I'm from UW. Some CS professors at UW are smart but terrible teachers/mentors.

>Exams are glorified IQ tests
>Professor jokingly tells students to heckle non-CS students at CS career fair
>Some CS TA's I spoke with confess they feel completely inadequate and that they probably don't belong in the program

Their CS department is really elitist and while I understand that the faculty is super talented, I wouldn't say they're the best at teaching CS to people who aren't already familiar with programming. I also got scared away and did engineering. Literally took me years to recover from my fear of programming.

I'm only 24 years old, though. I'm sure I could have been making more if I didn't go to school at all and just went straight into applying. Shit guys, I went to a pretty small university in Greece and now doing my MSc in the country's largest uni.

Large unis are for networking and creating connections, my "small and nonexistent" university actually had better professors and we were not 100 people stacked together, so that made it a better and more personal experience overall.

You're not your university but higher education is as valuable as you want it to be.

One huge advantage of "top" CS schools is recruiting. I go to a highly ranked state uni, and every major company attends our career fair and has a designated campus recruiter. Most of them send down engineers to do on campus interviews (much better for differentiating yourself than phone calls).

I know plenty of self-taught programmers and CS majors at lower tier unis who are more qualified than me but get rejected from interviews with the same companies.

Don't get life advice from /g/.

However, if you've got the chops, there are more interesting schools you can go to such as Stanford, Berkeley, MIT, and some of the Ivies. I had a full ride to the University of Kentucky for Computer Science but I dropped out and joined an HVAC union as an apprentice instead.

I'm getting full benefits and $18/hr right now, and it'll go up when I finish my classes and get awarded my diploma though.

There's just something in the back of my mind telling me I could've made it to graduate school with CompSci and done something interesting in the world of computing. Oh well.

Barely in the top 50.

I still hate my life.

Hello comrade.
>>
my schools not even on the list, but i'm kind of ok with that because i'm pretty sure i would have failed from a more rigorous program.

i'm happy with having a CS degree, even if it's from a shitty liberal arts university.

Where the fuck are you guys going for Computing and Information Systems where you claim it is so easy?

Are your programs accredited?

Among the required courses in the BSc CIS I did:

Data Structures & Algorithms

Operating Systems

System Analysis and Design

Finite

Stats

Computer oriented Stats

Discrete

Linear Algebra

The way you guys carry on, it makes me think you're going to non-ABET accredited schools...

>I have an IQ of 70 therefore cis is haaaard ;_;
>>
>>51513088

Not really, I put my time in, and I did well...

... but the impression a few of those guys leave is that they were basically handed degrees for doing Scantron exams, so I'm basically wondering what's up with that.

In my case, the only tangible differences between the requirements of the CIS I completed and the CS I switched from was that there was less required advanced math, and more of a software development focus.

Freshman at UW Madison.

Dual Majoring in Computer Engineering and Computer Science.

Ask me anything.
>>
>>51513153
Why did you take such a shitty path instead of master race CS + math?
>>
>>51513144
That's how a lot of IS programs are but CS majors get on here and realize they wasted their junior and senior years doing advanced math for no reason so they get butthurt and cry about people with IS degrees not being able to do anything except wash dishes.
>>
>>51513013
Yes I go to the best school for it in my state. It's not that hard desu.

Does this mean my CS job prospects are totally dependent on my gpa?

Learn Javascript.

Seriously, learn the MEAN stack and learn how in2 BST when you have your stupid whiteboard interview for your shitty junior dev position. Then from there, do whatever the fuck it is that you're spending $60k/yr to go to school for, breh.

You don't go to school to learn.

You go to school so you can say you graduated from *top university*

It gets you classifications and qualifications etc.

Does it make any sense for students aiming for academia? Maybe.
