Are Kindles the best ereader on the market or is it a meme device?
>>
Why can't it be both?
>>
It's a meme. Just use your phone.
>>
>>51487645
Meme.
Kobos are better.

depends on your needs entirely. I love it. has no issues with pirated books either.

Its amaznig, it has long battery life, i once left it on my desk unused for a month and it was around 50%, and no problem with pirated books
>>
i have the new kindle paperwhite and love it.

its a fantastic little e-reader. i have most of my textbooks on it and a nice selection of books i enjoy reading and still need to read. just finished reading forever war.

its battery is amazing. i can go about 24 hours of nonstop reading on a single charge with about 30% brightness level. so that equates to 8 hour a day reading sessions i can go about three days before i need to charge it.

its display is extremely nice. best e-reader display out there imo. text are extremely crisp and appeal almost as if you were looking at a real printed piece of paper. the text almost pop out and makes you feel like you could feel it. the texture of the screen itself is a matte texture so no reflection and the feeling of it does feel very similar to that of paper.

its very light weight and makes carrying it around a breeze. for classes all i lug around is my laptop and kindle.

amazon's store has pretty much every book you can imagine for the kindle. i haven't found a book that it didn't have yet. it also supports other formats like pdf's, doc(x)'s, mobi, and such. only downside is lack of epub support but there are a plethora of converters for that.

the kindle's UI and reading feature set is what really makes it shine. the highlighting, comments (notes), dictionary, x-ray, wikipedia lookup's, and translations are exceedingly useful. you can also have it show you page by page most common highlights and notes. for textbooks this is quite useful because its a great indication that a certain passages and/or phrase is something useful and you should focus on it because 2000+ other individuals highlighted and / or left notes on it as well.

it has all the basic functionality one would except. the ability to change font, font size, line spacing, margins, chapter, page browsing, and such.

overall i find the kindle series to be the best e-reader. amazon has done a simply marvelous job with them and backed them up with a superb store.
>>

Well shilled.
>>
I want a Kobo Glo HD but €130 seems a bit steep.
Doesn't seem like it'll drop in price soon either.
>>
I'm waiting for a larger e-reader to hit the market. I'm tired of shitty 6'' displays. I've had a Paperwhite 3 for 3 months and decided to sell it.
6'' is simply too small.

Hopefully Amazon will release an 8'' e-reader in the next couple of years.

>inb4 Kobo h20
6.8'' is not enough, either. I want a screen that's the size of a regular Paperback book, not a fucking smartphone.

Any opinions on that new water proof Nook?

Kobo Glo HD questions:

Does the light turn off completely?

How small does the text go?
>>

Yes.

Fairly small? They don't list actual font sizes, it's just a slider. I tend to keep it pretty close to the smallest setting when I'm reading.

>>51493310
Just buy a damn book instead of buying a device to buy books on
>>
>>51493347
>>I paid none of them
>??? how

like you do for movies and music.
you pirate them on torrent or ftp servers,
then convert the epubs and shit to .mobi, than you plug your kindle to your pc via usb and load them.

a book is like 3mb so 2 Gb is a lot of free books.
>>
>>51493347

> Buy a book

Except its cheaper to buy the book and the device in the long run after the cost of the device is amortized into the cost of many books.

Also they take up less space. One tiny device vs mountains of paper.

I do still buy books, books I really enjoy I have on a shelf, in hardcover form.
>>
>>51493347
This is /g/, all we do is buy devices that do things we have no intention of actually doing.
>>
>>51493282

It's a portable device that holds a huge catalog of all the books you've bought/pirated into one tiny package.

Also there are free epubs.

Yes, you can do this on literally every tablet. But using an ereader is the most similar experience to reading a book. w/o sacrificing the space you need in your carrying gear for a book.

What exactly are you looking for to have a book in specific?

>>51493377
pretty much this.
>>
>>51487803
A phones doesn't have a battery that lasts a month and the screens hurt your eyes at night and glare like a mirror in direct sunlight.
>>
>>51493199
who cares about battery life? you already charge your phone and other devices everyday anyways. and it's not like putting devices on their charger when they're not in use isn't already what you're used to doing with those devices.

the trade offs simply are not worth it. e-ink is garbage

>Who cares about battery life?
Battery life is the most paramount thing to your phone's fucking existence. (and in your case your fucking brain) I know you don't have a social life anon, but actually using your phone as a phone or rather as a communication device puts a lot less strain on your tech.

Also batteries hold half its charge as each year passes, so unless you have a hot-swappable battery or you religiously change your phone/phone's battery each year. Lookie here! whatever option you chose actually makes you lose money because you're constantly discharging your phone's lithium ion battery!

But I'm gonna assume you don't value your tech and throw it away at a moments notice when it starts bugging on you.

When I first got my kindle I only had to charge it once a month. nowadays it's like every two weeks since half life shit from lithium ion batteries.

But as far as daily charging goes. Do you really think it's acceptable to have to charge your watch every fucking day? for its 2 purposes; notifications and time. This is why smartwatches are the ultimate meme right now.

It's all about reliability anon, and not one piece of tech has that done right now. (smartphones are close, but it's not the definitive answer.)

>>51493709
Define 'great battery life' I highly doubt the first gen ipad has even decent battery life. Unless ofc you replaced it yourself.
>>
Kindle Paperwhite is now £80.
I may finally upgrade to it I've been waiting for it to get to under £100 for years and they upgraded the screen too.
>>
Is there going to be a Voyage 2 this month or should I buy a Kobo Glo HD now?
>>
>>51493627
Kindle Fire is a cool little tablet, and for $50 that's a bargain. I paid that much for my paperwhite.
>>51489171
I don't get you. In your first post you say
>buying ebooks ISHYGDDT
then you say
>amazon leeches off authors hurr

even if anon buys an ebook for 99 cents and the author receives 2 cents for the purchase, anon has still contributed more than you.
>>
>>51487645

Kindles are one of the worst e-readers on the market.

Terrible build quality, and a laughably shit interface.

They do have a great store(though to be fair anything can read books from the kindle store), fantastic warranty support, and a really good multilingual dictionary.

Of you are gonna pirate books it makes sense to buy a better reader. But if you are just a normie looking to pull something off the kindlr store and go, get a kindle.
>>
>>51496508
Then what is the best eReader for pirates? no budget but obviously am not spending over $300
>>
Can any of these e-readers have linux or some other free software install on them to replace the proprietary garbage that's undoubtedly tracking your reading habits? Can they be rooted?
>>
>>51496561

Kinf of a preference thing, bit I think Kobo H2O looks fantastic.
>>
>>51496611

They're pretty good for reading novels. Most of the stuff I read are technical pdfs and tablets work way better for those.
>>
>>51493820
10 hours full charge
>>
>>51497787

>>
>>51497801
Consistent usage 10 hours straight?

It makes sense if it's just for PP, PDFs, and general reading. But still that's like thinkpad futurproofing quality right there.

Good marketers leave their products to shit makers.
>>
>>51496656

I have an older model but have been considering buying the H2O.

It has a pretty damn high-rez screen and is xompletely waterproofed.
>>
>>51498060
The only time I used it near water was when I was rinsing it instead of wiping it.

Though that's the only >6" high-res e-reader if you don't count the Sony.
>>
>>51497974
Yup. Apple has had best batteries in the business since the iPod Nano 1st gen debaukle. I have a 3rd gen Nano that still gets 16 hours playback
>>
>>51498241

This is true.

I have an iPhone 5s for work.

Last week I went out of town for work but forgot the charger. I don't use the phone a lot (email and texts for work) but it lasted all week (Mon morning to Friday evening).
>>
They're the best if you don't mind walled gardens.

I just use a fucking ipad for reading. Yes I know it's not an ereader. Yeah I know muh glare. But fuck it at least I can read ebooks, pdfs, or read whatever file format and I'm able to do more with my books on merit of being on an ipad.
>>
>>51489006

kindle has the worst .pdf support out there.

I would recommend converting with Calibre. They will come out fantastic as long as they are text only.
