Any cheap HDD heaters or other solutions?
Winter is comming and I'm having a hard time keeping my HDD temp above 10c. And I have to put it on delayed start (booting from SSD) so that the system warms up to above freezing before it starts spinning.
>>
>>51447211
Don't shut down your system
Run shit to keep your CPU and GPU with enough load to warm your case
Otherwise you might want to warm the whole room to a decent temp
>>
>>51447211
This is why we buy amd
>>
>>51447211
I hope that piggy is ok
>>
>>51447211
Did he died?
>>
>>51447232
Keeping it running doesn't work since it runs of a generator that I can't leave on (and it would be expensive as fuck).
>>
>>51447304
Shit, you're pretty fucked senpai
You could hack in some electric blankets or something to warm the hdd's, afaik there's no hdd warmers
>>
What a hilarious problem to have, OP.

I dunno, try getting those little chemical heat packs and putting em around your drive before you boot?
>>
Wait OP
Maximum operating temps for HDD's are below freezing last time I checked
You could try your luck and run your HDD's at those temps
>>
Are these problems people actually have? Living in california sure is nice.
>>
>>51447332
>electric blankets
hmm, yeah, maybe I could hook them up to a car battery and run on a timer.
>afaik there's no hdd warmers
FUG :D
>>51447336
>chemical heat packs
That's pretty smart, but I don't think it would be much faster than just letting the system warm that shit.
>>
>>51447354
nah m8. There's always some humidity in the air, which can/will freeze on the platter surface and absolutely #KVADDAD the reader head if it hits even a tiny crystal that hasn't evaporated yet
>>
>>51447304
What kind of shithole do you live in that you don't have mains power to your house?
>>
>>51447409
In case you haven't figured it out I actually have a job and this computer isn't in my house
>>
>>51447426
> What kind of shithole do you live in that you don't have mains power to your house?

What kind of crack house do you work in that you don't have mains power, but have a desktop/server?
>>
>>51447815
I do geological surveys and we have some remote outposts that I visit from time to time.
>>
>buy a prebuilt nas/build a nas thats on 24/7
I know the WD NAS options allow for JBOD if you have a lot of different capacities

Otherwise, why not buy a little space heater and just keep it on low pointing in the general direction of the computer? Just turn it off once the computer turns on
>>
>>51447915
thats actually really cool senpai
wish i could help, but im down to read about your work
>>
I think your best bet would be one of those USB coffee warmers
Also>>51447974
This, desu
>>
>>51447211
Try asking >>>/diy/
>>
I recommend a 200k btu salamander pointed right at it or a can of sterno in the bottom of the case. In reality, a nice 40w incadescent light bulb would warm the internals nicely.
>>
Or put a 100w lightbulb by the intake and let it pull the heat in. Or build a mini heating rig out of a light bulb and a cpu fan and 12v power supply to have forced air beforw u turn on. Pizza box Cardboard and ducttape will jerry-rig it quite nicely...
>>
GTX 480
>>
Cover the vents. It'll heat up the case in no time.

Sorry didn't really read the whole thread first.

This is all you need, OP.
>>
>>51448102
Yeah, I already thow a heavy blanket over it when I start
>>
What ambient temperatures are you dealing with, OP?
>>
Buy a Lasko My Heat ceramic heater. They're inexpensive and are less than 6 inch tall. You could aim it towards the intake and heat it that way.
>>
Why not just make the switch to entirely SSD? It would save a lot of headache. If one of the drives "accidentally" fucked up from spinning at below safe temps it could create a point of conversation about it. I'm sure that your higher ups would be willing to spare a few shekels to facilitate switching to solid state media, since their sensitive data is on the line, no?

Had the same problem in Iceland.

Just bought some peltiers off ebay, hooked them up to a 12v power supply. Strapped them to my HDD's, applied a little thermal paste. I used a cheap aquarium thermometer with a probe to give me a useably accurate temp reading.

Would wake up, hit the switch, go make coffee, and everything would be a balmy 30°C by the time I got back, ready to power up.
>>
>>51447211
>>51449409
Do you guys even need coolers on your CPU's?
>>
>>51449424
I'm second guy.

Yep, cpus need coolers because they ramp up from -10 to 100°C in about 5 seconds.

Granted, at the ambient temps the equipment is used in (-20 to -10), fans can be on minimum speed, if you popped off a cpu cooler, your system would hang almost immediately, and probably die if the thermal cutoff doesnt work as planned.

As the equipment I'm using would cost me about 10 years of my current salary, that is not something I want to test.
>>
>>51449409
>Peltiers
Holy shit that might work really good. Thx m8
>>51449424
As long as energy in is greater than energy dispersed by cooling your temps keep rising. It actually doesn't matter that much if it's -20 or +30 in the room. That mostly shifts your idle up and down by an equal amount.
>>
>>51449904
YW
And yep, it works :)
>>
>>51449479
Wtf are you doing running expensive equipment in Iceland?

It would be kinda dumb to let off a couple of thise babies in their own back yard.

>Using ebay for parts

Yeah. Right.
>>
>>51450344
>>51450410
>>51450278

Iceland doesn't have nukes.
What we do is test for detonations from potentially anywhere on earth (and in most cases, air detonations too), medium range fly-bys, and we are researching long range launch detection.

Iceland is one of 5 sites we monitor from, and correlation gives us a pretty good idea of where it happened (+-50km)

The monitoring equipment itself is almost COTS, but the servers are fairly beefy custom rigs.

>>51450435

I make a comfortable living, and pretty decent if you compare it to the actual work I do.
In total, I am seriously working about 12-20 hours a week.

>>51450489

The reason I used the peltier trick is to save a couple months of beaurocracy. I rigged up a large peltier for each hdd node, 12 peltiers total, running on 6 x 300W PSU's. Total cost: $400
It is cheap, efficient, and it just works.
You'd be surprised at how many critical servers are off-spec jury-rigged by their admins to make their lives easier.

Like most areas, if you know what you're working with, you can make it work better for you.
>>
>>51447211
Are you homeless or just too cheap to pay for heating?
>>
>>51449479
>if you popped off a cpu cooler, your system would hang almost immediately, and probably die if the thermal cutoff doesnt work as planned.
Have CPUs really gone backwards in this aspect? I remember a test some years ago where a pentium 4 ran with just the integrated heat spreader. It was throttled by temps ofc, but still stable.
>>
>>51450875
PIV's maybe.

With Xeons, they just shut down.
>>
>>51450875
I have a friend who ran a q6600 for about a month with the cooler not locked down properly, he eventually discovered it while trying to figure out while it was running like shit.
>>
You could hook up a power resistor to your 5v standby rail and mount it to your hard drive some how. Be sure to heat shrink any exposed wires as the 0v of the PSU is earthed to the case.

>>51450875

even if you lived at an antarctic base, 1.4 billion transistors put out too much heat not to fry themselves without cooling. although i'm sure if you DID live there you could get away with a decent sized heatsink. I've seen passive coolers as recently as Core 2 Quads working fine.
