See you could setup an old piece of shit server that nobody ever will use (which simply involves finding an old linux distro) or ya know... program a really badass thing that works on old hardware like a PC demo, or whatever.

Old OSes do not support modern hardware. Perhaps VM's virtual hardware as well.

your choices are linux or windows nt 4.0. I used to run slackware on a 386 for ip masquerading (NAT) as it was the only way for me to have multiple computers connect to the internet. If you opt for linux just use the HOWTO'S as they were the docs mostly used back then.

Installing SP6. It's not from 1996, but it's a prerequisite for vmware tools. Final version will not have it.

luddites gonna luddite. If you want to live in the past, why not actually do something with it? there's some hardware related tasks where there's still a small market in huge cities... you wouldn't be say a billionaire but you could still live the dream that way.

Single/Dual Pentium Pro system (or maybe a high-end P133/166) running Windows NT 4.0 + IIS is what you want for the easy route. Though IIS may have come out later, I'm not sure what popular Windows web hosting software there was before that.

However, the dominant platform in high-end web servers were SPARC systems running Solaris, for which you would want an Ultra 1/2 or SPARCStation 20.
