Whats the best keyboard for $60-$80?
>>
>>51464804

Rumor has it, a Chinese keyboard with hotswappable switches will show up on massdrop soon for somewhere around $30-60.

I'd wait for it if this is gonna be your first keyboard. That way you don't find out after a a few weeks of usage that you hate the switches you bought.

Where can I buy an ergodox? There was a Massdrop a couple months ago, with a super high-tech one, LCD displays and all. But I missed it because I was too poor.

Is it coming back anytime soon?

Also I'm interested in the Preonic from OLKB (pic related). Does anyone know when we'll be able to buy it? I've always found the Planck too small, this seems like a perfect compromise.
>>
>>51467004

The Ergodox Infinity (screen) SHOULD be getting another drop as soon as they finish sending out the current one (they have been syaing that for awhile though).

The old ergodox (no screen) must also be assembled. But you can order one assembled for around $225 from Falbatech. You can also order the parts for around $150 from someplace like mechanicalkeyboards.com (or falbatech actually, probably easier to order from falbatech cause you can order it all from one site and they will do a partial or even full assembly for you. Obly issue is they are slow because it is two guys running a site for fun. Estinated 2-3 weeks from order to ship) and do it yourself.
>>
What mechanical keyboards have good Linux compatibility?

Would I be fine if I got one that didn't have a million LEDs and gaymer shit?

Thanks man, this site looks great! If there's no new drop coming anytime soon, I'll get my parts from there.

Can i get something for ~€80 in europe? Possibly backlit, fullsize and with cherry mx (brown, black or red). Should i look into €100 keyboards?

>>51467069
Pretty much almost all of them. The only things that don't work out of the box are the 00 and = numpad keys AFAIK. Even then, you can bind them using software.

I just cleaned my mech for the first time ever, it was a fun experience but i fucked up the paint on some of my cheap key caps in the process.

Hoping to buy a good keyboard. Is it really worth it to buy a mechanical keyboard? Would buying one make me not use normal keyboards anymore?
>>
>>51468409
yes. yes.
>>
>>51468278

This is not the flaretech switches. This is a company producing boards that can hotswap normal cherry and gateron switches.

Reddit.

Someone imported one, tried to organize a group buy. And then massdrop expressed interest.

I just ordered a custom board, so I lost interest in the thread.

What I'm most interested is whether the hotswappable housing is capable of utilizing other cherry clones so I won't be SOL if the stock knockoff switches die
>>
>>51470573
Judging by those pictures, I'd be inclined to believe that you can swap it with any cherry mx clone. Though you'll need translucent housing to make the backlight work.

Going to order one next month. Only 40 bucks, damn son.

Just looking into getting a mechanical keyboard. Settled between Cherry MX Red or Brown switches. (Why don't you guys at least outline the differences between the switches in a switch guide...?) I'm sure it's up to personal preference at the end of the day, but have you all tried the brown for gaming? Was it too annoying?

Is this a waste of money? http://www.amazon.com/Max-Keyboard-Keycap-Cherry-Sampler/dp/B00E71W4O8/ (There's one with more switches for double the cost, but I'm confident I only want to compare red and brown.)
>>
>>51471500
Also, how is this switch getting backlit? It has a white housing, shouldnt it block the light from the led?

Hrm, that's a good point. I don't know.

>>51471516
I thought the bottom was translucent.

>>51471509
>Why don't you guys at least outline the differences between the switches in a switch guide
Because the guides tend to fall into the trap of "REDS ARE FOR GAMING, BLUES ARE FOR TYPING, BROWNS ARE BALANCED".
>>
what are some good numpads to go with my poker 3?
>>
>>51471584
http://www.geekkeys.com/leopold-fc210tp-21-key-numpad-grey/
>>
>>51471509
Yes, keycap samplers are a waste of money most of the time because the only way you can have a more precise feel of the switches is to try them out on a keyboard yourself

Also, avoid browns and blues because they are soft and mushy with unsatisfying tactility and clickiness compared to their heavier counterparts (clears and greens respectively)
>>
>>51471584
Frankly, there are a dearth of good numpads. They tend to have one or more significant faults, like:

- Nonstandard layout
- Wrong scancodes
- Expensive compared to actual keyboards

If you don't care about the scancodes being sent, >>51471598 is a good option.
>>
>>51471568
Why thank you! Yeah, I've found guides elsewhere and that's how I settled on Red or Brown. Just seems silly that the OP just says it's subjective and doesn't talk about them being tactile or not or anything like that but >>51471578 makes sense.

>>51471613
Noted. Why do you prefer the heavier switches?
>>
>>51471647
I heard the NPKC numpad and the GoldTouch numpads have the correct scancodes

I have the GoldTouch one myself and it's proven to be pretty nifty, if not pricey. Gonna change out the brown switches to blacks
>>
>>51471713
Nevermind, you said why I'm just an idiot
>>
>>51471713
Heavier tactile or clicky switches have a more precise bump/click to them compared to their softer versions
>>
>>51471713
why would you want browns or reds tho?
even blacks instead of reds, or clears instead of browns would make more sense to me.
>muh satisfaction
>>
>>51471786
Lower actuating force seems better to me. Seems as though theoretically they could allow for more faster typing than their counterparts.

>NPKC numpad
It's not a full case - the PCB is fully exposed on the bottom. Really, it's a switch tester - it comes with a variety of switches.

>GoldTouch numpad
It's got that stupid double-zero thing. If you like that, more power to you.
>>
>>51471814
it's all preference, but it could cause more mistakes too for sure. i have a board with reds, and i am pressing the wrong key more often, i think. i could just be a retard though, that's most likely it :^)))

>>51471815
np
>>
>>51471860
Hm, noted. I don't think my finger will accidentally slip and press the wrong key, I think if I'm pressing the wrong key it's because I'm unaware of where my fingers are and they're just over the wrong one. I just wish I could test out a keyboard with different switches for a few days, or at least a couple hours just to find out what I like.
>>
>>51471850
You can buy the NPKC switch tester in parts to assemble for relatively cheap from taobao you know?

The exposed PCB thing is for the default switch tester. Someone on taobao made custom clear acrylic cases for the PCB
>>
>>51471915
i would still recommend getting a switch tester not sure why the other anon said not to get one, it should give you a pretty good idea of what typing with them will feel like, and they're pretty cheap. some keyboard manufacturer's will give you the price you spent on the switch tester off of the keyboard if you buy from them, not sure about WASD tho.

http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/index.php/wasd-6-key-cherry-mx-switch-tester.html
>>
>>51471936
It didn't seem like it was really any cheaper over getting one of their programmable knockoffs, like the mpad.
>>
My first keyboard had browns.

My second keyboard has clears, which I consider the best switch.

I think if I were to go back in time and wouldn't have the choice of clears, I would tell myself to get reds or blacks. Browns literally feel like reds with some dirt stuck in the middle.
>>
>>51472678
You sound like someone who would enjoy 55g Topre. Some consider it to be the ultimate in tactile switches with a nice bit of resistance similar to clears.

First time posting in /mkg/

What do you guys think of DasKeyboard?

I'm looking to get a professional (not gaming) keyboard for my battlestation. What options are good? I was looking at the Model S Ultimate, but open to any suggestions.
>>
>>51473041
>What do you guys think of DasKeyboard?
Expensive for what it is.

Get a quickfire rapid and replace the caps.
>>
>>51473041
I would have a look at the Code Keyboard on Massdrop. It's backlit, but you can turn them off and it looks nice and clean that way. It also has good switch options.
>>
>>51473127
Looks decent. I guess one thing I liked about the DK were the usb ports and the media controls. Perhaps that's asking too much.

Is the major criticism of DS the price point? Is there any sort of notorious issue with quality or other little things. I remember back in the day I would make keys shiny pretty quickly (maybe oily fingers), which irked me. Are there some new boards that don't have this fault?
>>
>>51473376
>usb ports
Buy a hub if you're running out of ports.

>the media controls
Bind your unused keys with AHK. The Das uses shit switches for the dedicated media keys, anyway. Plus, the Model S isn't the one with media buttons.

>Is the major criticism of DS the price point?
Yeah, it doesn't really offer anything that you couldn't get with a cheaper, better board.

>Is there any sort of notorious issue with quality or other little things.
They moved to a worse OEM and use cheaper switches in some of their boards, but retained their high price point.

>Are there some new boards that don't have this fault?
It's pretty inherent with ABS caps, which most boards come stock with. If you like blank caps, you can easily pick up an aftermarket PBT set.
>>
>>51473479
or he could just get the DS lol

"don't buy this keyboard with the stuff on it you want, buy a different keyboard and buy more things that the keyboard you want already has"
>>
>>51473479
Fair point. So you'd consider the Quickfire Rapid the best contender for a professional mechanical keyboard?

>>51473349
I'll check this out, too.

>>51473526
He gave fair criticism. I'm just very new to the options, so I'm clearly kinda lost.
>>
>>51473570
>So you'd consider the Quickfire Rapid the best contender for a professional mechanical keyboard?
It all depends on what you mean by "professional". I suggest the QFR because it is the go-to entry-level keyboard, as it is cheap and well-made. Really, the only dumb thing about it would be the terrible font, but that's what aftermarket caps are for.

The Code is also a good option.

I chose a wasd blank wth a keycap set of my choice. Didn't get the massdrop version but I got an ultra classic direct from them almost a month ago. It's excellent. Very loud, and this is from someone who doesn't think greens are "that" loud. I have to turn up the volume on my speakers when typing. It's a large heavy keyboard. It's excellent. I love it. Though I've been switching back to my clears and greens cause I'm getting up the morning really early and don't want to wake the roommate.

TLDR get a unicomp. Nice tactile typing response. It feels great. Types great. I love it.

Tenkey, but tkl is also an option. I'm looking for something to fit my home office, that will sometimes be seen and used by outsiders.

Just saying "tenkey" means you want a standalone numpad, but I can infer that you mean fullsize.

Get a KUL, if you can find stock.

are there any alternatives to cherry mx clear switches without the fucking spring ping?
>>
help me out senpai, which switch is the least straining for an all day typing?

I have carpal tunnel so the less is strains the forearms, the better.

Not sure if browns or reds (lower actuation force) are better here.

I can only get here quickfire rapid brown/red or storm brown.

I have a thinkpad t420 if somebody could make a force comparison.
>>
>>51482502
None of the switches are really comparable to the old thinkpad keyboards since their travel is so much further. Even the fairly light switches like blues require a fair bit more force to actuate than the thinkpad

Go with a low-profile chiclet keyboard or MS natural 400 and reposition your elbows to be more ergonomic.
Or you can disregard my advice and go for a ricer cramped 60% with black switches and a $60 hardwood wrist rest because you ain't no pussy nigga.

The total travel distance may be bigger, but the actuation distance is not.

He just has to learn how to type properly, withou bottoming out.

>>51482502
Get browns and, as I said, learn how to type without bottoming out. Reds are lighter, but as they have no tactile bump, its very hard to feel if you have already passed the actuation point or not.

If you want a really light switch with a tactile bump, get Noppoo EC108-Pro 35G. I have a 45g one and holy shit, this thing is light. I cant even think how the 35g would be.
There are also topre 30/35g, but I think they are harder to find.

serious question,
why do so many of you people who really care about cool things like this still use fucking retard baka qwerty?
>>
>>51485425
Because I'm used to qwerty and I need to type a bunch of shit everyday so its hard to just change
>>
>>51485425

I am forced to use keyboards that aren't my own almost daily.

I don't want to muddle it up with an alternate layout for a insignificant increase in speed.
>>
>>51485492
You might actully go pretty fast like +20wpm
>>
>>51485492
>>51485526
It's not about speed.
It's not even about hand health/RSI/comfort.
It's about fucking logic and reason.
I use Dvorak because I appreciate the thought that went into it.

Don't even get me started on staggered rows...
>>
>>51485567

There is logic behind qwerty, it is just outdated.

No reason to fix what isn't broken. Full worlwide conversion would cause more problems then it would fix.
>>
>>51485596
Is this like the US and the imperial system?
>>
>>51485425
>why do so many of you people who really care about cool things like this still use fucking retard baka qwerty?

Because only an autistic dipshit would go to the effort of forcing himself to learn a new keyboard layout, completely unlike every keyboard he'll ever see on another person's computer, a phone, a kiosk, etc.

I've been typing Dvorak since about 2002. I made the change in an effort to deal with the intense tendinitis that was killing me.

Switching to a decent mechanical keyboard, particularly the Kinesis Classic, did a million times more for me than Dvorak ever did.

I still type Dvorak. I can get pretty fast, into the 110 - 115 WPM range, but I'll never be as fast as I was on QWERTY. Also, I can switch between touch typing both layouts within a couple of seconds, but I can't tell you where any of the letters are, it's just muscle memory.
>>
>>51485567
>I use Dvorak because I appreciate the thought that went into it.

This is your brain on autism.

>>
>>51464748
So my Corsair K70 (yes i did buy it) died on me and yes it's just after 2 years, therefore i need a new keyboard.

I already looked into it and i want one of the following:
CM Storm Quickfire TKL 100€
Ducky Shine 3 Slim 140€
Das Keyboard 4C 150€

But honestly i don't really think that the extra 40-50€ are worth it. The Ducky is tempting, but as i said, i don't see the point.

Has anyone experience with these keyboards and can tell me if the +40€ for the Ducky are worth the money?

the switches and/or debouncing are so shit that I can barely make myself alt-f4 for fear of nuking extra windows.

Ah. I use cmd + w and cmd + q (osx and linux)

I know there are various alternatives and workarounds, but my point stands that the f-keys on the Advantage are close to worthless.

a bigger issue than the alt-f4 is accidentally double-stepping in a debugger actually, and it just gets annoying having to remap things around.

Hey /mkg/!
I recently got a broken Poker II from a friend.
The USB connector is shot, and I've already ordered a replacement and everything.
The point is, he doesn't have the original keycaps anymore so I'm completely without keycaps.
