Some of us need to do more than browse Facebook and complete art projects. I need a computer capable of handling modeling and numerical computational programs, as well as portability.

I'm to poor to into gaymen pc, so my thinkpad T420 gets me through. $250 for great specs, I can't complain. And the utilitarian design has grown on me I have to say. Though it still kinda hurts when I lug it out of my backpack and all the qt macfag grills give me weird looks.

Shaving a few millimeters off of the thickness means fuck all when you're trying to work on an airplane, a car/bus or otherwise sub-optimal environments that subnotebooks are designed for. It might be thinner, but it's still hobbled by an awkward 12''+ 16:9/16:10 display that destroys any actual gains you'll get from them over older, thicker systems.

That's not even mentioning the fact that subnotebooks used to actually be reasonably powerful and featureful even with a small size, and the cancerous "thin is in" mentality annihilates that utility with mindless "progress" for the sake of progress dictated by consumers who don't even need a subnotebook for their use case in the first place.

With respect to the physical dimensions and weight; as long as it's between 13 and 15 inches and under 4 kilograms, it's all the same as far as I'm concerned. Lugging around anything under 4kg is basically the same as lugging around the messenger bag or backpack while empty.

With respect to 'ugly' and 'complete lack of social awareness'; first, aesthetics have always been extremely subjective, and secondly, it really does not matter as long as it isn't quite literally disgusting. Does it have maymay h4xor stickers all over it and is covered in Cheeto crumbs? No? Then its fine. Nobody ever gave me shit over my thicker-than-an-inch laptop during the year and a half that I've had it. However, I've gotten loads of complements over my apparel and also for losing a shitload of weight and not being a fat fuck anymore.

Thinking that not looking chíc and modern is a dealbreaker is just as bad as buying a Thinkpad only because of the edgy /g/ contrarian aspect (which does actually happen a lot). It's a fucking *tool*. It's not for showing off to your college buddies, nor for looking like a counter-culture faggot. It's for doing computation. The thing with the best specs, battery life, and Linux compatability I could find within my budget happened to be a barely used top-line Dell Precision. They're kind of thick. I simply don't give a shit.

In my geophysics major, the computer lab has the powerful workstations booked for a whole fucking month. Then you've got the general use computers which are dual-core first-gen Core i Pentiums with like 2GB of RAM. I need to constantly compile FORTRAN and C source. I usually measure my compile and runtimes in 2-minute intervals on my laptop; on the general use desktops, its more like 10-minute intervals. That's why I have a laptop in the first place. Though being able to SSH into a shitbox, dumping a bunch of non-urgent work onto it and checking results two days later is always nice.

Ultrabooks and/or thin laptops have a tendency of not being built well especially in the sense they don't ever have as good heatsinks or fans as a standard laptop. Thinkpads are thick for a reason. Anything much thicker than that, especially op's pic, is dumb. Going the other way with it and having an old ass 90s laptop that's thick for the sake of it being thick is stupid. Get a getac or toughbook if you want to pretend that matters.

I don't like thick devices. I like PRACTICAL devices. Thinness requires sacrificing durability, modularity, performance, and battery life. It may look good, but it leads to a bad experience.
