Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners

If you are serious about switching to Linux, use it exclusively for 2 weeks, avoid booting to windows for that period of time, or you are likely to start retreating back to windows instead of getting used to linux as your new home and working on making it feel comfortable

You can safely experience installation process and the basic usage through a virtual machine

Asked this int he last thread, but the thread closed just as I posted it:

So I have a question for /flt/. I have linux mint and windows dual-booted(i'm very, very new to Mint), and I only really use windows for gaming and work stuff(proprietary software). What I want to know is if there's anyway to run my Steam in say Wine so that I could point it to the hard drives with my windows game installs? Because I don't want to have to re-install most of my games.
>>
>>51475389
You physically can do that, but don't expect that to suddenly let you play every game perfectly. You'd still have to run the games through Wine, and thus bet on Wine's remarkably low success rate.
>>
>>51475389
steam runs natively on linux bruh, so unless you've got some windows only steam games shouldn't the fix be as simple as copying some directories?

It's highly unlikely the Windows versions of the game will work on Linux, even if there is a Linux version of the game.
>>

>>
>>51475177
okay, so I just installed it using the three lines they put in the link letter for letter and it worked perfectly
here's what I put
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/firefox-aurora
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install firefox

It succeeded for me, so maybe try copying and pasting that code into the terminal.

>>51475513
I tried installing it again with those three lines, it just says I already have the newest version ans leaves me with v42. I've tried uninstalling first that doesn't seem to fix it, but I'll try it again.

>>

Okay, so I havent used linux for about a year, last time I used it was Ubuntu changed to Kubuntu, the network applet was broken to shit and connecting to networks was a pain in the ass. When I was googling it was a common problem.

I'm at a different house now so I'm not on the network it took me forever to connect to, so I cant really upgrade. If I install xubuntu straight up is it going to be a major pain in the ass?

>>
>>51475422
Ahh alright, I figured.

>>51475439
I know it does. But wouldn't I need to download and install the games a second time to play them on linux after I've installed them on windows?
>>
So concerning OPs picture noob here, ready to do some googling and learn
and I failed

lets start from the beginning
this shit you can try in terminal

>echo $RANDOM
>13877
prints a random number
ok so we now try to do modulo 6 - divide the random number by 6 and see the leftover number where possibility is 1,2,3,4,5 and 0 when the number is cleanly dividable by 6

>echo $[$RANDOM%6]
>4
I dont know the function of the square brackets in here, seems like just something that allows us to put $ in front of something, so that we get value of the whole expression instead of just text we wrote
but when I google square bracket bash I get only talk about how its actually a test, an if statement which makes sense for the rest of it

so we continue, we now need to make some conditioning in bash,
if something, then do something, if something else do something else
for that theres square bracket

>[ $[$RANDOM%6]==0 ] && echo "fucking zero came" || echo "lucky";
>fucking zero came
>fucking zero came
>fucking zero came

still I only get this

I know that && is somewhat of a condition on the previous expresion
if <this part is true> && <this shit happens> || <otherwise this shit happens>;

anyway its NOT working, I am only getting fucking zero came all the time
anyone cares to explain whats up with my shit?
>>
>>51476289
try
echo $[$RANDOM % 6]

Does it always print 0?

I'm making a minimal chroot system, what minimal libraries do I need to do it using bash (pic related)? I already compiled ncurses, but I cant identify others.
>>

>>

nope that shit works fine

does
[ $[$RANDOM%6]==0 ] && echo "fucking zero came" || echo "lucky";

>>

>Have you tried fucking googling it?
i googled virtualisation a lot and couldnt find anything decicive pcie passthrough didnt give me anything concrete right away but OKAY fag i'll look some more

you could just tell me if it's effective, douche
>>
>>51476349
It has something to do with the spacing in the $[$RANDOM % 6] variable

[ $[ $RANDOM % 6 ] == 0 ] && echo nigger || echo white

Works
>>
>>51476360
>you could just tell me if it's effective, douche
Yep, if your hardware supports it then yes, around 90-95% of the performance.
This technique is used outside the "industry" to play games.
You set up a Win VM with pcie passthrough and can play latest vidya on one screen and post your riced desktop on the other

>>
>>51476013
I don't remember whether arch iso has a password on the root (..maybe it does on alternative ttys?)
however you could always do "passwd -d root" to clear the password.

>How do I go back or out of a command or delete something if I have made a mistake?
Depends on the command, usually you can cancel it with CTRL+C however that could leave your system halfway fucked if you are canceling pacman or grub-install.
Sometimes it's better to just unmount, reformat, and start again.
>>
>>51476840

>>51475267
It's also not fair, because $RANDOM generates [0..32767] and 32768%6 !=0, so there's a bias towards 0 which (most simply) you need to reroll to remove - sot's very slightly more likely to nuke your system than not.

You'd also need --no-preserve-root adding to the rm if it were GNU coreutils rm, because there's one last safety net. I don't think that applies to the BSDs, but I'm not about to check, and $RANDOM is a bashism/cshism anyway.

If divisible by 6, then it will also rm -rf / which will delete everything.

If not, by short circuit evaluation it will not evaluate ( rm -rf / ), which means that it wil not run that command. && is the AND operator which will attempt to evaluate.

If the random number is not divisible by 6, it will output lucky boy. This is their production server so that means a system IN USE would be ruined by this roulette.

It's equivalent to the 6 shooter roulette played with the 1/6 chance to blow your brains out.

So every time I start up my computer, I get an error message about XORG not working on 15.10. Seems to be a common problem that nobody has any solutions for.

>>
>>51479074
Where is the log for xorg located?

My WiFi keeps crashing too, but the just of it is
"Ubuntu 15.10 has experienced an Internal Error."

Title: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT OsAbort()

Some mentions of MATE down the line even though I uninstalled Ubuntu-MATE and went with xubuntu-desktop.

Tbh I think I'm just gonna reinstall a fresh copy of xubuntu. I've had problem after problem trying to switch from MATE to XFCE and I'm sick of spending an hour trying to fix every problem that pops up because of the switch. The WiFi being on the fritz every time I boot up now is just icing on the cake.
>>
>>51479172
What do you mean your wifi is crashing? The network applet/icon? Does the connection still work even though this crashes?

Usually logs are in /var/log.

Reinstall might be quicker, sounds like you might have some conflicts of conf files, dot or system files because of the switch of DEs.
>>
>>51479172
couldn't you take a pic of the error message or something? do you even know how to read logs, and where said logs are located?
>>
>>51475175

>>
>>51479300
reasons are your own, we dont really care why
stick to windows, its actually pretty great OS and the software available there is real freedom
>>
>>51479267
So sometimes on start, the wifi takes a good couple of minutes to kick in. It won't show any networks, doesn't connect, starting the service manually doesn't seem to fix it. Usually only happens on resumes rather than restarts, although today it decided to do it on reboot.

Or the worst case is when it searches for every wifi network but doesn't see the one you usually connect to. Don't know what the fug brought that on.

I checked the xorg logs in /var/org/. Doesn't look like anything meaningful. Here's what pops up on startup. Tried reinstalling xorg to no avail.

I'm not sure, I don't think there's anything wrong with xorg (with the exception of that first error, which may or may not be severe), the thing with mate is the real issue, especially as you said you removed it. To be honest I would go for a reinstall, this isn't a typical problem and you're not going to learn that much from it, except perhaps that a config is shared between the two DEs and is not malformed or something.

Hey guys:

I tried openSUSE in my laptop (dual boot) and it works well but I want Debian now, for keeps.

How do I remove openSUSE and install Debian without losing access to Windows? (I need Windows for my job)

That's how my partitions look like right now. Two 30 gb partitions for Windows and Linux and the rest is a fat32 partition where I keep most files. What do I need to do in order to install Debian and not lose anything in my other partitions? is it possible?

Thanks in advance

Noob here.

I know Linux is very lightweight, so is good to use on old computers.

But what about applications? Are they lightweight too? Say I open 30 tabs on firefox while watching a video or doing some photo editing.

Is it going to be faster doing that on Linux than on Windows?

that's false analogy. first, you can not compare knowledge and money. second, Bugatti is targeting riches on purpose while linux is actually targeting the random users for years now (ubuntu, fedora, mint, steamos, ...) and despite that, it's still barely used. steamos and steambox launch is now considered a massive failure, no media talked about it excepting arstechnica which proved that steam os is shit compared to windows 10.

This. The only reason Ubuntus and Mint exist is because 10 years ago Debian was not for noobs at all. But today, it's super friendly to install and use.

Debian is the most stable, "just werks" distro out there. Just burn Debian 8.2.0 DVD1 iso and enjoy. You can test it on a VM first. I reccomend KDE or XFCE when you get to choose Desktop Environments. Trust me, Mint's Cinnamon environment it actually further from your vanilla Windows experience than XFCE. And Mint is not as stable as everyone on /g/ seems to think.

I recomend 3 partitions: 1 for windows and relevant windows apps (maybe 100 gb? it depends on how many apps you got), 1 for Linux (40 GB should be enough) and the rest an NTFS partition for random files/additional software.

Whatever Linux installation you use is going to make further partitions. Don't freak out, it's for your own good.

It means it will make tiny partitions to host a boot manager and do other technical stuff that you can read about later.

from what I've learned so far, it's a comparison that if the function there is wholly divisible by six the machine will delete everything critical to the computer's computation, if it computes anything else, and it's not divisible by six, then the console will log that you got lucky. Basically, what's been going on is this: for the last 5 or so years I've had a heavy, now old Toshiba with Windows on it. I have about 600GB of stuff, games, music, pictures, everything.

I've gotten a new laptop, it should arrive soon. I'm thinking of switching to Linux (probably Mint Cinnamon or kUbuntu) from the start on it. At some point, I'll wipe this old one and only carry a 1TB HDD of my stuff.

Questions.

1. I heard that my films, pictures, powerpoints, writings will have no problem being usable in Linux. Is this true?
2. What do I do with all of my already installed games and savegames? Can I run them with Wine even though I'm like halfway through a Windows game on my HDD already?
3. What do I do with the savegames all over this laptop? Even if I find them and put them on the HDD, what do I do on the new laptop so that my new games see them?
4. How good IS Wine? Does it in any way limit my gaming experience? Or can I just play pretty much whatever with it?
5. Steam. Do I just install Steam with Wine from the start or do I install it with Linux normally and them run individual games with Wine? I'm a bit confused, as I have Linux and non-Linux games on it, as I'm sure we all do.
6. Does Linux+Wine+Game sap my performance when playing that game more than just Windows+Game?
7. Partitions (potentially RTFM) - When I first install Linux, do I get to declare how much space I want on each partition? I'm sick of having 30GB on C: and it getting clogged with Windows. Can I just have one big ol' partition and that's that?
8. Will dual-booting with Windows cancel some of the benefits of Linux, mainly the tinfoil ones?
9. Does Wine itself nullify some of Linux' benefits in any way?
10. Does all Ubuntu-related stuff just kind of apply to Mint as well? What about kUbuntu?
11. What about file systems? Is it a choice what I get? Does it make a difference?
>>
>>51484351
I didn't want to make it sound like a bad thing but rather wanted to make it sound like I'm patronizing that anon.

new here trying to make mount points for my external drive and thumb drives. It's as easy as sudo mkdir; sudo chown right? I'm the only one with access to my laptop so i probably don't even need to worry. Probably worth mentioning that these usb drives regularly get mounted on 2 other computers, one of them running windows 10. I'll rtfm here soon probably.
>>
>>51484529
1. No
2. Hell no
3. backup. Put them in the same location in new laptop, you'll be fine.
4. It will suck.
5. Steam has installers for some distros (Ubuntu for instance). You need to see detailed instructions later. It's a bad idea to game using WINE.
6. See 4.
7. If you want to use just linux then yes, you can have only one partition. If you want to dual boot, you need more.
8. No.
9. No.
10. All those distros suck. Get Debian.
11. You can choose, but just leave it like it suggests. You're a noob, don't mess with filesystems if you don't need to.
>>
>>51484529
1. You need the software to read the files, but otherwise, yes
2. See earlier in the thread, someone asked the same question
3. If you're using steam you can sync them to the steam cloud and retrieve them after the change
4.Wine is pretty much fine for playing games, with a little configuration
5. You could probably just run the games through wine without installing steam
6. Not on a noticeable degree, if at all
7. You can change the partition sizes at will
8. No
9. No
10. Some of it does, some of it doesn't. It really depends on which part of it you're talking about
11. You can make a choice, but you should probably go with the default if you're new to file systems

>1. I heard that my films, pictures, powerpoints, writings will have no problem being usable in Linux. Is this true?
Sorta. Films and pictures are no problem. There is no free software that doesn't eat .doc/.docx formatting, and you lose some of the advanced functionality of powerpoint but it's viewable and editable.
>2. What do I do with all of my already installed games and savegames? Can I run them with Wine even though I'm like halfway through a Windows game on my HDD already?
It's generally best to reinstall from scratch. You can save and import savegames for most games, but you're pretty much gonna have to reinstall the games.
>3. What do I do with the savegames all over this laptop? Even if I find them and put them on the HDD, what do I do on the new laptop so that my new games see them?
If they're truly "all over the laptop" you would be best served wiping everything and starting over.
>4. How good IS Wine? Does it in any way limit my gaming experience? Or can I just play pretty much whatever with it?
It has a few issues, but overall is a 7-8/10.
Depends on the game and how much support that specific game got. Sometimes yes by a lot, sometimes it will run better than on Windows.

>>
>>51484529
1. that works fine
2. I could play old games (diablo 2 and age of) directly with wine, using the installed game in my windows partition, but not every games will works (they mostly won't). About save, you can still import them easily.
4.The few games I play with playonlinux (which use wine) are battle.net games. They run. They aren't perfect, but they run and I can play with friends without any issues. The graphics have to be in minimum for hots.
5. You just install steam, and play games available for linux. If you wnat to play non linux games, install them individually with playonlinux.
6. what the two other guys said are bullshit. Games that you run with wine doesn't run as good as on windows. The few games that will run better are old games (like diablo, age of, warcraft, etc.). Recent games will run like shit. They are playable, you'll have decent fps, but you'll have to lower the graphic quality.
9. no.
10. it's not a debate for noobs. Some people says yes, other says no, but most people doesn't even understand what's wrong with ubuntu and say garbage. "Hating" ubuntu is more about ethic than botnet or bloated software. They don't contribute to the open source community, push their own technologies (mir, launchpad, etc.), and that's harmful to the community. They also don't respect the free licenses and didn't released the source code of some programs (when they did it was years after the first release) and their bullshit stuff with free license create issues for the ubuntu based distribution (mint or kubuntu). Don't think about it, use any distribution you want, even ubuntu. They are fine, even if I told you stuff I dislike with them, they do somehow a good job and provide a good distributions for newbies.
11. you can read
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Partitioning
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/File_systems
and wikipedia. Arch wiki is a good source of information whatever your distribution.

I'm trying to remap capslock to escape on startup but somehow it just doesn't work.
I tried it with both xmodmap and setxkbmap, by putting the commands (which work if i simply type them in the command line) in all sorts of files which contents get executed at startup, like .xinitrc, .profile, my wm-s startup script. I'm using startx with xmonad by the way, but it did not work when i used xfce a while back either. At this point think that i have tried most things on the internet that claim to solve this problem but nothing worked.

Any new ideas?

This shit is driving me so mad, does anyone know where to start looking for it:

1) pm-suspend
2) press power button to wake
3) laptop wakes
4) suspends again after 1 second
5) press power button again
6) laptop stays awake and now I can use it

How do I start looking for the cause of 4)? I tried systemd logs and googled for hours. Most results are different problems (auto-wakes instead of auto-suspends). I don't need 'spoonfed advice'/techsupport, just where to start looking.
Ubuntu 15.04 btw

GUYS

1. i want to install ubantoo loonix
2. currently got a hacktintosh + win8 dual boot setup on my hard drive
3. would install ubantoo loonix on my newly bought SSD that i hooked up to my rig
4. can i just do that without any preparation or is there a chance it will fuck with the bootloader and other shit on my main HD?

i mean i guess it should work but ... idk
>>
>>51487293
idk but there must be something different between the first suspend state (after 1) and the second one (after 4). how do you suspend it the first time?

it sounds like you might suspend it via GUI, then when you press the power button what it actually does (maybe, just brainstorming here) is it wakes up from suspend, realises you pressed power and hibernates (as it may be set up to do). then when you press power again it wakes up from hibernate.

if you use the GUI to suspend; try instead to just press the power button to both suspend and wake up.

also check what the power button is set to do (might be in the energy settings)

Is there any reason not to?

it's not needed, but it's free. Also has the foundation's stamp of approval nd shit if that matters.
It's for absolute beginners, and if you've spent more than an hour running linux you'll be bored to tears. Stick with the book and gnu, also http://www.tldp.org/index.html

http://www.tldp.org/LDP/abs/abs-guide.pdf is a good reference.

But in general the best way to learn to is to have some sort of script/problem you need to solve, and then figure it out how to do it in bash. I learned at work so I don't really have a good online equivalent.

Ok new nvidia drivers + xorg fucked my shit up. I had it set up so only my 960m would be used and my integrated graphics were pretty much disabled. Current config doesn't work ok whatever. I use nvidia-xconfig, still nothing. I revert back to old config and just switch around nvidia and intel so it only uses my integrated graphics. OK well I can at least use my fucking OS now. I install bumblebee + primus. Optirun works fine on everything, but primus just fucking crashes with everything.

Even just primusrun glxgears gives me a seg fault and Dota 2 won't even start using it as an launch option.

Here's dmesg with the segfaults. I have no clue how to get primus to work. Or my old config, but I can do without that.
>>
>>51489153
Also using optirun instead isn't really an option when the performance hit is so fucking bad, like not even 60fps on the same settings I had before.

Hi /flt/, absolute beginner here.

I've recently got into a situation where I have my main laptop, which I use daily, and an older laptop that I don't.
Now, I want to install a small version of Linux (>8GB) on to a USB storage device, to boot from that instead of the HDD, which runs Vista currently.
What distro should I use? How do I make my USB storage device bootable? How am I such a retard?
Any help would be appreciated greatly.
>>
Just woke up.
I literally had a fucking nightmare about this shit.
>>
>>51490157
Usually whatever distro you choose has specific instructions in order to make a bootable USB. If you're and absolute noob you should go for friendly debian-based distros, like Mint or Ubuntu (prefer Xubuntu/Kubuntu). You should get the isos first and try them using a virtual machine before anything.
>>
For some reason palemoon isn't using hardware acceleration properly.

I'm using fglrx, and glxinfo shows hardware acceleration working, but in about:support it shows
GPU Accelerated Windows 0/1 Basic

I think the cause might be that it's using
4.5.13399 Compatibility Profile Context 15.201.1151

rather than
4.4.13399 Core Profile Context 15.201.1151

How can this be fixed?
>>
>>51490462
The laptop I'll be running it on has 2GHz CPU and 2GB RAM, I wouldnt have thought a VM is an option.
>>
>>51483425
samefag reporting.

I fixed openSUSE thanks to john, but I went for Debian anyway because I like learning.

It's going well, I managed to install needed non-free firmware and it's working great. Now I'm trying to automount some partitions and I already broke fstab but I fixed it using nano to delete changes. Gonna try something else, and if I run into trouble I maight ask here about it.

Thanks or your help guys

I get it
>russian roulette command that has a 1/6 chance to force-delete all root directory

This image has shown me how regular expressions for bash work more clearly than any other example I have yet bothered to look at. Usually reg expressions always look like dyslexic gobbledygook to me. Thank you.

I do need some clarification, though. What exactly does the "$" sign mean in this example? I guessed it was to evaluate the conditions as true/false but then why is it attached to the "RANDOM" then?
Does the "&&" mean "if true do this"?
And does the "||" mean "if false do that"?
>>
>>51490836
This is not exactly russian roulette.
A game russian roulette gives you 6 attempts, and in those 6 attempts you're guaranteed to fire.
This one doesn't work that way.
You still get theoretically a random 1/6 chance of firing, but it can happen after indefinite amount of attempts, not six.
>>
>>51490836
>>51490899
>What exactly does the "$" sign mean in this example?
It's a variable
$RANDOM
is a variable, you can check it by typing echo $RANDOM

The
$[$RANDOM % 6]
is a variable as well, but a slightly more complex one
>>
>>51490836
>Does the "&&" mean "if true do this"?
Double ampersand means "run the following command if the previous one was succesful" (ie returned 0)
>And does the "||" mean "if false do that"?
Double pipe means "do not run the following command if the previous one was succesful"
>>
>>51490899
true, but how would you modify it so that it becomes a 1/5 chance after the first try, then a 1/4 chance after the second and so on? Would it be way more complicated? Or just a little bit more script?

>>51490925
>>51490959
Thanks, you guys are the best. One last thing though, do regular expressions also have that quality where anything that evaluates to not-0 is counted as true, even if there is no relational operator? Like could you just say:
[ $[ $RANDOM % 6] ] && ...
etc
without the "== 0", and still have it count as true so long as the the random%6 answer does not come out to 0? Or would that just be a syntax error in shell scripting?

sry if dumb question
>>
>>51491304
>
[ $[ $RANDOM % 6] ]

This does absolutely nothing.
In fact it's the same thing as
$[$RANDOM % 6]
>>
>>51491353
Yeah sorry, it slipped my mind to erase the second set of brackets for what I was asking.. I mean to say: can reg exp be used at all like in C++, where you can put something like
if (10 * 3)
and it means the same thing as
if (true)
because 10*3 == 30, which is not 0 (the only answer which would make the if-statement return false)?
>>
>>51488268
4.2.0 and 4.3.0 were both dead as well, was too lazy to use a reverted eclass. Waited for the commit reversion on 4.1.12/et al earlier today.
