please try showing/hiding toolbars, sidebars and individual gui elements in thunar, nautilus, nemo, dolphin and all the other standard file browsers, you'll find that i'm absolutely right. it's possible in maybe 30% of the cases. it's really frustrating because i really, really want to like and use linux for its merits but some of the software i need isn't supported and there's these silly shortcomings like this basic lack of customizability that drives me back to hackintosh.

first, applescript works across almost all OSX apps, which makes it more versatile and easier to learn than on linux where you have several different ways of doing similar stuff.

what i mean is stuff like, for example, have the mail and chat apps save all the picture attachments of incoming mails and messages into a folder in your home directory; and have that folder periodically resize and reformat all those pictures to a standard height and picture format (say, jpeg). then, once a month, it will compile all those pictures into a PDF file and back it up to an external harddisk or an ftp server.

the beauty of applescript is the graphical frontend ("Automator") that enables even people with no coding or scripting knowledge to set up somewhat complex stuff like this.

obviously the task above is a little nonsensical, but just to give you a tangible example. i personally use it to back up my personal and work files that i haven't used in two weeks to an external drive according to a certain organisational pattern, it's nice not to have to think about that.

I haven't had any need to do anything too radical to the file browser. I just adjusted the icon size on both the sidebar and the actual browser. You can hide the sidebar with F9 in Thunar. I like to keep it, it's fast and easy. The system theme alters the look of the buttons and WM theme alters the window borders which has closing and minimize and maximize buttons.

....I think that was my favorite part of OS X. I haven't used mac since 10.5 but it was kinda nice it was always in the same place. No matter what size my window was, it'd always show all of the tool bar options.

DIdn't Apple block custom icons on "system files" in El Capitan? I had changed the icons of several stock apps, drives, and folders before El Capitan, and after the upgrade they don't show up in LiteIcon anymore.

No it's not. I'm not a ricer. In some cases the defaults might be good enough for me. I just think that nothing is impossible if you truly want it. After all, nothing is locked down. Just check the desktop thread sometimes and you see how drastically things can be changed in your system.

The sidebar can be hidden with F9 like I said. The navigation bar is pretty small and I wouldn't want to get rid of it personally but maybe there's a way to remove it too. The button size and look is from the system theme. The menubar can be hidden with Ctrl + M. This is how it looks like in my case.

I keep file browser icons big since it's faster and easier to hit them with a cursor when they are big and this is a laptop which has a trackpad.
