I know it sounds weird but I got it to work by disabling usb3 in bios, booting into whinedoze, letting it install as usb2 then reenabling usb3 in bios and it installed perfectly... hope it helps.

Any BIOS that'll boot Vista or 7 will work fine. UEFI boot mode is not needed, but preferable if available since it will boot faster. Secure Boot is entirely optional and won't really add jack unless you use Bitlocker.

The weird USB3 disable/enable thing here is a workaround for shitty hardware with shitty drivers. Most computers don't need that done.

On everything I've tried both on, 8.1 wins though only by a bit. Both have shitty laggy search in their builtin start menus, but on both that can be fixed by installing Classic Start Menu which makes it as usable as the old 7 start menu again.

What, like display settings, then advanced display settings if you want "advanced" settings like resolution, then even more advanced display settings (i.e. drop to the Windows 7 control panel) to change actually advanced things? In 8.1 it's just right click desktop, screen resolution.

Questionable, but if you don't like the look you have extremely little control over it. In 7 you could change color and transparency or use the old Classic theme. In 8.1 you could at least customize the titlebar color. In 10 you can control... a one pixel wide border around it?

I'll give you that. It is quite nice, and having it integrated rather than using a 3rd party app makes it smoother.

My laptop came with 8.1 (I have 10 now), and any hard drive or flash drive would randomly get disconnected every few minutes, causing any programs I had running off of it to crash. I never found a fix for it, but I believe I read somewhere that basically all Win8/8.1 comps had USB 3.0 troubles. I'm thinking the problem has been solved since upgrading to 10, though I don't think I've actually tested it.

No trouble with it here. It's a Thinkpad T440p with the Windows 8.1 it shipped with. I've used USB 3.0 sticks and a USB 3.0 SATA adapter cable, both connected for hours. No issues apart from a couple times I bumped the plug loose.
