Out of the Python books listed on the wiki, which is best (or is there a better book that isn't on the list)? Money isn't a problem by the way.

>Invent Your Own Computer Games with Python

>Starting Out with Python, 2nd ed.

>Think Python: How to Think Like a Computer Scientist, Ver 2.0.12

>Learn Python The Hard Way, 3rd Edition
>>
doesnt matter that much just start and dont bitch by looking for the best way once you understand the basics everything else will come. if you know what python version you want to learn (I would personally say 3 I love to use python 3 its easy) just start wich feels best to you

https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Python_Programming

It's basic enough for a beginner and any thing else you check python docs, or youtube it..

the books he mentioned are super easy to get for free..?
>>
>>51513414
I was under the implication he was willing to buy books since he said money wasn't a problem. Yes those books are free, so no need to spend money period.
>>
I am of the opinion that Think Python is really good and Learn Python The Hard Way is really bad; I don't know the others. But presumably other people feel different, of the wiki entries wouldn't be there in the first place.

I used Invent Your Own Computer Games with Python without making games it gives you nice information

Or online courses

I noticed that a new edition of Think Python is coming out in around a month. The problem with waiting for that is that I need to start now. That being said, there seem to be a lot of people on Amazon complaining about the need for updates to the first edition. Did you not run into any problems?

Allen Downey is a pretty cool guy. I think his book is well regarded, but I think he is better known for think stats

Where? Link?
In any case, odds are that is just the paper version; the online html and pdf versions are the latest versions at all times.

>The problem with waiting for that is that I need to start now.
Then use the old version, and switch to the new edition afterwards if you like. Remember, it's a free book, you can just start with the current version and upgrade later.

More importantly though, why would you care about versions? This is not a topic that changes every other week. An old version should do fine. The only thing to take care of is the python version the book is written for; the first edition of the book used python 2, and the second edition uses python 3, which are almost but not quite compatible, and using the wrong version will make your early steps more frustrating than they need to be. (After a few chapters, you should be knowledgeable enough to swap between them seamlessly and correct for any annoyances along the way without any real problems.)

>That being said, there seem to be a lot of people on Amazon complaining about the need for updates to the first edition. Did you not run into any problems?
I am not aware of any such problems. But in any case, the book is on the second edition, and has been for a long time. That review seems to talk about a version of several years ago.

If you look on Amazon, you'll see it. It says it's updated for Python 3, but the author might have made other changes as well.

Has anyone done the MIT opencourseware computer science course?

I've watched a lot of MIT's ocw lectures, and they're pretty awesome. Didn't watch the CS one though.

There is no "best".

On top of that, some of books listed in the OP cover different topics. How can there be a "best"?

If you want to learn a programming language then find a book or tutorial. Open a text editor and start working through it. Asking everyone what they think is good is a waste of time IMO. Different people learn in different ways. You are a beginner. Find something and start! When you finish you will still be a beginner, so stop trying to get it perfect.

Are you the same OP?

Geez Anon. Stop wasting time posting and get to work on something FFS. Find a book or tutorial or class you like and just *start*. Asking a bunch of people on an anime/porn website for opinions on every fucking thing is a waste of time.

Just start.

The python for data science book that's a top seller on amazon
