For some reason gtkmm 2.24.4 keeps giving me emake failed messages. Installing newer versions works fine, but what I'm trying to install requires that specific version. Any idea what I can do to fix?

It is a colaborative effort, anon. As far as I know it only runs Windows XP, and it started getting viruses. Since all my bro does it is play retro games, and any retro emulator he could possibly need I can easily get for Linux, I thought I would install an Ubuntu partition. I got part of the way through the installation process, and then it just fuckin' stopped with no indication of continuing.

Bored, I just reset the machine and gave up, but now it fucking blue screens every time I turn it on. Since my bro is on vacation in California, I have until Friday before he gets back. What should I do? Since the ever reliable ever accesible Ubuntu won't even fucking work on his shitmeister (Let alone Windows 7) and I can't find the XP disc that was used for his machine, what can I do?

I don't think he'll care about using a different OS, as long as he can play his retro games, so is there a reliable Linux OS I can install?

First off, systemd is not a botnet, it has no botnet, but rather it has an init system as part of the systemd suite. systemd is a project to build a standardised lowlevel userland for Linux. The project is pretty comprehensive and it delivers a lot of functionality under one umbrella. It does away with a lot of older, often undermaintained software packages, which were traditionally used to assemble a low level userland.

Which is where the contention comes from, as a system suite systemd is restrictive for Unix virtuosi who are used to tailor a system with wit, ingenuity, a lick and a prayer and a couple dozen of unrelated packages. systemd makes such knowledge useless.

The faction that thinks that systemd is Linux's Hiroshima, finds all the added functionality bloat, unnecessary and dangerous, as it is all under development in one project.

All the systemd jokes stem from the comprehensiveness as a low level system suite. People against it love to joke that one day systemd will write its own kernel.

There is a lot of FUD and hate going around. Some arguments do have merit, a lot of eggs in one basket is certainly true, but as with all things in life, it depends which tradeoff you prefer. Do you want a suite of well designed software, working closely together, so that system management is streamlined or do you want the complete freedom to tailor your own low level system with a lot of time tested, interchangeable components.

I have no desire to be a low level system designer, so I prefer systemd. I don't hate traditional init systems though. If a Linux system has one and I need to work with it, I'm still happy it boots and starts the necessary services.

What is a good way to organize my files under my home dir? For example, the scripts I make for the panel, or things like that. What's a good way to keep them?

Recently I ran out of space on my linux partition, so I finally stopped dual booting and nuked my windows install, since I haven't used it in half a year now, and everything I need winshit for can be done in a vm. My data partition is full of desktop.ini files, it is safe to delete those now, right?
Also, can I set up full disk encryption on an existing linux install? I can make an image of the system and copy dd it on my hard drive after the encryption if needed, and I also have all my data backed up so it's not a problem if I have to erase it from my hdd.

What's the usual way to go if you want an easy way to change a bunch of settings(gtk themes / resolution / font stuff) whilst rolling with a window manager like i3?

I'm currently just using i3 whilst firing up the cinnamon-settings-daemon and using cinnamon's setting tools to do these sort of things but I feel like this is a really wrong and dirty way to do this.

1) Is there option in the latest KDE to remove cashew from desktop?

2)In xfce , using banshee, i blacklist players from my sound menu (using dconf) , they get removed , but as soon as i start banshee or vlc again they appear again in the sound menu , and in dconf.
How to permanently disable this stuff from appearing in my sound menu?

3) When I click panel icons in panel that open their little popups (wifi, sound,calendar,...) , those windows are either overlapping the panel or they are behind it unless i open/close them several times until they align with the panel. Is there a fix for this , or xfce is shitty?

i have a jvc tv 24 inch that i am using as a monitor. it uses vga but i cannot seem to get native resolution to work in linux. no matter what i try.

i have to spend a while configuring it in windows to get it to work right. if i remember rightly i tried using xrandr with a modeline and adding the resoution that way. it wouldn't work.

the monitor also has hdmi but for some reason it looks like shit when used with computers. anyone have a fix either for the vga or hdmi? the resoultion im trying to use it 1920.1080

So, I am trying to install xubunty 14.04 in dualboot with windows 10 on my laptop (asus x554la). I've disabled hibernation and fastboot in windows and secure boot and fastboot in bios. When I am trying to install xubuntu installer shows me this error - "the attempt to mount a file system with type vfat in SCSI1 (0,0,0), partition #1 (sda) at /boot/efi failed".
There's screenshot of my current partition system. On free 30 gigs I've mounted 2 partitions - 12GB root and 15 GB home; also, 4GB swap.
What am I doing wrong?

Some programs like filezilla are not available for debian testing, only for stable and unstable. Should I switch from testing to unstable? Any unstable users here? What's your experience?

Need to passthrough my firewire controller to a Windows guest for like 10 fucking seconds while I configure something with Windows-only software.
I'm getting VERR_RESOURCE_BUSY when trying to start the VM, unplugged everything from the card, despite having unbound the driver, and unloaded (and blacklisted) the kernel module.
I'm using VirtualBox because Xen seems like a whole lot of effort to go through to passthrough for something that is going to take less than 10 seconds.

Greetings /flt/ I would like some clarifications on my filesystem/data storage choices. To keep the memes to a minimum I'm not gonna list brands, beyond saying they're NAS drives and not seagate.

I currently have 2 x 4 TB drives that I have in a single LVM. These are primarily media drives, only some of the data is critical (and therefore backed up on externals obviously). I am planning on buying 6 x 4 TB drives and a 64 GB SSD to make an 8 x 4 TB RAID6 array, 24 TB effective storage, and I want to use the SSD as a cache (and also as a dumb drive for /var/).

MY OPTIONS:
>ext4 with LVM/mdadm to use the SSD as a cache for the RAID6 array
>BTRFS RAID6 with LVM to use the SSD as a cache
>ZFS with an L2 arc SSD cache and RAIDZ2

Problems include me not having ECC RAM (and only 16 GB of RAM) so ZFS is sort of out. BTRFS is unstable on parity RAID and I'd still need LVM for the SSD cache, and finally ext4 has no checksumming. Currently I'm leaning toward ext4 mdadm/LVM because it's the cheapest option, the only downside being it doesn't have checksumming which I may need because 32 TB is a lot of data and bitrot could be an issue.

Shit. It looks like I am on UEFI, which probably explains why I can't dualboot properly.

I used to be able to dualboot just fine on Debian/Arch right after install too when the installers said it detected my Windows 7 partition. Ever since I formatted my SSD and switched to Win10 I can't get any distro to dualboot at all and I would need to reformat the entire drive and delete the Linux partition just to get my computer working again.

No idea about the partitions thing but switching to GPT will wipe the whole drive. I just know that I needed GPT if I wanted to do Arch > Windows and have it work on UEFI without any fuckery. I don't use BIOS at all.

Sounds viable, although if you're only getting the UEFI option on your USB it means you're booting to the USB in UEFI, or I don't know how antergos works. I've only done this with Arch manually.

Step 5, what do you mean by boot/efi? When you install a distro on BIOS generally you'd just keep everything on one partition except for grub and possibly swap.

BIOS/MBR is the best way to go for Linux btw, it's completely viable. You really don't and probably shouldnt use GPT unless that disk only only has linux and nothing else

Again, I haven't installed antergos before but in your situation for arch I'd do

>boot to usb in BIOS
>create one partition for root, one for grub
>install all of the OS onto root partition
>install grub onto grub partition
>boot to BIOS mode for grub, boot to UEFI mode for windows

Should I really worry much about security using a Solaris 10/09 system to host a very basic, script/database-free website? Solaris 10 is still supported until 2021, however I think to get access to updates you need a support contract.

I'm also planning for ssh/ftp access, which I'll pretty much ban every non-US/Canadian IP (and maybe western Europe too) from connecting to.

I'm at a crossroads between Slowlaris, which I would prefer, or OpenBSD.

During install, Cnchi has two installation types. One wipes the entire drive to install Antergos and the other option lets you install it to whatever drive and partition you want. Pic related.

In this option it requires me to create a root partition and an EFI partition. In this guide http://itsfoss.com/dual-boot-antergos-windows-uefi/ it tells me I can direct this EFI to an already existing partition created by Windows (probably the MBR or something?). But since this guide is for installing Antergos in UEFI I'm not sure if that's a good idea (I'm scared of it destroying my MBR and make me permanently unable to boot into Windows again without reformatting and reinstalling) so I'll just create an extra small partition for the EFI instead. The one other thing that confuses me is the grub2 install option at the bottom of the dialogue, but I have been told by someone else a while ago that grub2 could be installed onto any of my drives.

Systems that run from a live CD are slow and can not be called a full GNU/Linux experience.

If you are going to BIOS route, you should be given the option to just install grub the basic way

Ideal setup would basically be something like this (example identifiers ofc)

/dev/sda1 - windows partiton
/dev/sda2 - linux partitions
/dev/sda3 - root partition with the OS on it
/dev/sda4 - GRUB partition with grub on it

Ok, I think I'm ready to give Linux another try now, but just in case I do somehow screw everything up and get stuck on Grub-rescue or some other error where I can't boot into either OSs is there a surefire way to recover my Win10 partition? The last time I tried to /bootrec fixmbr and all that jazz with a recovery disc it didn't do jack and I had to reformat my entire SSD and reinstall Windows.

With grub rescue you can use its commands to boot into windows i think, just hit tab for a list of autocompletion. Other than that, you should really backup your whole windows partition.

If it's an option, I'd *strongly* suggest backing up e v e r y t h i n g, wiping the drive clean from a live usb, installing windows on BIOS , then Antergos on a second partition on BIOS too with grub on a seperate partition and the menu I posted a while ago. UEFI is a massive pain with linux.

Is this possible? As in backing up literally EVERYTHING so that the next time I restore that backup ALL my settings will be the way it was (program installation directories, registry tweaks, theme settings, etc)? Probably not though. I feel like this is a silly question. I'll just back up my most important programs and configurations.

I'm definitely going to wipe my drive clean and install everything on BIOS mode if this next time I try to install Arch messes up my booting, though. I think how I ended up with Windows 10 on UEFI in the first place was because I burnt the ISO onto a disc and installed it after selecting something like "UEFI: Windows Live CD" instead of just "Windows Live CD" in my bios despite my bios mode was probably already BIOS beforehand.

Alright, if all else fails I will wipe my SSD, convert it to GPT, install Windows 10 on it then immediately install a distro alongside it. All while sticking to UEFI.

What's funny is that when I used to run Windows 7 on my SSD, and installed Arch to a partition on a separate hard drive, everything worked fine and dandy. Antergos and Windows both showed up in the grub bootloader. Then one day Xorg stopped working and I could only boot into a CLI on my Arch install. Being the ignoramus I am I decided to just delete my Arch partition entirely and reinstall from scratch instead of just fixing it. I pop in a Windows installation disc and delete my Arch partition and rebooted and found out I couldn't boot into Windows either now. So I deleted my Win7 partition too and installed Win10 and here I am.

And for some reason, that HDD I had Arch on somehow converted itself into a Dynamic disk and now I can't install any distro on it at all without formatting the entire drive and converting it back to a basic disk.

I initially had to do Arch to Windows because I fucked up and deleted one of the 42 partitions that Windows creates and I couldn't get it repaired with a recovery disc.

I noticed that Win10 makes all these OCD inducing partitions on the installation drive. I'm certain that Win7 didn't do this to me and I enjoyed a single partition for my entire disk when I had it installed. In any case I'm sure I shouldn't fuck around with them since at least one of them is likely to contain the MBR or something crucial to booting into Windows. I'll just create separate partitions by myself to install all the linux stuff to.

but I have a desktop for running windows and actually playing vidya, my laptop isn't really for playing games so it runs linux with a windows partition (that i rarely use) to play a few games when im on the go

Installed Xubuntu a while back on my Lenovo laptop, so far everything's ok except the wireless networking.

Sometime the internet just refuse to work right after I start my laptop, despite the fact that it's already connected to a wifi. Browser will get stucked on "Looking up for ...webpage" for almost forever and other software couldn't connect the net as well. Strange thing is this only happen occasionally, sometime the internet works fine after I boot, but when this shit does happen I will have to reboot in order to make it work again. Meanwhile all my other devices and computer works fine.

I tried changing MTU in the options and editing the nsswitch.conf file but the problem still persists. Any ideas /g/?
