This is my final list of parts before black friday comes.
Can you guys be as critical as possible?

I decided on getting GTX 970 because it's more quiet and energy efficient than the AMD counterpart, although since I'll be getting such a spacious case with a lot of fans included, would it be more logical to get an AMD GPU? Most games which come out nowadays are optimised for NVIDIA, but I've read that the R9 290X outperforms the GTX 970. I still want no >drivers issues when I play games, though. I'll be playing vidya on Win 10 so I'll have access to DX12.

The CPU is from 2012, however if I find a better CPU on sale for a similar price as the FX-8320 during the sales, I'll probably get it instead.

thoughts?
>>
>>51497116
I am just saying that your goddamn case costs 13% of your build.
>>
>>51497116

Get the 8320e instead - it uses significantly less voltage which is major for overclocking.

The 390 generally outperforms the 970 these days.

jesus christ why
>>
>>51497168
You're right. I've changed the case to the Corsair 300R Windowed.

I actually saw it on sale some time ago but thought the 8320E was just a budget version of the 8320.

>>51497284
Do I really need a skylake? I mean, an AMD wouldn't bottleneck my performance, and leaves me with the ability to overclock it later on.
>>
>>51497086
>http://pcpartpicker.com/p/cg9sTW
It looks ok, 850 evo is cheaper and better but I'm assuming you have that 840. I'd probably get an sli capable board just because.

>>51497377
I actually don't have any parts right now, I'm on a craptop right now and I've been saving up. I'll switch to the 850 and see if I can find a different mobo.
>>
>>51497370
I wouldn't say need, Its better certainly. 8320 is about the lowest end cpu I'd consider acceptable to use in a build at that price range.
>>
Updated this 2 months ago or so, haven't been keeping up with PC shit recently. But I finally have spare cash ($525 atm, $200 coming within a week) and want to finish my build.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/89hRcf

Anything I could do better on? Don't want a different case but anything else is open to changes. Could go up another $100 or so if it'd made a big difference. Basically just want something I can play moderately intensive stuff on, already have the gpu but could upgrade in another few months so I want to leave that as an option.
>>
>>51497370

> 8320E was just a budget version of the 8320.

The two e chips AMD make - 8320e and 8370e - are cream of the fucking crop. They have low base clocks (but turbo high) on a 95w TDP (remember vishera is notoriously hungry). An 8320e will come out of the box wanting only 1.0-1.1v whereas a 8320 will want 1.3v.

My own 8320e does 4.7ghz on a mere 1.428v under torture loads - to get those non e chips to those clocks you are talking close to 1.5v (which is what the 9590 wants at stock).
>>
>>51497444
If you don't have any parts than get a 3tb hitachi deskstar instead of 2 drives. Get two 8 sticks of ddr4 3k, get a well recommended case like a nzxt 450, enthoo, air 540 or 760t.

Cooler Master Elite 130 Mini ITX Tower Case
Cooler Master VSM 650W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply
Gigabyte GA-F2A88XN-WIFI Mini ITX FM2+ Motherboard
AMD A10-7850K 3.7GHz Quad-Core Processor (using stock fan & gfx)
Crucial 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Microsoft Windows 10 Home OEM (64-bit)

Build is $477 before any rebates. I haven't stolen Windows in ages but that's a potential $90 less.

My intent is to do light 4k video editing (videos from my G4) and playing GTA V at low settings is fine.

if your just going to be emulating older games you probably don't need anything higher than a 550. Not sure what companies still make them but a 960 is for like new triple A games on high/very high settings. This would also knock a good $100 off your build

Noob here, I'm having trouble figuring out why the R9 390 (260-270) is cheaper than the 980 Ti (550-570 ), it's got 2GB more VRAM and at almost half the price (Pound Sterling). Would like to know as I'm at a crossroads for which card to be getting.

It fares well, not amazing. There are games that can definitely take it to its knees, as you can tell from it getting 30fps in Crysis and Witcher 3. I'm not at all surprised about that, but if you dial back a few certain settings to High instead of Very High it fares nicely.

VRAM is an issue though, for $50 more the 960 4GB is worth it.

Fury > 390X > 390 > 385 > 380X > 380...
980Ti > 980 > 970 > 960...

You're comparing two GPUs in two different price brackets.

Fury is mated against 980Ti, 390X is against 980, etc.
>>
>>51498374

Bearing in mind those benchmarks are done with crazy high end i7's (and often overclocked) so for the typical 960 user numbers will be lower.

OP do you know how many threads we have on building a computer every day? There are dozens. And every time it's the same thing, "/g/, new to computer, do everything for me and I buy" or the classic "I want to play videogames so build me a computer". Well OP, as a seasoned /g/-browser, I'd like to tell you to go fuck yourself. Have you ever heard of the Falcon Guide? Well then go google it, you lazy worthless sack of shit. And as I sit here eating my Subwayâ„¢ Tuscan Chicken Melt Subâ„¢ I come to wonder, why is there such a constant influx of idiot aspies? One can only wonder, but I'll assume you are either from /v/ or /b/. I would also like to take a minute to tell you to go back to your cesspool of shit and to kindly not come back to /g/ unless you have something worthwhile to contribute. I'm not trying to be offensive to you, it's just that I hate lazy sperglords like you. You do know that the internet is a very large resource with a wealth of information right? Well did it ever come across your mind that somehow, _somewhere_, there might be a place that is actually dedicated to helping people with their first build, that isn't /g/? Of course it wouldn't, because you're a thoughtless shitstain. Your specs are shit, your build is shit, and you're shit. But what else is to be expected of a cock-mongling niglet of such status as yourself? As I stated before, go back to whatever cesspool of shit you came from, and please, never return here again.

Do Black Friday sales on Newegg (and others) remain the same all week or can they get better deals on specific days? I want to build a brand new computer but I'm not sure if I should just get everything now, wait until Friday to do it, or wait for possibly better deals on individual parts.

So I'm planning build a living room computer for my parents. I basically need a decent browsing and video playback machine with a lot of space for my dad's music and mom's movies and shows. This is looking a bit into the future so I'm not interested in any Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals. I need recommendations for:

-Cheap but half decent CPU and mobo: I'm thinking an A6-7400K since Microcenter does mobo bundles with those, but I'd like y'all's input

-Good 2TB HDD and 120GB SSD

-Affordable and kinda quiet mATX case.

I'm trying to keep the budget under $350. Here's a half-assed rough build: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/M7jPCJ

had a *really* bad experience with newegg returns, even though the thing was doa, so I want to stay as far away as possible with my new build. amazon is much better about returns in general, are they good for ordering PC stuff? if amazon doesn't have a part, other good retailers?
>>
>>51502004
Not that I can recommend. I usually have my stuff hardwired, wifi is left for phones and stuff of that sort.
>>

I found that even after the few price match items on my list, I still saved about $50 on Amazon compared to newegg. But I might also have some hidden benefit cause I use my mom's Prime account.

I have prime as well so that's another big factor, but it seems like most things are $10-20 more on amazon. Probably worth the extra to just not have to worry about spending another 7 hours testing a keyboard only to figure out it's fucked and you have to pay half the original price to return it.

Want to build a low power server purely as a iscsi target.

I have a Celeron g1610t lying around too so just wanted to buy a cheap mobo with 6+ sata ports and get some HBAs for additional ports.

The 390 is comparable to the 970 in performance, so always go for the cheapest. The only drawback is higher power consumption but it isn't as big of a deal. If you won't overclock it go with that PSU otherwise choose the 650W model. Double VRAM should also help with high-rez texture mods. If you don't care about the looks/brand then there's a deal on a XFX one for 235$ : https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapcsales/comments/3tzoor/gpu_xfx_r9_390_8gb_235_290_30_mir_25_visa_checkout/

The sound card is not worth those 40+ bucks as the on-board audio of the MSI mobo is good enough. Same thing about those network adapters imo.

Also you could go with a cheaper case like the NZXT S340 and an optical mouse like the Mionix Naos 7000

>>
>>51514412

Basically yeah. The higher tier cards exist for those that want performance over just about everything else or are driving resolutions lesser cards simply cannot handle.

After all, if you are doing 4k gaming on a single card price vs performance is skewed massively towards the likes of 980 and fury, but those prics vs performance charts are typically done at the most common resolutions.

>>
>>51514483
Get an A10-7870k and call it a day. A discreet graphics card higher than an R7 250X will only boost the frames beyond 60FPS at 1080p, but 60FPS for a MOBA is good enough.
An A10-7870k works best with either a 2133MHz RAM or a 2400MHz RAM, size do not matter as long as you run them in Dual Channel (at least two RAM sticks).
Avoid Dual Graphics pairing with an R7 250, since you've might as well save up for a R7 370 or higher once you have a $100 to spend.

Due to complicated legal bullshit I have a fuck ton of money I need to spend.

Anyways, due to that, I don't have a budget with this, so: How will more expensive CPU's "scale" over time.

Obviously, getting like a 1000$ CPU right now isn't going to benefit me much over a 400$ one now since most things won't ever need that much power. BUt, how much longer will the 1000$ one stay not obsolete and usable over time in terms of being able to handle newer games and tasks compared to a more reasonably priced onee?

I won't have any good amount of money after this for a long time and I can't save the money, it needs to be spent, so I want to just get whatever will keep me competitive for the longest amount of time within reason. If the 1000$ one will make me be able to run games at 60fps at 1080 at the highest settings forr another 2 -3 years longer then the 400$ on can, that's worth it for me, but I need to know if it can.
>>
>>51514862
>how much longer will the 1000$
Probably a year longer only because it has more threads. As far as I can tell, those hex and octocore i7s have weaker single-threaded performance than their quad-core brethren if the same architecture. I think the 4960x is weaker than the 4790k per core, but the 12-threadedness makes it better for applications that use more than one thread.

I'd say that those super-high end CPUs are not worth the money over a cheaper i5 and a decent motherboard. You are going to have to upgrade regardless once your hardware becomes obsolete, so you're better off spending as little as you can for each build to minimize the impact on your finances.
An i3 + a $200 graphics card should be more than enough for people who don't use their machines to make money.
>>
Due that i got sick i lost some money i was going to use for my budget.

>>
>>51514862

>>
>>51514926

GTX 950
212 EVO
I5-4460
GA-Z97X-UD3H
8GB RAM
1TB WD HDD
EVGA 500B
HAF 912

Now my new build looks like this:
IGPU
Stock HSF
I5-4460
GA-Z97X-UD3H
4GB RAM
1TB WD HDD
EVGA 430W
HAF912/Corsair 200/300.

But i barely got the money, infact i don't have it yet, should i downgrade the motherboard?

So far i have heard(also read in this thread) that you should never cheap out in your PSU and in your motherboard.

would i see a significant upgrade on the 4gb from the 2gb? I plan on getting an i3 4170 - 3.7ghz
>>
>>51519117
Just get an 8320 instead of an i3. That depends on what you consider significant for the money. The difference would be less overall than the difference between the 4g 960 and the r9 380 at the same price.

>>51519098
difficult to answer, pascal wont launch with a ti card. 980 ti lightning will be difficult to beat for probably 6 months at the earliest until/if they release a 1080 ti. It still wont run 4k at 60fps.
>>
>>51519231
well the 2gb costs $179 on amazon and the 4gb also costs $179, although it'll ship by the end of the month. I was also considering the 8320 but I went to the i3 because I don't want to fall for the AMD meme. Could you suggest me a good AMD mATX motherboard????

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/qvpjTW

im thinking the bottleneck is the processor. ..
>>
Currently building a guture-proof gaymen PC that is supposed to last for years. I don't know anything about overclocking. Having said that, it would still be pretty stupid to not buy an unlocked CPU, right? I'll either buy a i5-6600 or a i5-6600k.
>>
>>51519277
Amd doesn't fall behind until its compared to i7s or overclocked i5 4790/6600k. Despite the memes they are actually a boon for the budget market.

How is AMD this good according to /g/, hell they're GPUs are spoken very highly of in here and if you are not buying 980Ti or Titan X people always recommend AMD.
>>
>>51519314
my i5-2500 from 2011 and 290 exceeds 30fps 1440p so that of course will. You dont need a 60 euro cooler on a locked cpu or a z170 board. That mobo is especially overpriced since you dont get m.2 gen 3, usb 3.1 or sli capability.

Wev had a dollar fuck up there! It just bumped up to 960 euros in price, getting the cheapest version of stuff I could get within my country.

>>51519366
What motherboard from same price range would you recommend with USB 3 support?

And I could change the Noctua to Cryorig I see.
>>
>>51519335
AMD gpus are cheaper or more powerful at every price point. I'd say even with the 980 ti it or Fury X is a wash. The only Nvidia card I'd consider is the 970 or a used 780 ti.
>>
>>51519004
just upgrade now mane, next gen is only going to have a focus on the current 4k fad
>>
>>51519377
Cryorigs are very good. h5 and h7 both better than a u12s.

I can't tell your prices, asrock extreme 3 or 4 probably. MSI z170a krait if you want to sli sometime.

oh boy it was so worth paying £4,000 for my rig to run most games at 60 FPS and less in 4K.

Same with the Asrock ones.

Changed to Cryorig CPU cooler.

Had to I mean I had to add new PSU since I got some 500W one that came with my Antec ATX case and it was recommended in Tom's HW at least to get 600+ one for R9 390.

Exceeded budget of 900e with 170e now that I added the PSU.

>>51519580
Only and only the mini-ATX versions are cheaper than the ATX mobo from Asus I have in pic related.

Do GPUs matter when playing movies

youd think they would draw the image differently and reuslt in changes?
>>
>>51520613

At face value they don't make a difference.
>>
>>51520684
Is it because it is CPU's job to open th emovie and play it back?

GPUs dont affect the colors or anything? Weird.

So for movies you want passable CPU and great monitor and whatever GPU?
>>
>>51520712
its because movies and movie files aren't graphically stressing, it does not matter enough, any integrated chip would get it done.

is it really that much better? im already worried because i opted for the 8320, i dont want to fall for a double meme :/

There aren't many mITX am3+ boards for a reason - those 8 core chips (especially when clocked up) put a lot of strain of mobo vrms.

i was originally going for an i3 4170 but i was suggested the 8320 instead, was that the right thing? Im not gonna overclock or even game that hard, so would opting for the 8320 make it worth having a shit board?

but i should be fine with that board + 8320 + 380 right?

my first build and im pressed on cash, and i dont want to fuck this up.

thank you.

It mostly boils dowsn to this: the i3 is the safest bet - it will give performance of its price point for everything.

The 8320 will either be around as fast as the i3 or in some games be as fast as an i5.

Do your own research to determine which is best for you.

How is this looking for a build just over 550$? I'm not looking to make a beast, I just want to play some modern games, at medium quality; at ~60fps, as my old computer has become completely outdated by today's standards.

I wanted an i7 CPU, but they're just too expensive for my budget. I'll be using a SSD to store the operating system, and a 1TB HD for most game storage. All the peripherals and hard drives I have on hand.

Hey all, I'm going for a 980 Ti, i7-4790K and HyperX Fury 16GB 1866MHz build. I'll be using a SuperNOVA P2 850W to power it all and the Hyper 212 Evo to cool the chip. Just four things I need to know off the bat.

1: What mobo should I be looking at, considering that everything I've picked needs to work together with the board, I'm worried about picking something that won't be compatible. Also considering that I'll be OCing and adding another 980 Ti come the future.

2: I know next to nothing about cases. I want something big enough and definitely breezy. I've heard mention of adding additional fans. Do I need to consider this?

3: Having stated my intentions to OC and SLI, is 850W going to be enough? I've looked into this and people either say it's TOO much or that they can easily go over 300W when OCing as it is.

4: Do I have to worry about the size of the Evo, I heard mention of it touching ram but as far as I know Fury sticks are shorter than Vengeance.

Anyway budget isn't a major concern for now, if you see room for improvement please holler. Thanks babes.
>>
>>51522807
If 760i power can power up OC'd Titan X sli + OC'd i7 (with watercooling) then anything from 760 to 860 watt power should be enough.
