Github had more than 3 million registered users in 2013. in 2012 a little over 1.2 million had at least 1 repository.

So yes OP. Your intense, seething autism set aside, people do actually use that jew site Github.

Which one? Bitbucket is better established so it has my vote
>>
I use github for public repos (helped immensely when I wanted to switch jobs, got an interview everywhere I applied). I use bitbucket for private repos since it's free. We also use on-prem github enterprise at work.

This is literally what I do too: github for e-peen with companies and other retards, bitbucket for private stuff
>>
>>51488252
Underrated post.

Public repos go to github
Private on bitbucket

It's that simple.

I know c++ and java, functional and OOP programming, yet every project i've tried to get into/contribute in github just makes 0 sense to me

Github is for public repos.
Bitbucket is for both public and private repos. Mainly for private imho.
Github is easier for marketing purposes, while BB is for more mature repos where you don't care if people don't necessarily find your stuff easily and don't want SJWs to shit in your stuff.
For real private repos (aka repos you don't want people to (easily) read) host your own server.
>>
>>51488378
I can't blame you for not going to /v/ because it's a fucking shithole but how convenient there is an example on the front page
>>>/v/317585384

Actually understanding a full sized project takes time and effort. Lots of people talk about readable code, yet rarely is it ever readable to anyone but the one who wrote it without documentation on the structure of the program, which rarely exists. Even that takes time to read and comprehend.
To contribute to a project quick and dirty, the only way is to get a full command line interface and try to hack a feature into something by tracing its behaviour in a debugger.
>>
>>51488241
The major reason that I don't want to contribute to any coding projects that crop up on /g/ is because I don't want to associate my account with anything traceably related to 4chan. I know I could have multiple identities and have a different identity for a given repo, but one time while I was working on a project I noticed that my alter identity (the one I usually use for 4chan shit and whatnot) had some weird ghost presence on a repo that I was working on ostensibly with my main identity. it had no commits or anything, but it still registered as a contributor. I couldn't find any documentation on it, but I rewrote history on the repository (which is a terrible thing to do) to make sure that any *possible* reference to that alias was not present, and later when we made the project open source we dropped all the history so now (I'm pretty sure) any evidence of it is gone. but that crop-up scared the fucking shit out of me.

It's not the obscurity that bothers me (or you); it's the controversy. I don't want my realname associated with anything even tangentially related to 4chan, even by several hops. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want to be involved in any projects with fewer than 10 collaborators where 1 or 2 of them use meme avatars or any of that shit.

You might call me hyperconscious about this stuff, but a github profile is arguably how one presents oneself. It's like an active CV/resume. I have to try to be deliberate about how that appears to people that pass by.

>try to hack a feature into something by tracing its behaviour in a debugger

Can you elaborate on this?
>>
>>51488641
>perform action in program
>step into functions with the debugger
>examine local variables and objects to determine where the action you want to modify takes place
>modify the control flow of the application, preferably as an option
>submit a patch and wait to hear back if you broke anything
>>
>>51488681
This is how software becomes complete shit: modifying something with 0 sense of context. surroundings or side-effects
>>
>>51488133
>git
>having to pay

Oh wow, i didn't even know that.Seems people are dumbed down so much they love to pay for shit that could be free either.
>>
>>51488713
Which is why there is a maintainer who understands the software and can implement feature requests or reject and accept patches. Have you never encountered a 10,000 line program? It's impossible to understand every structure outside of the ones relevant to the behaviour you want to modify.
I've encountered these behemoths with dozens of structures and algorithms relevant to the modification, all of which I had to study. I've also encountered even longer programs where the behaviour I wanted to modify was contained in a single conditional statement with a single function after it that I had to flip around with no side effects.
I'm just giving a groundwork, no one is saying that you won't have to understand anything. Debuggers can just be tools for understanding program flow and narrowing down what you need to understand.
