What is a DAW?
Digital
Audio
Workstation

>What DAW is yours?

>How long you been on it?

>How long have you been into music?

>What genre do you play with the most?

>What Genre do you think you are best at?

>Have you thought about changing up to something else?

>What's your favorite synth, no matter how dumb it is?

>Do you see yourself doing this way later on even if you get no where?

Bonus points:

>Why don't you look at me when we make love any more?

1 simple rule I hope you can guys do, please don't be assholes to those who
have a different perspective on another DAW, no matter what it is or how shitty
it is. I know there are some very laughable ones out there but ya know...
So please just be as helpful as you can.

>this is /g/ not /mu/ gtfo

We do not talk about the music as it is but how it's created and what we use and how to help
others get better

Seriously tho, using a Daw on the linux side of things is an absolute nightmare getting that ass backwards Dssi-vst wrapper working correctly. Even then it's just not even worth it.

Yeah I get the idea, it just would've been awesome to use a system that doesn't depend on a windows or Osx dependency.

But you do lose out on processing power when using wine or any hypervisor for that matter, and if you've used U-he's diva or even Serum, you know you're in for a bad time in audio processing.
>>
>>51534005
serum did well for me last time.

>What DAW is yours?
Ableton Live 9, ProTools 11
I'm thinking about trying Logic X for sound design in video because the video engine in Ableton Live is shit and ProTools is a pain in the ass for sound design imho. I run everything on a hackintosh.

>How long you been on it?
For years, but never took it seriously until some months ago. Wasted so much time.

>How long have you been into music?

>What genre do you play with the most?
Trance and Deep House. Second to that would be beats and left-field techno

>What Genre do you think you are best at?
Trance

>Have you thought about changing up to something else?
NO

>What's your favorite synth, no matter how dumb it is?
Virus TI

>Do you see yourself doing this way later on even if you get no where?
It's either DJ/producer, game sound, movie sound or composing.
>>
>>51534005
The audio processing thread should never make any calls to anything windowsy ever. The audio callback function in those programs is basically pure math.

Using wineasio you can approximately get the performance of the asio drivers on windows through jack. Never really benchmarked it but I got my latency super low.
>>
>>51533192
>What DAW is yours?
Primarily FL Studio 10. Hate the font change on 11.

>How long you been on it?
About 5 years.

>How long have you been into music?
Playing music on and off since I was 10, writing MIDI and having a band for about a decade, producing electronic for about 5 years.

>What genre do you play with the most?
Future Bass nowadays.

>What Genre do you think you are best at?
I have to do pretty much everything because I make music for a living. When it comes to music making, it's all the same past a certain point.

>Have you thought about changing up to something else?
Always changing. Stagnation is death.

>What's your favorite synth, no matter how dumb it is?
I'm liking my Yamaha AN1x a lot.

>Do you see yourself doing this way later on even if you get no where?
I'm not sure if as a producer I'll "get anywhere" because promotional channels don't give a fuck about me, but I have been paying the bills and buying synths with just music for games and anime for around two years now so it's not too bad. I have considered the possibility I might get tired of this in the future and go try a different technology-related industry. Right now, it's fun and I work from home.

>>51536074

>>
>>51536074
12 looks horrible, changed everything up where things are at... It's just not cool what they did to it
>>
>>51536074
I always test out the new software version for a couple of months and run it together with the old one just in case. I had Ableton Live 8 and 9 running for about a year.
>>
>>51533192
>What DAW is yours?
FL Studio 11.
Might get 12, but the fact that literally nothign made in FL 12 works in 11 bothers me (not evne flp's, but presets)
>How long you been on it?
Since 2008-2009?
>How long have you been into music?
7 years.
>What genre do you play with the most?
Progressive house and trance.
>What Genre do you think you are best at?
Progressive house.
>Have you thought about changing up to something else?
I do other genres as well.
DnB, IDM, hardcore, hardstyle, ambient.
Been thinking about trying out Ableton and Bitwig.
>What's your favorite synth, no matter how dumb it is?
Serum.
The only dumb thing about it is that it's pretty resource heavy when you have several instances of it in one project.
>Do you see yourself doing this way later on even if you get no where?
Until the day I die.

Want to get some hardware.
Like an MPC or just a MIDI keyboard.
I used to have a keyboard, but it broke.
>>
>>51536367
Ableton might help you with the resource problem, you could just freeze & flatten the tracks you're done with.
>>
for someone who wants to get into making music digitally, but has no experience doing so, what's a good DAW for newbies? i'm an electrofag
>>
>>51536740
literally, FL, I may be an FL studio fag but for newbs, it's normally has the easiest work flow, but most here are going to tell you protools, Ableton and prolly some others.

But if you don't want a headache, go with FL first and figure out what you think is you. Don't use LMMS. It's literally as if Ableton and FL had a drunken retarded baby.

But, start simple. And if you're serious about it, good luck. If you have the talent for it.
>>
>>51536740
It's not about the DAW, per se. FL Studio can be easy for beginners but in my opinion the workflow is not that quick. Just download every DAW and try it out for some time.
Reaper, Reason, ProTools, Ableton Live 9, Cubase, FL Studio (Windows only), Logic X (Mac only).

What you need to learn is arrangement, mixdown, sound design.
It's a slow, painful process but rewarding in the end.
>>
>>51536822
>(windows only)
No?
It works amazing in Wine on Linux and FL12 was made for mac too ya knnow

>learning these words he mentioned
Yes and no, this is nerd talk. You don't have to learn it if you don't want to. I didn't and 1/2 way decent.
>>
>>51536822
>try all of them
nigga are you for real
>>
>>51536868
You run your DAW on Wine? Doesn't it crash constantly?
Afaik you can run FL Studio in Bootcamp, which is Windows or use the Mac OS X Alpha.
An alpha is never okay for everyday use.

Not knowing how to arrange and mix and design sound is NOT nerd talk. Unless you exclusively push together Vengeance loops and samples (no judging), then you will need to learn these things.
And even sample-based music needs mixing.
>>
>>51536880
I didn't mean all literally. But the ones I listed are all worth considering. It's not like any of us has a time problem.
>>
>>51536912
No. I hardly had any issues if not less than windows. For some reason WINE is better working with Windows programs than windows was. if I could pull up my old Linux Mint 13 (I think) I would and show you.

When I say Nerd Talk, I say it this way because, it really is. How so? To me, I didn't learn any of that
Did you ever watch Yugioh GX or up? Did you ever see the natural duelists there who could win and have fun? But then you had the ones that were "taught" how to duel and they were bland and boring? That's the idea here. Jaden could duel any one and almost win but at the same time, he sucked at tests and school in general. I tell people to play with it and learn it yourself. NOW that's not to say learning to play the piano isn't a good idea. I don't know how to play the piano...

I listen to a lot of music, I always have music playing.

Yeah I know.
I do that in FL when I have to.
People keep saying it's difficult to do it in FL, but I just use Edison and then click and drag the recording to the playlist and it ends up in the project's data folder.
>>51536740
With FL Studio, you'll have full control over everything you want to do.
Some people might say that that means "it's too complicated", but it's pretty easy to get a flow going if you're starting out fresh.

No it's not.

For mastering, I sometimes use Maximus, but I tend to use FL's Multiband Compressor because it's quicker to work with. I also use Xfer Records' OTT together with it.

How hard is to make music for living(enough to live and sometimes buy stuff) and is it possible to do it only from home?I saw some guys already in the thread who do it but since the thread is old i doubt that they will respond
>>
>>51554488
Hard. You're always either working, studying or putting your name out there. Forget doing what you want/like, you'll do what people need you to do. However, it's very rewarding past a certain learning curve.

Just don't try it without a day job: getting that first good gig is no indication that the second one is right around the corner. What I did was having a part-time situation going on and doing it on the side until I had steady clients and was losing money by not staying in bed all day and running the trap.
>>
>>51554488
you have to literally have like a 1 hit wonder or sign a deal with snoop dog or some one famous like Justin Beiber did...

That's literally how this shit works. You don't make it in a day, or a year, it takes years to get where you want to get. It's not the 80's or below. You can't make a band and play a guitar like you use to. Everyone wants to make music. A good example is my 16 year old step brother. He at one time was bugging me to put FL studio on his computer so he could make trap. I said,"Fine, ok I can." then he looked at it, and said it was too hard and went back to skyrim and foot ball games and other online games. The fact that he gave up with out even trying pissed me off.

If you want in this type of business, you have to honestly work for it. It's not easy, it's not always going to be fun, you're not always going to be able to make what you want but hell, in the end you can at least say you did well.

Aside from that, it's the same with writing a book. Everyone wants to write a book, but forgetting that editors and publishers are a thing. My mom for years has been saying that she is going to and never has. Then I have friends who say they will write a book and then write like 20 pages and say"This is harder than it looks" Shit, I have almost an entire 500 page book finished.

if you ever want to talk more, see the link down in my OP anon.

2nd this
>>
>>51554894
Im neet anyway so i can focus completely on my music
>>51555454
Ive seen alot of not really known artists making living of music(probably from live shows only) and i dont really expect to have more than for basic living.Of course its going to be harder then i expect but i am willing to sacrifice everything for it
>>
>>51555600
don't unless you want to live on the streets. Like anon said, have a 2nd job. Don't waste your time unless you are already making a living like any other artist. It's a bad idea. Making music is fun as shit to most of us, but when it comes down to it, pirating your CD if it's popular is easier than buying it so your sales will go down. The last 2 Deadmau5 and Cascada CDs that have come out and Daft Punk I have all pirated (pls no h8). Mostly due to being a broke nigger ;_;

Sure, I would love to support them but at the same time as kid rock said"I would rather my fans pirate my music than be ripped off by Apple"
>>
Where does a complete beginner start? Should I just jump into learning a program like FL Studio, or spend some time educating muself about music?

Also, what are good online sources for learning?
>>
>currently making a lot of money from selling songs and albums online.
>no label
If you make good music and people like it, people will buy it.
>>
>>51555677
That's a very naive viewpoint
>>
>>51555675
>FL shill
>>
>>51555675
50/50
Music theory will put you to sleep, so honestly, if you know what sounds decent and you know what sounds in tune, it's noly a matter of time till you figure it out. yes, try it.

>>51555677
>>51555692
It is but at the same time, it's not a bad idea if it works. He's not wrong.

>>51555706
fuck off, nearly 90% of the shit that happens on /g/ is shill and calling it out is literally going to get you know where.
>>
>>51555719
>It is but at the same time, it's not a bad idea if it works. He's not wrong.
He is wrong, most people do not buy music these days and the small amount of people who do will not line your pockets. You must be a fool if you think just because your music is good then people will buy it.
>>
>>51555692
The world isn't as harsh as you think it is.
>B-But you have to produce what the masses like or else you won't make any money
Sure, go ahead.
It's not like there are 10,000 other people doing exactly that.
>>51555719
>It is but at the same time, it's not a bad idea if it works. He's not wrong.
Especially since Patreon, Bandcamp and other donation services exist.
Twitch, for example, just started allowing people to stream themselves doing muisc stuff.
>>
>>51555719
>FL shill confirmed
>>
>>51555758
>>51555768
Oh no, I do agree with it, I'm saying he's not wrong that you can make a little cash off it is all if done right, by no means should you rely on it. WORST mistake possible.
>twitch
I was already doing that.

>>51555770
ok? if you dont like it fuck off.
>>
>>51555768
I didn't say it was harsh but well established artists find it hard to make album sales. Relying on "if you're good they will buy it" is extremely naive and out of touch with reality.
>>
>>51555785
>actually admitting to shilling
you know it is against the rules anon?
>>
>>51555706
Why don't you provide a counter option instead of using memetic buzzwords?
>>
>>51555826
Why don't you get a job instead of advertising on image boards?
>>
>>51555844
Cause advertising on image boards already pays the bills.
>>
>>51555800
I didn't admit to it. Technically ANY ONE here saying anything about any program here is technically shilling it.
>ableton shill
>FL Shill
>protools shill
>Cubase shill

See my point? I could point out everything here like you

>>51555844
1/2 agree only cause I don't think you're ever going to make it big in the next 5 years unless you sign on with a giant label.
>bruh listen to my mix tape
>>
>>51555883
>Technically ANY ONE here saying anything about any program here is technically shilling it.
No, anon, that's not how it works.
>>
>>51555883
>1/2 agree only cause I don't think you're ever going to make it big in the next 5 years unless you sign on with a giant label.
There isn't really any 'making it big' any more. Most of the 'big' artists you could name were already big before album sales plummeted.
>>
>>51555890
im not fighting with you anon, read the thread like you didn't do

Why are you even arguing with me in the first place? why do you even care? you are literally crying like a little kid not getting his way.

>>51555907
exactly. That is why I am wanting to be a Music Game Composer. I don't hear a lot of people wanting to do it, so maybe I might get a chance to sign on a game or something if I'm lucky, but I'm not putting my eggs in 1 basket anon
>>
>>51555935
>I don't hear a lot of people wanting to do it
You would be surprised how many want to do that. Go to any audio engineering school/college and you will find many people at the very least aware of it and considering it as a career. It's probably more realistic that becoming an artist though.
>>
>>51555947
i wouldn't mind becoming known of course like a lot of famous games right now.
>>
Literally everyone and their moms are trying to do music for games, but most simply don't have it in them to do a variety of styles competently or market themselves. It's a market even more saturated than web design or drawings.
>>
>What DAW is yours?

Ableton Live 9.1

>How long you been on it?

5 years

>How long have you been into music?

Since 2001 more or less

>What genre do you play with the most?

Berlin techno, dub techno

>What Genre do you think you are best at?

Piano imprpvisation

>Have you thought about changing up to something else?

Sometimes i think about selling every piece of hardware I own and become a laptop producer

>What's your favorite synth, no matter how dumb it is?

CS-80, ARP2600 and CSI Prophet 6, hands down

>Do you see yourself doing this way later on even if you get no where?

Very likely so
>>
>>51556100
i know 1 other person that wants to do VGM while others wants to go out and be EDM Dub artists.
>>
>>51556375
>EDM Dub artists
Think you mean dubstep.
Dub is not what you mean here.

Just because you know one person doesn't invalidate what the other person said, what he said is true. It will be a very difficult field to get in to and there is a LOT of competition.
>>
>>51556393
most the kids I know want to get into programming and other computer shit.

My father thinks I should be IT and I told him
"Why should I waste my time doing IT when 50M other people want to do it, let alone in GA here. Let me goto a job interview with 20 other candidates all wanting the SAME position as me and then get turned down by an Indian guy who can hardly speak English. Yeah that's a good idea right?"

Even then, I still don't hear enough on VGMC's to feel like there's enough competition to matter

>dub
yeah dupstep, but still you get my point. All EDM kids want to do is either Dubstep or something like it and forgetting there is a wide variety of techno-like-EDM out there.
>>
>>51556436
That's cool but, again, your view and experience doesn't mean that's how things are. If you want to ignore the advice you have been given then that's fine but at least two people here have told you that the game market is saturated and very difficult to penetrate.

I won't discuss 'EDM' with you, I am not American and the term is disgusting and most of the music which falls under the umbrella of EDM is awful. No offence to you but generally Americans have such a terrible taste in electronic music.
>>
>>51556472
I'm not disagreeing with you anon, I realize this too. I just have to hope that I find a indie artist or maybe get in with someone big. Again not putting my eggs in 1 basket.

>have terrible taste.
I don't know, I try to find different artists when I can and see what they are all like. I'm sure I could say the same thing about you. Even then, I'm sure I could say,"Why the FUCK are you listen to [insert metal band here]"
>>
>>51556508
I'm talking about the fact that most people seem to see EDM as either godawful noise brostep or house. I am generalizing because not all Americans are like that, of course, but as a term EDM is something I am very wary of when mentioned.
>>
>>51556551
i could name at least 5 differnet genres i love off the top of my head—house of course is not complicated to make, set the BPM between 115-150 and BAM you basically have house with a 4 step cord and a bassline. WOOT.
I love house as much as the next guy but changing it up is fun.

OK here's a question [for any one] would classify Hardstyle as house technically in this sense?
>>
>>51533192
>What DAW is yours?
All I have is Adobe Audition CC.

>How long you been on it?
Three years.

>How long have you been into music?
Forever, but especially since 2009 when I got into a relationship with a professor of classical piano.

>What genre do you play with the most?
Classical music.

>What Genre do you think you are best at?
Classical music.

>Have you thought about changing up to something else?
My own avantgarde music. I want to compose.

>What's your favorite synth, no matter how dumb it is?
...I don't really know what a synth is. Sorry. Classical music is mostly about acoustic instruments, but we also have a Yamaha Clavinova digital piano that can be connected to the PC. Does that count?

>Do you see yourself doing this way later on even if you get no where?
Yes.
>>
>>51556375
>i know 1 other person that wants to do VGM
If you ever go into a game development forum or something similar, you're going to have a rude awakening on the numbers.
>>
>>51556626
i can imagine.
