Hey /g/

My mom flew to ny for a business trip not to long ago

When she was flying back tsa asked to see her laptop and they proceeded to turn it on and plugged something into it. (According to what my mom said)

When she gets back home and turns on laptop it runs startup repair. Ever since her trip she said her laptop has been acting up

Is there any way to check if something was installed?
>>
Why the fuck would the god damned tsa need to turn on her fucking laptop. Those fuckers are shit bags. Your mother NEEDS to talk to who ever is in charge or that airport to set those fuckers straight. This is absolutely ridiculous.
>>
Is your family Muslim?
>>
>>51483495
Of course.
>>
>>51483484

Yeah i got prettt pissed when she told me what happened. Told her they had no authority to look at her laptop.

Main concern right now is if they installed anything

>>51483495
Nope
>>
>>51483495
Yep.
>>
>>51483439
the tsa are literally subhumans and you should sell the laptop.

they refuse to follow the law and have purposefully put unsecured firearms onto planes

my firearms, despite it being super fucking illegal.
even after being called out on it they give no fucks
>>
>>51483439
The TSA is such a fucking joke. I'd say call and complain, but like with unions, it's pretty much impossible to get any information from a government entity, let alone getting an underperforming/shitty employee fired.

Just wipe it and start over, unless they put some stuxnet level shit on it it should be ok, and if they wanted what was on it that badly they could have just infected it over the internet anyway. Extract any files she absolutely needs with a linux live cd but then reinstall windows from scratch.
>>
>>51483439
Sounds like your mom was a victim of a random search. I think you should complain because turning on the laptop without any reason goes way too far.
>>
>>51483515
Main concern should be going back dude. Make them pay for a professional to look through her computer for l33t viruses dude. They had no right at all to do that. I'm not even kidding they've probably installed some cr4zy ns4 vitrus. You're letting them break the law.

Okay. Wouldn't you be crazy mad if they illegally searched/seizured your laptop and possibly installed a flackukin vitrus on it
>>
>>51483577

Isnt there a way to search for what they may have installed myself?

This was done at some tiny piece of shit airport. Not a major one

My moms old too. Shes like 55
>>
>>51483439
Yes you can look at my laptop HOWEVER you CANNOT turn it on.
>>
>>51483627
Dude don't even try to look for anything they've installed as I've said make them pay for a professional to search through it or make them pay for a similar/better one. They conducted an illegal search on your mother's laptop. Call the cops for fucks sake.
>>
>>51483630
Doing this once cost me my flight. Not even fucking joking.

In the end I was right, and the supervisor or whatever said that I was free to go, but I couldn't get another flight till the next day, and I needed to be at a business conference by then. So I had to go home, get my car, and drive fucking 13 hours to where I needed to be.

Now I just take a burn laptop with me if I ever need to fly.
>>
>>51483602
Oh, I'd be super pissed. I'd lawyer up.
>>
>>51483439
No, that never happened you fucking retard.

Nice guaranteed reply thread because no one on this stupid board ever leaves their house much less actually travels.
>>
>>51483439
Check the event logger. If it turns up nothing, then they probably just wanted to see what was on it.
>>
>>51483701
What is wrong with your fucking brain? Not only do they only check this on international flights, but it if 99% of the time international flights flying INTO the us.

All they care about is if the thing powers on, and your stupid fucking bullshit story never happened and no one on the planet should ever feel sympathy for you if it was true (which is isn't).

You retards can't fool me. I guarantee I have flown through more airports than any of you more times.
>>
>>51483808
>All they care about is if the thing powers on
They just want to see if your windows works.
If some weird shit pops up that isn't windows, they'll get suspicious and probably take your laptop away from view for additional screening.
>>
>>51483860
No they won't. They want to see if the machine will turn on and look like it loading something. They are afraid of laptops that are hollowed out and filled with explosives, they don't care what OS you are running and they dont have magical USB sticks that inject shit onto it.
>>
>>51483860
Oh no! You're saying that if I have a device that runs lunix that I'm screwed?

if so that was border patrol, TSA legally can not turn on the laptop, just test for explosives

If I'm not mistaken, some states (NY being one) do require people who bring laptops on board to take them out of the sleeve AND/OR power them on to make sure they aren't bombs. I had that happen to a few friends on separate flights to Cali if I recall, although they didn't do that to me.

Security reasons and such. Won't always happen everywhere but they've made precautions just in case.
>>
>>51484106
fuck bush for that bullshit
>>
>>51484051
it's also against the law to break into a lawfully secured lockbox containing firearms

it's against the law to place unsecured firearms onto a plane

and it's against the law to not inform the owners of said firearms when access to them is required.

yet the TSA did all three of these things last December
>>
The EFF posted an article about this. They tell people to not store anything, not even an OS, on their laptops when flying.
>>

Can't I just install a clean linux distro with a fucklong passphrase? They can rip my info but it's just encrypted nothingness
>>
>>51484502
If you don't want to cause a scene, I'd recommend you install Windows on the laptop and keep all of your data encrypted on a flash drive.
Make sure you wipe the hard drive very, very well.

If data security is absolutely necessary, then you can mail your flash drive to your destination.
>>
>>51484502
m8 if you install linux they will think you are some kinda l33t hacker. This is burgerland we are talking about after all

>>51484591

Mail yourself encrypted DVDs then? Sure they can rip it but it's just going to be a bunch of gibberish if they don't have my private key
>>
>>51484591
>except the usps regularly rips drives passing through
They don't. Mail security is actually one of the last havens we have. You need a warrant to search mail and that won't ever change. An actual warrant, too, none of this FISA secret court warrant bullshit.
>>
>>51484675
You also can't open checked luggage containing firearms without the owner being present

yet it happens
>>
>>51484717
>You also can't open checked luggage containing firearms without the owner being present
TSA guidance says not to use TSA locks on hard cases containing firearms. If what you're saying is correct, then either there's a skeleton key/combo for non-TSA locks (which as far as we know isn't the case), or TSA is regularly breaking locks, which we would hear about.

before you spout conspiracy theories you should check if it's at least internally consistent with the world you've contrived.
>>
>>51483439
If this isn't bait, it sounds like something was installed, or something was temporarily run that fucked up some setting accidentally. Or of course Windows randomly shit itself as it occasionally does -- perhaps they hard powered off without shutting down cleanly.

One workaround that doesn't involve DVDs, USB sticks, reformatting, etc:
>2 partitions, Linux and Windows
>GRUB defaults to Windows and doesn't display a menu unless shift is held
>when booting Windows, it hides the Linux partitions as best it can, possibly using an MBR installed Windows, GPT Linux, and gptsync to make only the Windows partition appear in the MBR
>Windows install contains a few basic normie things; if they think it looks too barren, say it crashed and you restored it to factory state recently

Alternatively, just make a second account in Windows you can show them. Disable all USB ports either in BIOS or by messing with the drivers. If they try to plug something into it, it'll do nothing and you can say "yeah, the ports broke a while ago, I should probably get a new one sometime". Hopefully they'll be satisfied with this and just do a quick look-around of files.
>>
>>51484768
>or TSA is regularly breaking locks, which we would hear about.
yep.

except i used a hardened fancy lock, so they just sliced the bolts on the hasp and crowbarred it off

came drifting down the baggage claim taped up with the hasp limply hanging off the lock
>>
>going through TSA
>have thinkpad in my carry-on
>goes through x-ray
>lady tells me to take the laptop out of my bag
>go "oh shit nigger don't tell me /g/ was right"
>do it

>turns out they just forgot to tell us to remove our laptops from our bags because of the x-ray or whatever
crisis averted

Did you report this? That's a serious violation of gun safety laws in practically every state. the media would have a field day reporting that the TSA is letting guns get flown around taped up in unsecured lockboxes.

Don't tell me you wrote the event off. That would not only be criminally stupid of you; it would be a dangerous precedent to allow the TSA to set.
>>
>>51484606
>not changing your startup sound to allahu_ackbar.wav
>>
>>51484849
yeah i reported it. they said "hurr durr u dont kno da law we need to check every bag with firearms no matter what durr"

I called the airport and the ATF and both gave no fucks

laws are for you and me anon, not for the government
>>
>>51484871
you should forward this to news agencies. the narrative that TSA amounts to security theater is a familiar one to them, and this is enough of a bombshell story that they would be happy to run at least an online blurb, if not give it airtime. It sounds like you have official records to document this stuff as well.

Letting this kind of thing pass is insane on your part. What if the tape had gotten cut or the gun otherwise "slipped" out of the lockbox? what if someone simply took it? Do you honestly think that TSA would admit in that case that they violated federal laws? No. They would insist they didn't do anything wrong. You need to bring this to light.

I can't believe I have to explain this to a gun owner.
>>
>>51484899
>Letting this kind of thing pass is insane on your part.
except i didn't

get off your high horse
>>
>>51484806
That's standard, you always remove laptops from carry bags. Laptops are complicated enough inside that their xray machines can't properly identify stuff inside it and stuff loose in the bag together.

A decade ago they always asked me to turn on the laptop so they could see it was a real laptop capable of running, since most hollowing out wouldn't leave it functional. They didn't make me boot the OS even. As soon as they saw the BIOS logo pop up, they waved me through.

These days though they just xray it and don't make me turn it on -- probably improved xray machines plus so many more people are traveling with a laptop.
>>
>>51484922
You totally did. ATF said they didn't care and you said "okay" and went about your life.

Or are you saying you *did* forward this to CNN/MSNBC/Fox/???
>>
>>51484938
no i didn't. why would i? i went to the people who usually flip the fuck out about this kind of stuff and got told to fuck off
>>
>>51483731

>>
>>51483554
Typical American ignoring the bigger issue and instead blaming the unions. Clearly this TSA fuckwit was told to do this shit and therefore wouldn't get fired anyway. You should be more angry about your government plugging usbs it to your fucking laptops.
>>
>>51484953
>no i didn't. why would i?
to bring some scrutiny to an organization that rarely has to endure any public scrutiny?

you shouldn't be allowed to own a gun if you're this negligent about someone else mishandling your firearms.
>>
>>51484843
If they make you boot it up to an OS, they won't pass a laptop that doesn't have a hard disk. You can likely pass it off as "Piece of junk wouldn't start this morning, I'm going to take it to get fixed as soon as I get where I'm going" though.

Easier to leave a drive in it with a junk Windows install on it.

I do a fresh base install of Linux before I fly. Then when I reach the other side I use Ansible to reconfigure my laptop and download my latest data backups, which isn't a lot thankfully. My laptop isn't my main machine so it's not a big problem if airport security breaks it. I pretty much treat it as disposable.

The TSA employs a shit load of felons. There's a list of the worst offending airports out there. Best advice is avoid them.
>>
>>51485328
Oh and if it's really valuable bring a gun with your checked luggage. You don't have to put TSA locks on the case (since it's a firearm) and if that luggage goes missing then the ATF gets involved and bad stuff will happen. Heard that a lot of photographers do this to protect their equipment. Since it automatically makes the luggage more observed and has more repercussions.
>>
>>51483439
Damn. That's what I am afraid off.
Even though I have "nothing to hide", I wouldnt want a random person plugging a random thing in my machine.
Essentially this means the laptop is compromise and needs to be scrapped.
Can you bill the TSA for a new machine?

The 4th and 5th Amendments to the United States Constitution override that.

Try using malwarebytes to scan and remove. Then uninstall it (you can use the week trial), and install bitdefender (the trial for total security is also fine). Do another full system scan to try to root out more. If you want to do another scan, Kaspersky is also a good one and has a trial. Just make sure you uninstall the previous Antivirus before using the next. They will conflict with each other.

I would still say that it is a good idea to use a professional service, since they have more advanced methods and tools at their disposal.
