I'm thinking of building a Frankenpad. It's basically a T61p mobo in a T60p chassis with a 1600x1200 Flexview display. I'll use the Middleton BIOS, obviously. I'll upgrade the CPU and put in an SSD. I'll probably use it with an Ultrabay battery.

Should I go for it?

Unless it's made in August 2008 or later (which is quite rare and thus rather expensive if you even manage to find one), it's a timebomb due to faulty nVidia chip. Also, all T61(p) are already backdoored with the Intel vPro/AMT botnet stuff.

Yeah this is utter bullshit. T61 usually has just about enough RAM, usually Core 2 Duo which is fast enough for basically any task that isn't playing vidya games. These laptops will get shit done.

Based on what I've seen the T61 is a sub $60 way to get a C2D business laptop.

I got one for $9.99, not even kidding. $20 chinese battery, $10 adapter, hard drive or ssd to fit your budget. It even has expresscard which does USB 3.0.

I don't care about games, this does everything for business and personal tasks. Love the shit out of the T61. Tri boot it with XP, 7, and linux, it is a lordly IT laptop.
