it's costly, and I think the majority of the ham community is too old to really embrace it beyond setting up what's plug and play. I think it has a lot of potential tho.

I think hams will be a dying breed in the next 25 years. so many old people compared to the younger hams. I'm 26 and I'm the younger of my regional club. fee years ago you had many teenagers and school clubs. it's saddening really.

Yeah. When I got my license I wasnt really sure what to expect. Got it back in 2010. I don't have a great setup (mobile radio with a diy modem) but it's enough to experiment. I've used APRS a few times and it seems like a really cool idea. I wouldn't be surprised to see HAM radio die off in the next few years, but radio itself isn't going anywhere.

the advantage of having your license is using reserved spectrum. if there are no hams left, the FCC will start taking back the spectrum for commercial operations.

I fear people will realize too late that amateur radio is not only about talking about traffic on the highway over the 2m/70cm band, but also the the digital /high speed data network that could be set up.

There is so many possibilities with the ham bands, and so little currently done. I wish hams would start building data network over microwaves and lte over ham bands.

But if it dies and the spectrum goes back to Big Telco, well, it'll have been a fun ride while it lasted.

I'd love to see more stuff like that. Is LTE over ham bands already a thing? I'd love to see that happen. It could become something great (Anonymous public file transfer over nothin but radio)
