I'll be using it for general use, programming, and gaming. I have a 1080p@80hz right now and I don't know how much of a difference getting a 144hz 1440p (PG278Q) would have for gaming compared to the real estate of a 4K. I've got $600 to burn, $650 if it's a shitty deal.

Alternatively, should I just wait for a 120hz 4K monitor to come out instead? I'm waiting for the next GPU series comes out before I upgrade my 290x, so maybe it would be better to wait till then?

1440p or less

1) Are you happy with AMD insofar? Do you believe the next gen of graphics card you might stick with AMD? If so, you may want to look into a FreeSync display.

Example: http://slickdeals.net/f/8292981
$300 for a 1440p 144hz FreeSync display.

2) Your $600 is right around getting a nice 34" or 35" 21:9 ultrawide monitor with 3440x1440 resolution. There's several deals on ultrawides popping up recently.

I was interested in this one recently:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=0JC-0007-00D81

The 3000R curvature is very pronounced, 3000:1 contrast ratio is awesome due to being a VA panel, the resolution is awesome, and it has near ~100% sRGB after calibration. After a good calibration it'd be awesome, but I decided not to since I wasn't too big a fan of the shape of the stand and that it'd be a lot of money to drop on a monitor that wouldn't have an adaptive sync technology.
>>
>>51501024
What size are you looking for and how much desk space do you have.
For $500 you can get a 27" 4k monitor with Free Sync. A 24" is about $100 less.

>>
>>51501024
4k all the way. If you need to game, downscale the res because fuck all runs 4k at 60fps
>>
not op. but I pretty much use a workstation laptop, if I want another monitor to plug in, is there any reason I shouldn't be buying a good one? eg. MG279Q /4K
I like to play games and need more screen real estate.
>>
Are $250 korean 1440p monitors really just binned $500 monitors with changed branding?
>>
>>51501024
at 4k you will absolutely have to scale your text. this works generally well on linux, terribly on wine and gives mixed results in windows.
it does look fucking glorious though.

Between these which would you guys suggest? The HP one at the top has 14ms response time so that is probably the worst for gaming, but best colors maybe.

>60hz monitors

your priorities are wrong, m9
>>
>>51502167
Already have a 144Hz one.
>>
If you can see beyond 1440p, personally I can't

One thing for sure though do not buy g-sync monitor, in two years nvidia will break and release driver update for adaptive sync. Plus spend those $200 extra on something more useful.
>>
>>51502167
Things is, 120-144hz doesn't make things look clearer, smoother yes if you can push that fps.
I use freesync at 60hz and can't notice fps drops at all in fo4, and they happen a lot in that game down to 36 instantly and back to 60.
>>
>>51501230
Yessir just picked up that 1440p acer from newegg. Damn good deal if you ask me
>>
Anyone got a BenQ XL2411Z?

How is it?

I'm considering getting one for Black Friday
>>
>>51501024
You can get a 1440p 144Hz Freesync monitor for $300 right now.

Was thinking of getting this for my gaming PC. The only problem I can see is that it's a Dell. Anything else is either 60hz, 1080p or sold out already.

Unless anyone can suggest something better?

How are BenQ's and Acer's?

Can't afford an Asus
>>
>>51502031
Dell's warranty all but sucks your dick so I'd recommend them. I'm actually looking to buy the 27 inch model for myself for Christmas.
>>
>>51501024
i bought a 4k monitor when my old 1920x1200 one broke
it's pretty neat, looks great. scaling can be a problem though. on win7, you could set it to 125% or 150% scaling, but that's gonna apply to all your monitors, so keep that in mind if you have a multi-monitor setup and not all of them are 4k. if you don't increase the scaling, you're gonna have to live with very small fonts in some programs. i think win8/8.1/10 handle this better, but i'm not sure.
for gaming, achieving 60 fps @ 4k isn't always easy. you'd definitely need a good GPU, something like a fury x, 980 ti or titan x. some games (like FO4) still run like shit and you'd need 2 of those GPUs.
you can always downscale though.
>>
>>51503627
Don't forget that most games don't even support 4k
>>
Do you think the MG279Q is a good buy for a 1440p monitor? My only concern is that 1440p will turn obsolete within the next year or two as 4K monitors get better.
>>
>>51504059
why not just get 1080p
>>
>>51504067
I already have a 1080p, I'm looking to upgrade
>>
>>51504059
I like it, true all around performer that works with anything, just check it so yours is from a new shipment.
>>
>>51501928
Yes. They generally use lower graded panels, which in reality doesn't really make a difference in terms of the stuck/dead-pixel lottery (personal experience).
>>
>>51502612
pls respond
>>
>>51503755
What? Most games run at whatever resolution you set them too. I remember in 2002 running games at 2304x1440 on a FW900.
>>
>>51502612

Pretty much an average 144hz monitor. It uses a shitty TN panel, and the colours made my eyes bleed the first time I turned it on. After some tweaking it turned out to be alright, but it's still bad compared to any ips display. For games and desktop use it's nice to have the high refresh rate, but most media would be better off on another display.
>>
>>51508464
Fug.

Are there any better 144's in that price range?
>>
4K and reduce everything except for distance. I can see nearly EVERYONE in Arma 3.
>>
Is resolution dependent on GPU only?
Because I could go 4k
It's just that I only have a high-end GPU
Rest of my computer is like 6 years old
>>
>>51508489

Don't get me wrong though, the monitor isn't bad or anything, just typical for a TN panel. I don't think there is anything better in the price range, but I could be wrong on that, it's been a while since I checked.
If you're looking for a cheap 144hz monitor I'd absolutely recommend it, but don't expect too much is all I'm saying.
>>
>>51508578

It's not entirely GPU reliant, no. Some video decoders may not be gpu accelerated, forcing your cpu to decode the video in 4k.
Framerates in games generally scale linearly with resolution, but your processor might limit the game sufficiently enough to give you the same framerate at both 1440p and 4k.
>>
>>51508713
I have never used a 144hz monitor before, so I wouldn't have anything to compare it to in terms of that.

My previous monitors have all been IPS, though.

I've also been told that TN panels are better for video games because of lower response times.
>>
>>51508817

TN panels can be better for games as they do have lower response times, but this only matters if your previous monitor had a fairly high delay. The XL2411z has a setting called AMA where you can choose to set it to "Premium" to get a response time of 1ms. This does add some noticable ghosting though.
If you haven't tried a 144hz monitor before I suggest doing so first, I was convinced after trying out a random asus monitor in an electronics store.
>>
What about 21:9 or is it a meme?
>>
>>51508940
Meme, it's just a comparable standard resolution monitor with reduced vertical pixels.
>>
>>51508881
I'm using a dual monitor setup, but one of them (a shitty HP w2228h) broke recently. My current monitor is a Samsung S24B300.

I would then acquire a 144hz and use as my main monitor instead of the Samsung, and then move that one to the secondary position.

I believe my Samsung monitor has a response time of 5ms, and my HP one had 3ms.

How bad is the ghosting on the XL2411Z?
>>
Can someone who owns or has used/seen an MG279Q tell me about its image quality?

Depends on quite a few factors actually. You can change the settings to remove any visible motion blur if you want to.
I'm running mine at 120hz with Blur Reduction enabled. I also have special timings enabled to make it brighter than it usually would be with Blur Reduction. (pic related). I also have the forementioned "Premium" AMA setting on.
There is a fair amount of ghosting if you look for it, but in games and general use I don't notice it, and it doesn't bother me in the slightest.
>>
do 16:10 monitors that are not 60hz exist?

>>51502603
As someone else who has that monitor, I love mine.
