The only things you'll be blasting in 4k with a 290 or 960 is in Quake 3 / Doom 3 / CoD 4.

These things are the entire reason AMD cards get a bad rep nowadays. The reference cooler is completely inadequate for that GPU's power requirements so it will run hot as hell and be noisy as all fuck.

If you're replacing the card in your current setup, I'd reccomend sticking to nvidia or you may end up needing a whole new pc in a month. the pc is so used to the nvidia hardware and components, and when you change all that, it can really throw off the computer and cause failures. If you want to risk it though, I'd recommend at least putting the amd card in a different slot then the one you ran the nvidia card in.

AMD designs GPUs, it is not in the cooler business. At the time of its release, the R9 290X had better performance than the $1000 Titan, for half the price. They could put any cooler they wanted on it, and it would still sell.

But that time is past. The card can now be had with good coolers.

Grab a Sapphire, Gigabyte or MSI card if you can. Asus build quality is good as always but their cooler is lacking as it's not tuned to AMD cards.

Both Nvidia and AMD drastically changed their architecture set in 2012. AMD swapped away from their VLIW implementation, used since 2005, and Nvidia swapped away from their SIMD implementation used since 2006.

Since 2012 there have only been incremental improvements.

I've been Intel/Nvidia for a while now but when I was AMD only I honestly didn't have a problem with it.

this card isn't worth it unless you plan to put a water block on it, reference hawaii cards have extremely high failure rates

Have had my 390 for about a month now. No it does not get very hot. No the drivers aren't bad. Yes it consumes more energy.

The negatives have been minor/negligible. Have to force 1080p on my native 720p display. Works fine, but had to tinker with clear type as Nvdias scaling seems to be a bit better than AMDs. Also, on some of my wallpapers I get this weird pixel flickering. Not always in the same place, nor does it occur in programs, games or videos. Again I some suspicion it has to do with the scaling. It's not the display, I know that for sure. I also do not think it's anything physically wrong with the card as it happens hot, cool, underload, idle. It could be the hdmi cable I guess, but it's unlikely.

I have one of these babies and its perfect for 1080p
Just avoid the reference cooler.

I have odd driver issues with my 144hz monitor and 290x. Sme games I am forced to use free sync.
