Okay, so I havent used linux for about a year, last time I used it was Ubuntu changed to Kubuntu, the network applet was broken to shit and connecting to networks was a pain in the ass. When I was googling it was a common problem.

I'm at a different house now so I'm not on the network it took me forever to connect to, so I cant really upgrade. If I install xubuntu straight up is it going to be a major pain in the ass?

Yep, if your hardware supports it then yes, around 90-95% of the performance.
This technique is used outside the "industry" to play games.
You set up a Win VM with pcie passthrough and can play latest vidya on one screen and post your riced desktop on the other

Depends on the command, usually you can cancel it with CTRL+C however that could leave your system halfway fucked if you are canceling pacman or grub-install.
Sometimes it's better to just unmount, reformat, and start again.

It's also not fair, because $RANDOM generates [0..32767] and 32768%6 !=0, so there's a bias towards 0 which (most simply) you need to reroll to remove - sot's very slightly more likely to nuke your system than not.

You'd also need --no-preserve-root adding to the rm if it were GNU coreutils rm, because there's one last safety net. I don't think that applies to the BSDs, but I'm not about to check, and $RANDOM is a bashism/cshism anyway.

If not, by short circuit evaluation it will not evaluate ( rm -rf / ), which means that it wil not run that command. && is the AND operator which will attempt to evaluate.

If the random number is not divisible by 6, it will output lucky boy. This is their production server so that means a system IN USE would be ruined by this roulette.

It's equivalent to the 6 shooter roulette played with the 1/6 chance to blow your brains out.

Some mentions of MATE down the line even though I uninstalled Ubuntu-MATE and went with xubuntu-desktop.

Tbh I think I'm just gonna reinstall a fresh copy of xubuntu. I've had problem after problem trying to switch from MATE to XFCE and I'm sick of spending an hour trying to fix every problem that pops up because of the switch. The WiFi being on the fritz every time I boot up now is just icing on the cake.

So sometimes on start, the wifi takes a good couple of minutes to kick in. It won't show any networks, doesn't connect, starting the service manually doesn't seem to fix it. Usually only happens on resumes rather than restarts, although today it decided to do it on reboot.

Or the worst case is when it searches for every wifi network but doesn't see the one you usually connect to. Don't know what the fug brought that on.

I checked the xorg logs in /var/org/. Doesn't look like anything meaningful. Here's what pops up on startup. Tried reinstalling xorg to no avail.

Weird thing is that the "a problem has occured" pops up twice on bootup, not just once.

I'm not sure, I don't think there's anything wrong with xorg (with the exception of that first error, which may or may not be severe), the thing with mate is the real issue, especially as you said you removed it. To be honest I would go for a reinstall, this isn't a typical problem and you're not going to learn that much from it, except perhaps that a config is shared between the two DEs and is not malformed or something.

I tried openSUSE in my laptop (dual boot) and it works well but I want Debian now, for keeps.

How do I remove openSUSE and install Debian without losing access to Windows? (I need Windows for my job)

That's how my partitions look like right now. Two 30 gb partitions for Windows and Linux and the rest is a fat32 partition where I keep most files. What do I need to do in order to install Debian and not lose anything in my other partitions? is it possible?

This. The only reason Ubuntus and Mint exist is because 10 years ago Debian was not for noobs at all. But today, it's super friendly to install and use.

Debian is the most stable, "just werks" distro out there. Just burn Debian 8.2.0 DVD1 iso and enjoy. You can test it on a VM first. I reccomend KDE or XFCE when you get to choose Desktop Environments. Trust me, Mint's Cinnamon environment it actually further from your vanilla Windows experience than XFCE. And Mint is not as stable as everyone on /g/ seems to think.

Linux can read/write NTFS, but it uses it's own file system.

It means it will make tiny partitions to host a boot manager and do other technical stuff that you can read about later.

Debian is retard-tier now and it's as easy as all it's copies. For god sakes you can just install and click the graphic GUI and let's you easily dual boot.

Basically, what's been going on is this: for the last 5 or so years I've had a heavy, now old Toshiba with Windows on it. I have about 600GB of stuff, games, music, pictures, everything.

I've gotten a new laptop, it should arrive soon. I'm thinking of switching to Linux (probably Mint Cinnamon or kUbuntu) from the start on it. At some point, I'll wipe this old one and only carry a 1TB HDD of my stuff.

Questions.

1. I heard that my films, pictures, powerpoints, writings will have no problem being usable in Linux. Is this true?
2. What do I do with all of my already installed games and savegames? Can I run them with Wine even though I'm like halfway through a Windows game on my HDD already?
3. What do I do with the savegames all over this laptop? Even if I find them and put them on the HDD, what do I do on the new laptop so that my new games see them?
4. How good IS Wine? Does it in any way limit my gaming experience? Or can I just play pretty much whatever with it?
5. Steam. Do I just install Steam with Wine from the start or do I install it with Linux normally and them run individual games with Wine? I'm a bit confused, as I have Linux and non-Linux games on it, as I'm sure we all do.
6. Does Linux+Wine+Game sap my performance when playing that game more than just Windows+Game?

Sorta. Films and pictures are no problem. There is no free software that doesn't eat .doc/.docx formatting, and you lose some of the advanced functionality of powerpoint but it's viewable and editable.

It's generally best to reinstall from scratch. You can save and import savegames for most games, but you're pretty much gonna have to reinstall the games.

If they're truly "all over the laptop" you would be best served wiping everything and starting over.

I'm trying to remap capslock to escape on startup but somehow it just doesn't work.
I tried it with both xmodmap and setxkbmap, by putting the commands (which work if i simply type them in the command line) in all sorts of files which contents get executed at startup, like .xinitrc, .profile, my wm-s startup script. I'm using startx with xmonad by the way, but it did not work when i used xfce a while back either. At this point think that i have tried most things on the internet that claim to solve this problem but nothing worked.

How do I start looking for the cause of 4)? I tried systemd logs and googled for hours. Most results are different problems (auto-wakes instead of auto-suspends). I don't need 'spoonfed advice'/techsupport, just where to start looking.

it sounds like you might suspend it via GUI, then when you press the power button what it actually does (maybe, just brainstorming here) is it wakes up from suspend, realises you pressed power and hibernates (as it may be set up to do). then when you press power again it wakes up from hibernate.

if you use the GUI to suspend; try instead to just press the power button to both suspend and wake up.

also check what the power button is set to do (might be in the energy settings)

Ok new nvidia drivers + xorg fucked my shit up. I had it set up so only my 960m would be used and my integrated graphics were pretty much disabled. Current config doesn't work ok whatever. I use nvidia-xconfig, still nothing. I revert back to old config and just switch around nvidia and intel so it only uses my integrated graphics. OK well I can at least use my fucking OS now. I install bumblebee + primus. Optirun works fine on everything, but primus just fucking crashes with everything.

Even just primusrun glxgears gives me a seg fault and Dota 2 won't even start using it as an launch option.

Here's dmesg with the segfaults. I have no clue how to get primus to work. Or my old config, but I can do without that.

Hi /flt/, absolute beginner here.

I've recently got into a situation where I have my main laptop, which I use daily, and an older laptop that I don't.
Now, I want to install a small version of Linux (>8GB) on to a USB storage device, to boot from that instead of the HDD, which runs Vista currently.
What distro should I use? How do I make my USB storage device bootable? How am I such a retard?
Any help would be appreciated greatly.

A game russian roulette gives you 6 attempts, and in those 6 attempts you're guaranteed to fire.
This one doesn't work that way.
You still get theoretically a random 1/6 chance of firing, but it can happen after indefinite amount of attempts, not six.

It's a variable

$RANDOM

is a variable, you can check it by typing echo $RANDOM

The

$[$RANDOM % 6]

is a variable as well, but a slightly more complex one

Thanks, you guys are the best. One last thing though, do regular expressions also have that quality where anything that evaluates to not-0 is counted as true, even if there is no relational operator? Like could you just say:

[ $[ $RANDOM % 6] ] && ...

etc
without the "== 0", and still have it count as true so long as the the random%6 answer does not come out to 0? Or would that just be a syntax error in shell scripting?

In fact it's the same thing as

Yeah sorry, it slipped my mind to erase the second set of brackets for what I was asking.. I mean to say: can reg exp be used at all like in C++, where you can put something like

if (10 * 3)

and it means the same thing as

if (true)

because 10*3 == 30, which is not 0 (the only answer which would make the if-statement return false)?
