All I do is shitpost on 4chan and watch Chinese cartoons. It does that fine for me. Feels a lot lighter and faster.

The point of gnu+linux isn't supposed to be easy to use and user-friendly. It's made to be extremely powerful and can be configured for specific things.

People with certain ideologies will also use it because muh evil gubment.

If you're a gaymer or someone who doesn't want to learn how to use a terminal, stay with wangblows or osx.

It's free of charge and virtually free as in freedom. You get to customize it the way you want it (looks and functionality) if that's what you want. You also get a unix-like base system that will allow you to interact with your computer and networks way faster than you would in Windows.

Installing and configuring services and servers is also way easier and convenient, through package management, that goes without even mentioning the huge software repositories you could get, depending on the distribution and the type of release that you choose you could even have access to community maintained software, that way you get the most up-to-date and bleeding edge experience.

Is not, get a fully featured distro like Debian, Ubuntu, Mint, etc. There's a ton of fully functional GNU/Linux systems for you to install, I would recommend Trisquel, which is also fully free (as in freedom). You can go stable or unstable/testing, either way you shouldn't have much trouble with it.

Unless you really want to learn the GNU/Linux way and get involved in every process of the installation and configuration, you would choose one of the more complicated distros like a net-install of Debian/Ubuntu, Arch, Gentoo, LFS, etc. But this is entirely optional.

If you don't try really hard to be free (as in freedom) you'll still end with a decent amount of proprietary software, be drivers, be it flash, be it codecs.
But the OS is gratis.

Customization. I have my own little shitposting box that's super fast, completely designed literally from the core up for my own use. My binds, my window management, my colors, my everything. I can change pretty much anything about the desktop experience I want, which was a nightmare to do on win7. Switched when I got sick of keeping 30 auto hotkey scripts open at once.

Powershell is pretty great, actually. Especially once powershell implements ssh support (it's in the books), and server 2016 hits prime-time, it will be amazing. You'll be able to use config management/orchestration tools to provision windows services and containers in a standardized way, with DSC to ensure system state.

I'm a new zealander too, I got the dreamspark windows but I still use ubuntu on my uni-work laptop and VM for when I want to program. I used to use arch but I'm too lazy to install it on multiple machines so much easier to just use ubuntu and change the wm and default programs.

If I wanted to base windows around using the terminal I'd be fucked.

Windows is actually more complicated by design but it hides 90% of what it's doing from you so I guess retards will be able to use it without an issue
