Finalized edition.

Corsair 250D mini ITX & MG279Q Asus.

Maximus VIII Impact mITX mobo.

Corsair 16 GB(2x8GB), Vengeance LPX, DDR4 2400 MHz, CL14
Intel Core i7-6700K 4 GHz LGA1151
EVGA GTX980Ti Hybrid
Samsung SSD 850 Evo 250
Corsair AX760i
Corsair Cooling Hydro H80i GT

2500 euros.
Did I get jewed or not?
>>
As an owner of a 250d, buy the h100i (non gtx) It's designed to perfectly fit in the 250d's side panel with plenty of room for fans, even with the vertical VRMs of your motherboard. The h80i is trash.

Then just attach your hybrid 980ti's radiator to the front slot.
>>
>>51523689
Mine's 250D mini and I was sure the H100i wouldn't fit into it with the EVGA Hybrid 980Ti
>>
Neber understood the point of mitx boards. Pay a premium for less space and slots than a comparable full atx or even mid atx board.

Anyhow it looks fine, but why the hybrid card? Why not just get an air cooled card?

Need help /g/ents. Currently have a good z97 board and i5 4690k. For basic tasks and certain games, the i5 is fine. But for video encoding and newer games that actually use more than 4 threads, it falls on its face. That said I can get a brand new i7-4790k from microcenter for $240. Is it worth it to get the 4790k and more ram for $400 total?

Or should I just get a z170 system? Ram speed has little if any impact on gaming and general use. So ddr3 vs ddr4 isnt really big to me.

Tl,dr
4790k and 32gb ram for $400 using existing motherboard
Or
6700k, z170 board, 32gb ddr4 for $700
Or
5930k, x99, 32gb ddr4 for $850?

This would be used for gaming, encoding, and occasional photo editing.
Just looking for a build to last.
>>
>>51523730
I read that the watercooling system lowers the temperature really well (the temp of GPU and the temp of the entire case) and it is quieter than normal cooling.
>>
>>51523730

4790k
>>
>>51523730
I like to have easily movable PC so that's why I chose mITX.

I move around a lot. Sometimes even 3-4 times a week.
>>
>>51523788
Why is that? Student? Curious.

And thanks guys. Think I'll go with the 4790k.
>>
>>51523723
I know. I own the corsair 250d mini itx case, just like the one you want. I can tell you in complete confidence that it WILL fit.

This picture isn't mine, but this is a picture of someone else's build that clearly shows what you should be doing. Don't cheap out on your CPU cooling with the h80i. It's pretty bad.
>>
>>51523815
Student and the way my friends are spread around the city area (in 60km radius), due to my father and mother living further away.
>>
>>51523730
Because they're qt senpai. And the 250d case is designed for AIOs. The direct air vents on the sides are great, but if you can utilize those AND a radiator for your gpu, you may as well. The hybrid cards perform amazing as well tbqh.

Repost because thread died before much joy came. Hopefully this equally answer the spree of familiar 980 Ti/i7 builds.

>MSI 980 Ti
>i7-4790K + Hyper 212 Evo
>HyperX Fury 16GB 1866MHz
>SuperNOVA P2 850W

Just three things now that I need to get wise about:

1: Which mobo should I be looking at, considering that everything I've picked needs to work together and reduce inefficiency, looking for compatibility and allowing for OCing. Keeping in mind that I'll be adding another 980 Ti come the future.

2: Case, something that'll fit it all with space for that SLI but also nice and breezy, still unsure if I need to add additional fans so it wouldn't be bad for a case to be able to do that.

3: Do I have to worry about the size of the Evo, I'm hearing that some people have touching between parts of it and certain sticks. Also heard a few times that the Evo is dated. Is that an issue?

I appreciate all generous knawledge, suggestions and improvements, cheers..
>>
>>51523986
When you say shows clearly what I should be doing, could you go into more detail?

I see where the GPU are, and the H100i, but is there anything else I should be noticing?

2) Define R5
3) The evo is fucking tiny. There is nothing special about it anymore, it is just one of many single tower coolers rated for around 140w.

If you were talking something like the D15, R1 ultimate, pic related and whatnot then you;d have to research about ram clearance.
>>
>>51524037
Nah, not really. A couple 80mm fans on the back additionally could be cool, but it's not necessary.
>>
>>51523765
Is ddr3 still going to be relevant a few years from now? As in will it still be fast and usable? Any ddr2 users that can give insight as to their experience when ddr3 first hit the market? I dont want to buy a ddr3 based system and have it a t like legacy a year later. Dont want to spend $400 now i ly to have to upgrade for $800 2 years later conpared to just spending the $800 now.
>>51523844
Oh ok. Makes sense. Still. The 250d is rather large. Only case id consider is like the CM elite 110. Get a good i5 with lp cooler and fury nano. Just look at it. Case is a qt3.14
>>51523871
They are but if you have the room or dong travel a lot, not worth the tag imo. But if money is no issue, have a blast!

As for AiO coolers, I dont trust them. Had a top tier CM nepton 280L die on me after 2 months light use. I came from custom liquid loops prior to that and have had the same pump running for years with no whine or problems.

I prefer air now because of simplicity. Whats the worst that can go bad on air? Some dust build up and maybe a fan whose bearings seized? To each their own but I find you get rather comparable performance from a good air cooler as you would from a top tier AiO with less hassle. Plus ease of mind that the pump wont die when you leave the pc on to download when youre not home.
>>
>>51524097
The picture you posted, the case has huge front fan (at least the one I have)

I just let it stay in there?
>>
>>51524073

You have delivered me from ignorance. Bless you, Anon.
>>
>>51524099

>Is ddr3 still going to be relevant a few years from now?

For most software the benefits of DDR4 aren't really going to matter. Fast DDR3 is going to last a while.

Still researching what software you use and if it benefits from DDR4's strengths (namely quad channel and option for really high densities) is the smart move.
>>
Is Tom's Hardware reliable source of information? Are there any bias I should be aware of?

It's hard to find reliable information when you're new to this.

I've been reading Overclock's forums.
>>
>>51524099
>CM Nepton
>tip tier

Coolermaster AIOs are bad anon

And AIOs are really only great for small cases (like mITX form factor) because you can squeeze in high performance that's more or less on par with a large air cooler within your limited vertical headroom. 250d in particular is big for mITX, and still only has ~90mm of headroom, and I doubt you'd find an air cooler that would perform as well as an AIO even in that situation.
>>
>>51524147

Their power draw measurements are top tier - especially the german team. Seriously, go read the german site for gpu reviews - they have a lot of shit that never makes it to the english site(s).

Pic related - most sites claim this card eats 800w on its own, but tomshardware actually monitored exactly how its drawing power and got an accurate result.
>>
>>51524117
You can mount it to your GPU radiator in addition to the one that your GPU comes with if you want so that you have push-pull airflow but it's not really that necessary, since the one that comes with the 250d is an airflow optimized fan and not static pressure optimized.
>>
>>51524198
See that's the thing their power measurments are so different to other sites and me as a retard that didn't study electrical engineering is wondering am I being fooled.
>>

Okay so I am stuck between 2 builds:

http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/YkvKvK -skylake
http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/gcZL3C -4790k

I do music production and casual gaming (the 380 is fine unless i get something better for not much more on sale). My worry is that the Skylake processor is not good enough for music production. The programs I use make use of multiple cores and hyperthreading and in the past I have ran into problems with the CPU maxing out and audio becoming broken and distorted. (this is on some shit i7 laptop cpu and when i start using a lot of plugins and software at the same time)

Any advice? I feel skylake will be better for future proofing/upgrading but right now I cannot afford a i7-6700k otherwise I would probably have already ordered a 6700k build and wouldn't be asking.

Thanks in advance.
>>
>>51524217

Generally most sites just use a kill-a-watt, take note of peak draw (which is a useless measurement) and then guesstimate back from the supposed power draw of the rest of the system. What that means is they are never certain other components aren't running out of spec/whatever.
>>
>>51524142
Primarily gaming, and programs like handbrake for bluray encoding. Goong to start messing with stuff like Sony Vegas and CS6 suite at the amateur level.

The ddr3 I have in mind is ddr3 2400mhz too. Only $75 per 16gb kit at microcenter.
>>51524160
For the price tag of $160 that I paid I expected much more. CM makes great fans but god their AiO units suck. And yea I know the benefits of AiO for cramped cases but I prefer air whenever possible.
>>
>>51523989
>>51524073
yes to the R5 case. Its really good and gives you the option of insane cooling or silence or a combo of both
>>
Any reccomendations on cases? I am really debating on what to get.

I personally feel 2400mhz DDR3 is worth it - even between single and dual channel there are minor differences for most workloads so going to quad isn't going to help unless yo uare working on an industrial scale.

Anyone here good with PCs?

I have been hooking my laptop to my monitor, single display. lovely picture.

Just now, I have decided to use 'extended displays', using both my laptop screen and monitor screen.

The quality of my laptop picture seems unaffected, but the monitor quality seems to have dropped. Resolution of monitor is apparently th same as when i was using it as single display.

What's going?

People's posts are almost blurry on here.

>>
>>51524305
Its cool. I preach hard for custom liquid vs AiO units because of how cheap custom components are becoming. I only jumped out of custom because of how often I switch parts, it wasn't practical.
>>51524318
Thats what i thought too. Difference between ddr3 2400 and ddr4 2400/2666 is so minimal it hardly seems worth it or its price. You need ddr4 3200+ to start seeing even a 2% difference.

And yup. Define r5 is GOAT. I didnt even buy one because of /g/. Built a $3k x99 workstation for a client in an R5. Loved it so much during the build process, I went and bought myself one same day. Everything is awesome about it.

That soruce 210 in your pic is a grway budget case. Easily the best in its price range hands down. Just dont expect to use all 8 hdd bays if your gpu is long.

Cpu: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072

>>
>>51524769

Basically.

My personal 290x (yeah yeah AMD) is a very meh overclocker - it will reach just over 1200mhz (1225 to be exact) which is a very high clock for the card, but it needs an eye-watering amount of voltage to do it. Thus I kind of lost the lottery.

How big is the difference between i5-4460 vs i5-4590?
There is a 15% difference in price between them where i live.
>>
>>51525097
Minimal to no difference. If you don't plan on overclocking then get the 4460 and put the few bucks you save into your GPU budget. That will give you more performance than a 0.2 Ghz boost on you CPU will.
>>
I think I've narrowed down the 970 to these 2

http://www.superbiiz.com/desc.php?name=AS-TB970O4

and

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121899

As far as I understand the STRIX just means the fans have the ability to turn off when not under load.

I'm leaning towards the STRIX one because it is $270 counting the $30 rebate.
>>
>>51525242
And how big would be the difference between the 4460 and the 4690k if i don't plan in overclocking(i would overclock it eventually of course, just wondering).
>>
>>51525379
Differences are still minimal at stock speeds. If you think you'll overclock eventually then obviously get the k-series chip, but otherwise save your money.
>>
>>51525403
I'm on a tight budget but I want to get a Z97 motherboard and a i5 even if its a non-k i5.

I guess the i5-4460 would be the best option for me.
>>
>>51525473
Do what you want, but remember that Z97 is the performance board made specifically for overclocking. If you want to upgrade to a 4690k in the future then it would be a good choice, otherwise get an H97 board.

Remember that cyber Monday is coming up and there will be many deals during the whole weekend. You may as well just grab a Z97 board plus a 4690k since pricing won't be this good again for a while.

yesterday ordered:
Intel Core i5-4690K
Cryorig H7 Universal
ASRock Z97 EXTREME4
Fractal Design Define S

from current build:
2x4 GB DDR3 1600 MHz
HD7790 1GB
Crucial M500 120GB SSD + some sata HDDs
Chieftec CFT-560-A12S (3 +12V lines, 23A - CPU, 14A, 13A)

my plan was to cut costs as much as possible without severely crippling performance and have a good, upgradeable base for next 3-4 years, also not blowing huge amounts at once but rather divide it into few smaller steps.

CPU - 4690k should last for these 3 years without being a bottleneck i think? if anything, i'll always be able to get used 4790k in case more threads are needed. cooler i assume will be enough for some medium overclocking, be it 4690k for now or even 4790k when/if i decide to upgrade.

1/3
>>
>>51527664

HD7790 - i know it's not powerful card, but i think it'll be enough untill pascal release (planning to get *70, maybe *60). i dont mind not being able to play few selected games till upgrade and having lowered settings in others, i don't care about being able to play everything on ultra afterupgrade too.

RAM - haven't went over 8GB yet so i guess i'm safe for some time, can always add more/swap to 2x8GB sticks when needed. i assume performance wont really suffer from it not being top models eithers.

SSD - my current one isn't really that fast, will i gain any improvements (likes ones i got from switching from normal hdd to ssd) from upgrading (to for example 850 evo) or it's just cosmetic? to be fair current one seems to be fast enough for me.

PSU - i know chieftec isn't that well known as in europe, but it's a solid well made psu. and i guess 23A line for CPU + 27A to have for graphic card and things like ssd/2 hdds should be enough.

2/3
>>
>>51527664
p. sure pascal will have its special connector so you are fucked anyway since no current gen mobo has such
>>
>>51527674

i'm on 1920x1080. i don't think i'll bother with 1440p soon, i might replace my tn panel to ips one before pascal (and change from 1920x1080 + 2x1280x1024 to 2x 1920x1080+1280x1024), then MAYBE add 1440p ips panel and just use 2 new monitors.

lets say i can save ~100€ for these changes starting january. thinking about reaching more or less completed base state when pascal goes out, then just changing things when needed. is my plan of changing from getting ~500€ in parts every few years to kind of keeping my stuff more or less up to date and recent all the time viable? is my logic flawed somewhere? what other changes should i consider?

And you read right. Both of my 980Ti Hybrids barely reach 55 degrees in Shadow of Mordor or GTA V at 1440p Ultra settings. The bottom card stays at around 50 degrees, never higher than that, but both fans don't even spin up.
The only negative is the pump noise from both cards is actually louder than the fans itself, but it's negligible since you likely have a CPU fan that's running at full tilt at those resolutions and settings.
Oh, and it won't overclock as well as the MSI Seahawk or Gigabyte Waterforce, since you're limited to a 8+6-pin PCI power connector and the card uses a reference PCB design.
>>
>>51527965
I didn't, but I should've, figured out that the different sized PCI/mobo limits the OC possibilities.

I'm happy if I can game the Witcher 3 and GTA V @ 1440p with good graphics and fps.
>>
>>51528067
It's only 3 FPS at most between a heavily overclocked MSI Seahawk and Gigabyte Waterforce over a Hybrid. You're probably better off with the Hybrid thanks to EVGA's better warranty program anyway.
SLI them like I did and there is no practical difference between the three.

With a hefty overclock it'll do 30-50 fps on high in most modern games. Some games though are card killers.

What annoys me is iirc there are no 4k freesync screens that go to 30hz on the freesync, most a 40hz or higher.

I'm not sure why you think you need an 8gb r9 390, as you'll more than likely run out of horsepower with the card before you get anywhere near the limit of 8. Or hell, even half of that probably.

That PSU is ridiculously overpriced. Pick something else. $160 for 80+ bronze means you're getting your ass ripped off, even from seasonic.

I don't particularly trust OCZ drives. No particular reason comes to mind, but I've never heard anything great about them. Not sure if I'd trust an m.2 ssd from them especially.

Since you've got the 850 EVO anyway, I'd suggest taking the funds from the m.2 drive and applying them to the GPU and stretching for an upgrade. That would do you MUCH better tbqh. The m.2 drive just isn't worth it. You won't notice any significant difference over traditional ssd.

Also, if you're not planning to run hard wired in to your Internet, upgrade that wireless card. My brother has that one and it's pretty fucking awful.

You could probably OC the processor and slap on some good GPU to it and see where it goes with games.

64GB SSD where 10-14 gigs is Winblows means you have 50-46GB for programs which is basically one modern game.

Maybe update the SSD to 128 or 256, 850 Evo from Samsung is oft recommended.

Its hard to build on scrapware.

I'm finally upgrading from my 2009-vintage Phenom II + 4000-series Radeon build. Putting some builds together, mostly torn between a Skylake build, a Haswell build, or maybe even a Haswell Xeon build (2 extra megabytes of L3 cache, hyperthreading enabled, and higher stock clockspeed, in exchange for no integrated graphics, AFAIK no unlocked options, and the difficulty of finding a consumer oriented motherboard that supports them).

The Skylake build is the most "future proof" since LGA1150 and DDR3 memory are deprecated. OTOH, with the incremental improvement of CPU performance from year to year, it probably won't make sense for me to upgrade my CPU until LGA1151 is long obsolete. And while DDR3 is on the way out, I already have a fair bit of memory I can harvest from my current PC, or I could take advantage of the low prices and pick up some additional higher speed memory today.

So keeping that in mind, I wonder if it makes more sense to save some money with a cheaper Haswell build and put the savings into the graphics card.
OTOH graphics cards are much easier to upgrade AND offer more considerable year-to-year improvements than CPUs do, so it probably makes more sense to invest more in my CPU now. The question then is whether you'd get better performance from a Skylake i5 build, or a Haswell Xeon-E3 build.

Any thoughts?

I was looking into it and noctua was more suited for OCing with while keeping noise down. Their heatsinks are best compared to dark rock's criss cross design.
>>
>>51545660
500gb for programs (Adobe suites, OS, OpenOffice suites, OBS, and a slue ton of other stuff that I calculated to be above 310gb, so 500-512 is the next option.

While the 2.5 ssd would be for very few games and housing current project files (videos for Premiere, Avid, After Effects, SpeedGrade. And large RAW images for lightroom, and Photoshop)

The 3tb drive houses my media (Animu, Movies, Manga, Music, completed projects) and 250gb in encrypted porn.

1tb for the rest of games and back-up porn, and some hard to come by series/movies/music.

The other 1tb, I believe I'll keep in my current build and do something with it.

If you're looking to cut money that's where you should look.
Maybe just the 3tb HDD

>>51545934
Next thing I'd cut would be the CPU and mobo.
Do you really need an I7
>>
>>51545958
i7 has hyperthreading. It's good to cut down on render times or just to be able to multi-task while it renders in the background.

Also the clock speed is higher and can get better speeds when OC compared to the i5.
On air, it could push 4.6 before messing with voltage. So that's a really huge margin compared to the i5 getting about 4.1 OCd on air.

As for the mobo, it's pretty cheap for a z170 chipset. You need that chipset for overclocking not only the CPU but the memory to be able to take the 3000mhz speeds.
If anything I believe I was skimping out on the mobo.
>>
>>51546127
Do you want to cut costs or not?

Ditch that fucking 950 PRO, there are far better options for the money than that. You won't even benefit from noticeably faster loading times with that.

Doing my first computer build this Christmas, how's this for under $500?

CPU: AMD Athlon X4 860k
Motherboard: Gigabyte FM2A88XM-D3H Micro-ATX
GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 950 SC+ ACX
RAM: Crucial 8 GB Ballistix XT DDR3 1600 MHz
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1 TB 7200 RPM

If you're a relatively experienced builder, and you do your research, it's easy to build in compared to a lot of other mini-ITX cases. That said, you MUST do your research beforehand, because it's not forgiving when it comes to part selection. Best bet is to look at the existing builds and copy one. There's a big gallery here: https://imgur.com/a/zOoA2

There's also not much room for cable management, so don't expect to have pristine-looking guts without some work tidying up the cables.

I made this decision when Skylake came out and they were still near in price. The 4790K has marginally better performance, but due to compatibility with DDR4 and because it was on the new socket and allowed for further upgradeability, I went with the 6600K. The 6600K is still fairly comparable performance-wise to a 3770K or 4770K anyway. They are also REALLY consistent overclockers.

I've owned several Seagates over the years. The stuff before the 2011 tsunami were okay to bretty good tier. It's after the tsunami that their drives went to shit (I'm fairly certain it affected all manufacturers who build out of the affected region), and it took them years to catch up to their pre-2011 reliability. I've have at least six Seagates from this era and only one of them survives today. I want to say that Seagate started to cheap out on manufacturing costs to shore up their losses from the tsunami, but it could also be that most Seagate drives being churned out by then were 7200rpm drives, which are inherently less reliable than 5400/5900rpm platters.
The only recent Seagate I've owned is their SSHD model, which has a 5900rpm platter. It's still alive after just over a year of constant use as a movie/TV show storage disk. I'm betting that it's still in good shape because it uses a much slower rpm platter, which has been refined to hell and back by now.
I've yet to try out their consumer drives, but their NAS and Constellation drives seem okay, if a little slower than their WD counterparts, the WD Red and Se.

Hey /g/. I'm not a regular here, and I'm sure you folks are sick of my sort especially considering the influx from Black Friday hullabaloo, but could you guys give me a hand selecting a Mobo and Case for this build?

I really don't care about epic 420 LEDs and whatnot on my case, so I selected the cheap mid-size NEXT case. However, I am unsure if it will have enough circulation and space for my GPU - it mentions this in the incompatibility section.

I also bought a cheaper mobo, should I go from a ~75 mobo to a ~125 mobo? I really don't understand the difference.

Maybe I can get a cheaper PSU?

Anything I should look out for in the upcoming weeks? I made this back in 2011 and it's been going fine being on all the time.

Recently ordered CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB RAM since it was about time.

Fuck, I picked out a Gigabyte R9 390 and I hear they're fucking ass. Should I spring the extra cash for a Sapphire?

Only reason I was going to take the 390 over a GTX 970 is because the Gigabyte's on a hefty $40 sale.
