Just watched the new Steve Jobs movie.

It's stupid to want one of these now, right?
>>
I loved those things in kindergarten. First time I ever used a Mac.
>>
>>51444892

Kindergarten? Jesus I feel old now. When I was in kindergarten the computers we used still used the 5.25" floppy drives.
>>
>>51444892
>Can't tell if this is a mac is for kids insult...
>>
If you're gonna vintage, I'd just go all out and get a green apple ii for some choplifter action or the classic mac for... whatever that paint program was called
>>
>>51444880
Get a newer model and you can still use it for basic things like browsing. If you just want the form factor I'd recommend an eMac, 1280x960 instead of 1024x768 with a G4e instead of G3
>>
>>51445034
I have a 3 month old MacBook Pro. I don't need one for anything. But it'd be a great piece of history to own.

They came in different models?
>>
>>51445057
Yeah, there are different models. There are slot loading and tray loading models, and among those are different specced models.
>>
>>51444880
They are great for smashing

>>
Fuck that. iMac G3s are garbage. I throw one out like every goddamn week at work.
>>
>>51445057
Yep, the G3 iMacs lasted ages, so there's a pretty big difference in performance from the original 233MHz CPU with 32MB RAM and Rage IIc up to the final model which was available with up to 700MHz CPU, 256MB RAM stock expandable to 1GB, Rage 128 Ultra.
>>
>>51444880
yeah it is stupid to want one of those. I have fond memories of mac os 9 on them though, and an old version of photoshop I didn't know how to use.
>>
you can use it as a boat anchor
>>
Can't be arsed getting them down, but I've still got

G3 (750cx) iMac (2001) Indigo, 500mhz G3e, 512MB SD-133, overheatingly fast WD 120GB 7200rpm, ATi Rage Ultra 128
G4 (7441) eMac, originally 800mhz, now 1.27ghz, 1GB DDR, 120GB WD 7200rpm, GeForce2 MX!
>>
I got my mom a G5 last year to use as a daily driver, it was alright. It was really slow on the latest supported version of OSX, which I thought was interesting. Once I found a PowerPC compatible browser, I also found that it could hardly surf the modern internet

tl;dr They're fun to look at but are now devoid of purpose other than novelty

Nice, I basically used to have the same G3 in graphite with 10.3 running on it. Bought it used and had it throughout middle and the first bit of high school, at which point I bought a Thinkpad T40. Still used the Mac for the occasional project though, since our school was primarily Mac-based. I kept the iMac in a closet at my parents' house while I was away for university, or so I thought. I was going to bust it open for a little bit of nostalgia, but to my surprise I found it was gone. Turns out my mother handed it off to the local Goodwill years ago.

Disgusting.

If you're going to do it in style, Get the Bondi blue 233/266MHz tray loaders. Though it has more shielding, so you can't see the innards like the later models.

Sure, you could go with the later, more powerful models, but I imagine you're not buying this to use as a daily driver. Rather just to boot up once in a while and play with games from the era. Or to screenshot and post to this place from IE5.
>>
>>51445411
Good, maybe they will finally be worth something
>>
>>51445388
Its a movie. It doesn't really go into to much history about apple. It's more about the man, Steve jobs. Personally, having read a lot about jobs' life, I think both this and the Ashton kutcher movie aren't that good at all.

I feel as if it would be best to ask in this thread. I bought a iBook g3 a while ago (not >>51447741, but the all white one that came after it). I managed to lock myself out of it, and I can't get it to boot off of any os 9.2.2 discs that I burn. My question is if I can install debian on it, can I somehow install a new copy of 9.2.2 on it through that?
>>
>>51447882
Does it just default to the HD? Try holding down C when you start up, I think it should force the machine to boot from the disc. Or holding the option key I believe brings up a list of bootable devices.

It just boots straight to the Hd. I did both of those, and it does not recognize the disc. I also tried from open firmware, and while it did recognize the fact that there was a disc in the drive, it would not boot from it. I tried with 2 different discs.

I should also probably mention that I burned one of those discs using imgbrun, and another one using transmac since I do not have another mac. Could that be what is causing the problem?

One cool thing about the B&W G3s is that they had an ADB port, but the actual reason I suggested it is because if he wanted some piece of "innovation" from Jobs' second coming, the B&W G3 was obviously the first of his revamp in the professional lineup.

They're not too bad in actual use either, though I prefer my 500 MHz Sawtooth G4.
>>
You pretty much can't do anything with a PowerPC these days. What the hell happened to /g/? Why has nobody shut this thread down for Mac faggotree
>>
>>51445388
Why does everyone think Woz was a computer genius because he built some generic 6502 shitbox that was maybe a little more expandable than its competitors?

Seymour Cray was a fucking genius, Woz was good at what he did and a great guy but he wasn't really some master innovator that Jobs stole all of his ideas from, he was a hobbyist who built systems for other hobbyists.

The rest of that shit is pretty standard for the '80s tech industry, pretty much everything you're running right now is a clone or at heavily influenced by someone else's innovative product.
>>
>>51448090
You can't play games or mindlessly consume shitty TV shows/e-celeb blog shit on youtube but you can surf the web, use office productivity software, make music, edit photos and pretty much anything else they did when they were new. I was daily driving a G4 for a while, pretty much all that I found limiting for my use case was Classilla's shit JS support which hopefully will be fixed later down the road.

Tray loading, then after, slot loading.
Some colors where only available on one type of config, some where only sold for a few months.
I have 13 of the things, from the very first model to the fastest config sold. There really isn't much difference. OSX runs close to the same on all of them.
They made an education kinda model, the specs from the newer lcd g4 but still using CRT's.
Makes a difference but you're not going to be watching YouTube on it without live transcoding on another server.
If you're just using then for vintage computing reasons anything will do.
Pick what you think looks prettiest.

It's not so much that he was a genius, but he's literally the only reason anyone today even knows "Apple" as a company. Without him, Jobs was literally nothing.

Also he probably knows more about tech than anyone on /g/ ever will, so you could say he's a genius in that regard.
