard. T420 is your best bet for upgradability, especially now that we're starting to see BIOS mods that allow the usage of Ivy Bridge processors and up to 1866mhz RAM. Specwise T420 is far superior than the T61
Build wise its the otherway around, formfactor, keyboard feel, modding, the T61 has been much better.

A T430 will still be a better performer than the T420. Honestly the keyboard feel/layout differences is minimal from those two, if I want a good keyboard I'll type with my X300, A31p or T43p.

I've been thinking about getting an x220 and I had some questions.

1. What's the max amount of ram I could use in it? Official specs seem to say 8GB, but some people are saying that 16GB is possible. I don't really need 16GB for my use case, but I'd like to have the option in the future, if needed.

2. What kind of battery life could I expect with a 6 cell or a 9 cell battery while web browsing/video watching/ programming? On my current laptop (a MacBook air) I can easily get about 8-12 hours, so I was wondering how an x220 would compare.

I just picked up

- T60 with Core 2 Duo T2500
- T60 with Core 2 Duo T7200
- X200 with Core 2 Duo P8600

for $55 total. I've got a pretty good handle on what I'll need RAM and SSD-wise, but am a bit unclear on if/how I can upgrade the processors.

I do see that Core 2 Duos look bretty cheap on ebay so upgrading looks attractive. I haven't opened up the thinkpads yet other than to max out the ram in the T7200.

What are the fastest processors I can drop in these and expect them to "just werk"? Ideally with no ACPI trickery/ custom kernels as I may give these away to family members and I'd rather they not brick on dist-upgrade. I am capable of one time-mods including soldering/dremel usage etc.

Okay, got the keyboard off and things looked kind of messy with the heatpipes and whatnot, and the ifixit guide didn't cover CPU replacement so I'd be flying blind/relying on shaky youtube videos so I closed it up for now. You can sand down the lid, apply stickers, carbon fiber wrapping or spraypaint the former and replace keys/ignore it for the latter

I can't recommend that heatsink enough. It both runs more quietly and a good 20 degrees cooler with it and some thermal paste instead of those godawful pads. An absolute necessity if you have one of the dGPU models.

I've got a screen upgrade on the way, and then when the CPU and RAM start feeling cramped I'm probably going to get a T61 board and Frankenpad it. More immediately I intend to move the Intel 320 SSD out of my X220 and into the T60 once I pick up an mSATA drive. All in all I really love this machine, it was my introduction to Thinkpads and it's still my favorite. Just pleasant to use, which coming from shitty consumer laptops was a very alien concept to me. I didn't think I'd ever appreciate a laptop for reasons other than the power of its hardware, but the T60 taught me to love.

X220 has a stronger processor and can take much faster RAM (up to 1866mhz with an old or modded BIOS). X201 has a 16:10 screen if vertical space is important to you, but it's only 1280x800 compared to the X220's 1366x768, so it's not that big of a difference. That's about it.

T2500 T60 won't work with T7250
T7200 T60 will work with T7250 (I think?), should fit a T7600 at least.

The T2500 will max out at T2700.

Unless I've been completely tricked and Core 2 Duo fit in Core Duo T60s

Am very tempted to get a T61 board so I can use more RAM and fit a 64bit C2D in it, but they're so fucking expensive....

What is everyones thoughts on the Lenovo Thinkpad 10, the hybrid laptop/tablet thingo, It looks pretty neat and isn't too expensive?

Was thinking of getting one as I was quite surprised with how much I enjoyed using my friends Surface except for the fact that it was on windows RT which gave me cancer.
