Closed On-ear Acme... Something. I have no fucking clue what my current headphones are exactly, as I got them for free.

I barely ever listen to music, and only need headphones for vidya and movies. I play a lot of first person shooters, so I am often advertised surround sound headsets. I would rather not buy a headset over headphones.

Yes. It makes more sense than you little baiting shitposter think.
The actual problem is when people spend more than 300$ for headphones and more than 150$ for IEMs. That's past the point of diminishing return.

I'm not baiting dude, it just seems odd. At like 200 dollars, why not get an audio system with sub woofers and stuff?

/g/uys i really need to know, i am looking for decent quality earbuds but there is a problem. From past experiences I seem to have fitment issues with such earphones. Right now I am looking at a pair with comply tips. Would the tips solve my fitment and overall comfort issues? >>
>>51491324
The point of diminishing returns start at like $30, past that you're paying for 'tuning' because at $30 the drivers are very capable and can be easily tuned with EQ.

I don't think there's anyone who disagrees with the notion that past 300 you aren't really getting much for your money but up to that point there are models which get progressively better if you choose right.

I'd disagree about that. For very little money you get drivers that are well extended which you can shape with EQ.

The single largest factor in headphone sound quality is frequency response.

I am completely new to headphones, I'm sick of shitty gaming headsets and plan on buying a decent pair of headphones on Black Friday / Christmas. I will be using these headphones for a combination of listening and
gaming
so I'm not entirely sure what is good for both at my price range. I've heard the AD900x are a good set with a great sound stage. Tried out the HD598 at a local store and liked that sounds however it seemed a bit dark. So far I have been suggested K612, HD598, and AD900X. Any help/advice would be appreciated, thank you!

>The single largest factor in headphone sound quality is frequency response.
And nobody disagrees with that. It's clear that the highest fidelity frequency response from headphones is to be found around that 300 mark yet past that point it's just coloration of different kind. And the headphones around that price point also show consistently lower levels of distortion as a lot of the cheaper, "lower end" options. While the audibility of that might be questionable, it's still something they do better than the cheaper models. Obviously best bang for the buck is long gone but there's really no denying that you aren't getting a better product if you just pay more than 30. EQ helps at any price point.
>>
>>51491446
Yes actually. They're okay, just pay mind to the frequency response graphs they provide as well as the descriptions. Don't get anything super bassy and you should be good.
>>
>>51491465
wew. go for it desu. for that price they're fine
>>
>>51491609
>The single largest factor in headphone sound quality is frequency response.
Usually, but-
>For very little money you get drivers that are well extended which you can shape with EQ.
Stable response is not there for most cheap headphones, even if they have frequency extension. In other words, EQ doesn't work so well. Non-linear products may be a very considerable factor if you pick something really bad, these are usually considered broken whatever the price point.
We may be talking about a logarithmic slope of diminishing returns, but the stability of the magnitude response and frequency extension would be something to pay for. Just a bit more for a passable open backed headphone, not too much to ask for.

EQ is always your friend, no matter what you are listening with.

I just received my pair of TMA-2 last Saturday (as a replacement for TMA-1 with broken headband, they have since improved the durability, pic related). I got the DJ preset (S02) and they sound the same as my TMA-1 DJ, which is good. They are DARK, but not boomy/bassy like Beats and the like. As a fan of various kinds of electronic music and psych rock, stoner/doom metal I love them, but they're not for every genre (at least the S02 without EQ). If you're looking for something more universal, check out the S01, it's the most neutral and also the cheapest speaker unit.

It really depends on what you're after from your IEMs.

HF5 have great isolation and are mostly neutral but have the high mids pushed forward to make up for the rolled off trebles. The bass is a bit lacking in my opinion.

Fiio EX1(Dunu Titan 1) has low isolation. Sounds pretty nice for the most part. Bass is broadly lifted, midrange isn't too far from DF flat, treble is slightly elevated(canal resonance).
SE215 was pretty bass heavy, but the high isolation is attractive. Over the ear fit. If that's you're thing, go ahead.

The Ety's are considered neutral as it comes.

As you can see the Shure's have a bass boost and the classic Shure mid forward sound signature. They're quite dark so you may have to boost your trebles via equaliser, especially with older DnB.

The bass will still be crisp, clear, and have great definition, but don't expect much in the way of Sub bass since the BA drivers aren't big enough to push huge amounts of air.

Shures in general are quite dark compared to a lot of cheaper earphones with V shaped FR. I was just trying to prepare anon for that. I wouldn't say they were booming though, and they definitely have the mids forward regardless of how strong the bass is. They're perfect for /bleep/. It's just a lot of DnB tracks are designed for horn tweeters which are completely imbalanced and so they tone down the trebles in the mastering.

Easily rectified with EQ.
>>
Any reviews on the new Beyer 874's? V-shaped FR, no?

Beyer 874s were replaced by the 920s, which ha.org thinks is the best price-performance point of ANY shielded headphones. The Trillex GT-23's have a slightly noisier profile but they are another option for <$850.

I'm surprised nobody brought up the In-ears Stage Diver series (especially the sd-2). they're really good, and will perfectly fit most of the ears around there and are made in germany.

They're not really made for audiophools, nothing fancy on the design side and no cryogenised directional cables. altho I find them pretty badass. They're more for intensive stage use and really good isolation but the 2 drivers design is heaven.

Not on the cheap side tho, around 400$

That's funny because I have the 9927 and hf5 with me and the hf5 has more bass. Yep, you read that right. Resonance of ear canal or poorly managed driver break up modes. Difficult to solve the canal problem without an acoustic damper, which also helps the modes.

It is audible, but a limitation of mechanical systems in general. It is also used to improve upon treble extension, which is limited in most balanced armatures. PEQ solves this exactly.

This guy honestly lost all credibility after this review, and he's so fucking vague about the sound. He thinks FIIO EO9K is actually a good source and can't even hear the difference between amps and dacs (or so he claims). Seriously wtf even I can hear differences easily yet all he can say is "uhh it makes sound" that's what most of his source videos come down to now, because he doesn't have a fucking clue about what he's taking about and can't get any of the stuff he had in the past to A B against and just wants more people to send him free shit and give him donations, so they can confirm their biases.

Most reviewers eventually turn sour like this but this guy did it in record time I must say. He's realized what most reviewers realize and just gives 85% positive reviews and makes sure to point out a flaw that doesn't matter so the confirmation babbys can tell themselves it's a real objective comparative review and then can shower him with money views and shit and then the gravy train of companies paying him for shit and giving him free stuff in mass comes rolling in. He falls into the reviewer greed trap saying everything is 5/5 and every video eventually sounds exactly the same. Ok, i'm done ranting.

I ran a big experiment a few years ago testing sound signatuers of different wood cups in tandem with an sr80i driver, and the results were actually quite impressive. theres a HUGE tonality difference from woods such as cherry, walnut, maple and others. I finally settled on my favorite being walnut, as it gave the drivers just a special presence when presenting different voices. I would recommend trying some black walnut cups on cheap grado drivers if you get the opportunity.

active noise cancellation is a marketing meme, just get something closed that will make a good seal on your head and you won't be able to hear anyone when playing music anyway

>>51499491
If they have to be closed, Sennheiser Game Zeros, they should have a volume dial on the right earcup thats independent of system volume.

The only way to achieve actual noise reduction is through very sealing IEMs like SE215, or IEMs specifically engineered to be isolating like Etymotic.

The Powerbeats are ideal for me in terms of ergonomic design, but the price and quality are questionable for me. I also want to use them on my PC obviously. I can't seem to find a lot of good options for that shape of headphone.

Is there a good wireless with decent bass and mid range that's at least similar in quality to Skullcandy Crushers? thank god someone has realized the truth. etymotic rapes your ears in both sound and comfort. it's literally a cheap hearing-aid driver in a cheap plastic shell. and no it does not measure neutral despite what some might say with cherry-picked measurements. it has weak, rolled off bass, and an over-emphasis on upper mids. It is bright, not neutral.

This is dumb but I need it for my understanding.

So a DAC turns the digital signal into a analogue signal, and because after the transform occurs the amplitude of the converted signal is low, an amp will increase the signal to an audible level?

And for the good stuff, you buy DAC and amp separately?
>>
>>51493016
>wants actual knowledge and honest impressions from people who actually own headphones
>/hpg/
bad idea

>>51498724
I doubt you can reliably tell decent amps apart but I admit it's possible. there is no way you can tell dacs apart.
>>
>>51502351
>and because after the transform occurs the amplitude of the converted signal is low, an amp will increase the signal to an audible level?

It's mostly because higher end gear is higher impedance meaning it needs more power to drive it
>>
>>51502370
>is higher impedance meaning it needs more power to drive it
Wrong.
>>
>>51502385
Higher impedance = higher resistance. Higher resistance means you need more power.

Prove me wrong asshat
>>
>>51497048
shp9500 is like a brighter 598 with worse build quality and pads. lacking in bass, elevated highs that many would find fatiguing. still, it does have very good sound quality and detail, but at the now elevated price I would say don't get it. you could just get a 558 and do the foam mod for near the same price.

m40x is very balanced/neutral for a closed headphone at that price. leans ever so slightly towards the bass and the heft is there if you want to boost it but all things considered it is very neutral sounding and quite detailed. lower overall sound quality and detail than say the v6 but it's also more balanced. comfort is average, headband can cause a hot spot. new pads helps this and you're gonna want to get them anyways, stock pads are not very good. build is good, cups fold and pivot and the cable is nice.
>>
>>51502262
Because once the senn midrange offer is selling for 100 actual they release a new unit and jack the price back up to 250.

Higher resistance means you need more voltage and less current.

Did you flunk all your Physics classes or have you not done them yet because you're 13?
>>
>>51499317
I would say 558. but be aware they're bass light, most open headphones are. if you want an open headphone with elevated bass portapro, 668b, 681evo, and X2 are your best choices. the 558/598 is extremely comfortable, more than the philips and the pads are much better. if you want to go closed and have a similar level of comfort go for the xpt100.
>>
>budget
under 50 for a 3ds xl, would go with porta pros or the klipsch but I don't want them to break, or have to bend them

>>
>>51503897
they are not efficient, you will need an amp, the onboard audio on your motherboard wont do

i used them with an o2 amp, they are the opposite of neutral to say the least, the mids are MIA, taken hostage with no ransom

vocals sound like they are being recorded in a different room from the rest of the track, and the bass and highs don't even make up for it

the only thing these do well is the earpad material and soundstage, i can't even say they have good comfort because the metal build weighs heavily, shit non-detachable coiled cable meant for studio use, perfectly circular earcups which make no sense as oval shape is objectively better

it sort of baffles me how they have so many positive reviews

my current setup is a hd600 for home use and a m40x for travel/commute which i am more than happy with
>>
>>51503937
>vocals sound like they are being recorded in a different room from the rest of the track, and the bass and highs don't even make up for it

that's exactly what i was afraid of. thank you very much.

I don't even think I'm looking for neutral sound desu. I want something that's bassy so I could feel the bass but I don't want something ridiculous. also I don't know what this is at minute mark: 1:01 https://youtu.be/S1g4Uoqhhc8?t=59
