The box design is... interesting. It's like pulling out a book out of a volume set, except there's only one book.

I've GIMPed out any identifying information
You may see a region in the attached pic that looks airbrushed. The IMEI and a bunch of unique shit is on there.

Interestingly, Microsoft only provided me with the informational stuff in only two languages--French and English. I guess they know pretty well that chinks and spics aren't gonna buy their phone.

Incidentally, while it doesn't say so on their product page, the pre-orderable 950 XL is a Dual SIM phone. In the box you can see a wall-wart for USB-C, and a rather short 1.5M USB 3.0 to USB-C cable. This cable does not charge fast (~4H). I have not tested the wallwart.

Opening it up, I was surprised. It has a removable battery, which has not been mentioned anywhere (that I remember). As noted everywhere, it has a MicroSD slot, supporting theoretical 2TB. The highest capacity available is 200GB (~185GB actual). Needs a nano-SIM. I only have a full-sized SIM, and no SIM cutter, so I'll have to go out to T-Mobile tomorrow and get one.

If you look at those pairs of contacts on top and bottom, those are evidence of Qi-charging (Wireless charging) support

>>51533355
I suppose compared to an iPhone adapter it is kind of large, but it really isn't. It won't block any other plugs due to the footprint. It's probably resultant from USB-C power delivery requirements. Says "5.0V 3.0A" on the side.

The blacked-out portion contains IMEI information on the phone. I airbrushed it out on this next picture. I forgot to mention, but the MicroSD slot supports SDXC standard 3.0.1, which means it takes in cards up to UHS-I speeds. Not that it matters. Nothing supports UHS-II.

All these screws seem to imply that it is probably about as easy to take apart as the average Samsung phone, but I'm not about to test that out. Wait till ifixit gets their hands on one.

Close-up of USB-C.
To remove the back cover, you jam your fingernail in and pry it off like you would the top bezel of a ThinkPad, which obviously sounds rather precarious for a phone. I don't have any experience with other Lumias to go off of, but I'm assuming this style helps with sealing against water.

The in-side of the back cover. More evidence of Qi-charging support. This phone only has one speaker, but two microphones.
It seems to not be dedicated towards multimedia like most Samsungs are, but I tested the audio quality of the DAC subjectively with my SE-215 IEMs, and it seems OK.

I used to also have a Dual SIM Japanese TV-phone.
In terms of hardware, I would say that the Lumia 950 XL is basically perfect, and that I haven't downgraded in any way.
Not that it would be particularly difficult to beat an shitty 2009 Samsung camera phone.

Continuum works pretty well.
I'm using the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter, not the dock. Y'know that $60 Wi-Di dongle that overheats.

Upsides of continuum: Apps that matter work on it. Excel, Word, Powerpoint, OneNote Edge, et al. They all work.

Downside: It's low resolution. Not even 1080. I actually don't know what resolution it is. Probably 720p or 1366x768. You can use the phone as a touchpad and the phone's keyboard, but phone glass isn't really good for sliding around all the time. Too much resistance.

Important detail I hadn't noticed until now:
All of the pictures of the Lumia 950 XL show the camera's flash and the camera itself integrated into one piece of glass.

That is actually incorrect.
Looking at it now, I see that the flash has it's own section, so you don't have to worry about any internal reflections interfering with exposure.

I'll say this beforehand: I've only ever used the browser and 4chan's built-in extension before.

Imageboard Browser is pretty shit to use in comparison. You can't quote people while typing, because the reply box is the entire space, and it doesn't even save your reply when you leave it.

4charm won't even install. I get some error code that I can't remember from the Windows Store.

I just got 4charm to install. In theory, it works infinitely better than Imageboard Browser.
The layout is cleaner and I can distinguish individual posts and threads better. It just looks more like vanilla 4chan.
I can also quote people while typing out my reply.

However, it hasn't been updated in a while, so the new Google Captcha (with image verification) doesn't work worth jack.
So basically it's great at everything, but you can't post.
>>
Does continuum heat up your phone? Also, is the Continuum version of Edge like the desktop one?

Because Google doesn't control every aspect of your device. Microsoft does when you have windows 10 installed.

Google can't implant ads into your boot screen or login menu or start menu or into ANY web browser or program they want.

Google is restricted to web browser only. Microsoft on the other hand knows what your favorite anime is, your fetishes, the pirates software you use and if you jerk off with your left hand or your right.

Windows 10 is 100% bullshit and intead of some ad hominem bull shit you should be seriously asking yourself why you are even supporting windows 10.

So today I decided to test the audio quality.
I have no other smartphones to compare it against, so you'll have to bear with me.

On my SE215s the quality was pretty meh.
But then I plugged in my DT770s and I was like, "DAMN."
The DAC is quite high quality. Definitely higher quality than the FiiO E-07k and the current gen iPod shuffle.
If I had to describe it, then I would say that the entire spectrum is more detailed.

As a side note, if you plug out your headphones, then the music player (Groove Music) will pause for you.
For those curious, I tested it with a FLAC rip of DAOKO's ShibuyaK. So yeah, the phone perfectly supports FLAC.

>>51537753
Depends on the interface. Bluetooth has no lag, and for the times that you're going to be using Bluetooth, you're not gonna care about the audio quality.
Wi-Fi (network) works great, but there's about a 2-3 second lag. I haven't done any objective tests as to the quality of the audio (nor am I able to), but I can assure you that the audio stream is transferred bit-perfect depending on the transfer medium. DLNA, the default, is not bit-perfect by the way.
Good old Analog will (obviously) have you bypassing the internal DAC, which in my opinion isn't even that bad.

As for using NFC, on my 950XL all I had to do was press my phone against the speaker and it was already connected. It's that easy to set up Essentially it's a great speaker to carry around to friend's apartments, things like that.

>>51537061
But at least I'm not a robot :へ)
>>
>>51535134
Oh wait, you meant Continuum and RDP. Yeah, YouTube is lag free. Actually I can tell you in some detail how it works because I'm vaguely familiar with the protocol involved.

So the deal with YouTube is that with Continuum the rendering is done on the phone and then pushed onto the screen. There's no lag because you are the source device performing the desktop rendering.
As for using a Microsoft Wireless Display dongle versus a wired Microsoft Dock, there's obviously going to be some major differences.
Wi-Di is limited range, so the image and (especially) the audio is going to become distorted on occasion.
I'm sure there's a small bit of lag comparing wireless to wired, but it is absolutely not significant.
I watch my Chinese cartoons on these things all the time.

With Remote Desktop (specifically Microsoft's RDP protocol), the desktop rendering is only mostly performed on the client side. The deal with using Remote Desktop for anything is that there's gonna be shit tons of lag if your connection is slow, or if you're far. Remote Desktop isn't designed to be used to play your video games, although it is technically possible.
Otherwise Nvidia would be using it for their shite tablet.
>>
>>51533295
Sony packaged quite some phones like that

>>51540636
>Chromecast
Continuum is a better implementation. Less throw-your-phone-at-the-screen and more create-a-real-desktop.
