Anyone with a s6 edge?

I like the design a lot, but are the screen borders an issue? Say you're just holding your phone in your hand and browsing, don't the fingers you're using it to hold it around the corners interfere with the screen?

I dont understand this statement, the phone has been out 3 months, and in 3 months it has gotten two or three OTA updates depending on carrier. It is also slated for 6.0 in December. And the Bloat while there is some, is much less than a year or two ago from samsung, and it can be debloated.

Been thinking about getting a Nexus 6, I'm going to see what prices are like on Black Friday. I've read mostly good things about the phone. My chief concern, the battery life, sounds like it was made void with Marshmallow. I have seen people complaining that they haven't gotten the OTA update from ATT yet. Is that just if you buy the phone from ATT, or will you be affected if you buy the unlocked phone from Amazon too? I've read that you can flash it yourself if need be. Does that require rooting? I've heard that rooting disables OTAs (why is that?) and I might try to avoid rooting if I don't need it for awhile, but I'll at least unlock the bootloader right away. Or maybe I will root quickly, I don't know, I've never had an Android phone before.

And it will likely be again $800 and bested by a US$120-250 (export market prices) Xiaomi phone in 1 or 2 years after the Galaxy's release.

Which themselves don't have any apps but muh games that really require dat processing power in the next 2-4 years apart from some games.

I just doubt that you need "godly" hardware for the very long term and should pay a huge premium for it.

I need a new phone that can be rooted easily, is on Verizon, has a removable battery and MicroSD card slot, is good for emulating up to the DS/PSP/PS1, and is nice and big with a decent resolution. What phone should I get?
I'm leaning towards either an LG G4 or maybe a cheap Galaxy Note 3 but I thought I'd consult the wizards on /g/ before making a decision.
>>
>>51522207

It's a 32bit phone.

The -when I last checked- ~1/4 cheaper Mi4C surpasses it, though not by a huge margin overall.

I have the money for OPO, not those.

I live in Poland, and can get all these 3 phones for the same price. I'm fine with Moto X looks and G3 back buttons.

I just want to best performance and battery of these three.
>>

Honestly, get a Redmi Note 2 / 3, or a Mi4c. Should be clear why relatively quickly when you compare specs and price.

But if you don't want to do that, either the LG G3 or OPO.

>>
>>51522506
PS: No, it's not *just* the fact that they're featuring 64bit instructions, registers yadda yadda now. Other changes also contribute.

Anyhow, ~10% less power draw, ~10% faster are quite realistic, even for plebtastic workloads and the phone as a system with more than just the SoC.

You might not want to pay a lot for that, but we're talking about the *cheaper* option here... so it's clearly better.

>>51522542
"only" - why? The point here is that you have 64bit software for practically anything, the CPU will work and use the advantages of the new architecture at least as far as the compiler enabled it.

That this software is not *exclusively* distributed as 64 bit binary but recompiled by ART (and maybe -if it's an app done with NDK- only shipping the 64bit binary to your phone whereas it ships a 32bit one to 32bit phones) is kinda irrelevant.

Though of course, Windows was different... unless maybe with some Java software. That one got JIT'ed a bit.

>>51522557
> I don't know if you've used xiamo but their software is bug riddled
Lel, they have bugs and they fix it in a week. They also have lots of features and lots of new features, unlike other vendors, so actually this is not extraordinary.

> their cameras suck in comparison
What the fuck are you talking about? Gimme a sec, I'll post you a pic from my old Redmi 1S in a moment (think cheaper -$100-120- and better Moto G), and the new phones have PDAF and what not.

Lel, no. He might make a more interesting shot, but you'll easily see which one (or even which series of burst-shot images) is the 7D MKIII on full auto.

Muh l33t skillz compensating for equipment is a retarded meme that doesn't even make fucking sense, it hasn't been true for digital - ever... unless you compensated with lighting and shit.

> and most people on /g/ aren't photographers.
Yes, well, then they surely can make do with a fucking nice PDAF enabled P&S on the cameras I mentioned. With bonus dual-tone flash and edge tap triggering on the Mi4C.

They probably could even make do with a Redmi 1S non-PDAF 8MP camera with f/2.2 aperture and generally quite decent behaviour (not even upper middle class, just middle class of smartphones).

Photographers indeed will still use mirrorless cameras or DSLR.

PS: The two shots from >>51522662 >>51522716 were not post-processed by me.
>>
>>51522786
>Lel, no. He might make a more interesting shot, but you'll easily see which one (or even which series of burst-shot images) is the 7D MKIII on full auto.
Of course you'll be able to fucking tell which is which, I never said you wouldnt be able to.

I said the photographer would be taking the better pictures.

You give the amateur the canon DSLR, and yeah, you will know its DSLR because it will be more accurate, larger resolution, much better lighting, etc.

However, the photographer will still be taking the better pictures. Better as in, show a group of 50 people one shot from the DSLR and one shot from the actual photographer, and almost everyone will prefer the photo the photographer took because he knows how to frame a shot, use lighting to his advantage, etc.

The amateur even with his fancy equipment, just doesnt have the experience to take good pictures. Sure some of them will be okay, but it will be the camera doing most of the "work" for him.

Take a night shot. Daylight cameras are all good now.
>>
>>51522786
By the way, I also kinda lost the original point... that anon in >>51522557 is really quite wrong about the cameras.

The Xiaomis deliver the upper end of cameras *in their price range*.

Now that price range usually is $300 or under, so it's not a Galaxy S6 or Iphone camera... but a Mi4C is about as close as it gets for $2x0, and the Redmi 1s/2 basically had the best cameras at $1x0.

>>51522838
> Better as in, show a group of 50 people one shot from the DSLR and one shot from the actual photographer, and almost everyone will prefer the photo the photographer took because he knows how to frame a shot, use lighting to his advantage, etc.
If the photographer isn't allowed to post-process the images they'll look goddamn awful as compared to the "impressive" HDR shots the amateur takes and you can forget about him winning.

Also he looses if they need to photograph anything specific (a race, soccer match, animal in the wild, landscape ...) rather than "find your best subject in this city" style shooting.

Basically, the amateur always wins in the technical quality of his shots, and if you don't let the photographer use cheap post tricks on a cheap camera or find "the best" subjects in a large area he even looses for artsiness.

>>51525245
I've found it's generally the consumer who has retarded requirements.

Removable battery being a common one, sure it's a nice feature, but it is MUCH simpler to fit a larger battery in a sealed back phone, that's why manufacturers do it, it's cheaper, and lets them put in a larger battery. If you NEED removable batteries however, there are phones out there for you.

Then you get people who NEED their phone to be rootable despite the fact they really dont do anything that requires root access.

Then there are the people who NEED waterproof/dust proof.

Or people who simply refuse to buy samsung(or LG or whoever) because i owned an s3 and it was shit, blah blah blah.

Half the time they don't even know why they have these retarded arbitrary "requirements" for their phone.
>>

>>
Sup. I am gonna buy Asus ZenFone 2 64GB/4GB Ram tomorrow. Is there any reasons not to buy it? And how is his battery doin?
>>
>>51525354
Yeah, I've realized a lot of this is true about myself.

I dropped my removable battery requirement after never using it the entire time I've owned an S4. I found that it was cheaper and superior for many reasons to buy an external battery pack.

The SD card thing is really only needed if the storage on the device is shit. I'd rather have larger internal storage. We're not quite at that point, so companies need to either have 32GB baselines with cheaper storage upgrades, or offer SD card slots.

I want root just because I always want the ability to do what I want with my device. There's Nexus for that. People just need to realize that Nexus is the only way to guarantee that you have this in the long run. Support the Nexus line if you care so much.

Yeah in my opinion, people really need to actually think about what they need/want from a phone, and what exactly it offers them personally.

Too many people buy the highest end crap with removable battery, root access, and mSD card storage. Then never fill up the internal memory, never even buy an extra battery, never bother rooting because you can debloat, and use novalauncher.

I would get the nexus 5 over the Moto G without a second thought.

Nexus 5 is slightly smaller 4.95" vs 5.0" but has a higher resolution 1080p vs 720p.

Nexus 5 scores better in both CPU and GPU benchmarks.

Sure, it isn't a perfect phone, but its better than the moto G in my opinion.

It's the same thing as the LG G2 which would be another decent option i'd choose over a Moto G.

I'm moving from Sprint to Verizon.

I currently have a Samsung Galaxy S5, and because I'm pissed about the lack of removable storage or battery access on the S6, I was thinking of just sticking with my S5 until it literally falls apart on me. Unfortunately, I've just moved to somewhere where the only viable service provider is Verizon, and apparently my phone won't be supported on the Verizon network. It feels shitty, but I've actually contemplated trading in my S5...to buy an S5.

Should I take the opportunity to get a different phone, removable storage and battery be damned? The S5 claims to have better battery life, and the only major improvement I can see is the S6 is a whole .04 ounces lighter. I've heard people saying the new Nexus phones are nice because they lack a lot of the Samsung bloatware, but I don't know if that's just hype-train.

tl;dr What phone should I get? If money was not an issue.

Just to clarify my point there are some genuine faults with the swift right now. Firstly the usb socket on the phone is recessed so only certain cables will fit it. The cables from my old galaxy S2 and S4 will fall out of the swift with the tiniest of movement.

Secondly there are two speaker ports on the bottom of the phone but only one of them actually has a speaker behind it

I cant think of anything else right now. I'm glad I picked this over anything in the same price bracket though. It's a great phone with a few stupid pitfalls that should have been fixed at the design stage. These sorts of things are to be expected though when you buy the first ever phone a company has produced and sold

What are the Oneplus phones like?
I've been looking around for a new phone and was thinking of getting a Oneplus One or maybe just paying a bit extra and getting a Oneplus 2, I'm not sure which to go for though.

I know the Oneplus 2's hardware is more powerful but I hear the battery is pretty meh, that the phone heats up and that it doesn't have NFC, which I'm not sure I would ever use anyway, but you know...

What do you guys think, should I get one of these phones or is there something else in the same price point I should have a look at.

learn what the bands for TMo are then look up the bands the Swift supports dumbass, DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH
>>
>>51528578
That's not true at all, the 5 is a piece of crap especially considering no new ones have been made in a long time.

Nexus 6 vs 5x is a valid argument, but not the 5 vs. the 5x. Not in any way unless you're a really dumb poorfag.

>>51528762
Any phones that are just international GSM won't even fucking work in the US properly unless they explicitly say they support the bands
>>
>>51528827

>>51528827
5x BARELY outperforms the 5. It's not worth it at all.
>>
>>51528893
*aren't
>>
>>51528902
What are you on? The 5x keeps up with the 6p almost, has a battery battery, same camera as the 6P even.

That, and it also isn't an old device that was made almost 2 years ago, meaning it's degraded and even slower than it would have been new.
>>
>>51528972
That just isn't true. Synthetic benchmarks clearly show that the 5x can't compete. And even in real life usage, the 5x fucking lags and chugs along even in basic Chrome browsing. And the 6p has a MUCH larger battery.

My goal is not to make the 5 look good, it's to bring light to how bad the 5x is.
>>
>>51529011
Fair enough, I just looked up the 5. That thing was a beast for 2013, holy shit.

The 6P certainly is the better phone

They honestly shouldn't be charging as much as they are for the 5x, and not used a processor that overheats and throttles

However, in real world usage I've seen in videos people say it keeps up with most games unless you are on the highest settings in the hardcore applications for more than 30 minutes.

I don't get the lag it seems to have in the UI. There's an update that should fix that. I'd think that 1080p vids and games would be far more demanding.
>>
>>51529035
Hey Locutus,

So I've got really small hands but still really want the 6P

Would this be a problem? The 5X isn't really an option because of the price in the EU. It's literally more expensive than the S6.
>>
>>51529052
So how tall are you? I'm around 185 cm and I think there is no way in fuck I can single hand the 6P unless I'm literally just browsing shit and sliding through the browser or something.

The S6 is a comfortable size to me, but for me, personally, I think I'm gonna go for the 6P here in a few months (On a S4 atm) because I want something larger. Who knows, but the 5x never seemed like a good deal to me. If Google were to lower the price of the 32GB by 30% maybe it would be, but it isn't at the current pricing.
>>
>>51529083

Moto X is pretty good, since when does it have 6.0 already? I've only seen soak tests for a few devices.
>>

The Nexus 5 has encryption off by default so it's not really a fair comparison. The Nexus 5 still has a shitty camera, and one of the worst battery lives on any phone.

>>51529507
Well you'll save a bit of money and have better battery life. But you will lose support probably next year and the processor is becoming a little outdated but not majorly.
>>
>>51529643
Hmm well are there any newer alternatives I should have a look at?
I've only JUST got back into really using a mobile, I didn't for a long while and am currently only using a Galaxy S3.

With that being said I'm already manging fine with such an old phone so I don't think the OnePlus losing support next year would be such an issue, but its always good to look at alternatives so if you got any good suggestions I'm all for hearing your opinion.
>>
>>51529476
>400 dollars vs 700 dollars
okay
>>
>>51529723
Well if you mainly use your phone for email/browsing the web/playing games then I think the OPO is perfect. It has a long lasting battery, a 1080p screen, and snappy performance. I think it's getting updates to 6.0 as well so that's a massive bonus! The camera takes alright (nothing special) pictures if you're interested in that aspect.

To be honest a lot of phones releasing now have unnecessary battery wasting specs in my honest opinion. The only thing I'm interested in when new devices come out is the battery life and camera because in reality these will be the only things the average user will notices that's different between all devices. You can see companies competing with each other in terms of software and gimmicky features like fingerprint readers but in reality all most users want is stock android with snappy performance and good battery.
>>
>>51529806
Sorry for the shit English here. I'm quite tired. Basically performance is great in 90% of phones released today. The only new additions are quick charging, fingerprint readers, full metal bodies, and cameras.

If you don't care about any of these get the OnePlus One because it still works really great and has a killer battery.
>>
>>51529806
All good points, thanks for that, think I will pick one up at some point in the next month, maybe there will be some black friday deals or something and I could save even more..
