Hello /g/, I am going to do a little project. I am going to make a server using only software from 1996. In phase one, I will build a prototype in a VM. In phase 2, I will install it onto an old computer I have in my basement. It will have a web server and an ftp server. Right now I am looking for an OS to use, if you want to make a suggestion, it has to be:
1. What OS
2. Where to download
3. From 1996 to earlier
4. How to config (guide has to be from 1996)
5. At least somewhat popular during 1996
6. Has to be somewhat easy to use. Should have a gui

Enjoy having scriptkiddies hack your shit all the time.
>>
>>51455910
>thinking i will put anything important on it
anon this is just for shits and giggles
>>
>>51455942
but you could do something much cooler using modern software.

Its not even like using old shit software teaches you anything new.
>>
>>51455965
I already have a modern server
>>
>>51455965
you aren't getting the meaning of the term "hobby project" are you anon
>>
>>51456008
So why not do something actually cool? It's like if an anthropologist decided to spend a year wiping shit with leaves to see how the cavemen did it, you wont learn anything.
See you could setup an old piece of shit server that nobody ever will use (which simply involves finding an old linux distro) or ya know... program a really badass thing that works on old hardware like a PC demo, or whatever.

Old OSes do not support modern hardware. Perhaps VM's virtual hardware as well.

your choices are linux or windows nt 4.0. I used to run slackware on a 386 for ip masquerading (NAT) as it was the only way for me to have multiple computers connect to the internet. If you opt for linux just use the HOWTO'S as they were the docs mostly used back then.
>>
>>51456222
NT 4.0 it is. Any software I should install? I already know 4.0 works on my VM.
>>
>>51456360
http://www.warftp.org/ if you want a third party ftp server. it was released in 1996 so it matches the era.
>>
>>51456398
Sounds cool, but i want the actual 1996 release. The historical versions on their site seem to only go back to 1999.

>>
>>51456513
I know about that, but like i said the last modified says 1999. I need 1996
>>
>>51456545
the dates on the ftp are wrong, check http://www.warftp.org/files/1.6_Series/obsolete/war-ftpd015a.zip it's the first release from 96

>>51456765
i already downloaded it from winworld, but thanks anyways
>>
>>51456754
no problem, for web server you can use IIS: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Information_Services it should come with NT 4.0
>>
Installing SP6. It's not from 1996, but it's a prerequisite for vmware tools. Final version will not have it.
>>
luddites gonna luddite. If you want to live in the past, why not actually do something with it? there's some hardware related tasks where there's still a small market in huge cities... you wouldn't be say a billionaire but you could still live the dream that way.
>>
so I'm thinking on doing the same thing with an old computer i have just layed down. But i want to use with a modern operating system. what's the best one to start a small server at home? (just for an hobby)
>>
>>51458105
Linux obviously.
>>
>>51458219
yes linux is obviously. but what distro do you recommend?
>>
>>51458328

Try debian or centos
If the computer is too old to run these, then don't even bother.
>>
>>51458105
pls no hijack thread
>>
sorry mate. you are right. thanks for the help and good luck on your project
>>
>>51455801
Single/Dual Pentium Pro system (or maybe a high-end P133/166) running Windows NT 4.0 + IIS is what you want for the easy route. Though IIS may have come out later, I'm not sure what popular Windows web hosting software there was before that.

However, the dominant platform in high-end web servers were SPARC systems running Solaris, for which you would want an Ultra 1/2 or SPARCStation 20.

>>51456130
Why are you so upset? People run Websites from old, unsupported shit all the time, nobody cares.

83KB, 1280x720px
what is the most expensive piece of tech you have in your house
>>
>>51458975
my rackmount RS/6000 somewhat similar to the one in OP's pic probably retailed for around $120,000 new
>>
>>51459030
overpriced like all ibm hardware
>>
>>51459030

Are you running AIX on it?
>>
>>51459048
like everything else in the UNIX segment

the kind of business that would need a bleeding edge 8-way RISC system would have no trouble affording that paltry amount anyway, it's the software and support that really gets you in the end

>>51460695
of course, it's out of commission right now though and needs a power supply replacement.
